Tips on Travelling to Sabah

Last week I read a horrible review about Sabah (and Malaysia in general) from worldtravelfamily.com, I couldn't feel much sorrier about the harrowing experience the family had to endure during their vacation here. But I would like to explain more about the real situation here, before the rest of you jump to conclusions.

Hence, I am willing to share some tips as a local to everyone who wanted to travel in Sabah. Of course, your level of comfort correlates with how much you wanted to spend during your stay here. I've seen backpackers who are satisfied with sleeping in a backpackers, but most travelers would prefer a nice and comfortable trip!

Planning your trip to Sabah

Its actually very easy to book your trip to Sabah and when you came here. Pre-Covid19 era, there are numerous flights connecting to Kota Kinabalu which is the capital. So first thing that you need to worry is the fare from your country to Kota Kinabalu. You can of course start looking at accommodations in Sabah, and places that you wanted to go, so keep that in your list. I know some travel agents will charge maximum for everything, but I'm sure there are good ones there - so decide early if you want to plan your trip without travel agents - benefits - you decide where you want to go and sleep or using travel agents where of course you'll be less worried about everything but not sure what you will get! HOTELS

Booking your hotel - so, depending on your budget, you can choose to stay at a 4-5 star hotels, many of them in KK (Kota Kinabalu) - price range 150USD per night and above or 3 stars and lower - but call and ask if they provide buffets or free meals, because some hotels do not include that in their bill! From experience, even some 3 star hotels provide 3 meals a day! So google around the place and see if meals are included, and whether there's gyms and everything. By booking your own hotel, you are in charge the level of comfort of your trip!

INSURANCE and HEALTH

Insurance - travel insurance is a must for most foreigners, please check if you can be admitted to the nearest private hospital in case anything happen! However, a visit to a private doctor's clinic takes about 30 minutes and usually less than RM100 - including medication! If you do get sick and need hospital stays, please google your nearest PRIVATE hospitals such as Gleneagles, KPJ, Rafllesia or JMC if you can, if no, the public hospitals are still available especially for emergencies.

Arriving in Sabah

The airport is just a 10 minute drive to the city centre, so you can just hail a taxi from the airport to your hotel. Make sure you print your map location or show your hotel from google map in your phone! Costs about RM30.

Booking your trips - there are lots of travel agents available throughout the city, you just have to shop around but my tips is GO DIRECTLY to the Sabah Tourism Board Office at Gaya Street, https://www.sabahtourism.com/ and ask them how to get to the places that you want. I am sure they will be happy to give advice to you. Exception: Booking the Mt Kinabalu Climbing of course, you will need to book this in advance!

FOOD

Food - Sabah food is known for its 'freshness' especially if you like eating fish and seafood. If you do eat fish, you might ask around for "Fish Soup with Noodles" - there are 2 versions, spicy and non spicy, its up to you to choose. Otherwise, if you eat meat and everything, you can see Indian, Malay, Chinese Restaurants. If you want a Western Style meal, then my advice is to google Upperstar Restaurant or Secret Recipe Restaurants, there are of course some other types of Restaurants such as little Italy, Pizza places, etc but you just have to google them, that is if KFC, McDonalds, PizzaHut is not your type of food. Otherwise, the fastfoods are there as a last resort!! HOWEVER, If you do choose to go with whatever the travel agent gives, then don't be surprised if the food is below your expectation.

Generally, the further you go from the capital KK, the lesser options of food there are for you. If you go to almost every restaurants, the menu will be fried rice, fried noodles, fried rice noodles, noodle soup, if you are ok with that then that's fine. But if you don't then I am sorry that you might have to improvise., go to a local supermarket and buy produce there. Otherwise, you could ask if anyone can tell you where you can find chicken chop, lamb chops or pizzas, most likely there will be at least one and that will most likely be a decent place for you too!

FOR VEGETARIANS: I'm sorry to say there are very few places that serve vegetarian foods in Sabah. As far as I can remember, there is a decent vegetarian buffet at the ground flood in centre point, you can go to a vegetarian restaurant in Suria Sabah. After all, google is your friend. But when it comes to sitting in a local restaurant, ask them to stir fry vegetables for you with or without eggs, please make sure to let them know that you don't want meat, fish or anything. Just veggies. Sabah is a good producer of vegetables so I am sure they can give you at least 2 types of veggies. However, in general foods for vegetarians are still very limited in Sabah restaurants - especially rural, so do not expect too much!

