Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett won the Oscar for Best Original Song for 'The Weary Kind' from 'Crazy Heart' at the 82nd Academy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night. It was the first Oscar win for both musicians.

Bingham, pictured, and Burnett were nominated alongside two Randy Newman songs -- 'Almost There' and 'Down in New Orleans,' from 'The Princess and the Frog,' as well as 'Loin de Paname' from 'Paris 36,' with lyrics by Frank Thomas and music by Reinhardt Wagner, and Maury Yeston's 'Take It All' from 'Nine.'

Both Bingham and Burnett accepted the award, with Bingham thanking the cast and crew of 'Crazy Heart' and his family.

The pair also won the award for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes. They will be working together again on Bingham's follow-up to his debut album with his band, Ryan Bingham and the Dead Horses, as Bingham recently told Spinner in an interview.

The winner of Best Documentary Short Category, is “Music by Prudence,” directed by Roger Ross Williams, and starring Prudence Mabhena.

The 33 minute documentary, focuses around a gifted young woman Prudence, who suffers from arthrogryphosis, a rare disorder which severely deforms the joints of the body.

Prudence who has had to face many odds in her young life, although this has not stopped her from living. Prudence sings in an amazing five languages, and shares her talents with the world.

Typically people with disabilities in Africa, are seen as the result of witchcraft, and they are even sometimes killed, to remove the curse from the family.

But Prudence, born in Victoria Falls did not face the same fate. When she was born, it was soon obvious that there was something not right. Her arms and legs were soon to found useless, as well as being twisted and limp.

Her paternal grandmother, told her daughter in law to refrain from breastfeeding Prudence, which would inevitably mean death for the baby. But Prudence’s mothed did not listen, and was soon ostracized. She ended up taking Prudence to her own mother’s rural home, and when Prudence turned 4, she was left in her Grandmothers care.

But Prudence’s life did not get easy from here, she had to endure things that would be too much for most people. To be viewed by the community and being treated like a disease. Prudence also had to face, not being able to be schooled by her grandmother, after she had only just started at King George VI School and Centre with Physical Disabilities, which is privately funded.

Prudence’s father could not pay for her tuition, so she was then forced to move with him. This also at a time when because her legs were now deemed useless and twisted, they were amputated.

But her father’s new wife, would not care for Prudence, she even refused to touch her. She lived in hell as no-one would take her to the bathroom, so endured sitting in her own urine and feces. And she had to crawl on the floor and eat on the floor as she had no wheelchair. But everyday She would drag herself to a mango tree, to sing, and tell herself that it would all soon be over.

Prudence was then awarded a scholarship to the school.

When arriving at the school, aged 9, she is unable to trust, and felt dehumanized, she is gifted a wheelchair, which gives her the opportunity to clean up, go to school and finally feel human again.

When a school administrator one day hears Prudence’s voice, they offer her to try out for the choir, where within a week, she is running it.

From this point Prudence’s story continues to shine, and it is a documentary that everyone should see, purely to learn the lesson of strength, human spirit and love.

Prudence now has her own Afro-Fusion band, where all 8 members have a disability.

Showing a lesson to the people who had given up on them, these children have worth, and have talent.

Same-sex marriage and adoption law implemented in Mexico city !

Finally on Thursday Mexico City implemented the same-sex marriage and adoption of child by the same-sex partners. Mayor Marcelo Ebrard the Mexico City mayor has said that the officials will do everything to implement the law. Since gay rights activists are quite apprehensive about the implementation of the law as the conservative politicians have said that they would do everything in their power to chip away the same-sex marriage rights.

Last month the Mexican Institute for sexology held a workshop for 60 Civil Registry judges who will be performing the weddings. The institute’s founder and director Juan Luis Alvarez-Gayou said that this week another workshop for 120 civil judges will be held who might have to give rulings on domestic issues after the marriage.

The law is implemented just a day after a same-sex marriage was performed in Argentina. Previously the couple was denied the marriage by the nation’s capital, Buenos Aires officials but a civil ceremony was performed on Wednesday after a judge issued a ruling which allowed the two men, Damien Bernath and Jorge Salazar to get married. This is the first gay marriage in Buenos Aries and second in Argentina, first one took place in Tierra del Fuego after the capital city denied a permit and calling it illegal.

