New airport to facilitate travel, open up Lawas

LAWAS: Travel for folk in Lawas and southern Sabah would be a breeze when the proposed new Lawas airport is completed under the second rolling of the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP)

Deputy Minister of Transport Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri said the present transportation and communication woes would be addressed by the building of the airport by the federal government under the mid-term review of 10MP, which has been regarded as an essential project.

The new airport would also open up communication links around Lawas, including the Ba Kelalan and Bario highlands apart from neighbouring Sabah, he said during his working visit here yesterday.“The construction of the new airport is a necessity and not a luxury for this region,” he said, adding that it would also boost the economic growth of the district and southern districts of Sabah.

The current fleet of four Twin Otter aircrafts is also slated to be replaced with more modern aircrafts that meet the requirements of rural Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) airstrips under the Rural Air Service (RAS) for Sabah and Sarawak.These reliable aircrafts currently operated by MasWings are already 28 years-old.Rahim said the ministry was informed by Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan of the problem of frequent flooding at Lawas airport during rainy spells which caused much inconvenience to the people.

The increase in passenger traffic would also bring a brighter prospect for the district’s tourism industry as it is currently constricted by limited air travel connectivity.The deputy minister also visited the proposed site of the new airport which has been approved by the state government, and gave the thumbs up for its strategic location in the economic development triangle of Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei.He, however, declined to give the cost apart from saying that the emphasis would be on the runway which is more costly compared to terminal building.

The present Lawas airport was built in 1961, with a runway of 683 metres long and 18 metres wide at a bend of the Lawas river, making it impossible to lengthen it and vulnerable to flood.

It recorded 54,210 passengers last year, compared to 48,744 and 45,728 in 2009 and 2008 respectively. There are currently 30 flights weekly in Lawas-Miri sector, apart from Lawas-Ba Kelalan (six) and Lawas-Kota Kinabalu (twice).With an annual passenger growth rate of five per cent, volume is projected to reach 65,728 by 2014, but Malaysia Airport Berhad believes it can be higher with the new airport that caters for bigger aircrafts and due to the economic growth in the district.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahim and his entourage also visited the Road Transport Department office in Lawas which is facing congestion.Also present were Ba Kelalan assemblyman Nelson Balang Rining, Datuk Abdul Nasir Abdul Razak (MAHB), RTD Sarawak director Mohd Shafiq Anas Abdullah, Lawas district officer Mohd Supaih Hamdan, heads of department and community leaders.

Malaysia Airlines customers can now buy the “Discover Malaysia Pass” from as low as US$99 (RM302) for economy class and US$199 (RM608) for business class to explore Malaysia at more affordable prices.The pre-paid ticket voucher, which can be bought from now until June 30, can be exchanged for a ticket that is valid for six months to enable travel to four sectors within Malaysia.“This is a good way for tourists to visit more places in Malaysia while keeping in line with our efforts to help showcase the country as an exciting tourist destination in Asia,” MAS executive vice-president for sales and marketing Datuk Bernard Francis said in a statement.

To be eligible to purchase the pass, customers must have travelled on an international ticket purchased from MAS which is within a one-month travel validity.On economy class, those travelling within peninsular Malaysia and within Sabah and Sarawak will only have to pay US$99 (RM302) for the pass.Those travelling from the peninsula to Sabah and Sarawak will only have to pay US$199 (RM608).

For business class customers, the deal is US$499 for travels between peninsular and east Malaysia, and US$199 for travel within peninsular and within east Malaysia.All prices are for all four sectors and are inclusive of tax and fuel surcharge.The vouchers can be purchased from any MAS ticketing office or call centre.They can then be exchanged for a ticket at MAS ticketing offices within 60 days

Sabah Tea Garden which started off as an organic tea plantation in the district of Ranau, Sabah has now expanded into a popular holiday destination as well in the state both for local and foreign tourists.Located in one the oldest rainforests in the world, with the picturesque Mt Kinabalu, Malaysia's first World Heritage Site, for its background, Sabah Tea Garden is known for its 100 per cent organic tea without the use of any chemicals. Today, managed by Sabah Tea Sdn Bhd's Ipoh based unit, Yee Lee Corporation Bhd, Sabah Tea Garden has grown into an ideal place for nature lovers and those wanting to relax away from the busy city life, offering various holiday stay and tour packages customised for its visitors.

