Last month leaders of the SDA church in the South Pacific Division (SPD) met again in Australia with pastors from Samoa and Samoan pastors representing Samoan churches in New Zealand and Australia. The bible conference discussed the impasse in Samoa which is detrimental to a fundamental doctrine of the SDA church where there are now two seventh-day Sabbaths, some worshipping on Saturday and the majority worshipping on Sunday.

An outcome of the meeting is the matter to be referred to the Biblical Research Committee of the South Pacific Division for further research.

But in Samoa, the local church administration has instructed the law office of Schuster-Betham-Annandale to write to the Leauva’a-uta SDA members who are worshipping on Saturday to refrain from using the church facility there. The letter dated 6th February warns that failure to comply within 7 days will result in the matter been taken to the High Court for an order regarding ownership, demolition and removal by the church of assets.

Leauvaa-uta Sabbath keepers in front of their church building.

The letter from the lawyer however states that the church does not dispute the land belongs to the title Sala (held by Fonoti Peteli). This is further confirmed in a letter from the Register of the Lands and Titles Court stating the ownership of the land known as Laumasa is with Sala Fonoti Peteli and is not being disputed. The Register however goes further advising the parties involved to seek legal advice from lawyers in regards to dividing of church assets.

The SDA Sabbath dilemma in Samoa today centers around which day is the seventh-day of the week after the IDL change in 2011, the second time Samoa has changed its location to the IDL. Is it Saturday or Sunday?

Seventh-day Adventists keep the Sabbath on the seventh day of the week which is Saturday like everywhere else in the world. Most Christian churches in Samoa however also call Sunday the Sabbath but for a different reason – to commemorate the day of Jesus’ resurrection which falls on Sunday, the first day of the week.

On the TVNZ program Tagata Pasefika last year, President of the SDA church in Samoa, Pastor Uili Solofa stated that “now in Samoa, the seventh-day falls on Sunday.” The same argument was published in the Samoa Observer 1st July issue saying, “The practical result in terms of Sabbath keeping is that Sunday not Saturday has become the seventh day of the week.”

In a document dated 29th December 2011, Pastor Uili Solofa wrote,

“The majority of church leaders, worshippers and villages (in Samoa) are not saying they are happy that Seventh-day Adventists are keeping Sunday, instead what they are saying is that – we are going to keep the Sabbath of the Seventh-day Adventist church; praise God!”

In a separate correspondence, Pastor Uili Solofa also wrote, “You have to know that all the other Christian religions in Samoa have publicly testified that they have moved to keep the seventh–day Sabbath of the Bible.”

Catholic Chancellor Ono does not appear to share that view. Asked about casinos opening on Sunday, Father Ioane says that personally, he had no problems with it. “For Catholics or any Christian for that matter, Sunday is a day of rest, a day of giving thanks and praise to the Lord. It is also a day of joy and celebration because for the Catholic Church, Sunday is the day of resurrection of Jesus.” (Samoa Observer, March 12, 2013)

Such statements by SDA leaders in Samoa and the Pacific that Sunday is the “seventh-day” in Samoa today appear to contradict the reason Christian churches worship on Sunday, the first day of the week, to commemorate the day of Jesus’ resurrection.

I find this mind-boggling: A church authority sends a letter to one of its constituent member churches warning "that failure to comply within 7 days will result in the matter been taken to the High Court for an order regarding ownership, demolition and removal by the church of assets" -- especially when the order concerns meeting on the seventh-day Sabbath in a church for worship.

I'm glad to see that this threat has not yet been carried out. But I wonder what kind of power threatens demolition of a church building if worshippers will not stop worshipping in it?

Is this the voice of the dragon or the Lamb?

Would any church authority following in the footsteps of Christ ever threaten to demolish a church standing on private property because the worshippers "stubbornly refuse" to bow to its authority?

Or is this the voice of the dragon?

Would Christ approve of uttering such a threat even against Muslims worshipping in a former Adventist church?

Is this not the use of force to control conscience? Is that ever justified, according to Bible principles?

On a practical basis, I wonder if Samoan law would allow such damage to private property -- for surely the demolition of a building results in considerable damage. I suppose clean-up and landscaping after demolition would repair the damage. But I imagine it would require a quite an outlay of capital to accomplish demolition, clean-up and landscaping -- just to "punish" fellow believers who do not agree that the Samoan government "renamed the days of the week."

Perhaps some Samoan brothers and sisters can shed light on this?

							Malo Inge,

The situation today in Samoa where SDAs are worshipping on two Sabbaths is already a huge embarrassment and something people are openly joking about.

Church asset disputes:
The actions by the STM to engage a lawyer to instruct the Leauva’a-uta sabbathkeepers to refrain from using the church or else go to court to divide up church assets with the option of demolishing the church is a bigger embarrassment to the SDA church.

Going to court will only open up all the cans of worms for the world to see; the media will have a field day. With Samoans around the world, the media will be circulating far and wide.

If the STM is successful and the Leauva’a-uta sabbathkeepers decides to take the church down and split the building materials. How does that look for the SDA church when Catholic, EFKS, Methodist, LDS, AOG and more are popping up everywhere. Another bigger story for the media. By the way most of these denominations own TV and radio stations .............

Should sabbathkeepers be disfellowshipped:
Many of the families on whose lands the churches stand have generally contributed the lion's share to the building of the churches. Thus they should justifiably retain the "lion's share" of the assets, should they not?” It's time to go to court .....

So what’s stopping sabbathkeepers from making a claim on all SDA church buildings that they contributed financially to? This will translate to more court cases! More embarrassing media coverage and more damage to the SDA church in Samoa.

Alofa atu,

Pa’u ****

I want to make some comments regarding the letter by the Samoan Mission. The church will only be successful if the legal title to the land and property is held with the church. If it is held by someone else, the church should simply move on. In the Pacific with the exception of few countries like PNG, Solomon Islands and Fiji, the legal title to most or all properties of the church is in an entity called ACA (Australasian Conference Association). If the legal title to the church that is debated on this page is with ACA, the local congregation will not win the case in court.

From a person point of view, if the Samoa Mission has written a letter to the local church, they will not do this without knowing the legal title to the church. They would have seek clarification from SPD regarding the title to the property. What the Mission is doing is to make it clear that either you are with the Seventh Day Adventist Church or not. There is nothing wrong with the Mission action. Any denomination nowaday will defend its right. The local congregation of this church is causing problems to the church. They are using the church name which is a registered name in Samoa for their own benefit. This is like trading in business using another company's name. The law prohibit this behaviour. If the local congregation persist in their belief, they should register their own business name and operate under it.

Thanks.

Tukia.

Jesus said by the "fruit" we can know if something or someone is true to God. The decision to keep Sunday in Samoa has born fruit that has turned a church-planting denomination into a church-demolishing denomination. Hopefully this decision will be reversed before the demolition starts! We need to pray . . .

							Talofa Tukia

You noted “The church [Samoa Mission] will only be successful if the legal title to the land and property is held [by] the church. If it is held by someone else, the church should simply move on”. By letter dated 04/04/2013 (meant to be March 4, 2013), Samoa’s Ministry of Justice and Court Administration confirmed to the disputing parties that the land in issue is owned by Chief Salā Fonoti Peteli P. For your further information, the property is neither licensed nor leased to the Samoa Mission either. Therefore, the Samoa Mission does not have legal title or occupational rights to the property, and as you stated, should move on.

As you would no doubt be well aware, the name Seventh-day Adventist is the global name for the church - not just in Samoa. The Saturday Sabbath-keepers in Samoa are members of the Samoa, American Samoa Tokelau Mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Accordingly, the Saturday Sabbath-keepers in Samoa are locally and globally Seventh-day Adventists. Therefore, they have the legitimate and lawful right to be called Seventh-day Adventists and to use the church’s official name.

By the way, these church members are observing Sabbath on the 7th day of the week (which falls on Saturday) in obedience to God and in compliance with the global church’s position stated by General Conference in Session as recorded in the Church Manual and the church’s Fundamental Beliefs. The General Conference in Session as you would be aware, is the highest authority of the worldwide Seventh-day Adventist Church

							Hi Tukia,
You wrote:
What the Mission is doing is to make it clear that either you are with the Seventh Day Adventist Church or not. There is nothing wrong with the Mission action.

What the mission is doing is making it clear that you either worship on sunday or we will spend mission tithes and offerings on legal fees in order to destroy your church, (because the Saturday Sabbath keepers are blamed for the unease that is growing among churches in their continued sunday worship in these end times) The apostacy of convenience and compromise will never be comfortable, because the Spirit of God will keep prompting against it.
We are plainly told in 1 Corinthians 6 not to sue the brethren, not to present court cases in front of unbelievers. When will a sleeping church mission wake up and realise that they are fighting God and HIS eternal truth in their human nature.

They are using the church name which is a registered name in Samoa for their own benefit. This is like trading in business using another company’s name. The law prohibit this behaviour. Has the church become a business? What is it trading in? Demolition materials or souls for God's eternal kingdom?

We read the old testament and the stories of the Israelites -- time and time and time again over and over, God's chosen people turn their backs on God. Reading we wonder at their stupidity. (How could they live through all the miracles? How could the leaders lead them into famine and war?) All they had to do was love and worship the only true God of the universe and they would live in HIS blessings. But, no, they wanted to be like the other nations, they put worldly priorities ahead of their relationship with God.

The exact same attitudes and priorities override Gods blessings today, business and sport can be embraced ahead of God on HIS Sabbath day, and a people follow like sheep because the church has endorsed it. The Israelites persecuted and killed the prophets because they made them feel uncomfortable in their sins. How will the sunday worshipping Seventh-day Adventists stand when sunday laws are introduced? At the close of probation how many will change their whole life styles to honour and worship on God's sign between HIM and HIS remnant people? Big decisions are ahead for a lot of people here in the islands,

I truly agree with all the posts above. I cannot even begin to image how a leader who is supposed to represent our churches by standing for the TRUTH and nothing else but the TRUTH, can openly and embarrassingly open his mouth and utter disturbing words quoted as “The majority of church leaders, worshippers and villages (in Samoa) are not saying they are happy that Seventh-day Adventists are keeping Sunday, instead what they are saying is that – we are going to keep the Sabbath of the Seventh-day Adventist church; praise God!” The biblical cycle has never changed despite man playing around with dates.

Many are called but a few are chosen. Just because the majority have decided to bow down to the idle with the blessing of the leader(s) does not mean that they are right before the eyes of God. Daniel 7: 25 says “And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time".

When times and laws are changed, it is the very time when Christian Sabbath keepers should stand firm and hold on to THE TRUTH and not be bullied into keeping the wrong Sabbath which is not according to God’s weekly cycle.

With regards to the building being demolished, I surely think its a step gone too far. This just shows you that the bible is true when it says ” many are called but a few are chosen” - Out of that big church, only a handful faithful people are willing to stand for the truth while the majority blindly follow an endorsement by the leaders.

It’s not the leaders who will get you a place in heaven. Salvation is personal and I pray that the leaders will re-think and enquire from God alone to reveal to them the truth in order for them to go back and tell the people the truth.

Let them take the building or even destroy it but one thing they should know is that this is The Church of God – not the leaders or the other members who are now in error about the TRUE Sabbath day. The fact is one day they will harvest the fruits of retribution for no man can trample upon His church.

God is seeking TRUE Christians, who are followers of God's Word.

Yes, Tukia, this also happened a long time ago, when the "church" was the nation of Israel. Another leader, Ahab by name, made it clear that another dissident, called Elijah the Tishbite, was making trouble for the church. Hmm...