This law of Mexico City can be viewed as a beginning of a new era, when the Latin American nations are opening up and accepting the same-sex marriage. In many Latin American countries the same-sex marriage issue is decided on local and state level, but one can only hope it gets a wider and national acceptance soon.

Previously it was reported that Depp and his longtime flame Paradis were contemplating of tying the knot in April in a chapel on their 1.25-million-dollar French property after he was spotted in his quest for the perfect engagement ring in California with director Tim Burton as his best man in the ceremony.

MSNBC personality and former ESPN sportcenter anchor Keith Olbermann has squared off with ESPN blogger Bill Simmons over a column Simmons wrote Wednesday comparing Tiger Woods' return to the golf course to Muhammed Ali's comeback from being jailed over draft dodging charges during the Vietnam War.

Olbermann panned the comparison and trashed Simmons, quipping "I am again left to marvel how somebody can rise to a fairly prominent media position with no discernible insight or talent, save for an apparent ability to mix up a vast bowl of word salad very quickly."

Simmons quickly fired back via Twitter - the official celebrity response mechanism these days - by stating the following: "KO, please know the feeling is mutual. You’re my worst case scenario for my career in 12 yrs: a pious, unlikable blowhard who lives alone."

While Olbermann may have a point regarding the comparison - which admittedly is something of a stretch - his attack on Simmons is unfounded. Olbermann, you'll remember, rose to fame as a Sportscenter anchor more than a decade ago. Given that his notoriety grew due to his position as a talking head - or someone who could be accused of having no discernible insight - it rings hollow when Olbermann hammers Simmons so hard.

In fact, Simmons has offered more of an opinion than Olbermann ever did for the total sports network, and has inspired a nation of sports bloggers to chase their dream.

Simmons may have been wrong for making the comparison in his column. But Olbermann is simply using his status as a political commentator to put himself on a pedestal above the "lowly" sportswriter.

Perhaps Olbermann should consider the road he took to get to MSNBC before he starts trashing people who work for the network that got him his real start.

The Roots New Album “How I Got Over” Release On June 8 on Def Jam

The legendary band The Roots will be releasing the long-delayed album “How I Got Over” on June 8 on Def Jam, according to a Twitter post from drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

The track list for the album has yet to be announced, but it is likely to include the high-energy, soul-tinged title track, which the Roots debuted last June on “Late Night” and often perform as the warm-up song before show tapings.

In other news, the Roots yesterday began recording a new album with Booker T. Jones of Booker T and the MGs. The project will be the follow-up to Jones’ Grammy-winning 2009 Anti- album “Potato Hole” and is expected to feature a handful of special guest vocalists.

As previously reported, tickets are on sale today for the third Roots Picnic, to be held June 5 at Philadelphia’s Festival Pier. The Roots will perform alongside Vampire Weekend, Clipse and a special, as-yet-unannounced reunion from a legendary hip-hop group.

The Crowded Sky Synopsis:
At a San Diego military air station, McVey, a young sailor, is scheduled to fly to Washington, D.C., on a jet piloted by Capt. Dale Heath, who was involved in a mid-air collision three years earlier.

Meanwhile, at the Heath residence, Dale’s philandering wife Cheryl smugly tells Dale that she seduced him to destroy his grounds for divorce, because her lawyer advised that consenting to sex after catching one’s partner in flagrante delicto legally implies forgiveness.

Wearily, Dale tells Cheryl that he is not planning to renounce his marriage vows and is more concerned about their daughter, Anne, who wants to go to boarding school to get away from her mother. After bribing Cheryl with a new convertible, Dale tells the adoring Anne that she can pick out a school to attend.

Later, at the airfield, Dale explains to McVey that they will be flying under Instrument Flight Rules, which, to avoid head-on collisions, dictate that eastbound planes fly at odd-numbered altitudes and westbound, even-numbered, leaving 1,000 feet of airspace between their paths. When McVey asks about his collision, Dale, a Korean War veteran, explains how an off-course B-66 heading toward him momentarily awakened his wartime instincts, causing him to fly evasively upward. Although he was able to eject from his cabin, his survival was at the expense of the other plane, which crashed into his plane’s belly and trapped its occupants.