Tips: you might want to install the FOOD PANDA app or GRAB food to help you order food easily!

TRANSPORTATIONs

- If you do not wish to travel via travel agents, its fine but make sure you know where exactly you wanted to go. If you go to the main taxi station in KK, you will be able to book a whole taxi for yourself or your family. You might even able to negotiate the taxi driver, and ask him if you can book him throughout the day to see for example Ranau, Mt Kinabalu and return to KK in the evening, but make sure you have to agree on a price first.

-I am sorry to say to World Travel Family Blog - we DO NOT HAVE SEPARATE BUS OR PLANE FARES for foreigners and locals. So we paid the same RM35 bus tickets that you took, so please put that in mind :).

My suggestion for foreigners is to use a taxi, however if you are confident in driving, you may be able to book a car, but be cautious as the road condition in Sabah may not be similar to your home countries.

You can definitely use a Coach, especially is you wanted to travel to the interior such as Keningau, Tenom. If you wanted to travel to Sandakan, Lahad Datu or Tawau, my advice is to take a plane as its much quicker and less hassle to you.

TOILETS

This is a big problem not only in Sabah but throughout Malaysia!!! I am sorry to say, but the norms for the toilet here is a hole and running water, and it may not be the most hygienic!! most often than not you will not find a toilet paper, or toilet tissue as they are called here. So be prepared to bring a toilet paper with you wherever you are!! If in anycase, you still need a proper toilet, do not be afraid to go to a nearby hotel or restaurants and ask if you can use their toilet. Sometimes they will be happy to let you use it for a small fee, not more than MYR1! I am strongly against using a public toilet unless you do not have any other choice.

Places to Stay in Kundasang - around Mt Kinabalu

I would stay away from the lodge in the national park as there are no wifi and its very difficult to order food from there. HOWEVER, if you google around, there are nice lodges, hotels and even homestays around the places, you just have to google it and read the reviews! Make sure you ask about wifi, food and consider the distance from your point of reference.

ORANGUTANS

Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary - most people expect that you can hug and touch an orangutan there, but the fact is you can't or rarely are permitted to do so. Yes there will be dedicated times during the day when you can see the orang utan from a glass windowed platform and that is when they are fed by the workers there. I'm not sure if there are still paths that you can walk on, but last time, my experience was not too bad! As I can still see orangutans randomly moving and hanging around the pathway. BUT, if you expect that you will be able to take selfies with them, then no.

Extra tips - there's a nearby sanctuary for Sunbears too, so there's another reason if you want to visit the place.

NIGHT WALKS

You probably have more luck seeing wild animals in Danum Valley, You can google and ask any travel agents that provide such services.

INTERIOR REGIONS

Most tourists do not know that the interior region actually has wonderful places as well. In Tenom in particular, about 4 hours from KK, you can actually go to the Sabah Agricultural Park, which is a wonderful place to see plants, flowers and just a different set of view of Sabah. Here is their facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100064870290177. Of course you can enquire more of this at the Sabah Tourism Office. I suggest a one day one night stay in Tenom and there are hotels available in Tenom or nearby Keningau. There is also a beautiful native house in Tenom, The Murut Cultural House, which is worth a visit!

Keningau also has its own charm where you can visit a small museum, there are several good places to hike such as Matanoi Hill, Dongguan Hill, Chanang Hill, and a few riverside picnic places. I'll give you suggestions if you need more information on this. There are more nicer hotels in Keningau and more western food places as well!! Its nicer and quieter than KK if that is what you want. There are also a few lodges at the national park in Keningau, which provide nice views at night - but please make sure you book in advance.

STRAY ANIMALS

Most likely during your trip in Sabah you will encounter free-roaming animals like cows, goats and buffalos. Most often than not, you will see some skinny, sick looking dogs. I do not agree with how these dogs are treated but please know that we see them as pests too but we do not have a heart to kill them! Hopefully, the local authorities will play a greater role in handling this properly! You will most likely see this in rural areas though, so be prepared.

PLASTIC POLLUTION

The Schools and local authorities have played - and still playing their role in educating the public on how to manage waste. Sadly, the waste management system in Sabah is still primitive. We do not have a dedicated bin for each type of waste as in developed countries. Each of us still do try to limit our plastic wastes but having an overall environmentally-friended mentality is still a long way for the overall population.

Unfortunately, this also means that more and more pristine beaches are affected by plastic pollution. This has not only affected beaches in Sabah but around the SEA places as well. However, we do try to limit our plastic waste in the ocean.

