Men in the kitchen

If a lady can snag a guy with a roast chicken, surely the opposite must be true. A guy needs to have a few tried-and-true recipes in his back pocket as well as know his way around a kitchen. Preparing a well-executed meal is a highly satisfying and impressive experience. Need to have the in-laws (or future in-laws over)? Want your partner to do you a special favor- or you want to get out of doing something? Need to mark a special occasion? Grab your apron, a good recipe, and get cooking.

Cook books that have never failed us:

Mastering the Art of French Cooking- Julia Child. There may be a movie about it, but it's still a no-fail classic.

How to Cook Everything- Mark Bittman. Longtime food journalist for the New York Times. A straightforward and delicious book.

The Cooks Illustrated How-to-Cook Library. From the show/ magazine Cooks Illustrated, PBS mainstay. These recipes have been tested and tested again- helping you to have a no-fail outcome.

Of course there are great cooking apps, and websites with more than just recipes. One website to help you become savvy in the food world is Food Republic.

Less expensive, and at times, more grand, dining-in on a meal prepared by you can set you apart from the other guys.

Swagapolooza

This past Tuesday evening Sabøteur took part in Swagapolooza. Made in San Francisco

Sabøteur was overjoyed reading about SFMade.org in yesterday's New York Times. As a San Francisco-based company, we're always looking for ways to enhance our community. All Sabøteur designs, patterns, samples are made right in San Francisco. Our warehouse is in the Bay Area as well. When we were starting out, we ran into some road blocks with manufacturing here, being told by local factories that they "didn't have the pressing machines needed" to make our blazers, we were crushed. Forced to look overseas for manufacturing, organizations like SFMade prove what we believed all along- that the Bay Area can support garment manufacturing and compete in the global marketplace. Looking toward our next collection, we hope to say we're 100% made-in-the Bay Area.

Tom Ford's 5 Easy Lessons for Being a Gentleman

A style icon and tastemaker, Tom Ford knows how to create a look. Beyond the clothes, the attitude of the man wearing them is what carries him. Part of an upcoming interview with AnOther Magazine, Tom gives his five easy lessons on how to be a gentleman:

1. You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you.

2. A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.

3. Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they're walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.

4. Don't be pretentious or racist or sexist or judge people by their background.

5. A man should never wear shorts in the city. Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

If you don't work (number 2) there could be a host of reasons. Sabøteur men are not boring. Keeping yourself current and fresh will prevent you from becoming a bore. Number 5 may be a little harsh as well. Sabøteur has seen plenty of stylish men wearing city shorts in an understand and classic way. Pairing clean-front city shorts with one of our shirts and brogues for instance, is great spring transitional look. Flip flops, however comfortable they may be, aren't appropriate for all settings, so we agree with Mr. Ford there.

Get the Perfect Shave

While shaving can seem like a mundane task, your face really is the first thing people see. Shaving not only makes you appear well-groomed, it exfoliates your skin, gives you a more youthful appearance, and starts you on your day. Once a manly passage, a ritual handed from father to son, it's more about getting out of the house on time than doing it properly.

How to shave.

Always start with a wet face. After your shower is ideal as it opens your pores and allows for a closer, less irritating shave.

Fill your sink half way with hot water. Wet your face with hot water as well. Use the sharpest razor you can. Many disposable razors aren't worth their salt. Better options are the cartridge types (you replace the razor only) and the best at-home razor you can use is the double-edge razor. Think your grandfathers razor. The one JFK and James Bond used. Sean Connery's James Bond.

Lather your face with a good shaving cream, one that is thick enough for your beard and able to hold on to your face throughout the shave. Wet your shave brush in the hot water. Ideally, you're using a shave brush to apply the cream in a circular motion. A shave brush is made from various types of hair with the best ones being made from badger hair. The brush allows the cream and hot water to mix together before hitting you face, creating more emulsion than your fingers can.