In a Washington, D.C. taxi, stewardess Kitty Foster and her boyfriend, pilot Mike Rule, whose passion is painting, are heading to the airport to serve on a Trans States Airline flight to Los Angeles. Kitty asks Mike to marry her, but he is distracted by one of his drawings that has been bought by a cigarette company to use for an ad. At the airport Dick Barnett, who will head the westbound crew, turns down a promotion to a desk job offered by airline executive J. B. After the passengers board, Dick takes off and settles into a flight path at 20,000 feet. Despite tension between them, Mike asks about Dick’s son, Dick, Jr., which causes Dick tacitly to reminisce about his child: Although Dick wants the baby named after him, later he and his son never get along, as Dick is a stern father who is quick to criticize and slow to compliment. When his wife Bev dies, his son finds no comfort from Dick’s stoic demeanor, and instead cries on family friend Mike’s shoulder. Dick’s perfectionist attitude further alienates his son, who, as a teenager, is arrested for a prank. In the present, Dick recalls Bev saying that he cannot understand his son, because he never makes mistakes. She explains, “Without mistakes, there is no forgiving, and without forgiving, there is no love.” Mike interrupts Dick’s reverie to point out that he is flying five hundred feet too high, but Dick, resenting criticism, claims he is flying above the turbulence for the comfort of the passengers and is contemptuous of Mike’s argument about “the crowded sky.” Flying east, Dale and McVey experience severe weather conditions and discover their radio is out of order, rendering communication with the air traffic control centers impossible.

After trying to distract McVey from his anxiety, Dale thinks about his final days at the Naval Academy: Cheryl, a rear admiral’s daughter, tricks him into marriage immediately after graduation by falsely claiming she is pregnant. After he refuses to accept preferential treatment by her father and is assigned to a Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, airfield, she begins having affairs. In the present, Dale concedes to himself that, without his unhappy marriage, he would not have Anne. In the westbound plane, Kitty asks Mike about the tension between him and Dick, causing Mike to remember events from the past: At a poker game, Mike’s senior officers announce that he is ready to be a captain, but Dick disagrees, saying that Mike cannot be devoted to both flying and painting. Having his promotion officially blocked by Dick, Mike gets drunk and awakens the next day in Kitty’s apartment. They have never met before, but she owns one of his paintings and has read about his deceased father Noah, a tormented but famous painter who burned all but four of his creations. Attracted to Kitty, Mike borrows a Cessna and flies her to see Noah’s extant works, but warns her that he intends to stay unmarried and without children, so he can pursue his art. Kitty says that she is uninterested in an affair, and later confides that years earlier she bore a child, whom she was forced to give up. While viewing a painting of Noah’s that is owned by one of the artist’s many former wives, Mike, to his surprise, learns that his father is alive and living in an asylum. After they visit Noah, Kitty says that she has fallen in love with Mike and believes that they may someday marry. When Mike’s thoughts return to the present, the plane is almost halfway across the continent. He again insists that Dick fly at the correct altitude, but Dick stubbornly refuses. Dale and McVey land in El Paso to have the radio repaired and then take off again. In the air, the radio again malfunctions, preventing Dale from sending calls, although he can receive them. Because he is unable to ask for an altimeter setting, he cannot ascertain that he is flying too low. Following standard procedure, he continues on course to avoid collision, but, as a signal to the control center, flicks his IFF switch, alerting a quick-thinking controller below who guesses his problem. When the controller radios a warning that Dale appears to have dropped 1,000 feet too low, Dale flies his jet upward. Above them, at Mike’s urging, Dick descends, aiming for an altitude of 2,500 feet, unaware that he is on a collision course with Dale’s plane. When Dale spots the plane heading toward him, he instantly chooses to sacrifice his plane for theirs and dives. The planes collide and, seconds later, the jet explodes.

In the collision, Dick’s plane loses one engine and his flight engineer is sucked out of the plane to his death while Kitty and another stewardess assist the frightened and injured passengers. With one wing on fire, Dick skillfully makes an emergency landing, saving most of his crew and passengers, and afterward, at a hearing, claims full responsibility for the crash, which, he explains, was due to his own “pilot error” coinciding with Dale’s plane’s mechanical failure. After acknowledging his own shortcomings, Dick is able to reunite with Dick, Jr. Later, Mike proposes to Kitty in front of a billboard featuring his painting

So Gordon Ramsay was in Cranbury, NJ filming an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" at Hannah & Mason's. For those that don't know, Hannah & Mason's is a high-end french-influenced new American place. They have been only open a couple of nights a week for dinner, and I believe business has been a little slow for them. We have dined here a few times, and have had the impression that the place was nice, with decent food, but not worth the prices they charge. Our dinner this time was different, to say the least.