							Hi Lance,

How do you resolve this issue if the local church in Samoa is so determined in there minds and hearts to oppose the decision made by the controlling body of the church. There is no other way but to separate and the matter may have to be resolved in a court of law if it has to.

You may disagree but the church is run and operate like any other organisation. The SDA Church is run and operated under certain regulations, policies and principles. For your information, the church in Australia (and will happen in the islands) have been incorporated as a company and its conduct is governed by the companies ACT of Australia. The church may not be selling a physical product but it is selling a service to its members.

The decision made by the SPD was not done without consultation. Before the actual event happened, certain officers of the SPD went to Samoa to discuss the issue with the administrators of the church in Samoa. The decision was also supported by the General Conference. It was a careful and thoughtful decision based on the teaching of the bible to keep the 7th day of the week as the sabbath day rather than the name of the day as most of you are holding on to.

If the church has to go to court to resolve this issue so what. The advice in the book of Corinthians can only work if the opposing group is willing to co-operate. From the information I read on this site the legal title to the local church in Samoa is not with the church and therefore, the church should move on because they will not win. However, if the SDA church in Samoa decide to disconnect itself from this local church base on legal matters, the local congregation cannot continue to use the name Seventh Day Adventist. They will have to use a different name to operate.

My suggestion, if the members of this church determined not to support the decision made by SPD, they should join another denomination or form their own church.

							Hi R G White,

I think you are using the story of Ahab out of context here. There is nothing wrong with the decision made by SPD. Basically, your sabbath is based on the name of the day rather than the 7th day of the week.

In an article regarding casinos in Samoa in the Samoa Observer Online, March 12, 2013, Father Ioane Ono, Chancellor of the Catholic Church in Samoa, confirmed that in Samoa Sunday is currently recognized as the day of the resurrection, that is the first day of the week. This is contrary to claims by representatives of the Seventh-day Adventist Church who have said that Sunday is now the seventh-day Sabbath, which would make it the day before the resurrection.

Asked about casinos opening on Sunday, Father Ioane says that personally, he had no problems with it. He says the church on Sunday is a day of “celebration.”

“For Catholics or any Christian for that matter, Sunday is a day of rest, a day of giving thanks and praise to the Lord.It is also a day of joy and celebration because for the Catholic Church, Sunday is the day of resurrection of Jesus.” (Samoa Observer, March 12, 2013)

According to a news item published on EventPolynesia.com, August 15, 2013, Samoa-Tokelau Seventh-day Adventist Mission President Uili Solofa has written that other churches are now keep the seventh-day Sabbath, along with Seventh-day Adventists:

In a written statement, Pastor Uili Solofa wrote, “The majority of church leaders, worshippers and villages (in Samoa) are not saying they are happy that Seventh-day Adventists are keeping Sunday, instead what they are saying is that – we are going to keep the Sabbath of the Seventh-day Adventist church; praise God!” (EventPolynesia.com, August 15, 2013)

Chancellor Ono does not appear to share that view.

While most people seem to believe that the International Date Line was created by the 1884 Meridian Conference, and that it has something to do with the 180-degree meridian, history seems to indicate that there is no truth in either of these assumptions. Rather, it appears that our IDL is merely the latest development of an ancient day line.

What is the nature of this day line, and what is its source?

I believe that we must first understand the nature of the 7th-day Sabbath. Jesus told us that “the Sabbath was made for man.” He did not say the Sabbath was made for the earth, the rocks, or the trees. From this we can see that, where there are no people, there is no Sabbath. Where human habitations exist, however, there must be a Sabbath, and by extension, a 7-day week.

Now, let’s go back to the creation of man.

God placed us on a round world and commanded us to keep the 7th day of every week holy. (See Genesis 1:1-2:3 NKJV.) This implies the existence of a place on the revolving earth where one day changes to another — what we call a “day line.” But, where was it? With no people, and thus no Sabbath or weekly cycle, anywhere on the globe except in the Garden of Eden, there would have been nothing but the Garden to define the location of the day line. So, depending on the concept one prefers, the day line was at some undefined longitude not passing through the Garden, or it was exceedingly broad, encompassing all other longitudes. Our choice between these two descriptions probably doesn’t matter much, just so we understand there must have been a place for one day to end and another to begin, a “day line.”

After Creation, how did the day line develop?

Changes in the bounds of human habitations, prior to the flood, along with any corresponding developments in the day line, would not affect us today, as the survival of just one family returned the day line to much the same state as at Creation.

In the events connected with the Tower of Babel, we see that God deliberately scattered the human race over the face of the entire globe. [See Genesis 11:8-9 (NKJV).] Part of the earth would have been inhabited by those migrating westward from Babel, and other parts by those migrating eastward. Had all of those migrants kept track of the weekly cycle and observed the true Sabbath, and had they immediately met up on the other side of the world, they would have found that their respective day counts were off by one day! A day line would have been immediately apparent, passing between the habitations of the easterly migrants and the homes of the westerly migrants.

The Nature of the Day Line

All migrants keeping the Sabbath, and the farthest migrants meeting soon after their dispersion from Babel, represent a hypothetical scenario. However, this does serve to illustrate the nature of the day line. It is not something drawn on a map by force of international agreement, and then imposed on every society on earth. It is not based on any theory of what might be ideal. Rather, it is something which develops naturally, and is defined by the question of which societies are following the easterly migrant week, and which are following the westerly migrant week. This is the true nature of today’s “International Date Line” or IDL, and it explains why the IDL does not necessarily follow a straight line. We should be thankful that one can at least chart the reality by drawing just one line on a map!

What do we know about the history of the day line/IDL?

The actual history of the day line, from the flood until relatively modern times, can only be known as well as those early migration patterns. Thus our review of the day line must include a certain risk of inaccuracy. That said, to the best of our knowledge, the westerly migrants initially settled only about as far as the Atlantic. The Pacific islands, and even the Americas, appear to have been settled by easterly migrants. (See “Early Human Migration Map.“)

Because much of the world seemed to have abandoned the 7-day week, I believe it would be fair to define the early day line by those migration patterns, and by the weekly cycle which ought to have been remembered in any given place. From this, the day line would seem to have been in the vicinity of the Atlantic Ocean for a very long time.

How did the day line get from the Atlantic to the Pacific?

I believe that this massive shift was largely an unconscious one. The Mayans, as advanced as their civilization appears to have been, had no 7-day cycle in their calendar. (See ”The Mayan Calendar.”) If this is at all representative of other cultures in the Americas, the mass migration of Europeans across the Atlantic, following the early explorers, would probably have allowed the westerly migrant week to take over the “New World” without creating any awareness that a day line shift was even taking place.

What area was affected by this massive, unconscious day line shift?

There are many gaps in my knowledge. However, is seems clear that Alaska, the Cook Islands, Tahiti and the Leeward Islands were initially excluded, while such places as Hawaii, and even the Philippines, were included in the effect. Neither Tonga nor Samoa was a part of this shift. They remained on the easterly migrant week, in accordance with the way they had first been settled.

What do we know about intentional day line shifts?

Between 1840 and 1867, Alaska, Tahiti, and the Leeward Islands all experienced a known and deliberate day line shift, moving to the westerly migrant week by means of a one-off 8-day week. The Philippines adjusted in the opposite direction, dropping Tuesday, December 31, 1844 and moving back to the easterly migrant week.

Lastly, Samoa (including present-day American Samoa) followed Tahiti in adopting the westerly migrant week – by repeating Monday, July 4, 1892.

The Existing Day Line, as of 1895

Now, with some degree of confidence, we are prepared to say just where the existing day line was in 1895, when our first Adventist missionaries arrived in Tonga. It passed between Alaska and Siberia, staying to the west of Hawaii and to the east of Fiji. Interestingly, one would have had to draw the line to the west of Samoa, double it back northward between what is now American Samoa and the Cook Islands, and then bring it back down to the east of the Cook Islands. That might have been rather interesting! The day line would have stayed west of Tahiti, but east of Tonga and New Zealand. That’s where the existing day line was in 1895. Shortly afterward, in 1899, the day line (already known as the International Date Line?) was shifted to the west of the Cook Islands, doubtless making it much easier to draw on a map.

More Recent Developments and the SDA Problem

In more recent times, we have seen the IDL shifted to the east of Kiribati, Wallis/Futuna, and Samoa/Tokelau. With all of the day line shifts of history, Tonga has not been involved in any way, yet it was in Tonga where “Adventist” Sunday observance was first revived. It seems that this error was largely the result of popular misconceptions concerning the day line.

Thank you, Ronald, for your research on this topic. I've done some reading of my own that confirms your findings that the "date line" (the place where one day changes to another) has never been along any particular meridian, not even the 180th, but has always been related to the people who lived in areas of the world affected by it.

Since the local people have always chosen how to align themselves to the date line, it is perfectly legitimate for them to continue to do so. And that means that the independent nation of Samoa had every right to align itself to the west of the IDL. And that means that Saturday is just as much the seventh day of the week now as it was before the re-alignment.

Using the 180th Meridian as the date line is, in effect, establishing a private date line for whatever organization chooses to do this. Relative to recent discussions on this site, it would seem that the South Pacific Division of Seventh-day Adventists appears to have chosen a private date line for the purpose of Sabbath keeping in certain Pacific Islands. That seems eerily similar to the promotion of the "Eden Day Line Theory" at the beginning of the twentieth Century. It also resulted in part of the world keeping Sunday as the seventh-day Sabbath. Our pioneers deemed this to be a "false issue" and Ellen White denounced this theory strongly.

A private date line for Sabbath keeping purposes can be very convenient, of course. The North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists could simply decide that, for Sabbath-keeping purposes, the date line really belongs in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. After all, that's likely where it was some time after the Flood, due to the migration patterns historians have determined. Just think, all of us in North and South America could then join Samoan Seventh-day Adventist in keeping Sunday as the seventh day! How convenient! No more "Sabbath problems." No more having to tell potential employers that we cannot work from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. And no more being fired from well-paying jobs for refusing to work on Saturdays.

But isn't there something just a little wrong with a private date line for Sabbath-keeping purposes?

							Dear Inge,

I agree with you that there is something very wrong with choosing our own private day line, as it is tantamount to choosing our own "Sabbath," like the Roman church has done. Have we, or our church leaders, any power at all to choose something special for ourselves, thus changing God's times and law?

Because our North American governments have chosen the westerly migrant week, I do not believe that the NAD is in such a "convenient" position as to seek to avail itself of the "Sunday option" by choosing a private day line. The church seems to find itself in that position largely in those societies where the easterly migrant week is officially followed. If I understand correctly, the scenario which you have suggested -- saying the day line ought to be in the Atlantic -- would actually result in Friday observance in the Americas. Perhaps this illustrates the reason why Satan seems always to be trying to persuade us to choose a private day line west of the actual day line (i.e. west of the IDL), but not so far west that we end up seeing it as east of the IDL instead! To get a Sunday "sabbath," you might have used Australia as an example, along with the theoretical Armenian day line.

This, of course, takes absolutely nothing away from your point. The Sabbath was made for man, not for anyone's theory, not for anyone's personal tastes or preferences, and not for the whims of any or all of our church leaders and administrators.

Can governments affect our Sabbath observance at a "whim?" I believe not. When a government chooses to shift the day line, everything in the entire society is affected equally, just like the whole world moves together when it turns on its axis. Does "up" become down, at any point on the equator, after a 12-hour, 180-degree rotation of the earth? Neither can Sunday become the 7th day of the week, in a particular country, just because its government shifts the day line. Our mistake is the same either way: We are trying to make something "absolute" in a way in which it was never intended to be absolute.