PALM TREES

Sadly, this is one of the issues here. Please bear in mind that this is driven by the economic demand and needs of the state. There are other trees planted in Sabah such as rubber, and lots of fruit orchards as well. My hope is that more and more people will diversify their trees in the years to come. However, gazzetted forest reserves are there, and not meant to be exploited by anyone.

MT KINABALU TRIP

As the reviewer wrote, no refund will be given if its raining. YES its true for both foreigners and locals. I know a few friends who had to forfeit their trip - and funds because of the weather, which is totally out of our control. However, you will at least guaranteed a day trip to the halfway of the climb, where the lodge is. Food and accommodation is included however please request vegetarian meals in advance. It is recommended that you bring your own extra food, wrap everything in plastic bags before putting in your bag as the weather is very unpredictable! Always bring extra socks and changes.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Sabah might not be the place where you would have imagined in the tropics, where you expect to have Hawaiian, Bali like facilities. Please note that it is one of the poorest states in Malaysia (although most would argue if state is the correct term!). Along your bus trips, you will see wooden houses, poorly developed infrastructures and chaos, things might not even be as clean as you would expect to. So be prepared for this. However, for those who do not mind, Sabah can be a totally different place where you can just relax, unwind and get out from big cities!

Donguan hill, Apin-Apin, Keningau

This is a relatively new hiking place for hikers in Keningau and its surroundings. This place is named Donguan, pronounced, Dong guan - like the region name in China.

This is a private property, I haven't asked the owner how did the name came about.

The site is located next to another popular hill 'Matanoi Hill'. The track is quite challenging, you have the option to hike all the way or choose the shorter route.

There are 2 main hills, and the views from the top is pretty awesome!

Best time to hike is early morning or from 4pm to 6pm. Not advisable to hike at night.

Big bird's next, eagle probably.

Location: From Apin-Apin town, turn left, drive for about 3kms.

Admission rate:

Rm 3 - Local

Rm 5 - International.

Evening views from a paddy field in Keningau

It's been such a looong break!

Thanks to smartphones, it's getting easier to blog now.

Evening views on a paddy field can be breathtaking, just as what I observed here in Keningau.

This way is a loop, but I can feel that in 10 years time more houses will be built along the way.

Bukit Perahu, Tamparuli

Last time, I went to Bukit Perahu, which is in Tamparuli. It was a 30 min climb (by foot of course) and could be quite dangerously slippery when it's raining.

I have to say that I am quite fortunate to witness such a beautiful glorious morning view from the top of the hill. You can see the small town of Tamparuli and Tuaran from the hill and also the vast South China Sea from afar. You can go there in the morning or in the evening to view the sunset when the weather is fine.

Sungai Pegalan (Pegalan River)

You can easily get this views if you go on straight from the main road and pass through Kg. Tigot, Keningau. There's a small path leading to Pegalan river=)

Pegalan river is a source of income and livelihood for most people along its pathway. It's origin is from Tambunan , where it passes through Keningau and eventually merges with Padas river in Tenom.

Taman Bandukan

I had the opportunity to visit Taman Bandukan, at Kg. Bunsit, Bingkor Keningau last March.
At that time, Sabah was still under the drought spell, so everything was kind of dry and a bit yellowish. Nevertheless, the setting was perfect. I had a very relaxing swim in the river and there were not so many people then. Just nice for a short escapade from a hard day's work!

It was a bit autumn like here. I like the colour of the grass.

Kipandi Butterfly Park

After looking for pictures worth posting, I ended up looking at my last visit to Kipandi Butterfly Park pictures.

Here are some of the information about the park:

The Kipandi Butterfly Park is located at the Kg. Kipandi, Moyog about 36km from Kota Kinabalu city via Penampang-Tambunan road and can be easily reach from Kota Kinabalu. It’s great place to relax, in the mountain air of the Crocker Range.

The Park surrounded by the hills of the Crocker Range and lies at 700m altitude and rich in entomofauna. It’s great place to relax, in the mountain air of the Crocker Range. It’s a great place to photography these beautiful butterflies, native orchids, exotic flowering plants and the amazing insects collection especially the butterflies and beetles.

The Crocker Range is among the best insects diversity in Sabah. Many rare and endemic species of butterflies and beetles which only can found in this range, especially the family of stag beetles(Lucanidae) like Cyclommatus chewi, Odontolabis katsurai and Odontolabis schenki among the rare and localized species it known only from the mountain forests surrounding Crocker Range and endemic of Sabah.