We had a reservation for Friday Night which turned out to be the night before the restaurant relaunch. I ordered Chicken Saltimbocca and my wife ordered a Pork Medallion dish (a special). My chicken was awful. It was a huge breast, and it wasn't pounded thin, so the meat itself was a little dry and rather tasteless. Two shrimp were perched on top along with some Tarragon (!!!) prosciutto, and cheese, and it was dressed in a tangy lemon sauce. I don't know if was a mistake or what, but the tarragon fought with the other flavors to the point that the dish was barely edible. Classic Saltimbocca is made with sage... tarragon just doesn't work.

On the other hand, the pork dish was divine. The medallions were very tender, and dressed with a simple mellow mustard sauce. It was served with extremely buttery mashed potatoes and crisp green beans. This dish was harmonious and delicious, and, as it turns out, was Gordon Ramsay's special that night.

I won't go into details on the starter & dessert, but they were nothing special.

H&M's used to charge high-end fine-dining prices, but the service and food really didn't warrant it. When our main courses came, there was a "plate auction" (Who ordered the pork?), silverware wasn't replaced, etc.

On Saturday, they threw a "Farmer's Market" on Main St. to relaunch the newly-redecorated restaurant with a new, simplified menu with a "Farm-Fresh" concept. The new menu's most expensive item is the same price as the cheapest main dish on the old menu. The new menu is divided into sections such as Lighter Plates (Fontina, Asparagus & Green Onion Quiche, Ribeye Roast Beef Sandwich, Cured Salmon Platter, etc.), Soups (Roasted Carrot & Ginger, others), Salads (Caesar, Harvest, Cobb, Greek), and Entrees (Free Range Chicken Stew, Lamb Burger, Braised Short Ribs, Salmon and Crab Cakes, etc.)

I spoke with one of the owners that day, and he said they would now be open every night. However, when we came by on Monday for dinner, they were closed. (Maybe they needed a day off after the filming?) I hope they keep up with the changes... The changes make sense and will attract people to come to this restaurant regularly, not just for special occasions.

As for the experience of dining on camera for the TV show, it was interesting. When each course was served to us, a camera, sound man, and producer came over to our table. The camera was only a foot or so away from our faces, and the producer asked us questions, "How's the sauce?", "What do you think of dish?". My wife (a chef) was quite eloquent, while all I could get out was a few words. It was definitely a fun experience. I was very impressed when Ramsay made a few passes through the dining room to check on things, even though the cameras were not around when he did it. He seemed genuinely interested in what was going on and how people were enjoying their meals... it was definitely not a "show". We did get to talk to him a bit on Saturday, and he seems to be a very nice guy, despite his on-screen persona.

The Farmer's Market they did was a blast. Most of the town was out for it, and it featured some local purveyors like Terhune's Orchards, Hendrick's Farms & Dairy, a Pickle Maker, and others. Everyone was happily nibbling and enjoying the nice weather.

I hope H&M's does very well as a result of this. They are very nice people, and their heart is definitely in it.

The Pistons said Stuckey was taken to the Cleveland Clinic and his vital signs were stable, but was going for further testing and observation.

Stuckey was wheeled off the court on a stretcher during the third quarter after he collapsed into a trainer's arms on the bench during the game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stuckey walked off the floor for a timeout showing no signs of illness. After a few moments in a chair, though, Stuckey slumped over.

Medical personnel rushed over to the Pistons' bench with a stretcher. Play was halted for 12 minutes as the medical staff worked on Stuckey, placed an oxygen mask on his face and wheeled him into an ambulance.

Cleveland players huddled together with their heads bowed, while Pistons teammate Tayshaun Prince sat silent in his chair a few feet away as Stuckey was being treated.

Katrina Kaif has become Bollywood's latest Lux diva. Katrina's beauty soap deal comes in the wake of reports that the last Lux ad-film, featuring Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan and hubby Abhishek, failed to create an expected effect.