"God made His Sabbath for a round world." (See "The Sabbath Made for a Round World.")

This means that God must have intended for us to have an occasional 6-day or 8-day week, under the right circumstances. When we travel across the day line, accepting such a one-off week, this is not a violation of the Sabbath commandment. Neither is it a violation to accept such a week when the day line is shifted by the legitimate authorities across the area where we live. If we try to force things, like the Pharisees or their successors might do, by mechanically counting seven days, and by attempting to make the 1st day (Sunday) into the 7th day, I believe that becomes a violation of God's law.

I may be missing something here, so please pardon my oversimplified view on this topic. It seems it would make most sense to observe the seventh day of the week as the Sabbath day of scripture wherever you happen to be.

I realize that human manipulation of the IDL may have created situations that can lead to endless debate and consternation among those that like to discuss intricate details on countless technicalities. I cannot, however, imagine a scenario where God questions the faith of a believer because they didn't fully research whether they should really be worshiping on the first day or sixth day of the week because of some silly IDL.

It's not so much a matter of adapting one's belief system to the specifications of a secular system, so much as it is basically just keeping things simple. "When in Rome" if you will. If today is the seventh day of the week, then today is God's Sabbath. Simple.

							Dear Casey,

I totally agree with your sentiments, and whilst you will probably have someone say, "Oh, the issue is far more complex than you give credit!" in fact what you state about "when in Rome," is exactly the point. We all, whether Adventists or not, follow the same universal calendar so that it doesn't matter whether we are living on either side of the IDL. It remains constant and the seventh-day Sabbath is the same. Therefore this week, irrespective of the time zone, the seventh-day Sabbath will be Saturday, 15th December wherever the place is we are living or find ourselves in our travel.

Yes, and as you say, it really is as simple as this!

God's rich blessing this new week!

							Dear Casey,

Thanks for your perspective. Thankfully, as I see it, God has been kind enough to keep the matter quite simple. Thus, you are able to take a quick look at the subject, and I can delve into the details from every angle I please, and yet we both arrive at the same conclusion.

God bless!

What I find most amazing about this whole issue is just how perfect a trap Satan has set. Back in 1892 the IDL was moved and the days shifted in Samoa. In 2011 the IDL was moved back to its original position, over 100 years after it was originally tampered with. If the proponents of Sunday observance are to be taken at their word they are actually clinging to a false tradition, since the "Sabbath" they refuse to turn away from was Sunday prior to 1892, and is once again Sunday as it should have always been. The true Seventh-day Sabbath according to a pre 1892 calendar would have been Friday up until 2011 when the IDL shift moved the calendar back to its original state with the seventh day Sabbath once again falling on the Calendar Saturday.

So we now have a scenario where Satan has convinced Bible believing Christians that Sunday is the Sabbath because for over a hundred years there has been a tradition in Samoa to call what was previously the calendar day Sunday the seventh day of the week.

I fully understand the intentions of those who refuse to accept what they view as a secular attack on the Sabbath by the shifting of the IDL in 2011. What I cannot understand is how they've missed the fact that what happened in 2011 actually fixed what was done in 1892.

There is a truth that I have always found to be helpful at times like these. God's directions are straightforward and can easily be understood by even the simplest of minds. Satan's deceptions are so filled with murky grayness that even the elect can be led astray in attempting to understand and manipulate them.

God says "rest with Me on the seventh day." Satan says "but which day truly is the seventh?"

							Dear Casey,

I certainly agree that Satan has stolen a march on the Seventh-day Adventist Church, and it may help to understand how that happened.

The problem is not that the Samoa government shifted the International Date Line a couple of times. This kind of shift has taken place in quite a number of places, including the Philippines in 1844 and Alaska in 1867, yet that did not cause a problem in our Sabbath observance. That's because the effect of an IDL shift is essentially the same as when an individual crosses the date line in his or her travels. The necessary adjustment just isn't that difficult to make.

Where the problem actually began was in Tonga in the 1890s, in spite of the fact that Tonga has never made an IDL shift. Through some combination of popular misconceptions, a confusing situation, the strictest Sunday laws, and maybe other possible factors as well -- it's hard to say exactly what -- our pioneer Adventist missionaries to Tonga elected to use the American week for Sabbath observance, when Tonga was actually on the Asian week, and always had been. In effect, those Adventist missionaries started our Tonga congregations off with Sunday observance. That this was an error, I believe should be obvious enough to us by now.

Anyway, the Adventist Sunday observance in Tonga set the precedent for using the 180-degree meridian as a private day line for Adventists, rather than respecting the universally accepted IDL. Then, as more and more countries east of the 180-degree meridian have returned to the Asian week, our church administrators have switched more and more countries of Adventist congregations over to Sunday keeping, rather than correct the original error in Tonga.

Samoa is but the latest of these countries. Thankfully, Samoan Adventism has a strong minority of Saturday Sabbath keepers, able to bring the problem to the attention of the world church. I believe that God is using them to correct a long-standing Sunday-keeping tradition among Seventh-day Adventists in the islands.

You need to read Andrews paper in the Review and Herald, March 7, 1871, on where the day begins to see why we decided to keep Sabbath on Sunday in Tonga. He argues that the Sabbath is every 7th day, and God reveals in nature that the day begins at the 180 line in the middle of the Pacific. You may not be any more convinced by his arguments than I am, but it does show that it wasn't an imposition of American time on the Pacific Islands that brought about this situation. At that time the IDL was to the east of most Pacific Islands. As Andrews was at the time our leading theologian, I suspect everyone followed his lead, and thanked God that he had once again revealed to his church something hidden from others.

Thanks Kevin. There were many theories on the day line promoted during the time of EGW. John N. Andrews had suggested a Bering Strait’s Line in the pacific. Stephen Haskell proposed the keeping of both Saturday and Sunday. George Tenny recommended keeping Sabbath together with the nearest continent, which meant Australia for the pacific region. Others suggested the Eden day line heresy (see, Arthur L. White, “Dateline in Australia: Ellen G. White Estate – Questions and Answer File: 31.0.47” May 13, 1965: http://drc.whiteestate.org/files/3767.pdf (accessed January 25, 2013). Some insisted on a doctrine of the “earthly-Utopia” promoted by post-millennialism. The Millerites at first labelled the heresy "Judaizing" and "Judaism." These terms were later applied to Literalist premillennialists who “insisted that the Old Testament Messianic prophecies were to be fulfilled literally and in detail in the millennial kingdom, especially to literal Israel and Judah in the flesh” (see J. Neuffer , “The Gathering of Israel: A Historical Study of Early Writings pp. 74-76.” Retrieved from Biblical Research Institute: http://www.adventistbiblicalresearch.org). This emphasis is a form of Zionism and some have insisted that the line should begin in Israel or Jerusalem.

It is interesting to underscore that EGW in Early Writings, pp. 74-76, warned about the dangers of this heresy and focus on literal Israel. Furthermore, most of the above theories prevalent during the time of EGW has resurfaced in one way of another and used as arguments to be followed in the Samoa IDL situation. History is undoubtedly the theater room of God in Action. If we do not learn from history we will repeat the same mistakes made by those in our early history. It is critical to underscore that EGW rejected all of these theories. Her emphasis has always been on the keeping of the 7th day Sabbath rooted in God’s creative work (Gen 1-2). We can trust God and His leading in the SDA Church in the pacific. Humility in our study of the IDL issues is the key to understanding how God has led the work in the pacific. EGW says, we have nothing to fear about the future if we took the time to see how God has led His work in the past (paraphrase). Blessings.

Blessings White. The problem, as I see it is not the IDL shift in Samoa, but rather our lack of faith in God on the issue of Sabbath keeping. The problem did not begin in Tonga as you point out. If Sabbath keeping in Tonga was wrong EGW would have corrected it. People seem to forget that EGW was heading the work in the pacific when the SDA mission began both in Tonga and Samoa. EGW was in Australia from 1891-1900 and at the forefront of work in Australia. She was aware of the Tonga situation but did not bother about Sabbath keeping there. Here silence on the Tonga Sabbath situation is an indication that it was for her a non issue. Blessings.

Pressure has been exterted on the Leauvaa-uta Saturday Seventh-day Adventist Sabbath Keepers to stop worshiping in the Leauvaa-uta Seventh-day Adventist church on Saturdays.

In the week previous to November 10, 2012, a delegation from the Samoa Tokelau Mission, together with the Leauva’a-uta Sunday Sabbath keepers, called on the Saturday Sabbath keepers to persuade the latter not to use the church building on Sabbath (Saturday) for worship. The delegation suggested other alternatives, but the Saturday Sabbath keepers kept their resolve to keep the church open on Saturday, the seventh day of the week in Samoa.

Some of the influential high chiefs of Leauva’a village were approached to intervene in the impasse, to stop the church being used for worship on Sabbath (Saturday). However, when the village’s high chiefs met with high chief Salā Kuresa on whose land the church is situated, they affirmed that the Village Council of Chiefs does not interfere with internal church disputes, but will only become involved if there is a breach of the peace amongst opposing factions.

When the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Samoa started observing “sabbath” on Sunday, the first day of the week, after the IDL realignment in December 2011, Falaniko and Paepae Vaifale and family resolved to continue to honour God and observe His Sabbath on the 7th day of the week as God instructed. They noted that notwithstanding the IDL realignment, the 7th day of the week in Samoa remained unchanged and continued to be Saturday. Because the main Leauva’a-uta congregation then began having Sabbath church services on Sunday, Paepae and her family traveled a number of miles each Sabbath to worship with the Samoa Independent Seventh-day Adventist Church (SISDAC) at Vaitele since that church continued to observe Sabbath on Saturday. When Falaniko heard that the Leauvaa-uta Church was re-opening for Sabbath services a couple of weeks ago, he joined them immediately. Paepae however was cautious. But last Sabbath, November 10, she and her young son returned for the first time in eleven months to worship in her much-loved Leauvaa-uta Seventh-day Adventist Church.

In order to keep the peace, Alesana moved out to stay with one of his brothers, so that he could continue to keep God’s Sabbath. He looks forward to the time when he, his wife and children can be reunited again to worship with other members of the Leauvaa-uta church on Sabbath.

Praise God for His goodness in giving the Leauvaa-uta group a place to worship each Sabbath!

And may God abundantly bless the High Chiefs who made a wise and just decision! Let us pray that other High Chiefs may recognize the justness of their course and render similar decisions.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

There are people who are praying for your steadfast resolve to honour the TRUE Seventh day Sabbath which is the global weekly rest instituted by the Lord from Creation.

Sabbath will always be Saturday no matter where we are situated in the world.

I pray that others will gain strength and courage from your example and return, to join you in worshipping on the Seventh day (Saturday.)

Would it not be a marvellous testimony to the world wide church and indeed our brothers and sisters in other denominations to whom we have been given the 3 Angels messages to proclaim? To see a "wrong" being made "right" in humility of spirit? Is there anything too hard for the Lord?

I pray for reconciliation between brethren. There is no doubt that this must be an absolutely challenging time for all concerned.

I have been doing what I can from Canada to bring this issue to the attention of your brothers and sisters in Christ around the globe.

I have encouraged people to provide "practical" assistance to you by way of funds and of course most importantly prayer.

Please be assured that although oceans and lands physically separate us one from another, you are in the thoughts and prayers of many people.

