Orlando Pirates Make South Africa Proud

2013-11-03T14:15:00.001+02:00

First of all, this is going to be shortest post we have ever made on this blog; nevertheless, that does not in any way keep me from commending Orlando Pirates on their gutsy performance displayed on the 1st leg of the CAF final again Al Ahly of Egypt last night.

It seemed as though Pirates were going to get slapped in their own backyard but that was not the case. A beautiful goal in the last minute of the referee's optional time by Thabo Matlaba saw Orlando Pirates leave the Orlando Stadium with their heads help up high, and that was the case as far as all South African Soccer fans are concerned.

With that being said, we would like to congratulate Orlando Pirates for making us all proud, they truly deserve to be representing us in the final.

We would also like to wish them good luck in Egypt.

Big Ups To The Mighty Buccaneers...

Kaizer Chiefs gets off to an excellent start to the new PSL season

2012-08-17T05:34:00.001+02:00

Chiefs started off with a bang as they hammered Amazulu 6-0 in their first PSL match of the 2012/2013 season. The following are the results for all matches played thus far:

12/08/12	Platinum Stars	3 - 1	Moroka Swallows

10/08/12	Orlando Pirates	2 - 1	Golden Arrows
Ajax Cape Town	1 - 1	SuperSport United

These results see Chiefs on top of the log. Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs manager Bobby Motaung is having troubles of his own having been arrested for fraud concerning the Mbombela stadium tender... This does not interest me much, I'd rather focus on soccer.

Who will the 2012/2013 Premier Soccer League season?

Siyabonga Nkosi returns to Naturena as Pirates confirms Chansa's departure.

2012-07-28T19:47:00.001+02:00

According to Orlando Pirates' official website, it has been confirmed that Isaac Chansa has been sold to a Chinese club Henan Jianye FC. The Pirates statement reads: “Although the club would have liked to keep the African Cup of Nations winner at the team for the new season, the player had already expressed his intentions to move overseas for a fresh challenge and hence the club ceded to the players request.

“Chansa has represented the club with distinction since returning from his short stint in Sweden. The Zambian international was instrumental in both treble winning seasons for the Buccaneers.

“On behalf of the Orlando Pirates family we would like to wish Isaac Chansa all the best at his new club.”

Meanwhile, after the signing of Zimbabwean striker Takesure Chinyama, Head Coach Augusto Palacios said that he is happy to have the player at the club by adding: “At Orlando Pirates we only want to bring the best players. He signed with the team because he is a good player. I like the way he makes his runs and he has good touches on the ball.

“He trained with us today and from what I could see, he is a player with tremendous potential; playing for Pirates is different – the players have very little time to adjust because this is a big club and the fans demand a lot from the players.

“He needs to gain match fitness and I hope he will give that depth in the team’s’ attack,” Palacios concluded.

On the other hand, Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed a surprise return of Siyabonga Nkosi to Naturena. We are all entitled to our own opinions but Nkosi's return to Chiefs doesn't seem like a good move at all. What are your thoughts?

Manchester United set for Cape Town against Ajax

2012-07-20T08:57:00.000+02:00

After their 1-0 victory over Amazulu on Wednesday evening, Manchester United will be looking to continue where they left off when they will be up against Ajax Cape Town on 21/07/2012. United are in the process of preparing for next season’s English Premier League and will be making a whistle-stop tour of SA before heading off on their traditional pre-season trip to the Far East.

The most popular team in the world with 659 million fans worldwide, according to a survey carried out by market research agency Kantar; finished second to Manchester City in last season's English Premier League.
Ferguson has admitted there was plenty of rustiness against Amazulu, suggesting his players tired in the second half. He expects a better display against Ajax, and, aside from Kagawa, the Scot is likely to start with experienced internationals Anderson and Antonio Valencia.

With that being said and Ajax approaching crisis point, a positive performance and result would mean a lot to the players and management. Their failure to finish in the top eight and qualify for the MTN8 at the end of last season was a huge blow for a club that had finished second the season before.

Gordon Igesund inevitably named as Bafana Bafana coach.

2012-07-03T21:22:00.001+02:00

It came as no surprise as the South African Football Association (SAFA) announced the appointment of Gordon Igesund as the new Bafana Bafana coach in Johannesburg on Saturday 30th June 2012. He was apparently handed a two year performance based contract: "I feel very honoured and privileged to be in charge of an asset like the national football team," Igesund said at the press conference at Safa House.