Katrina is the reigning queen of Hindi mainstream films. She joins the league of Bollywood's biggest heroines who have endorsed the beauty soap down the decades, including Madhubala, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Juhi Chawla, Madhuri Dixit, Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya.

Kat's entry with a new campaign gives the 'soap drama' a new twist. "I don't think every actress in Bollywood has been associated with Lux. I am honoured to join the people who have been with it over the years,"said Katrina. The new Lux ad-film was shot over four days in Bangkok. Katrina looks ravishing in it in a blue gown styled by designer Rocky S. The film has her entering a late-night party where Katrina brushes a guy accidentally and the guy is impressed by her smooth skin and sparks fly between the two.

Ad guru Prahlad Kakkar says: "It's about a brand endorser's positioning. Brands are interested in Katrina because, besides being successful, she is young and has an international appeal. Ash is not getting younger. Brands want to rope in Kat now as she is the future."This is not the first time that Katrina is cutting into Aishwarya's bastion. Last year, Katrina had snapped up the Barbie doll contract, for which Ash was initially approached.

She scooped the Nakshatra diamonds endorsement deal, of which Ash was the face till then.

Kat also dislodged Ash as the most Googled girl from Bollywood, according to Google data.

Also, the New York actress left Ash behind to grab the 48th spot in a beauty poll last year. In the list, Ash finished at the 60th position.

"Ash is hardly visible on the screen these days while Kat's releases are a regular fare. Ash has to be more visible to be in demand. For advertisers, a star's face is the biggest asset because audiences can then easily identify with the product,"Manish Porwal, managing director of marketing solutions firm Alchemist, says.

"AbhiAsh's first appearance after their marriage was utterly wasted in the ad. It had no novelty or surprise factor. On the other hand, the Lux ad- film featuring Katrina stands for what she represents - youth. Ash is looking good even after her marriage but Kat beats her in the visibility and youth bracket,"Kakkar says.

Katrina, on her part, has been flying high in the endorsement world of late. She recently replaced Priyanka Chopra as the brand ambassador for a telecom firm, besides becoming the face of a shampoo brand earlier endorsed by Sushmita Sen.

Katrina is among the top female endorsers in Bollywood today and commands a whopping pay packet of around Rs 4 crore per deal.

About the same time, her close aide Naseemuddin Siddiqui inaugurated the bridge in Lucknow, a whole 24 hours before he was supposed to.

Naseemuddin Siddiqui, Uttar Pradesh PWD Minister says, "We had decided this much earlier. Mayawati was to inaugurate the bridge on her birthday on January 15, but because of the incomplete approach road, it didn't happen.''

R P N Singh, Minister of State, Surface Transport says, "This government is afraid of development. Congress has pledged that it will bring the same development in Uttar Pradesh as it is doing in other parts of the country."

"Inauguration is not a big deal. It doesn't matter who does it, Centre or state. But the problem lies in the fact that the state keeps putting obstacles in our projects", he added.

World over bridges are made to connect people and bring them closer. But perhaps only in Uttar Pradesh where Mayawati rules the state while the Congress is at the Centre can there be a bridge which does just the opposite.

Srinagar teen's killing: BSF officer handed over to police

BSF Commanding Officer R K Birdi, allegedly involved in the killing of a Srinagar teen, has been handed over to the police.

16-year-old Zahid Farooq was killed by the BSF in Srinagar last month.

Sources say, BSF had informed the police that they will produce Birdi before the police today.

Earlier police had written a letter to the BSF asking them to produce the officer R K Birdi before the Special Investigation Team of police on Thursday last.

The government sources say they have given clear-cut instructions to the police to proceed against the Commandant.

There are also instructions from the Union Home Ministry that there should be no compromise if the Commandant was found involved into the crime.

Zahid and his friends were on their way home after their cricket game on February 5 in Srinagar's Nishat area was rained out. They came across three BSF vehicles and began shouting at it. Incensed, constable Lakhvinder Kumar allegedly got out and shot Zahid at point blank range.

After his killing, BSF had initially flatly denied its involvement, but following pressure from the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and Chief Minister Omar Adbullah, BSF handed over its constable Lakhvinder Kumar to the police and admitted to the guilt.