I want to share this hymn of promise found in Psalms 23.

"My Shepherd will supply my needs". It is 104 in the SDA Hymnal.

The Lord Bless and keep you all under His watch-care.

Fran

							Dear Fran,

Thank you for the encouragement. I find it interesting that you made this statement:

"Sabbath will always be Saturday no matter where we are situated in the world."

I think you understand that we who teach this have taken quite a bit of "heat" for doing so. It has been said that we are trying to make ourselves "Saturday Adventists," rather than Seventh-day Adventists -- that we are stuck on the name itself, and don't really care which is truly the 7th day of the week. Of course, nothing could be farther from the truth!

Have you ever heard of the "black and white fallacy" -- the assumption that there must always be a right and a wrong way to do everything? The Sabbath issue in the South Pacific seems to have suffered much from this fallacy. When the uninformed join in a discussion of the matter, more often than not they immediately start looking for the "right" answer for a particular country (usually Samoa), without first stopping to question whether such an absolute answer actually exists!

My own research and analysis, as tested and aided by others, have not revealed any such absolute criterion. The fact that “God made His Sabbath for a round world” makes it clear that He intended for there to be a day line. Yet, no one has been able to find anything in the writings of prophet or apostle to show that God has specified any particular location for it!

It is easy enough to broadly trace the natural development of the day line throughout human history, culminating in today's International Date Line -- a line which is defined by the collective decisions of the world's various governments. Based on the silence of the Scriptures, concerning where the day line should be, as well as their clear directive concerning submission to the civil authorities (when acting within their legitimate sphere), I can only conclude that God expects us to use the accepted IDL as our day line for purposes of Sabbath observance. In other words, we must respect the local reckoning in every place.

So I have seen that, when it comes to an orientation relative to the day line, governments are free to choose, and we are not. If we were free to make our own selection of a day line, as church denominations, as local churches, or as individuals, this would effectively allow us to choose our own Sabbath -- a choice for which the law of God clearly makes no provision.

Once we know that our governments are free to choose an orientation relative to the day line, it follows naturally that the true 7th-day Sabbath will always be from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. Therefore, contrary to what has been suggested, it is our very concern over which day is truly the 7th day which leads us to insist on sunset Friday to sunset Saturday without exception.

One might justly ask how we can be so sure that we are right, and all of those (both Adventists and others) were wrong, who believed (back in the 1890s) that the 180-degree meridian was the true day line. Of course, it helps that no one has been able to find any evidence to support that obviously wide-spread opinion -- and that such an opinion flies in the face of the very nature and history of the day line. There is, however, additional confirmation which leaves me with no doubt.

If we are right about the day line, then Sunday can never be the true 7th day. Do Ellen White's words, published in 1900, confirm this? Indeed they do!

”You see how utterly impossible for this thing to be, that the world is all right observing Sunday…” (See ”Day Line Theory.”)

With this ringing testimony that Sunday can never be the true 7th day in any country, it’s hardly a stretch to conclude that Saturday must always be the right day – from sunset to sunset, of course. Therefore, we must always respect the local reckoning, as determined by the civil authorities, provided it complies with either the easterly migrant or westerly migrant week traceable back to Christ and, by implication, back to Creation.

How did we ever miss this point so badly? How could we have allowed Adventist Sunday observance to continue in Tonga after 1900? True, there was a lot of confusion at that time. So many people, ignorant of the nature and history of the day line, mistakenly believed that an international body had placed the day line at the 180-degree meridian! Can it be that we were able to “justify” disagreeing with local governments, by holding them in contempt of that imaginary universal agreement?

Still, we have it clearly documented in Ministry magazine that by 1966 we knew we were keeping Sunday in Tonga. (See ”Ministry, table of contents, January 1966.”) How can it be that our pastors and leaders seemingly accepted the theory which was being advanced, and no one called for a reform? It boggles the mind.

So, here we are today. The matter has now come to a crisis in Samoa, and what are we going to do? We have all the benefit of hindsight. We can read the proceedings of the 1884 Meridian Conference for ourselves. (See ”1884 Meridian Conference proceedings.”) We know that there was never any international agreement concerning the day line. We can trace its history and development to today's IDL. We have Ellen White’s testimony that the world cannot be all right in keeping Sunday – in any country -- ringing in our ears! Can there be any difficulty in deciding which group in Samoa is right? It may not be easy to do the right thing in Tonga, but I think we do know what must be done there, as well as in Kiribati, Wallis, Futuna, and Tokelau. May God give us the courage of our convictions!

Praise the Lord that there are some who are true to our Sabbath heritage in Samoa. My grand mother and her family were the first Adventists in Samoa after coming from Tahiti and I have spent time there with her before she passed away. It would be an eternal loss if there were no Sabbath keepers left in Samoa so my prayers are with those faithful worshippers and also with those who have left the Sabbath for Sunday- may they soon see that a small adjustment for one week does not mean the Sabbath day has been changed by God, it is an adjustment made by man!

							Malo Sharon,

You said, "My grand mother and her family were the first Adventists in Samoa after coming from Tahiti and I have spent time there with her before she passed away."

My grand uncle and a number of my family including my father were some of the first converts in Samoa.

I'm very interested to know more about the early missionaries to Samoa. My email is edwin@puni.co.nz if you can make contact.

Alofa atu,

Pa'u ****

On Sabbath, 3 November, 2012, the Leuvaa-uta branch of the Samoa Saturday Sabbath Keepers (SSSK) group officially opened. For the first time since 29 December, 2011, the doors of the Seventh-day Adventist Church at Leauvaa-uta were opened on the seventh-day Sabbath of the Lord. Tears of joy and exaltation of God flowed freely as the Saturday Sabbath keepers praised the “Lord of the Sabbath” for another milestone in the journey of His Sabbath-keeping children in Samoa.

Leauvaa-uta Sabbath keepers now have exclusive use of their church building for seventh-day Sabbath worship

Seven private vehicles and a bus transported the Lighthouse members from Alafua to Leauvaa-uta. The ride took us through Aleisa and we enjoyed the lush green scenery of the countryside. About ten minutes from the right turn-off at Aleisa, we came across two of our Leauvaa-uta brethren, in white shirts, black wrap-arounds and neckties, waiting with bright smiles by the roadside to show us the way to the SDA church. When we arrived, Salā Peteli Kuresa (on whose land the church is built), elders and members of the Leauvaa-uta Group were waiting with wide smiles to greet us in front of their church building.

With happy faces, Leauvaa-uta members (facing camera) met the Sabbathkeepers (Tagaloa with back to the camera) on arrival

The week before this Sabbath had been a very challenging one for our members at Leauvaa-uta. Right from the start, it had been their wish to remain on good terms with their other SDA members who worship on Sunday. For that reason, they (the Saturday Sabbath keepers) were cautious and courteous in their approach in dealing with the Leauvaa-uta pastor and Sunday-keeping members, requesting that the Saturday Sabbath keepers be allowed to use the church building for their worship on Sabbath with the Sunday keepers to worship there on Sunday. Their requests were denied and all attempts were made to prevent the church being opened on Sabbath (Saturday).

After two meetings, with the last one being quite ‘frosty,’ and the Saturday Sabbath keepers being told that they could not use the church, the Sabbath keepers stood their ground, and informed the Sunday keepers courteously but firmly that the church will be opened for worship on God’s seventh-day Sabbath, commencing 3 November, 2012. The Sunday keepers did not accept this decision and the suggestion for them to continue to use the church on Sundays until the Sabbath dilemma in Samoa is resolved. So as of today (Sunday, 4 November 2012) they have gone elsewhere for their Sunday services. Thus the Leauva’a church building is now the first formal church building in Samoa to be exclusively reopened on Saturday for Sabbath worship.

Approximately 21 families used to worship at the Leauvaa-uta SDA Group until the ‘seventh-day Sabbath issue’ came up in December, 2011, as a result of Samoa’s re-alignment to the date line. Today, seven families are ‘Sabbath keepers’ at Leauvaa-uta, and it is their aim to start witnessing to their people and community. This is not easy, as their firm stand has put a wider rift between them and their Sunday-keeping sisters and brothers.

Our Leauvaa-uta Sabbath keepers are courageous people who, despite the challenges and complications in their way, are determined to “obey the Lord — come what may.”

There are now five Seventh-day Adventist Sabbath-keeping groups in Samoa: Samatau, Lighthouse, Pu’apu’a (Savaii), Multicultural group in Apia and Leauvaa-uta.

Please pray for our Leauvaa-uta members; they need your prayers, especially at this time, as their ship sails through the treacherous and hazardous seas. These days, it is that much more meaningful when we sing the favourite hymn: “Jesus, Saviour, pilot me over life’s tempestuous sea.”

May God richly bless each one of these dear people pictured above as they take their stand for truth!
May their group increase with many more seeking to honor their Creator on His sanctified seventh day each week.

We need to pray for these dear people as the journey ahead is still frought with hardship in a country where keeping the seventh day (Saturday) is regarded as rebellion against the church.

May the power of the Holy Spirit removed the veil of deceit thats so seriously darkened the sights of these love ones. For those that are leading these love ones down this road of deceit, there is a more agonizing destruction awaiting you if you don't genuinely repent and recognize your mistakes. That we may all come to repentance and be ready for His appearance. Here's a song of appeal to all of you.

Are you ready for Jesus to come?
Are you faithful in all that you do?
Have you fought a good fight?
Have you stood for the right?
Have others seen Jesus in you?

Are you ready to stand in your place?
Are you ready to look in His face?
Can you look up and say, "This is My Lord!"
Are you ready for Jesus to come?

							Dear ILaoa,

I presume your comments are made in reference to the 7th-day Sabbath-keepers and not the Sunday-worshippers and I reflected over them in the context of “keeping God’s commandments” and “keeping God’s Word”.

If we accept the 7th-day is located in the sequence of the 1-7-day week cycle after preparation day and before the 1st-day of the week, (according to Mark 15:42 and Matthew 28:1), and, we accept the principal of the universal calendar, then the last 7th-day Sabbath of 2012 was 29th December, upon which the global Seventh-day Adventist community worshipped God. This being the case, do you think this is consistent with “the keeping of God’s commandments” or “the commandments of men”?

You also asked that “the veil of deceit that’s so seriously darkened the sights of these love ones” be removed and I wondered about such a strong statement. Given the wider context of obeying God’s commandments because we love Him, can you honestly say the Sabbath-keepers, who worshipped on the 29th December, the 7th-day Sabbath, when the global Seventh-day Adventists community, according to the universal calendar, also kept the Sabbath, are not keeping God’s commandments?

I also reflected on God’s Word and the following references sprung to my attention. Given your comment about ‘deceit and darkness’ do you think the Sabbath-keepers are being deceived and in darkness, in the context of God's Word?

God’s rich blessing you. ulalei

Matthew 15:8-10 (NKJV)
8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And[ honour Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
9 And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’
10 When He had called the multitude to Himself, He said to them, “Hear and understand:

John 14 (NKJV)
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me.
23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

Since December 29th 2011, Samoa’s change from American to Asian Time has created confusion for Samoan Seventh-day Adventists (SDA’s) because they were told by the Seventh-day Adventist South Pacific Division (SPD) that after December 29, 2011, the 7th-day Sabbath is Sunday, the 1st day of the week. I believe that is not correct and that the 7th-Day Sabbath is still Saturday.