Does anyone remember when the majority of South African football fans cried for Igesund's appointment as Bafana Bafana coach? I do, but our football association made it all seem like their own brilliant idea; taking this whole process through a selection criteria which we all knew its outcome beforehand, hilarious! Gordon Igesund became Bafana Bafana coach long before his "official" appointment, and I am more than certain that no one can argue this fact. I feel sorry for poor Steve after proving that he has a certain degree of ability to make some positive changes in our national team as the head coach. Better luck next time Steve.

Let us all hope that Gordon will take us to the promised land as he has a mountain higher than Himalaya to climb. SAFA expects him to at least reach the semi-final of the African Cup of Nations which we will be hosting next year. Good luck Gordon!

Bafana Bafana registers another disappointing draw. Why?

2012-06-09T21:21:00.001+02:00

Another miserable afternoon of footballing experience was all that Bafana Bafana could elicit after they played to another disappointing 0-0 draw against Botswana in Botswana's backyard. If you ask me, this has absolutely nothing to do with the coaches. SAFA can hire and fire as much as they please, but in my opinion; the root of all this mess lies far beyond coaches' performances.

Perhaps it's about time we looked at the REAL reason why players perform the way they do. Could it be because of lack of source of motivation which in this case would be money? Have we ever asked ourselves why coaches are being paid more than players? It does not make sense to me for a coach to get more financial remuneration than players who ACTUALLY kick the ball around the field of play. Think of it this way, would a soccer match take place without a coach? Yes, because that is exactly what happened today against Botswana. Now, ask yourself a question whether a soccer match would take place without players or not.

As far as today's match is concerned: I wonder why most of us expected South Africa to win against Botswana in Botswana whilst they failed to win against Ethiopia in their own backyard. Well, how about this, SAFA could discontinue allowing South African players to go and play overseas and start paying them to play at home. Do we have quality overseas players looking to have a footballing career in SA? I'll leave that for you to think about.

What do I know anyways?

How to Understand Soccer Strategy: Step-by-Step Instructions for SA Soccer Players

2012-06-08T10:29:00.004+02:00

Pay attention to the diagonal runs behind the defense. A center forward making an angled run just behind another defender, say a 10 yard sprint, at just the right moment, could be getting ready to receive the ball. Is the opposition playing zone-defense and passing the offensive player to another defender? Is the player making the pass under pressure?
Look for how a third man running opens up the game. A midfielder and forward might exchange a few passes on the side and then a defender (a third player) will break towards the goal from behind to receive the ball – almost out of nowhere.
Watch how quick give-and-goes, both static and moving, open up the defense. A player can play a wall-pass (a give and go) just to get more time on the ball if he’s being closed down (static), or can play the ball and then sprint into the space to receive the ball. Keeping the ball moving relieves pressure and opens up space. Quick passes (the ball moves much faster than anyone else) breaks down a defense.
Keeping them busy

Discover how switching the field of play gives players more time and space. Two or three passes on one side of the field and suddenly there’s no space, the defense has closed the offensive team down, and that’s when they look for a long switch to the defender or midfielder on the other side. In soccer terms it's called, ‘short short long’ or 'switching play' – a few short passes and then a long pass. At times, this switch, when done cleverly, can surprise the other team, who is preoccupied on one side, and results in a chance for a goal or a cross.
Learn how counter attacks can lead to goal scoring opportunities. A team may just hunker down and pack their players into their goal box and leave one player up high, waiting to break down the field when they win possession.
Come to embrace the long ball in soccer. Don’t knock the long ball (no pun intended). Watch how a team might pick out their forward with a long ball. The forward will control the ball and enable the rest of his team to move up the field. Or, one long pass can lead to a perfect lay off or flick to an on rushing player for a goal.
Observe how 'overlaps' create opportunities for crosses. A wide defender might make a run around the outside midfielder, who has cut inside, and join the attack. An effective cross creates a goal scoring chance.
Watch how a 'take over' (when players interchange positions) opens up space or a time and a window of space for a shot or pass. One player might dribble right at another player and exchange the ball, the other player screening the defender for a moment.
Savor the blind pass. Look for a subtle back heel to an unseen player, looking in one direction but playing the ball the other, dribbling to the right but serving a long diagonal pass to the left side (you know that player is there). Watch for that one more pass that almost doesn't seem necessary but results in a tap in goal.
Head to head

Enjoy the most exciting play in soccer, when someone takes on another player on the dribble. Watch how they change pace once they’ve made a move, a cut or a feint or a step-over or ten. Sometimes it's a fake shot, a subtle shoulder dip and then a burst of speed.

The Final PSL Fixtures for the 2011/2012 Season.