Commandant Birdi was suspended after NDTV reported about his involvement into the killing and forcing constable Lakhvinder to shoot the teenager.

And during the course of investigation, two BSF personnel deposed before a local court testifying that Lakhvinder was forced to fire by Commandant Birdi.

He first snatched his rifle, corked the gun and then asked him to fire on teenager.

This corroborated the initial statement of an eyewitness that an officer wearing white dress was behind the shooting.

Initially the BSF had tried to hush up the case. Sources said commandant Birdi even fudged the weapon, mislead his higher headquarters that there was no presence of the BSF in the area when the shooting incident took place.

Sources say police have got conclusive evidence about Birdi's involvement into the killing.

In turn Mr Zuma highlighted how Britain helped in the efforts to "free" his country and later assisted in establishing a democratic government.
The Queen told her guests, who included Prime Minister Gordon Brown, senior royals and Cabinet ministers, Mr Mandela's release from prison 20 years ago heralded "an extraordinary process of liberation and democratic renewal".
"The task was daunting in its scale and ambition but was achieved through a deliberate and courageous effort of reconciliation and peaceful resolution of differences," she said.

Before arriving in the UK this week Mr Zuma, who has three wives, attacked Britain's colonial past in an interview.
He was apparently responding to reports by the British media about his polygamous lifestyle.

The president, who was joined by his third and newest wife, said: "We cannot forget the extraordinary role they played at the forefront of a global movement for a free South Africa, as the global anti-apartheid movement has its roots in this country
"We also appreciate the assistance that the United Kingdom provided during our transition and in the establishment of the new democratic government."
Later today Mr Brown will hold talks with the president with Zimbabwe expected to be high on the agenda.
South Africa's strong links with the nation make it well placed to try and influence the leadership of the country.
Other subjects likely to be discussed include climate change, the global economy and the football World Cup, which South Africa is hosting this summer and England hopes to host in 2018.
During the day the president and his wife Tobeka Madiba will visit a Sainsbury's store in Greenwich, southeast London with the food retailer's chief executive Justin King and Environment Secretary Hilary Benn.

The website Funnyordie.com brought all of the past presidents together Wednesday for a hilarious presidential summit with a twist.

The presidents are played by comedians from "Saturday Night Live" who have portrayed U.S. presidents in the past.

The video went viral as soon as it was released. No doubt it's going to become a classic with the all-star cast of comedians in the five and one-half minute video.

The cast of the presidential summit on the Funny or Die site includes Will Ferrell as President George W. Bush, Darrell Hammond as President Bill Clinton, Dana Carvey as President George H.W. Bush, Dan Aykroyd plays President Jimmy Carter and Chevy Chase returns as President Gerald Ford.

The only comedian who isn't a veteran SNL regular is Jim Carrey who appears as Ronald Reagan. He takes the place of "SNL" funny-man, Phil Hartman, who typically played Reagan on the show. Hartman died in 1998.

Of course, there's a reason behind this video and it's not just a reunion of SNL cast members. Directed by Ron Howard, the video is made in association with Americans for Financial Reform, a pro-regulation coalition of labor and consumer activists.

So, there's a lot of funny yet a great deal of thought provoking points in the video. You may not see it as a that, but there it does provoke both laughter and thought ... something that politics seems to do on its own without big name comedians.

A JPL scientist says we ended up losing 1.26 millionth of a second of a day, and that the magnitude 8.8 quake also shifted the axis around which the Earth rotates.

When a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck South America last weekend, the ground rumbled in Chile, the sea rose in the Pacific, and a day on Earth got shorter. Not by much.

Earthlings ended up losing 1.26 millionth of a second of a day. You can't sense it. Nor is your dog aware of it.

But while other experts charted the shift of tectonic plates and the swell of ocean waters wrought by the quake, geophysicist Richard Gross mathematically calculated the temblor's disruption of the length of the day.

The thrust-fault quake -- in which plates under the Earth's surface moved vertically -- caused mass to be redistributed, said Gross, who works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge.

"On average, the mass of the Earth got a bit closer to the rotation axis," he said. As a result, Gross said, the planet rotates faster -- "just like a spinning skater brings her arms in closer to her body to rotate faster." When the planet rotates faster, the day shortens, he said.