Nowhere in God’s Word does it state that He changed the 7th-day Sabbath to the 1st day of the week. Quite the contrary. Jesus tells us:

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. (Mathew 5:17-20)

We all know that the calendar used globally to determine the day and date is the same for all countries, including Samoa, whether the countries lie east or west of the International Date Line (IDL). That means that the 7th-day Sabbath is the same day and date on both Asian or American time – the day named Saturday, or something similar, everywhere on the planet.

BACKGROUND

The premise of the SPD Sunday worship recommendation to Samoan SDA’s is adherence to an unbroken 1-7-day cycle as defined in Genesis 1 and Gen. 2:1-3. This was accepted and implemented by the Samoan Tokelau Mission (STM) leaders in Samoa, after December 29, 2011.

However, the New Testament clearly defines which day is the Sabbath that Jesus kept. In Mark 15:42 and Luke 24:1-7 it states that the Sabbath is after “preparation day” (commonly known as Friday) and therefore Saturday, before the “first day of the week” (commonly known as Sunday).

1. Samoa was keeping Asian Time prior to July 4th 1892

Prior to July 4th, 1892, Samoa kept Asian Time and was aligned with the same day and date as Australia and New Zealand. Therefore, the calendar below was followed until the first time zone shift on July 4th, 1892. This is how the calendar looked in the context of the 7th-Day Sabbath worship:

2. King Laupepa Malietoa shifted Samoa from Asian time to American time in 1892

In 1892, King Laupepa Malietoa brought Samoa time into line with American time for trade and economic reasons. That resulted with Monday July 4th being repeated on the 3rd day of the week. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Date_Line#Samoan_Islands_and_Tokelau)

In the context of an “unbroken 7-day cycle,” transitioning from Asian to American time would have resulted with the 7th-day Sabbath falling on Friday July 8th, 1892, Preparation Day, as demonstrated in the following calendar:

3. One-time 8-Day Week Adjustment

In fact we know that this did not happen, because a 1-time 8-day week adjustment was made to enable Samoa to transition from Asian to American time, as shown in the following calendar. This ensured continuity of the 7th-day Sabbath on Saturday from July 4th 1892 until 29 December 2011.

It is important to note that while the week-day count was +1 day, with Monday, 4th July, repeated, the day and date sequence remained constant, and therefore, the 7th day Sabbath was July 9th, 1892.

4. God’s Word Defines the 7th-day Sabbath as the Day Before Sunday:

It is important to know what God’s Word says about the sequence of the 1-7-day cycle and where the 7th-day Sabbath is relative to Preparation Day and the 1st day of the week. We have no real way of tracing the 7-day cycle back to creation week, except by the New Testament account. There we find confirmation that Jesus kept the Sabbath on the same day currently known as Saturday, the day before Sunday:

Now when evening had come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath (Mark 15:42)

Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them,

“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” (Luke 24:1-7)

In today’s society, we recognize the names of these days as follows:

Preparation Day = FRIDAY in the current world calendar

7th-Day Sabbath = SATURDAY in the current world calendar

1st day of the week = SUNDAY in the current world calendar

We know that Sunday is same first day of the week as it was in the time of Jesus because it is recognized and celebrated as the day of the resurrection of Christ by most Christian churches.

5. Samoa Seventh-day Adventist 7th-day Sabbath prior to December 29th, 2011

Samoa Seventh-day Adventists followed the calendar that resulted from a one-off 8-day week until Thursday, December 29th, 2011, based on American Time:

After December 29th, 2011, the Samoa government shifted the country back across the IDL from American to Asian time for trade and economic reasons because Australia and New Zealand had become its predominant trade partners, just as it had shifted to American time for economic reasons in 1892. Thus Samoa reverted to its previous Asian time zone prior to July 4th, 1892.

However, the South Pacific Division of Seventh-day Adventists, supported by the STM, issued a directive that the SDA Samoan community are to keep Sunday as the 7th-day Sabbath. The stated reason for their directive was to maintain an “unbroken 1-7-day week cycle” according to creation week.

Unfortunately the SPD and STM leadership have not provided any compelling reason to believe their apparent claim that American time is more in harmony with the 7-day creation week than is Asian time. This claim becomes doubly perplexing when we remember that American time was adopted under the influence of American traders. Thus they have not provided a compelling reason why Samoan Seventh-day Adventists ought to worship according American time.

The SPD directive to keep Sunday as the 7th day has caused confused understanding in time-keeping for a number of reasons:

The majority of Samoan SDA’s follow the SPD directive and live by the Asian time-cycle during weekdays, but on weekends they shift to American time. This results in their treating Saturday as Preparation Day and Sunday, the first day of the local calendar, as the 7th day. They must repeat this practice each week.
At the same time, a small remnant of SDA’s continue to worship on Saturday, the local 7th day of the week, as they did previously.

To compound the confusion, the global Seventh-day Adventist Church community keeps the global calendar, on both the Asian and the American side of the International Date Line. Seventh-day Adventists around the world and a small remnant of SDA’s in Samoa worshiped on Saturday, December 31st, the 7th day of the local and global week, designated as Sabbath by SDA’s world-wide. However, the majority of Samoan SDA’s worshiped on Sunday, January 1st, as their Sabbath. (See diagram below.)

This places the 7th-day “Sabbath” mandated the SPD directive in an odd “No man’s Time,” since the 7th-day Sabbath is December 31st in both the Asian and American (global) calendar, as observed by Seventh-day Adventists around the globe. But Samoan SDA’s who went along with the SPD directive viewed January 1st as their Sabbath, even though it was the local 1st day of the week.

It also poses a situation of disarray in keeping the global calendar on Asian time during the week. By adopting the SPD Sunday worship directive, the week for Samoan SDA’s starts on Monday, the 2nd day of the week, and the 1st day of the week does not exist for them, as it has been replaced by the 7th day. Instead their “Preparation Day” follows the 6th day of the week, but, according to the Bible, the day that follows the 6th day of the week is the 7th-day Sabbath.

6. Plus 1-day adjustment to American Time and minus 1-day reversion to Asian Time

On July 4th, 1892, Samoa shifted time zones from Asian to American time and added +1 day. On December 29th 2011, Samoa reverted to its previous Asian time kept prior to July 4th 1892 by subtracting -1 day.

In the first time change, Samoa shifted from west of the date line to east of the date line, apparently adding 24 hours to the week. And in the second time zone shift, Samoa shifted back to the west of the datelined and apparently deducted 24 hours from the week, as demonstrated in the diagram below.

Re-aligning a country to the other side of the IDL is effectively the same as moving the country over the IDL. It is similar to individuals traveling over the IDL, which happens routinely. In each case, 24 hours are either added or subtracted from the personal week in order to be in harmony with local time. For Samoa, this adjustment allowed the sequence of the day and date to remain constant according to the global calendar, just as it does for individuals who cross over the IDL.

Therefore, the 7th-day Sabbath of the Bible is still on Saturday and correctly situated between Preparation Day, on Friday and the 1st day of the week on Sunday.

Notice that Samoa dropped one 24-hour period (Friday) at the end of 2011 and thus removed the 24-hour period that was added in the first time zone shift of 1892. This enables Samoa to be synchronized with the Asian time cycle followed in New Zealand and Australia.

7. The SPD/STM Calendar for Samoa SDA’s out of sync with Global Calendar since December 29th, 2011

Since the transition back to Asian time, most Samoan SDA’s have adopted Sunday worship, as far as all the world can see. However, the majority SDA community explanation is that it is keeping the 7th day according to is former time cycle. At the same time a remnant of SDA’s is keeping the 7th-day Sabbath on local time.

But in reality the majority SDA community follows a combination of keeping the 7th day according to American time on weekends, and then switching back to Asian time during the week days. By contrast, a remnant of Seventh-day Adventists are being consistent in abiding by local time throughout the whole week and keeping the 7th-day Sabbath on Saturday as they have done in the past.

It is a confused situation whereby the majority Samoan SDA calendar has changed the 7th-day Sabbath to Preparation Day and renumbered the 1st day of the week as the 7th day, thus promoting the observance of an exclusive SDA calendar distinct from the global calendar that the rest of the world observes.

It is clear that this is a private and inconsistent calendar, and to the world it is only evident that Samoan SDA’s have joined other churches in keeping Sunday as their day of worship.

8. The Global Calendar – 2012

(Refer to http://www.timeanddate.com & http://www.timehall.com/calendar)

Since December 29, 2011, confusion continues in the Samoan SDA community because the Samoan SDA calendar is different from that used by the global Seventh-day Adventist community. There is no justification for a different SDA calendar in Samoa, as the following country calendar examples show that the Samoa calendar is identical with that used in New Zealand, Singapore, United States and the United Kingdom, countries representative of Asian and American
time cycles.

The global calendar also follows the same day and date sequence regardless of the week starting on Sunday or Monday. And it is the same on either side of the date line. (Samoa has actually had two calendars for a number of years. The usual local calendar begins the week with Sunday, but the ISO calendar, used in some businesses, begins the week with Monday.)

As demonstrated by the different calendars below, the 7th-day Sabbath is on May 5th, both on Asian and American Time. It is always on Saturday, whether the calendar is from Asia, America or Europe and whether the calendar week ends on Saturday or Sunday:

9. Conclusion

The following are indisputable facts about the Samoan SDA’s Sabbath dilemma. These facts support keeping the 7th-day Sabbath on Saturday, both on the Asian and the American time-cycle:

“Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” (Genesis 2:1-3 NKJV)

The 7th-day Sabbath is the day after Preparation Day and before the 1st day of the week, commonly known as Sunday. (See Luke 15:42 and Mark 24:1-7)

God’s law is unchangeable (See Mathew 5:17-20)

Samoa Time zone shifts are recorded in history:

~ The first shift on July 4th 1892 from Asian to American time added a day to the week.
~ And the second shift from American back to Asian time, on December 29th 2011, subtracted a day from the week.

The global calendar is the same for Samoa, with identical sequence of day and date, whether on Asian or American time.

Whether crossing from Asian to American Time, or vice versa, the 1-7-day cycle is unbroken by a one-time adjustment of 1-6-day or 1-8-day week, whichever is applicable, just as happens when travelers cross the date line.

The Polynesia people migration was from Asia, keeping Asian time. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polynesia) The following illustrates the Polynesian migration and populating of the Pacific on route from Asia to Oceania. Thus the people would have brought Asian time with them.

10. Clarifying Questions

Contemplating these facts, I ask you, who are created in God’s image with His bestowed intelligence and powers of reasoning, the following questions:

Why, if Polynesians migrated from Asia, would their original time-keeping be misconstrued as anything other than Asian time?

With the first time-change on July 4th, 1892, when King Malietoa shifted the nation from Asian to American time, why would there be any dispute about the original time being Asian?

Before the first change, the 7th day was Saturday on Asian time. From July 4th 1892 until December 29th 2011, the 7th day was Saturday on American time, the continuity enabled by 1-time 8-day week. Why would the principle of a 1-time 8-day week adjustment be acceptable in 1892 and not acceptable after the second change in 2011 by a 1-time 6-day week in order to transition from American back to the previous Asian time-cycle?

God’s Word is absolute, and in Mark 15:42 and Luke 24:1-7 it indicated clearly that the 7th day is after preparation day and before the first day of the week, commonly known as Sunday. Why does the SPD contradict this identification of the Sabbath by the directive for Samoan Adventists to consider Sunday the 7th day of the week when it is really the 1st day of the week according to the local and the global calendar?

If, according to Mathew 5:17-20, God’s law is unchangeable, on what basis does the SPD and STM have the authority to change the 7th day to the 1st day of the week?

