I take my own photos

While sitting at a bar going through the outfit photos I just shot, I suddenly heard a voice from right behind my left shoulder, "What are you shooting?!" (Imagine a really high voice inflection at the end). My not-so-eager response, "Myself." Kind of awkward, I know. I always get asked what I'm taking photos of, what my blog is about, but mostly WHO takes my photos.

I do. Me. It's always been me. (except for a few occasions) And here's why: I have always been able to rely on myself, I have always been able to fit it into my schedule, and I'm kind of difficult to work with. I am a very particular person, I know what kind of shots I like to see and I like to think that I know my best angles. So, It's just easier if I do it myself.

This always seems to be an odd sight for passers-by. It's almost a given I will get stopped and asked what I'm doing. And trust me, after 4 years of doing this form of ultimate selfie, I've got it down to a science. Need a little guidance in taking your own photos for your blog? I'd love to help! So without further adieu, here are my secrets to taking my own photos!

1. Equipment:
When I take my blog photos my essentials are simple: A camera, a tripod and a remote. The camera that I use is the Cannon Rebel t3i. This was the first camera that I bought and I am still 100% in love with it! It has a screen that flips out and folds around so I can look at myself in live view.

The remote I use is THIS one.

Good shot, yeah?

And the tripod is just one that I picked up from Best Buy. Nothing fancy, but it does the job.

2. Next, The location.
I do have my favorite spots and I also have my spots of convenience. Normally I have about 30 minutes before I have to run out and do something or go to work, so I have minimal time to bust out outfit photos. I'm lucky I live in an awesome neighborhood with lots of great spots within walking distance. Depending on the time of day I go different places. If it's around noon, or whenever the sun is high in the sky, I normally try to choose shaded areas (Bridges, sides of buildings, etc…).

If I have a the night off and I am able to shoot at sunset I love to find new places to shoot and catch that beautiful light!

3. Getting the shot:
I set my lens on auto focus and put the remote function on the camera. I set up the tripod so it is just slightly taller than me and pointing at a slight downward angle. I feel like this simulates an actual photographer.

4. Shots I take:

My go to shots are usually some combination of the following:

Close up smiling
Full length of outfit
Outfit details
Hilarious outtake
Shoe Shot
Serious look off into the distance
Walking and looking to the side
Dancing or doing something dumb.

Am I right?

5. Confidence.
This is the most important part, and let me tell you in the beginning I had very little of this in my wheelhouse.

The photos that I took were in secluded places with terrible lighting where I would hope I wouldn't run into anyone. Now, the places that I love to shoot at are normally highly populated with people, and I'm just fine with that.

For me, knowing that I'm doing something that is interesting to others makes it all worth while. I love doing things that push my limits and it may make me feel slightly uncomfortable but that's what helps us grow, right? Doing things outside our comfort level. It's silly, I know, but trust me it is so much fun!

And trust me, we all start somewhere so don't worry if your photos aren't perfect at first! It took me about 2 years to really nail it!

I feel like it's about that time for me to do some reflecting. I've been very hot and cold when it comes to blogging. I get a wild hair one day, and drop it like a bad habit the next. The thing of it is I really want to be blogging. I really want to be sharing and writing and photographing and babbling…

It's just not happening.

Real talk: I don't even remember my dreams. Ever. But lately I've been having these really vivid dreams about being kidnapped. Sometimes I will even awake in a panic. I talked to a good friend about these dreams and she asked me this, "Do you feel like something has been taken away from you lately? Something in your life if missing?"

Boom. Nailed it.

I guess I didn't really recognize what a big part blogging held in my life. I've been neglecting that creative side. And it's just bubbling up and basically about ready to burst. Thank goodness for the encouragement of good friends, the entertainment they provide and just the fuel I need to set my blogging spirit on fire again!

Okay so here's the thing I'm going to answer. The question you're not asking because you're too nice, I get it.
My boyfriend FULLY supports my blogging. No, he hasn't locked up my computer and demanded all of my time, honest. I've just wanted to spend all of my time with that boy. We work out together, we cook together. It's, like, the best. I know I know… fully blown mushy relationship stuff. But you have you ever heard me talk about anyone like this? It's like that Simon and Garfunkel song is playing over and over again and we are doing the dance scene from 500 Days of Summer.

I know I know. I'll stop.

I just wanted to clear a few things up, that's all!

I was born on the 21st of October, which means my half birthday is coming up, but that also means I am a Libra. Now, I've never been one to live my life by a horoscope but I do have fond memories of reading them with my Nana. We were always so lucky if we got a 4 star day.