The "tea garden" encompasses an area measuring 6,200 acres and is 2,272 ft from sea level. From the total area, only 1,200 acres are used for the cultivation of tea and tourism activities while the rest remains a tropical forest rich with flora and fauna. Among the attractive tour and holiday packages that Sabah Tea Garden offers are a two-day one night stay, a three-day two nights package as well as day trips, team building programmes and company meetings package and rainforest camping. For those taking the overnight stays, there are several types of accommodation facilities they can choose from at the resort including longhouses, cottages and camp sites.

The company had also invested RM1 million to build several new, English-style cottages fully equipped with basic facilities like bed, sofa as well as modern facilities like LCD TV. The rate for the cottage stay is RM240 per night. There are two longhouses designed along the features of a Rungus longhouse, a type of longhouse in which the Rungus, one of Sabah's ethnic Bumiputera groups, live in.

The floors and walls of the longhouse are built from bamboo and woodskin such as kayu bakau, belian and nibong. The longhouse is divided into several rooms with each room costing RM120 for a night stay. Ismail said the longhouses were also built with the idea of giving the tourists a taste of the local culture and the opportunity to feel the experience of living in a longhouse.

Each of the rooms in the longhouse come with a bed and mosquito net with the toilets and bathrooms separately set nearby the longhouse. There are also other amenities and facilities including halls for meetings, and other functions, as well as restaurants, souvenir shops and broadband wifi facility to provide Internet connection for guests.

"Many of the foreign tourists opt for the longhouse as they want to feel for themselves the local culture and experience living like the locals while the domestic tourists mostly go for the cottages. "We also get booked by many large corporations, government agencies, universities, and schools that want to hold their meetings, family day and other team activities here," Ismail said. Among the activities offered by Sabah Tea Garden to tourists are river trekking, jungle trekking, batik painting, fish massage, visits to the tea plantations and factories as well as culture shows upon request.

On the production of its Sabah Tea, Ismail said Sabah Tea Garden was the sole producer of organic tea in Borneo and around the world, the company exported 15 per cent of its production to countries like Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Britain and Singapore with the rest of them for the domestic markets.

The exports contribute about 10 per cent to the company's income, Ismail said. The trip to Sabah Tea Garden from Kota Kinabalu meanwhile takes about a two-and-and-a-half-hour drive. For foreign tourists wishing to visit the state, travel has now become much easier as there are many airline companies offering their services to the state with the latest service coming from the community airline, Firefly, a unit of Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS).

The service is also part of the state government's efforts to increase the number of tourists to the state and further develop its tourism industry. Their presence will drive other airlines to offer the most competitive fares.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman when making the comment, said the increase in the number of daily flights between the nation’s capital and the state capital have made it easier for travellers to visit Sabah.

“Sabah has worked extremely hard to promote itself as a destination and to offer the best of what the island of Borneo has. There was a time when we were unable to expand our tourism sector as rapidly as we would have liked to. This was certainly attributable to the lack of flights between KL and KK.

“Air travel is after all, the only way for tourists to get to East Malaysia,” he said in his speech read by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun during the welcoming ceremony of the inaugural Firefly flight to the state capital from Kuala Lumpur at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport near here yesterday.He said the state government’s focus on expanding the tourism sector along with the aviation industry is included under the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) plan as well as the ‘Halatuju’ or development agenda.

“We are committed to focusing our efforts to strengthen the tourism sector, as it has been identified as a growth sector of our economy.

“However, we will continue to adhere to the principles of sustainable development as we expand our tourism sector. The government is also consistently providing basic infrastructure to support the growth of the sector and testimony to this is the expansion of KKIA,” he said.

He said the launching of Firefly’s service to the state capital would certainly help fulfill the government’s agenda to stimulate economic growth through the tourism sector.Musa added that capitalising on existing infrastructure and with Firefly’s venturing into jet propelled aircraft, the airline will be able to offer reliable connecting flights to East Malaysia for travellers arriving in the country using MAS flights.

“It is our hope that Firefly will continue to serve specialised markets, meeting the needs of local and international passengers who seek good connectivity and more importantly, affordable air transport.“We look forward to Firefly expanding its routes to towns like Sandakan and Tawau, and other destinations in the region to better serve travellers,” he said.

Present during the launch were Malaysia Airlines (MAS) chairman Tan Sri Dr Munir Majid and Firefly managing director Datuk Eddy Leong.

The airlines’ Boeing 737-800 landed at KKIA at 4.10pm. The inaugural flight from KL to KK however actually departed on Jan 15, marking the airlines’ first docking into Terminal 1 of KKIA.It celebrated its entrance into Sabah yesterday with an additional third daily flight between KL and KK with fares priced at the lowest.

13 youngsters from Denmark seek adventure in Sabah
