Jeanne Socrates left on her non-stop, solo circumnavigation yesterday on the afternoon tide. Nereida, her 38 foot Najad 380, was doing about 7.5 knots across the line. Good Luck to Jeanne.

USCG Station Boston and USS Constitution

We got a chance to visit the Coast Guard Station in Boston's North End on July 4th. The USCGC Spencer was open for tours. While on board the Spencer's flight deck we the the return of the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) from her July 4 cruise around Boston Harbor.

Cold Molding at WoodenBoat School

Last week I attended an Introduction to Cold Molding class at the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine. The six day class was taught by Mike Moros and focused on the cold molding of a hull for William Garden's Tomcat design. The class also included a field trip to Brion Rieff Boat Builders, a yard that specializes in cold molded builds.

Lugger Main Mast

These pictures show dry fitting the main mast. Rick made a nice mast step from steel. The design will allow a person to step the mast singlehanded. It also doubles as a holder for the mast when it is down and horizontal. At that point, the mast will support a canvas boat cover.

Lugger Trim

It has been slower going on the Lugger these last weeks. We have mostly been waiting for paint work to dry before turning the shop back into woodworking mode. We also got hit by six inches of snow near the shop which has made the commute tougher for me.

Bill took a couple shots of the new cove stripe done in Z Spar Grand Banks Beige. He also installed the oarlocks from Port Townsend Foundry.

Automated Life Jacket Detection for Drones

An Australian company, Sentient, that makes software for UAVs has added detection of small objects such as life jackets to it's Kestrel software. The software is currently used in military applications, maritime search and rescue and for thwarting piracy.

Lugger Flip Day

It was flip day for the boat today. A crew of five managed to manhandle her back onto the trailer.

The last two weeks have seen nine coats of paint go onto the topsides and five on the bottom. There were two coats of Mar-x-ite, four coats of Interlux Pre-Kote and three coats of Marshall's Cove Forrest Green enamel.

There is still a bit of touch up to do on the hull as well as adding a cove stripe and matching transom.