If you know anything about Libras you know they are all about balance. And if you know anything about me you know I am not. I have always had a hard time prioritizing. I tend to focus my energy all on one thing and then I end up with about 19 loads of laundry to do on my only day off. So, at the moment, this is my struggle. Although it's not necessarily a bad thing, I always want to be improving. Ya know? Little changes here and there.

I'm not going to make any promises that I can't keep, like never having dishes in my sink. I am human. And I do eat food. But I'm going to more conscious of how I leave the spaces around me. I just need a little time to start this whole, clean up. If I'm lucky, I get 2 days off in a row and if I'm really lucky one of those days lines up with that man of mine. So, you see what I'm saying… priorities.

Anyway, I could ramble on forever about my lack of motivation to clean house, but I will leave you with this nice summer outfit post, instead. Enjoy!

Weekend Rundown

This was a very rare weekend for me. I had 3 days off and barely any plans. Really the only thing on my list was to attend the Farm Chicks Antique show with my mom and friend Brooke, but other than that…

Nothin.

Oh and I don't know if you can tell, but I've totally been working out.

I really didn't even take that many pictures… weird, right? Who am I?

I am currently reading #GIRLBOSS. I would highly recommend this to any blogger, business owner, or if you just need a little inspiration! Sophia's rags to riches story is not your typical "Work-hard-and-it-will-pay-off" story. As I read I felt like she was talking to me. Just chatting with a girlfriend. A wildly successful girl friend who is cool as shit.

Seriously. It's a great read.

I know it's Tuesday afternoon and I'm just posting this, but… it's better than nothing, right?

Oh… I also binge watched Orange Is the New Black.

Now that we are reacquainted, I think it's only fair I told you what I was up to this past month! I could go on and on with about a million word blog entry but instead I'll keep it sweet. Here are some of my favorite photos and words to go along with from my month blog-cation.

Earlier this month I assisted in styling a photoshoot for a local publication. I got to work with an amazing team and got to finally meet Crystal Madsen! Thank you Lindsey (Glam Vintage Rentals) for the amazing opportunity! I will be sure to share the photos with you when they go into publication!!

It's been just over a month since I have opened this little blog of mine, and I'm finally ready to get back at it! You see, for the past few years this blog has featured stories of love, heartbreak, family, my journey with The Bachelor…. And you have been right there with me for all of it. Although I have still been lightly active on instagram, I have been focusing more on my real life relationships (one in particular, really) than social media.

It just seemed like the natural thing to do.

There was not much thought behind quitting blogging for a month, it was just sort of the end product of starting to date someone seriously. Not blogging this past month gave me the opportunity to have some of the most amazing experiences with my (now) boyfriend. Before we started to date I was pretty attached to my phone and computer. Always checking, always updating, always something…. this past month has been a welcomed change.

Now, this is the difficult part. Now that I am reintroducing myself into the blogging game, how do I find a balance? I guess that's just something that will work out over time because, let's be real, my blog is a major priority. This is something that I love. Something that brings me joy and one thing that I can say that I'm actually good at! So let's get to know each other again, yes?

Hello Friends! My name is Sabrina. Whether this is your first, third or thousandth time to this blog, I sure hope it's not your last! A little about me: I'm short, I live to travel and explore, my nails are usually painted but I'm not afraid to get dirty and my favorite food group is pie. Or french fries. Or waffles. Nice to meet you!

I like to describe my blog as a personal life and style blog. Although I keep those words separate, I work style into every aspect of my life. My style may not be the same as yours or other fashion bloggers, but I hope you can take a little something away from it! Heart and Soul

Have you ever been terrified of being happy? I know this is a weird question to ask. Currently, it's way too early in the morning and there are tears filling my eyes as I write this. Why? It's not of sadness. Fear isn't the right word… I can't pin the emotion. I'm at this place right now where I am balancing playing it cool and putting my heart right there in the open. This balancing act is not my strong suit. So I turn to music.

Tonight, I tried something I've never done before. I listened and I wrote. I wrote exactly what I heard (I had to pause and replay a few times…damn you slow fingers!!) And then I read what I wrote.

Although I know I connect with music and lyrics in a specific way, this process made this song by Mumford and Sons all the more meaningful.

The last time

The last time I wore this outfit I was in a different place. A different place in all meanings of the phrase.

Last time: I was attending a polo event.

This time: brunch with my family.

Although they may not seem to be complete extremes, I assure you they are.

At this moment in time I can honestly say I'm a completely different person.