Gross studies the Earth's rotation and how it is affected by cataclysmic forces of nature. "Anything that moves mass around on the Earth I take a look at," he said.

And it takes a mega-earthquake to attract Gross' attention.

The magnitude 6.7 Northridge earthquake didn't even register on the scale of throwing off the Earth's rotation.

"I didn't look at that earthquake," he said. "It takes something like the Chilean or Indonesian earthquake before I look at it."

This earthquake also shifted the axis around which the Earth rotates, Gross said.

Although the Chilean quake shortened the day by 1.26 microseconds -- the unit of time for millionths of a second -- the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake that triggered the catastrophic Asian tsunami shaved 7 microseconds off the day, according to Gross' calculations.

Will our biological sleep clocks notice? Circadian rhythms can be affected by even a shift in minutes, said Michael Terman, director of the Center for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms at Columbia University Medical Center.

"Circadian biology . . . is indeed sensitive to the Earth's rotation, but a change of 1.26 microseconds won't have significant impact -- I hope!" Terman said.

Of course, losing just 1.26 microseconds a day takes a couple of millenniums to add up to one single second of lost time. (2,174 years to be more precise.) Gross suggests it's not worth tallying that way.

"It takes a lot of these big earthquakes to add up to even a second," he said.

Far from evoking that textbook illustration of a smooth round ball of continents and blue oceans, Gross describes Earth as a planet of unevenly distributed mass wobbling as it rotates, imperfectly balanced, around its axis, its physique woefully pear-shaped. "It's a bit fatter south of the Equator," Gross said.

"The Earth is not completely elastic. It's kind of like putty," he said. "If you have a sudden shock to it, it will continue to deform later in response to that shock."

NASA : Chile Earthquake May Have Shifted Earth’s Axis, Shortened Days

In addition to causing widespread death and destruction, last week’s devastating earthquake in Chile may have shifted the Earth’s axis permanently and created shorter days, according to scientists at NASA.

Based on calculations thus far, every day from now on should be 1.26 microseconds shorter.

While the change probably won’t be affecting our daily schedules too much (a microsecond is a millionth of a second), it is unsettling to think about how much impact something as concentrated as an earthquake can have on the entire planet.

The name of "Alejandra Jonas" was set up as a Facebook memorial for Jonas Brother fans after a Chile earthquake victim was found dead wearing a Jonas Brothers t-shirt and clenching tight to a fan poster.

"Alejandra Jonas", who's real name is reportedly Alejandra Bustos, is being honored by Jonas Brothers fans who say they've "lost a member" of their fan family. The Facebook page and corresponding Twitter ID #RIPAlejandraJonas were established in the name of the fan.

“This is dedicated to Alejandra Bustos who died in the chile earthquake with her jonas shirt on and poster in her hand," writes the Facebook page. "We truly do miss you Ale and we love you so much! Your Jonas sisters"

After word spread of the Jonas Brothers fan and Facebook page, Twitter user "Madison Bieber" spread that fan "Madison Bieber" had also died.

"So, a Beibler created, "Madison Bieber" & said she died. So they can compete with Jonas fans? I cant comprehend this," one Twitter user typed late Wednesday afternoon, signifying "a Biebler" as a Justin Bieber fan.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The already young Columbus Blue Jackets got a lot younger on Wednesday afternoon.

The club traded veteran forwards Raffi Torres and Fredrik Modin and defenseman Milan Jurcina — all potential unrestricted free agents — for three draft picks and a depth blue-liner.

"It's just about expiring contracts and not having rights to the players," Columbus general manager Scott Howson said. "When you're in that situation, you have to make a decision. Are you going to hang onto them?"

Torres, his wife and 3-month-old daughter will be moving to Buffalo, not far from his parents' home in suburban Toronto.

"They're a pretty good team, a team with a lot of skill," he said of the Sabres. "I'll do what I do best — try to be physical and try to score some goals along the way."

Howson, his back up against Wednesday's 3 p.m. trade deadline, also sent defenseman Mathieu Roy to Florida for University of Michigan center Matt Rust. Then he also dealt former first-round draft pick Alexandre Picard, taken eighth overall in the 2004 draft, to Phoenix for another ex-Michigan player, winger Chad Kolarik.