2012-05-19T04:51:00.001+02:00

The following PSL fixtures are scheduled for Saturday 19/05/12 which will all commence at 15:00. All eyes will be on the two matches of the day, namely; the Golden Arrows vs Orlando Pirates and the Maritzburg United vs Moroka Swallows match.

Other matches that will take place on the day are as follows:

Platinum Stars vs Wits University
Santos vs Jomo Cosmos
Mamelodi Sundowns vs Free State Stars
Kaizer Chiefs vs AmaZulu
Bloemfontein Celtic vs Supersport United
Black Leopards vs Ajax Cape Town

Who will be crowned the Premier Soccer League 2011/2012 season champions? I sitll say that Pirates have more experience in winning titles in the last minutes, they have done it before and they surely are ready to do it once more.

PSL Results for the Weekend of 12/05/12- Orlando Pirates maintain top spot on the Premier Soccer League table.

2012-05-13T21:24:00.000+02:00

What a mouth-watering afternoon of South African footballing action as we witnessed the most amazing display of soccer from the SA Premier Soccer League teams. The following results saw Pirates stay on top of the Premier Soccer League table with only one match remaining in the title chase:

Saturday 12/05/2012

AmaZulu 2 - 2 Santos

Ajax Cape Town 4 - 1 Golden Arrows

Jomo Cosmos 1 - 1 Maritzburg United

Free State Stars 1 - 2 Kaizer Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns 0 - 1 Supersport United

Moroka Swallows 2 - 1 Platinum Stars

Orlando Pirates 2 - 1 Bloemfontein Celtic

Moroka Swallows are only two points behind the log leaders as the Premier Soccer league nears the end, also looking promising for a possible championship title that greatly depends on the outcome of Pirates' last league match. Kaizer Chiefs left matters too late with three successive league match victories that sees them lie fifth on the log.

Will Pirates defend their title, or are we going to see Swallows lifting the Premier Soccer League title this season? I guess we just have to wait for the outcome next week' last Premier Soccer League matches.

02/05/12 Premier Soccer League Results

Kaizer Chiefs 2 - 0 Mamelodi Sundowns, Bloemfontein Celtic 4 - 2 Ajax Cape Town, Golden Arrows 1 - 1 Wits University, Platinum Stars 4 - 1 Jomo Cosmos and Santos 0 - 1 Free State Stars

The above results saw Sundowns lose to Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday night at the FNB stadium. This has put a massive dent on Sundowns' hopes of lifting the Premier Soccer League title this season, whereas Pirates fans showed lots of love to Kaizer Chiefs on the night. Orlando Pirates are now three points clear at the top with only two matches remaining. Free State Stars are now level on points with third placed SuperSport United at 48 points. Both teams are four points behind the log leaders Orlando Pirates. I must say that I see Pirates lifting this one at the end of the season. Swallows will have a chance to move to second position on the log as they will be visiting Black Leopards on Friday 04/05/12 at 20:00.

PSL Results for the Weekend of 21/04/2012_Kaizer Chiefs registers another loss.

It seems to be getting tougher for the so-called big guns of the Premier Soccer League as the weekend produced the following results: Saturday 21/04/2012's matches could elicit the following: Golden Arrows 3 - 1 Jomo Cosmos, OBVIOUS result, Maritzburg United 1 - 0 Mamelodi Sundowns, it's tough up there; and Platinum Stars 0 - 1 Free State Stars. Steve Khompela seems to be in business as his side moved to fifth position ahead of Chiefs on the log. Later in the evening of the same day saw SupersSport United move to third position after they defeated Ajax Cape Town by 2 goals to 1. Orlando Pirates hang on to the first spot after being held to 0-0 draw by Wits.

Then came Sunday 22/04/2012 which didn't turn out to be a memorable day for Kaizer Chiefs and its fans as they lost again, this time in the hands of relegation threatened Santos by 2 goals to 1. This has put a massive dent on Chiefs' title hopes, also stirring some serious disappointment to its fans. I have been going through some of the Kaizer Chiefs fans Facebook comments and picked up that they are on a mission to discontinue attending matches for the rest of the season. Some of them even threatened to withdraw their memberships with the club only until the end of the season. Bloemfontein Celtic played to 1-all draw with Swallows who are also threatening to win the league title this season. Swallows are currently fourth on the log with four points behind the log leaders Orlando Pirates. Amazulu have moved to seventh position behind Kaizer Chiefs after hammering Black Leopards by 4 goals to 1. One question still remains: Who will win the SA Premier Soccer League title this season?