Now that your face is fully prepped, wet the blade in the hot water and shave with the grain, not against. Your face is too sensitive for a wrong-direction shave. After each swipe of the blade, rinse it off in the hot water. This both cleans the razor and keeps your face moist. Once finished, rinse off your blade and brush. Wash your face in cool water to close the pores.

Follow with a good after shave (preferably alcohol-free to avoid further irritation) to moisturize and act as an antiseptic for any possible nicks.

Take a look in the mirror. You're a man. Dress like one. Shaving is part and parcel.

Men's style at the 2011 Golden Globes

While we love seeing the ladies strut down the red carpet, last night we were a-buzz about what the gents wore. Seeing more individuality while wearing a tux was welcome. The men donned patterned tuxedos (Ricky Gervais) and patterned ties (Zac Efron, Hugh Laurie, Michael Douglas) livened things up a bit. There was also added color, a nice wink to formalwear when it’s paired and done well on Robert Downey Jr. as well as Robert Pattinson’s midnight-navy Gucci Made to Order. Christian Bale’s lack of color with his black-on-black choice paired with Cartier cufflinks worked for him (we shall say nothing on his hair). As for button covers, we were happy to see them. Reserved for the most formal occasions, they add a nice sense of occasion and sparkle. Colin Firth and Johnny Depp showed us how to do it different ways.

Smelling better.

No one wants to smell bad. That's why you started wearing deodorant and body spray in the first place. Well, that and the cute girl in 3rd period like the way Drakkar Noir smelled. On you.

Wearing a scent is the finishing touch on getting ready. No sense is stronger at recollection, so the scent you wear becomes part of you. You don't need to apply the entire armada of products either in your chosen fragrance. While body spray, body wash, after shave and cologne are all great and useful, no one wants to be a walking fragrance counter. Applying in small dabs or a light spritz to your pulse points (neck, wrist, or face for after shave) should cut it. A person is supposed to be close to you to smell it. You can always reapply later in the day to keep the scent going.

Going about choosing a scent can be overwhelming. There are many to chose from, and not all fragrances smell the same on everyone, as they mix differently with personal chemistry. When choosing one, it's helpful to know that mens fragrance consists mainly of 4 types: Citrus, (fresh, clean) Leather, (honey, tobacco, woody), Oriental or Ambered (vanilla, woodsy), and Wood (sandalwood, cedarwood).

When at the fragrance counter, narrow it down to two choices, dabbing a small amount on each wrist with one. Let the fragrance settle or mingle with your own chemistry while you walk around the store, and then decide after some time has passed. Remember, you want to smell sexy, not sleazy.

A Gentleman at the Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving day is all but here. You know where you're going, and what you're eating, but what will you be wearing?

Try to spiff it up a bit for the day, someone was up at 6am monitoring that turkey and spent all day in the kitchen so you could have a great meal on a day off. Think of where you'll be dining- Grandma's, the in-laws, friends or at a restaurant, and let that be your first consideration for what to wear.
Your gathering may not call for Sunday finery, but a sweater over a button-down with pressed jeans will say "polished yet relaxed." Dining out? Wear a blazer. You want to add a sense of occasion to the festivities and a blazer will do just that. Shoes and belt should match. Make sure yours are clean, polished, and neat looking before trudging into someones home. Socks too- if yours is a house with a no-shoes-indoors policy, then at the least make sure they match and are hole-free. Extra credit for a patterned pair or something colorful.
A gentleman always brings a hostess gift. It shows you care. It shows you take time and effort. It can be as small or as elaborate as you wish. Bottles of wine and bouquets of flowers are appropriate and appreciated. Maybe there are small children? A toy or something to keep them entertained will earn you big points.
At the table, remember your manners. It may be family and friends you see everyday, but again, by maintaining good manners you add so much to the day. Saying "I've never had sweet potatoes cooked this way before" served you well when you were eight, and it can serve you now. Hitting on your friend's sister at the table, not so much.