Over 100 species of butterflies have been recorded in the park area and many butterflies come into the garden to suck nectar from many flowering shrubs, including the most rare and endemic mountains species butterflies family of Papilionidae especially Graphium procles, Graphium stratiotes and Troides andromache (Borneo Birdwing).

My personal experience about the park:

* Cool and refreshing air :)

* Many flowers and rare plants :)

* Good park assistants :)

Orchids are also available there

If you're lucky, you might be able to see and touch the caterpillars. Like this students did. * Butterfly caterpillars are different than Moth caterpillars. They are more spiky and colourful and do not cause itchiness when you touch them.

The park workers then put the caterpillar cocoons into a special hut which is covered by nets to prevent predators from devouring them. Little did I know that there are actually many animals who enjoys eating them such as birds and if I'm not mistaken the workers there also said rats! erm..correct me if I'm wrong.

The butterflies are then preserved and displayed at the exhibition room. You can also see many insects such as spiders etc. Some of the specimens are from overseas so its a very informative experience if you have the chance to visit this park.

I always think this looks fascinating..

Even if it is not covered in snow...can see the rice fields...and village houses underneath

Papar Old Town 2

Recently I went to Papar. Another town along the west coastline of Sabah.

Papar has a lot of old buildings with its characteristic blue colour.

The above is a roundabout near Kg. Langkawit (if I'm not mistaken)...In Sabah there are many places where in the middle of the roundabout the district municipal council put an "identity icon" to represent the place..as in Papar they put the traditional white Hat..I don't know what they call it in Kadazan...anyone knows??

This is the market...The old wooden market has been replaced by this..after a great fire consumed it..

Ah...this is the old wooden shop building I'm talking about..It has been there since the colonial era..a great heritage for Papar indeed..

There used to be many old shop lots but..some have been caught by fire. The remaining ones must be preserved.

I explain what I know..in the middle is pineapple "tart", kuih makmur - (White balls) the whitish is icing sugar...Cornflakes biscuit...and the rest I don't know.. But I tell you, its good!

MV Doulos In Kota Kinabalu

Last friday, I had a chance to go to MV Doulos Kota Kinabalu, for a short visit to the floating book fair..It was fun and a special experience for me. Lots of books particularly Christian books..

MV Doulos is in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah from 29th August till 21 September 2009.

Here's a brief history of the ship:(wikipedia.com)

The MV Doulos is the world's oldest active ocean-faring passenger ship. She is now owned by the German charity Gute Bücher für Alle (English: Good Books for All), and is used as a floating bookshop. The ship has previously been known as the SS Medina, the SS Roma, and the MV Franca C.

The Medina was built in 1914 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company for the Mallory Steamship Company of the United States. She was a freighter serving the Atlantic; during World War II she served with the United States Coast Guard.

The Panamanian company Naviera San Miguel SA acquired the Medina in 1948; they renamed the ship the Roma, and converted her into a passenger ship with cabins for 287 people, and dormitories for an additional 694 people.

In 1952 Naviera San Miguel resold the Roma to Linea Costa, an Italian company. At this time the SS Roma, a steamship, was converted into a motor vessel and renamed the MV Franca C. She carried passengers between Italy and Argentina. In 1959, the Franca C was adapted into a cruise liner, principally cruising the Mediterranean.

In 1977, Gute Bücher für Alle acquired the Franca C, and renamed her the Doulos (Greek for servant). In her current role, she is manned by a volunteer crew and visits sea ports world-wide.

The MV Doulos currently holds the biggest floating library in the world. Normally there is somewhere around 3000 to 5000 books on the shelf and half a million in the hold.

She is currently doing her last world tour and was planned to be de-commissioned in 2010 when the SOLAS regulations are due to be introduced.

Durian

Haha, this is Durian.

Known for it sweet-smelling odour (some called it sweet-sickly smell). It is undeniably the most popular fruit in Malaysia.

It has a white-yellowish tender flesh and taste tart to sweet depending on its species, enwrapped in its thorny thick "skin"

Majority of people love to eat durian. Some like it Fresh or even Pickled (tempoyak).

One sure thing is that, you can't bring it to hotel or inside the aeroplane...(sigh!)

But, frankly speaking..I'm not a real fan of durian..:) :)

Queen Elizabeth Hospital

Sorry guys, haven't updated for months.