Last time: I was still getting over a crazy broken heart. I was occupying my time with new friends and fun events. I was traveling a lot and trying to keep myself distracted in order to just sort of erase the world of hurt I was feeling.

That always works, right? Just burry the feelings and they will go away. Right.

So despite the free spirit vibe I was trying to exude, my spirit was anything but free.

Holding tightly to something that most definitely wasn't mine anymore left me with this feeling that I wan't equipped to deal with.

In all honestly the only thing that really got me through it was waiting it out.

You know that saying "Time heals all…" Yeah, it's kind of true.

Not that I was just sitting around idle waiting for my mess of a heart to repair itself, but more than anything it took time for me to actually feel comfortable to share that part of me again.

And if we're being really honest here, the last time I wore this dress I got up on stage and tried to be an auctioneer. Although I thought I was most fabulous, others did not.

So I figured the second time around couldn't possibly be worse than that.

So here's to second chances! (plus I love this dress.)

Dream Team Does Vegas

Let's just get right into this: Las Vegas is officially one of my best friends. We have this new found love… I just can't get enough. So as you know, my blog friends and I have been planning to meet up for the past… ohhhh 3 years or so! And it finally happened! We all bit the bullet and bought our plane tickets, booked the hotel and started giggling like little girls in excitement! The countdown began and we could barely contain ourselves! Vegas will always hold a special place in my heart, as will these 4 girls: Ashley, Carissa, Erica and Shalyn.

Leading up to Vegas I only got about 30 minutes of sleep the night before…. Of course I saved all of my packing for the last minute! And I was a little distracted (but I'll save that story for a different blog!) There were so many things I had to take care of: finish packing my carry-on, apply my tan, paint my nails… Time was not on my side. Yes, I overpacked, in case you were wondering.

Drew and Kurt (Shay and Erica's Men) surprised us with a limo stocked with champs! We started our vegas trip off right!

First thing, we headed to the hotel, checked in and poured ourselves a drink! Our goal was to head to Old Vegas and ride the Zipline! Little did we know it was down for repairs…. but we found something else to occupy our time: Blackjack! Turns out Erica is a baller. I'm not actually surprised at all.

Definitely not supposed to take pictures at the tables… but you know us! Always breaking the rules.

Night one: Tryst

Ashleigh, dear unsuspecting Ashleigh! I am SO happy you were able to join us in our adventures.

This girl is probably the SWEETEST human ever. She made each one of us a care package. Asprin, dramamine, pedialite, gum, epson salt… THE WORKS. You saved us Ash!

So at Tryst we got to experience the High of Highs and the Low of Lows… when we first walked in we were greeted by a nice body guard that asked us if we would like to join a table. We said yes and were led to a table with older men that had absolutely no interest in talking to us. Ummmm right back at you buddies. So within 5 minutes we were asked to leave. It was both hilarious and insulting.

So we made our way outside and found some really nice guys that offered us their table complete with 2 (new) bottles of Grey Goose. Thanks Elo!

We had such a fun time our first night but knew we had a big day ahead of us at the pool, so we headed in at about 3… I think?

Day 2: Encore Beach Club aka "The Money Shot"

Ignore the mess… but this was pretty much the best the room looked all weekend!

This bathing suit makes me happy. And if you can't find the humor in it… well… That's okay.

We sent Shay over to make friends with Maggie and RoseMary. They shared their booth and booze with us! They were so sweet!

Night2: XS at the Wynn

Craziness. SO packed! Diplo was the DJ and it was wall to wall insane. We were led outside in hopes of getting a table, but instead we ended up waiting by the blackjack tables. Which wasn't the worst thing. We got free drinks and Erica won $250! CASH MONEY.

While hanging around the black jack tables, Rissy and I found our tickets to a table. Andrew and…. dude from Texas. They were nice enough and let us play blackjack with their money, which was probably the worst mistake they ever made…. $1200 later. Oooops.

Soon we found ourselves being led through the crowd like a human whip, it was pretty hilarious. All holding hands so we don't get lost… we found the table and, um… WOW. Vodka and tequila galore. We danced on the booth, took hilarious snapchats felt really cool while doing so. I'd say it was a pretty fantastic night.

I can't even explain the love I have for these girls.

Day 3: Daylight at Mandalay Bay

The morning was a little rough. But when in Vegas… vacation mode kicks in and we were all ready to rally! We got 2 free drinks right off the bat, so we got them and walked around looking for the best place to land. Soon enough Ashley gets approached and we are asked to join a bachelor party.

And so it began!

By midday we were all exhausted! We left to rest up, take a nap and prep for the nights activities.