The flurry of deals save the Blue Jackets money, add prospects and give them more ways to re-energize after a season in which nothing has seemed to work out right. The club stands 25-28-11 and is 14th of the 15 teams in the Western Conference with 61 points.

Torres, Modin (who waived a no-trade clause) and Jurcina could have signed elsewhere this summer without the Blue Jackets getting anything in return. So the club got some value out of them in the form of players or picks, in addition to not having to pay their sizable salaries for even the last 18 games of the season.

Howson said the market was tight and playoff teams were wary.

"Teams are careful with their assets," he said. "The buyers are always trying to wait it out and maybe the price will come down, and the people who are selling are holding onto their price, hoping they're going to get it. It really does become a game of chess or chicken at the end. At some point you've got to jump if you're going to get anything done."

First, Howson traded Torres, one of the Blue Jackets' most productive players, to the Buffalo Sabres for defenseman Nathan Paetsch and a second-round draft pick.

Torres, 28, who can become an unrestricted free agent this summer, scored 19 goals and added 12 assists for the Blue Jackets in 60 games this season.

He said when the Blue Jackets fell out of the playoff picture, it improved the chances he might be traded.

"It's tough to win in this league on a consistent basis," he said. "It's tough to pinpoint one thing (that went wrong). At the end of the day, we just didn't get the job done."

Paetsch, 26, is a journeyman blue-liner who has seven goals and 35 assists in 157 career NHL games.

The Blue Jackets then sent Jurcina back to Washington. They had acquired him along with forward Chris Clark earlier this season from the Capitals for forward Jason Chimera. In return, Columbus received a conditional sixth-round draft pick because Jurcina, injured during the Olympics, will soon undergo sports-hernia surgery that will sideline him for 2-4 weeks.

Jurcina and Modin both played in the Vancouver Olympics, Jurcina for Slovakia and Modin for Sweden.

Jurcina, 26, had one goal and two assists in 17 games with Columbus.

The Blue Jackets then dealt the 35-year-old Modin to Los Angeles for a conditional seventh-round pick. Modin has seen only limited action this season due to a series of injuries. Modin won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004.

The left winger has 222 goals and 225 assists in 838 career NHL games, but had just two goals and four assists in 24 games this season.

The day ended with Howson dealing for Rust and Kolarik. Around Columbus, when the talk turns to a Michigan center, everybody wants to know what kind of a blocker he is.

The moves helped add some fresh faces and attitudes to a team that is built on youth, with 25-year-old captain Rick Nash and 21-year-old franchise goaltender Steve Mason.

Roy had played well at times this season, contributing 10 assists in 31 games. Picard had never lived up to his draft-day promise, mustering no goals and two assists in 67 games with the Blue Jackets.

The R&B group will debut the lip for “One Day on Earth,” today on "BET's 106 & Park." The song is first single from their upcoming album Vacancy. The romantic ballad was penned by R.Kelly, and it talks about a man who wants to spend his last day alive with the love of his life.  

The lead single off of any album usually sets the tone for the rest of the project, so Brutha thought this would be the perfect single to herald their return.

“We believe as artists you should come with your guns drawn, and ‘One Day On This Earth’ is our big song,” said Papa. “It’s only right that we come with it first. It’s a big love song.”

“Our album is about fun, sex, love and all of the above, “ explained Anthony. “It’s kind of a Vegas themed album. ‘One Day On This Earth’ is a love song. So we’re dropping the love song first, and we’re working backwards. So, you’re going to find out what kind of trouble we got in for those three days.” 

When we asked them what kind of trouble they were talking about, the fellas only said, “You’ll see.” Of course, we’ll find out when Vacancy comes out, but no drop date has been announced at this time.

Vacancy is Brutha’s sophomore album, and the guys told us they had a lot more creative control for this project.  
“The first time around we didn’t get to be ourselves, we were almost like robots,” said Anthony. “I think we’re more sure about what we want to sing about and what we want to do.”

This is Brutha’s first music video from their sophomore album “Vacancy” that is expected to hit stores late spring or early summer. The music video was shot in Los Angeles, California by Rage.

Earlier today (via live chat) TheNext2Shine caught up with the boy band right before their initial video debut on 106 & Park. They said: “We are definitely excited [about the new release]! We all have butterflies”.