Is it possible that the sequence and the names of these days could be any other days of the week and not as read in these Bible references? Are there other Bible references to the contrary?

Why would the global calendar be the same in all the world and show the 7th day as Saturday May 5th while in Samoa, the SDA calendar shows the 7th day to be Sunday May 6th?

If God represents order as opposed to chaos, does the SPD Sunday worship directive enhance Seventh-day Adventist community harmony or create disharmony?

Does Seventh-day Adventist Sunday worship in Samoa prepare believers for the final crisis that will be experienced throughout the world as foreseen by Ellen White and written out in the last chapters of the Great Controversy? (See references at end of post.)

According to God’s Word and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide your reactions to the above questions, do you believe that the 7th day is Saturday or Sunday?

Finally, to be a true Seventh-day Adventist is to keep the 7th-day holy as a sign that the Lord is our righteousness and sanctification. The Sabbath is a sign that distinguishes God’s remnant people from the rest of professed Christendom. (See Exodus 31:13; Ezekiel 20:12,20)

Is it possible that the same Sunday that is the mark of Rome’s authority can also be a sign of God’s remnant people?

Which day will you keep?

the Sunday which is the mark of Rome’s authority?

or will you keep the Sabbath Jesus kept?

There are three main ways to "correctly" determine between Asian and American dates:
(1) Follow the historical migration pattern.
(2) Follow the Christians who brought (restored) the 7-day week to a certain place/people.
(3) Follow the Adventists who brought (restored) the prophetically significant Sabbath to a certain place/people.

We can debate between (2) and (3). (I personally lean toward (3).) But (1) is simply impracticable in a round world and irreconcileable to the prophetic role of the Adventist movement. Let me question:

* Native Americans migrated from Asia and Europeans migrated from Europe. Should they keep different days because of how their ancestors migrated? Should churches across NAD (minus GMM), IAD and SAD meet on Friday?

* The Adventist movement began in North America. Are you saying the whole thing started on a wrong footing?

So please leave the migratory history (i.e. (1)) alone and keep the debate between (2) and (3).

Cecil, thank you for your contribution.

I agree that migratory history is irrelevant, except that some have referred to an "unbroken cycle" at a particular spot since Eden, and for that purpose it would seem to be necessary to know where a population originated, because we can count "an unbroken cycle in either direction from the landing place of the ark.

Could you please explain what you see as the issues between view 1 and 2?

Thanks much.

							Dear Cecil,

Thank you for your insight.

In response to your first point, the context of the Polynesians' migration as a point of reference is simply to underline the fact that they came from Asia keeping Asian time reckoning. Therefore Samoa, being west of the IDL prior to the 4th July, 1892 time change, were 24 hours in advance of countries east of the IDL.

In regard to your comment relating to the Adventist movement starting in North America, and having "started off on the wrong footing", it did not. But in terms of the missionaries coming to the South Pacific and applying American time reckoning when it should have been Asian, yes, they did "get off on the wrong footing," so to speak.

God's rich blessings.

Ulalei

The Steering Committee of the Samoa Saturday Sabbath Keepers (SSSK) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Samoa met for the first time on September 30, 2012.

This Steering Committee, through its authorized officers, will be the official collective voice of the SSSK with regards to communications and dialogue with the Samoa-Tokelau Mission (STM), Trans-Pacific Union Mission (TPUM), the South Pacific Division (SPD), the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists (GC) and others in relation to the current Sabbath dilemma in Samoa and related issues.

The collective name and identity for members of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Samoa who keep Saturday as the seventh-day Sabbath will be ”Samoa Saturday Sabbath Keepers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.” In Samoan, it is “Mafutaga Tausi Sapati Aso Toonai i Samoa a le Ekalesia Aso Fitu o le Toe Afio Mai.”

While the name may appear long, the committee wished to ensure that the identity of the Saturday Sabbath Keepers in Samoa is clear and unambiguous, including the fact that SSSK continue to be members of the official Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The steering committee was appointed by a general meeting of the SSSK on September 2, 2012, to steer the future course for the fellowship and to plan and organize activities for the collective good of its members.

This action was deemed necessary because the Samoa, American Samoa and Tokelau Mission (STM) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has formally abandoned and refused to provide any pastoral or other church related services to the SSSK who are also members of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church of which STM is a part.

SSSK Chairperson, Fuimaono Esera Rimoni

The Steering Committee declared the purpose of the SSSK to be “To demonstrate our love and respect for God by obeying all His instructions including the Sabbath on the 7th day of the week from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday. In addition, to comply with the same instructions reiterated by the General Conference in Session as recorded in the Church Manual and in the Exposition of the Church’s Fundamental Beliefs authored by the General Conference.” STM has made clear that it cannot accept the SSSK choosing to continue to keep Saturday as the seventh-day Sabbath after the Samoa IDL re-alignment in December 2011, even though the seventh-day Sabbath is defined as being Saturday in the world-wide Seventh-day Adventist Church in its Church Manual. That Manual defined God’s Sabbath is on the 7th day of the week from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday.

Chair person of the SSSK is Fuimaono Esera Rimoni, a former member of the executive committees for the Samoa Tokelau Mission (STM) for several years and most recently the committee which discussed the Sabbath issue in 2011. In the past he has also been a leading elder for the several SDA churches including Alafua, Togitogiga and Sapunaoa and currently the Lighthouse church, as well as a former representative in the world Seventh-day Adventist annual church council meetings. Before becoming a Seventh-day Adventist, he was a member of the LMS.

Fuimaono is also a retired accountant and former director of finance for the NZ government office which controlled affairs for Tokelau for 23 years. He holds five chief titles and tausi aiga, nuu and itumalo for over 40 years to date. Having been a commercial cattle farmer for over 40 years now, he remarks, with a twinkle in his eyes, “I can talk about animals and understand them maybe better than people.”

The SSSK’s mission statement is “To play our part to the best of our abilities to spread the Gospel (including God’s instructions concerning the Sabbath) to hasten His return so we can enjoy Heaven and the New Earth with our Almighty God.”

The Committee agreed on the goal of the SSSK to be “to assist to reunite all Seventh-day Adventists in Samoa in obeying God and the General Conference in Session by keeping God’s Sabbath from sunset Friday to sunset Saturday.”

Currently some members within the SSSK are raising the question of whether to become an independently registered entity. Thus far SSSK’s have been sending tithes and offerings to the STM in obedience to God’s instructions and SDA polices, but the local Mission leadership refuse to provide any pastoral and other church-related services. Furthermore, besides denying SSSK’s the use of Seventh-day Adventist churches, the STM, some local church pastors and a number of Sunday Sabbath keepers continue to take actions to frustrate the Saturday Sabbath Keepers from observing the Sabbath on Saturday.

In spite of the frustrations of the current situation, many Saturday Sabbath Keepers are cautious about being registered as an independent entity. They argue that more study and understanding is needed regarding the likely implications before such a collective decision is made. They advise patience and allowing time for dialogue with the Mission, Union, Division and General Conference as an official group with regards to the Sabbath dilemma in Samoa and related issues. Accordingly, the SSSK, will not be registered as an independent entity at this stage. They will continue to remain members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Samoa.

The Committee was informed that a multi-cultural group will be formed, and the Steering Committee fully supports the establishment of this group for the benefit of those who do not understand Samoan or prefer to be members of this group through which they serve and worship God.

A group of about 40 or so adults and children from the Salelavalu Mission church in Savai’i made a stand for God’s Sabbath (Saturday, the 7th day of the week), left the Mission Church a couple of months ago and joined the SSSKs in Savai’i for a few weeks. The group then moved on to join the Samoan Independent Seventh-day Adventist Church (SISDAC) which also keeps the Sabbath on Saturday.

Apart from this occurrence, each of the leaders from the three (3) centers (Pu’apu’a, Samatau and Lighthouse) reported that notwithstanding the tough challenges their respective centers continue to encounter from time to time, their members have remained faithful to Sabbath keeping and have stayed loyal to the cause.

No one is known to have abandoned keeping the Sabbath on Saturday and returned to worship on Sunday. To the contrary, new persons join the SSSK almost every Sabbath, particularly at the Lighthouse. There were also additions to the Samatau group in September.Mission Church a couple of months ago and joined the SSSK’s in Savai’i for a few weeks. The group then moved on to join the Samoan Independent Seventh-day Adventist Church (SISDAC) which also keeps the Sabbath on Saturday. Apart from this occurrence, each of the leaders from the three centers (Pu’apu’a, Samatau and Lighthouse) reported that, notwithstanding the tough challenges their respective centers continue to encounter from time to time, their members have remained faithful to Sabbath keeping and have stayed loyal to the cause.

All official releases and communications from the Steering Committee (representing all SSSK in the SDA Church) will be from Emoni T Tesese and Fuaoa Tia Collins (Communication Officers) in consultation with the Chairperson (Fuimaono E Rimoni).

But the Sabbath … Continue reading -->

While the Hebrews were slaves in Egypt, they did all the work so Pharaoh could rest. God delivered them from their works and gave them the Sabbath commandment, telling the Hebrews “I will do all the work now, so you can rest.” 1

Over time, Sabbath keepers have been accused of keeping the Sabbath in order to be saved by their works. But the Sabbath is a rest day not a works day, so the exact opposite is true. We rest on the Sabbath, to demonstrate that we have faith in Jesus and not in our works. We rest our faith in the merits, righteousness and works of Jesus and not in our own works.

By contrast, Sunday observance is a man-made day of worship in a worship system worked out by man and not God. It is similar to the worship of Cain who, by bringing the fruits of his field from where he had been working, was presenting his own works as an act of worship. God refused the works of Cain as well as all the works of men. Abel brought the lamb as a sign that he was trusting the Lamb of God Who was to come. By bringing the lamb Abel was showing that he did not trust his works to save him, but would be saved by the Lamb.

When we keep (cherish, preserve or treasure) the seventh-day Sabbath we are acknowledging the fact that only Jesus can save us. Our salvation is found in Jesus alone, so we follow His example by worshiping on the day that kept holy. “He [Jesus] went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read.” Luke 4:16 NIV. Notice that the Bible does not say that it was the Jewish custom; it was His custom.

“Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.” Exodus 31:13 NIV.

God makes it clear. The Sabbath is not a sign that we are made holy by our works. It is a sign that He makes us holy by His grace and not our works.

Think about it. Satan knows we are not saved by our works. Satan knows we are saved by grace. Satan wants us to forget the Sabbath and thus forget the God who saves us by His grace. It is not so much the Sabbath or the law that Satan is at war with. He is at war with God’s grace, and he works to destroy any sign of God’s grace. Thus Satan has worked for years to make people forget the Sabbath, which is a sign that God makes us holy by His own grace and not by our works or any man-made system of worship, which is legalism.

When God sanctifies us He separates us from the world. When He sanctified the Sabbath He separated it from all other days. Just knowing which day is holy does not save us. That would be salvation by the works of the mind, which is the same as the works of the flesh. We are saved by faith, and we show faith in God’s sanctifying power, by keeping the day holy. Years ago, Sabbath keepers would notice that while Sunday keepers went to church on Sunday, calling it holy, that they still did not observe it as the Sabbath once they got out of church, but went about their daily secular activities. Well the time has come now, when many Sunday keepers can say the same about Sabbath keepers. Keeping the Sabbath holy is more than going to church on Sabbath. It is a 24 hour period from even to even. See Leviticus 23:32 By faith, God has separated the whole day from the rest of the world.