I've pored upon my photos, and found that this might interest you

" Queen Elizabeth General Hospital, located along Jalan Penampang is the largest public hospital in Sabah. Built in 1957, it is the most important healthcare centre in the city and one of only three general hospital in Sabah." Stated in wikipedia.com

But as you can see the hospital now is being renovated (if not demolished) due to structural damage. It is indeed a Historical Hospital because it was built even before the Independence of Sabah and the formation of Malaysia.

Tuaran Crocodile Park - Part 2

BAMBOO HOUSE

the park also built a very decent bamboo house and with a big hall for the dance show.

The interior reminds me of a very traditional-style bamboo house. Which is prevalent in interior sabah tens of year ago. (not very long though).This must be preserved as this is one of the proud heritage of Sabahan.

Its very cool and spacious and comfortable.Even without TV, PC, Telephone,etc etc.

The outer verandah of the house (is it the right word). My English has gone from bad to worse lately.

The park also gave a traditional dance show. Sadly only 2 dancers turn out. Where are the rest?

ANIMALS ON DISPLAY

In this category I will put two types of animals. DEAD and ALIVE.

I start from the dead ones.

This is a preserved buffalo. (is it). I forgot its name.

Perhaps this is a buffalo also.

A horse.

A goat.

And this is the picture of some very beautiful chinese clay-works (I dont know whether to call it porcelain or jars, or whether is even the right word to write).

All these are underneath the big beautiful bamboo+wooden made Hall.

LIVING ANIMALS

The crocs a.k.a the boss. There are many crocs displayed in cages. Got smaller ones and big ones. I think I must have been pretty much disgusted that I only took 1 picture of a large croc relaxing under the tropical sun.

Small tortoises. The ones that pretty much must have defeated the Hare.

Ostriches.

Deer.

And I don't know the name of this one. I know that its under the "deer" family also.

LandScapes

This is among the landscapes that I managed to snap on that day.

A very tropical one.

Garden-style arrangement.

Greenish and smelly waters where the crocs thrives.

And this one too.

I really encourage all of you to visit this place.Its hot but its very good, plus, its still developing and I'm sure many more interesting stuffs will be around soon.

Forgot to tell, there's also a croc-leather handicraft sold at the main entrance of the park. The goods ranges from Croc's penis, gallbladder, egg, oil which cost a few hundred and some lady handbags made with croc's leather which costs a fortune. After all, a tiny handbag that I saw is sold at RM4K a piece. Isn't that a fortune?

Tuaran still has a lot of things to explore. The Beaches (Pantai Dalit), The Resorts (Rasa Ria Resort), and The Seafood restaurants scattered along. So make sure you'll visit Tuaran if u go to Sabah.

Tuaran Crocodile Park

At last, I managed to find some time to visit another place in Sabah

Which is the Tuaran Crocodile Park or "Taman Buaya". Went there with a group of friends.

As you can see the Admission for Malaysian is RM15.00, for Non-Malaysian its extra RM5.(roughly about USD4.00)

This crocodile was killed by some villagers coz it attacked one of the villagers. Luckily it was preserved for others to know about its story.

And this one also. (I'd be dead if its alive). To my surprise the park also displays some exotic animals for visitors to see.

two pools of fishes..this one is kinda disgusting..where u can buy the food for RM1 and feed them. They're Starving!

CROCODILE SHOW

At 11.00am and 3.00pm Daily, The park will organize a crocodile show.

This is a preparation before beginning the show. The "stuntmen" were splashing some water on the hot floor before beginning the show.The announcer said this is to make the crocodile "comfortable" of which I have a doubt about it.

Here, they are persuading the crocodile to "cooperate" with the show. They use a long bamboo stick to guide the croc.

This is the How-to-tie-a-Croc's-mouth demonstration done by a young lady.

And this is the stunt where the guy are persuading the crocs so that it wont bite him when he kiss it.

There you are - an essentially nonsense crocodile kiss. A friend bet me RM5 if the guy would put his head inside the mouth. Which of course was not performed.

Besides this there are also several shows such as "dancing with the croc" which lasted barely 3 seconds, and "brushing the croc's teeth" demo.

Quite a nonsense but still a Daring show. Mind you, I still can't imagine being inside the large cage with several hungry crocs!

It was raining season again. Most evenings are filled with thunder and downpour. I browsed over my past collection and thought that this one will brighten someone's spirit.

Yes, this is a picture of a sunflower grown in Sabah. Wishing days will be more filled with sunshine so that I will get chance to travel more :)