“On Friday let the preparation for the Sabbath be completed. See that all the clothing is in readiness and that all the cooking is done. Let the boots be blacked and the baths be taken. It is possible to do this. If you make it a rule you can do it. The Sabbath is not to be given to the repairing of garments, to the cooking of food, to pleasure seeking, or to any other worldly employment. Before the setting of the sun let all secular work be laid aside and all secular papers be put out of sight. Parents, explain your work and its purpose to your children, and let them share in your preparation to keep the Sabbath according to the commandment.

We should jealously guard the edges of the Sabbath. Remember that every moment is consecrated, holy time. Whenever it is possible, employers should give their workers the hours from Friday noon until the beginning of the Sabbath. Give them time for preparation, that they may welcome the Lord’s day with quietness of mind. By such a course you will suffer no loss even in temporal things.

There is another work that should receive attention on the preparation day. On this day all differences between brethren, whether in the family or in the church, should be put away. Let all bitterness and wrath and malice be expelled from the soul. In a humble spirit, “confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.” James 5:16. 472

Nothing which will in the sight of Heaven be regarded as a violation of the holy Sabbath should be left unsaid or undone, to be said or done upon the Sabbath. God requires not only that we refrain from physical labor upon the Sabbath, but that the mind be disciplined to dwell upon sacred themes. The fourth commandment is virtually transgressed by conversing upon worldly things or by engaging in light and trifling conversation. Talking upon anything or everything which may come into the mind is speaking our own words. Every deviation from right brings us into bondage and condemnation.” –Ellen White, Counsels to the Church, Page 263

Instead of working this Sabbath (Saturday) to provide for you and your family, would you like to show your faith in God’s amazing grace, by resting on this day instead, and letting the whole world know, as Abel did, that you believe God’s grace will provide for your every need and not your works?

“To all who receive the Sabbath as a sign of Christ’s creative and redeeming power, it will be a delight. Seeing Christ in it, they delight themselves in Him. The Sabbath points them to the works of creation as an evidence of His mighty power in redemption. While it calls to mind the lost peace of Eden, it tells of peace restored through the Saviour. And every object in nature repeats His invitation, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” –The Faith I Live By, p. 33.

With this thought in mind, I would like to share a study from the “In Light Of The Cross Bible Study Guides,” which I prepared so that people can see our sacred truths in the light of God’s love as opposed to the legalistic view we are often accused of.

The Sabbath

Brief overview: The seventh day of the week, Saturday, is God’s holy Sabbath on which we are to rest from all secular work and activity. God sanctified the Sabbath day and made it holy. See Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus, 20:8-11, Exodus 31:13, John 14:15, Revelation 14:12

Why it is important to understand the truth about the Sabbath:

The Sabbath is the only commandment that begins with “remember” while it is also the one commandment man has forgotten. While many agnostics believe that God created us and then left us on our own, the Sabbath tells us that our Creator wants to have a relationship with us. The Sabbath also tells us who our God is. You can keep the other nine commandments and worship any god you choose. You can have no other gods before you besides television and not bow to any other god than television and so forth. The Sabbath commandment is the only commandment that tells us who the Lord is. He is the Creator. This is why Satan wants us to forget this commandment. He wants us to forget God. He wants to be our god instead!

The Sabbath is a sign that we belong to the true God, the one who created us and died for us.

Why it is important to understand the Sabbath in light of the cross:

Satan does not want us to forget the Sabbath in order for us to forget the law. Satan knows we are not saved by the works of the law but by grace. The Sabbath is a sign of God’s grace. We do no work on that day, demonstrating that it is not our works that sustain or save us but rather God’s work, both at creation and the cross, that sustain and save us. We rest on the Sabbath, showing that we are resting our faith in the only One who can save us, Jesus Christ. I can imagine God walking with Adam and Eve through the garden, as He showed them all He had made for them, and the wonders of not their works but His works. Adam and Eve realized that day with God, “it is] He [that] hath made us, and not we ourselves.” (Psalms 100:3) Before and after the cross, the Sabbath is a sign that it is God’s work that creates and sustains us.

The Sabbath commandment reminds us that God is our Creator and we refrain from work and worldly activities on the Sabbath day as we rest our faith in God’s power to save and provide for us, instead of our own works and ability to do business and make money.

The same principle is seen in the story of Cain and Abel. In Genesis 4 we read about Abel worshiping the way God had commanded in bringing a lamb as a sacrifice. God accepted Abel’s sacrifice because the lamb God instructed him to bring pointed to Jesus – the Lamb of God who would be sacrificed for our sins. Abel, beyond just worshiping as God had instructed, was saying he trusted in Jesus to save him, rather than his own works. He was looking to the cross. Cain’s sacrifice was refused because he did not worship the way God had instructed, and he brought his own fruit, the work of his own hands. God cannot accept our works and could not accept Cain’s works either. Only the Christ can save us.

Today, many people like Cain, try to be saved by worshiping their own way. Jesus says about them, “But in vain they do worship me, teaching [for] doctrines the commandments of men” (Matthew 15:9). Our own works and man-made ways of worship will never save us.

There’s a story of a little boy years ago who had built his own wooden sailboat. After tying it to a string he set the boat out to sail in a nearby creek, and then would use the string to reel it back in. One day the string broke and the little boat fell victim to the rapids and sailed away. Several days later the boy was window shopping downtown when he saw his boat in a toy store window. He went inside told the owner, “That’s my boat in the window.” The owner of the store, not sure if he should believe the young lad, told the boy he would have to purchase the boat if he wants it back.

The boy did chores around the home and neighborhood to earn the few dollars the boat cost. He returned to the store and purchased his own boat. Walking home, holding his boat close to his chest he was overheard saying, “Little boat, you are twice mine. First I made you, and then I bought you.” That is what Jesus is telling us through the Sabbath today. As we rest from our works on the Sabbath and put our faith in Him, He tells us, “You are twice mine. First, at creation I made you, and then at the cross I bought you.”

Further study on the Sabbath:

Which day is the Sabbath?

But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates:

For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:10, 11

How can we know which day is the seventh day?

Some reject the seventh-day Sabbath over the belief that we cannot know which day it falls on today, so picking any day should be okay. But this is fallacy.

According to Scripture, Christ died on Friday and rose on Sunday, the first day of the week. Practically all churches acknowledge this by observing Easter Sunday and Good Friday.

“This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. The women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment” (Luke 23:52–56).

This is clear evidence that Jesus died the day before the Sabbath. The day of His death was a “preparation day” because it was the time to get ready for the Sabbath. Notice, then, that the women rested over the Sabbath “according to the commandment.” The commandment says, “The seventh day is the Sabbath,” so we know they were resting on Saturday. The very next verse says, “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared. … And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre” (Luke 24:1, 2).

Hasn’t the calendar been changed since the time of Christ?

The calendar has not been changed so as to confuse the days of the week. Just as we know that Jesus and His followers observed the same day as Moses, we can be positive that our seventh day is the same day Jesus observed.

Pope Gregory XIII did make a calendar change in 1582, but it did not interfere with the weekly cycle. What did Gregory do to the calendar? He changed Friday, October 5, 1582, to be Friday, October 15, 1582. He did not affect the weekly cycle of days.

The Jews have observed the seventh day from the time of Abraham, and they still keep it today. An entire nation of people, all around the world, continue to observe a Sabbath they have known for more than 4,000 years.

Over 100 languages on earth use the word “Sabbath” for Saturday. For example, the Spanish word for Saturday is “Sabado,” meaning Sabbath. What does this prove? It proves that when those languages originated long ago, Saturday was recognized as the Sabbath day and was incorporated into the very name of the day.” -Joe Crews, Seven Facts About the 7th Day.

Who was the Sabbath made for?

And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Mark 2:27

Whose day is the Sabbath?

Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Mark 2:28

What does God call the Sabbath?

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [thine own] words: Isaiah 58:13

When is the Sabbath to be observed?

From even unto even, shall ye celebrate your sabbath. Leviticus 23:32

What marks the beginning of a day?

And the evening and the morning were the first day. Genesis 1:5

What did Jesus do on the Sabbath?

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. Luke 4:16

What else should be done on the Sabbath?

And, behold, there was a man which had [his] hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift [it] out?

How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days. Matthew 12:10-12

What are we to “remember” to do?

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Exodus 20:8

What are we to refrain from on the Sabbath?

Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that [is] within thy gates:

For [in] six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them [is], and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:9-11

Why were the Jews carried into captivity?

In those days saw I in Judah [some] treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all [manner of] burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified [against them] in the day wherein they sold victuals.

There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing [is] this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath. Nehemiah 13:15-18

What are we to learn from this?

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God [did] from his.

Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. Hebrews 4:9-11

What does God want us to be?

And [they that shall be] of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. Isaiah 58:12

How only is this possible?

If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, [from] doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking [thine own] words: Isaiah 58:13

What is God’s promise?

Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken [it]. Isaiah 58:14

							Dear William,

Thank you for this reminder:

The Sabbath is a sign of God’s grace. We do no work on that day, demonstrating that it is not our works that sustain or save us but rather God’s work, both at creation and the cross, that sustain and save us. We rest on the Sabbath, showing that we are resting our faith in the only One who can save us, Jesus Christ.

In the arguments over the "correct" day, it is altogether too easy to forget the correct reason and the correct way.

If we view the Sabbath as a means to secure our salvation, the correct day will be of utmost importance to us, and it can lead us to treat each other in a most un-Christlike way. The Pharisees were very particular to keep the Law of God so they wouldn't miss out on heaven. But they crucified the Son of God Himself!

The same thing could happen to us if we focus on the "correct day" and miss spending time with the Lord of the Sabbath.

If the Sabbath is a sign of God's grace, then, in order to keep the Sabbath truly, we must be fully surrendered to the Lord of the Sabbath, knowing that our Sabbath keeping doesn't save us and other people's Sunday keeping doesn't condemn them - unless they are resisting the voice of the Spirit in their lives. And, since we have no way of knowing how God is speaking to them, we have no way of judging whether they are truly serving God. In fact, uttering words of condemnation demonstrates our own law breaking in that we claim the prerogative of judging that God has reserved for Himself.

I appreciate your reference to the fact that over 100 languages of the earth use or used to use a word analogous to "Sabbath" for Saturday. Many nations have now changed over to a different name, but it does tell us something that ancient languages correctly identified the seventh day as the Sabbath.

Of course, in this respect the South Pacific Islands are an exception. The indigenous people had forgotten the seven-day week until the missionaries from Britain arrived there. And, when they did, they re-introduced the 7-day week and named the days to harmonize with their beliefs. Since they were Sunday keepers and believed that Sunday was rightly kept in fulfillment of the fourth commandment, they named the first day of the week "Sabbath," just as they had referred to it in Great Britain and as it was also named in the New England states of America that had been established by the Puritans. So in these island nations, Sunday is now known as "Sabbath" even though it is the first day of the week. In fact Tonga's stringent Sunday laws are known as "Sabbath laws" in their legislation.

So we have a bit of a mixed history regarding the naming of the days.

It is Satan's work to create confusion, and he has surely been successful in the South Pacific islands. By joining the rest of the world in Sunday keeping, some of our fellow Seventh-day Adventists in the South Pacific have allowed their banner of truth to be dragged in the mud. God understands their hearts, and He will judge them accordingly. But as this world's history draws to a close, it is time for His truth to shine clearly even in places like Tonga where the people have never been exposed to the seventh-day Sabbath truth, because Sunday was misidentified as the seventh-day Sabbath by the first Seventh-day Adventist missionaries. Now that we know better, it is indeed puzzling that the South Pacific Division of Seventh-day Adventists should work to broaden the scope of the misindentification. It just serves to demonstrate that, as long as human beings are in positions of leadership, they are capable of being misled and making mistakes. And it points up the importance of each of us having our own relationship with God and asking His Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth, according to Christ's promise in John 16:13.

As we try to shed light on the darkness of confusion so that truth may prevail, I pray that we will be guided by the Lord of the Sabbath who Himself is the Truth, the Way and the Light. And may we always remember that we are saved only by His grace and not by keeping the correct day.

Amen to Inge, and amen to you, William! What a powerful and timely message! There was however one statement in your article, William, which has compelled me to question it.

Satan does not want us to forget the Sabbath in order for us to forget the law.

I believe the difference between truth and error is actually more subtle than that. Please correct me, if you believe I am mistaken, William. My understanding is that the great controversy between Christ and Satan is all about God's law. Lucifer thought that obedience to law was unnecessary for the angels, who were naturally perfect. God's law, of course, defines sin and righteousness, which are therefore at the very heart of the cosmic conflict.

Where we mess up is when we start to think (consciously or unconsciously) that we as fallen beings have some natural goodness or virtue of our own by which to win God's favour, and by which to form a righteous character through obedience to God's law. The truth of the matter is that we are entirely helpless and dependent on the grace and righteousness of Christ to make up our deficiencies, both for pardon and for purity of heart and character.

Oh yes, we do have free will, and God needs our consent at every step of the way. Jesus never said it would be easy or popular to be saved. Nevertheless, by utter reliance on Jesus and by a living connection with Him, we can be saved by His love -- indebted to Him for absolutely everything. He is our peace of mind and our ability to stand tall without conscious guilt. He is the source of any goodness or righteousness that may appear in our lives, and He is our entrance into God's kingdom of glory at last.

Does all of this fit with your views, William? As you have pointed out, the Sabbath symbolizes the way that we rest confidently in His ability to save! It's all about our relationship with Jesus.

I see the subtle nature of the distinction between legalism and true obedience illustrated in the crisis over the Sabbath in the South Pacific.

God bless!

Thank you Inge and R.G. for you comments. R.G. I agree. Where you quoted me, it was more of a figure of speach, meaning it was more than just the law satan wants us to forget about. He wants us even more so to forget God's grace. But yes, in the process he must make us forget the law.

Sunday’s section of this week’s Sabbath School lesson states, “In some cultures, there is a tendency to distrust and challenge leadership; in others, to blindly submit to it. How has your own culture’s attitude toward authority impacted the church in your area?”

In an interview with David Frost, Richard Nixon, a former United States President, forced to resign due to a scandal, defended himself by saying, “If the President does it, then it is not illegal.” This bold statement shocked David Frost, and every other competent thinker! I suspect that in the United States, people really started to question their leaders after Nixon’s downfall.

I believe we keep a healthy balance of respect for leadership, without blind submission, when we ask for accountability and checks and balances. In the United States we have a constitution the President must hold to. The Constitution also declares who ultimately has the authority. It reads, “We the people.” Not “me the President” or “me Thomas Jefferson, or James Madison, or Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama.” The power and authority of the Constitution comes from “The People!” Therefore our president is not above the law.

In the church we have the Scriptures as our sole authority, and our leaders must be held accountable. And the church as a body has authority, ”God has ordained that the representatives of His church from all parts of the earth, when assembled in a General Conference, shall have authority.” –Last Day Events, p. 56. Just as in the United States, the President is not above the people, the church leaders are not above the church.

“The church is built upon Christ as its foundation; it is to obey Christ as its head. It is not to depend upon man, or be controlled by man. Many claim that a position of trust in the church gives them authority to dictate what other men shall believe and what they shall do. This claim God does not sanction. …. Upon no finite being can we depend for guidance. The Rock of faith is the living presence of Christ in the church. Upon this the weakest may depend, and those who think themselves the strongest will prove to be the weakest, unless they make Christ their efficiency. “Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm.” The Lord “is the Rock, His work is perfect.” “Blessed are all they that put their trust in Him.” Jeremiah 17:5; Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 2:12.- Desire of Ages, Page 414.

Many years ago, I heard the testimony of a church leader, defending himself for some shady deals, saying his boss told him to do it, therefore he had no choice but to obey his boss who had “authority.” I am sure Joab was thinking the same thing when King David told him to put Uriah on the front lines of the war. Please read what God’s messenger has to say about Joab’s rationale.

“And Joab, whose allegiance had been given to the king rather than to God, transgressed God’s law because the king commanded it. David’s power had been given him by God, but to be exercised only in harmony with the divine law. When he commanded that which was contrary to God’s law, it became sin to obey. “The powers that be are ordained of God” (Romans 13:1), but we are not to obey them contrary to God’s law. The apostle Paul, writing to the Corinthians, sets forth the principle by which we should be governed. He says, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1. –Patriarchs and Prophets, Page 719.

We need to be respectful of authority, but we need to remember where authority ultimately comes from. And while respecting those in leadership, and even being in leadership, we must remember we are accountable to the Scriptures and God’s church, of which Christ is the Head. Even Martin Luther, the author of the Protestant Reformation, tried his best to be respectful of the leaders of his church. It was not his goal to start a new church, much less a movement that would change the globe. He sought to bring his leaders into harmony with the Scriptures, and it is only after his efforts to work within his church failed, that he had to make a choice between allegiance to God or allegiance to his leaders. Martin Luther was loyal to the only One who loved him enough to create him and die for him. Likewise we should make every effort to submit to our leaders as far as we can without being disloyal to the One who died for us.

I would also like to share a parting thought. In my years of gospel work around the country, I have met people who are afraid to speak up in board meetings or church business meetings, because they feel they are too young or poor, and their influence would not be felt. I have also observed people abusing their age or money to hurt others. I would like to encourage all—no matter how young, old, rich or poor you are—you need to speak your mind in these meetings. And, no matter how young, old rich or poor you are, you need to be nice when you do. Everyone has a right and a responsibility to speak, and everyone has a responsibility to be nice when they do so.

Very well said. Thank you. Truly God is our Supreme Leader, who have the ultimate authority in everything. We must help, respect, and love our leaders. But when we see them violating the very teachings they ought to obey, when we are very sure their leadership is not showing a good example to follow, that is, their ways are directly contrary to the will of God and the teaching of Jesus Christ - then we must, in earnest prayer, respect and love reach them and let them know where they fell. The Bible said that we are our brother's keeper, and since our leaders are just our fellow brothers/sisters, we must do so with love and Godly.

Thanks for that article. I, for one, don't relish reproving leaders but this issue has brought many people forward who may not usually speak out.
I believe leaders are worthy of extra support and encouragement, and they are also tasked with greater responsibility to do what's right. I cannot see anything right in the SDA Church enforcing Sunday in Samoa or anywhere else.

I am concerned with the lack of openness on the part of many of our leaders. Is there a plan to keep the membership in the dark about their duty in these matters?

The issue of the Sabbath dilemma in Western Samoa is irrelevant to the Sabbath School lesson. The opposing party posesses the spirit of independant & the spirit of separation that it hilights the true darkness they have. We must surrender all our human intelligence to the controll of the Holy Spirit in order for us to see the revealed Will of God. You will continue down that slippery slope as long as you preserve those selfish ideas. May the Spirit of God mercifully make a way to humble the perplexed heart.

Thank you, William, for reminding us that Christ is the ultimate head of the church on earth, and not any man at any level of the church structure.

Thus our first loyalty must be to Christ, since we--lay people, pastors, conference union and General Conference leaders--are all fellow laborers in His vineyard. We just play different roles, as Paul so aptly illustrated by comparing the body of Christ's church to a literal body. (Rom 12:3-7)

Christ has promised that the Holy Spirit would guide the believers into "all truth" (John 16:13), and that promise is not made to pastors alone. It is made to all believers.

Thus, when leaders give instructions that don't seem quite right, we need to take the matter to God in prayer, and ask the Holy Spirit to guide us "into all truth," claiming the promise of Jesus that He will do so. Then loyalty to God demands that we follow where the Spirit leads, in harmony with His revealed will in Scriptures, even when leaders want to lead in a different direction.

History--both in the Bible and since that time--has demonstrated that leaders, even in God's church, are not always right. And it is dangerous to follow a leader who is wrong.

At the same time, we need to respect leaders and make their lives easier. If they are good leaders, they will follow the example of Christ and be servant leaders.

							Dear Asoleiuga,

I agree with you that "We must surrender all our human intelligence to the controll of the Holy Spirit in order for us to see the revealed Will of God."

However, may I respectfully suggest that which day is the Sabbath is of supreme relevance to any "Sabbath School" lesson.

The question at the end of Sunday's lesson asks, "In some cultures, there is a tendency to distrust and challenge leadership; in others, to blindly submit to it. How has your own culture’s attitude toward authority impacted the church in your area?"

William's post focuses on this question, and it is also an issue underlying the Samoan Sabbath dilemma--whose voice do believers follow? Must they do what the leaders say, giving blind loyalty, irrespective of what they feel in their hearts to be right? Must they do what leaders say, even when the reasons leaders give do not hold up under close scrutiny?

Christ has promised to give the Holy Spirit to all believers, not just to leaders. And we must claim that promise as we seek to do what is right.

Is it possible that leaders may be in rebellion against the Holy Spirit?

Thanks to William for a well-written, timely, and insightful article. So then, how do we apply these principles specifically to the matter of the Sabbath in Samoa?

“The powers that be are ordained of God, but we are not to obey them contrary to God’s law."

Has the Samoa government asked anyone to do anything contrary to God's law? Certainly not! Their choice of an orientation, relative to the date line, is well within their legitimate secular sphere of authority. Nor have they told anyone when to observe the Sabbath. Any effect that their decision may have had on anyone's Sabbath keeping is purely incidental. Therefore, those Christians who are in Samoa are under a moral obligation to respect the civil authority, as ordained by God, by recognising Samoa's new position relative to the International Date Line.

What about our Seventh-day Adventist church leaders in the South Pacific region? Have they asked our members in Samoa to transgress God's law in any way? I believe that they certainly have. As I see it, the choice of Sunday -- which is still the 1st day of the week, no matter what rationale may have been proposed to the contrary -- as a "sabbath" is a clear violation of the 4th Commandment.

Why is it so difficult for you to see that the 7th day is now call sunday in western samoa calendar. The 7th day is still in plain view and is un altered by this change. If you can't figure that out by now, than you are blinded by your self reliances. Only by true repentance that will open your spiritual blindness.

Arrogance and selfish motives clouds any respect in open discussion on issues of importance. I must point this towards those who aspire to promote their own agenda without due respect to the leaders. God will indeed reward or punish leaders when they err. So why should we try to judge now? Let the supreme judge have His final say at His own time. It is not our flawed judgment that should even be considered on this issue of Sabbath.

							Dear Asoleiuga,

I too am having great difficulty in seeing the emperor's new clothes. Your idea, that the "unaltered" 7th day is now called Sunday, only seems to make sense from the narrowest of perspectives. As soon as one broadens his view to look outside of little Samoa, the whole idea falls apart.

I must ask you this: If you cannot sustain your arguments from the facts of the Bible, science, and history, then how can you be so sure about the spiritual condition of those who do not agree with your opinion? Church leaders have been wrong before. If this were not the case, then shouldn't we all be Roman Catholics?