Night3: Marquee at the Cosmopolitan.

Day4: We are all dehydrated. Tired. But NOT ready to leave. We made a special trip out to the Vegas sign. With what little energy I had left I made a jump for it with my favorite ladies!

Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to Ashley K far too early. And after all of that her flight got delayed 3 hours!! Carissa, Shay, Erica and I hung around the Bellagio pool and tried to finish off the bottle of vodka we were carrying around. Turns out… non-alcoholic drinks are just about the same price as ones with alcohol….The things you learn in Vegas.

Sunglasses indoors. This was necessary.

Saying goodbye to miss AshBash!

This trip was 2 years in the making and I have to say it was WAY better than anything I imagined. Ashley you are just as sweet and sassy as I thought you would be. So adorable with your southern charm. And… Um… Girls got a BOD. Dang. I cannot wait until I get to see you again.

Carissa: Pretty sure we're related somehow. I'm not exactly sure how that works, but we are on the same wavelength. Thank you for going along with all of my crazy ideas and laughing along with me!

Erica: Always a joy. Just a little ray of sunshine! Even when you were not feeling well you toughed through it and out-danced all of us! We are all now connected by our Alex and Ani puzzle pieces, I love you E!

And Shay. Dearest Shay. I am so thankful for you in my life. I've been able to spend the most time with you out of anyone and every time I just feel SO lucky. You are the most caring girl I have ever known! You are always thinking about others and putting others before you. I love how excited you and E were over the baby reveal for The Howards! Your joy was my joy.

I am so lucky to be apart of a group of girls that are fun, positive, successful, outgoing, smart, beautiful……. aaaaaannnnnddd SO much more! I love each and every one of you.

Well friends! There it is! Vegas. All in one post. Who thought that was possible? It only took me 2 weeks to get it to you!

If you know anything about my style, you know I usually don't follow rules. I base my style on these key factors: Do I love it? Am I comfortable? Can I style it a few different ways?

Case in point: This Camilla Olson blouse. This top is called the "First Impression." It is not only silky soft, but it has this amazing casual fit that allows it to be super versatile. I'm probably the last person you will find in a corporate setting, but I know this shirt would be able to make that transition if I ever was. I took the approach of more of a "festival" type look (In the spirit of all things Coachella). It's easy, effortless but still put together. I am in the process of writing a post about my recent trip to Las Vegas. It's probably the hardest thing I've ever done. How much do I tell? How many pictures do I post? Or should I just go on and on about how much I miss my friends?? I'm thinking that's where I'll start.

For now… I have a few updates:

I am back from Vegas.

I have not unpacked.

I have not done laundry (which isn't really necessary).

I am back to work (it was a rough first day)

I am back to my normal voice.

I am now on a work out plan. (Looking at pictures of Sabrina in a bikini…. YIKES.)

Shift dresses are one of my favorite silhouettes. They are easy to just slip on, dress up, wear casually, layer with tights… the options are plenty. I loved this bright floral print from H&M! I wore it to brunch with Katie and even though I was a little chilly without a jacket it allowed room for expansion after eating chicken and waffles, and really, that's what's most important.

Just a few days before Vegas and I'm slightly freaking out. So the other day I had some what of a disaster happen with my sewer line… That's as much as I will say about that! So things around my house have been acting a little weird. Water pressure has been low, hot water not that hot… And now the washing machine is out cold. Of course! On the one day that I am actually feeling motivated to do some laundry! Oh well.. such is life.

So I will be heading to the laundry mat to wash everything I own. Sounds like a fun day right?

Secrets Secrets

Do you watch Pretty Little Liars? Well that is one show that I get all FAN GIRL over. If I ever meet those girls in person (Especially Lucy Hale) I will be in fan girl heaven. What is it about that show that sucks me in?? I think it's all the secrets and deception. Ali would always say "Secrets are what keeps us friends" or something like that… So I thought that I would reveal some secrets…Only if you promise not to tell. Interested? Read on…

-Sometimes I receive packages in the mail and have no idea what they are. And then I realize I was online shopping…drunk. The last purchase? A one piece bathing suit with a $50 and $100 bill print. Hello Vegas!
-I color coordinate my closet (That is, when I actually find the time to hang up all of my clothes)
-How many pairs of shoes do I own? It's about double my age.
-The last time I vacuumed I could have made a full wig from all of the collected hair (it's amazing I still have as much as I do)
-I am on a dating website.
-Dirty dishes are my biggest enemy. I usually wait until I know I'm having company to do them.
-Sometimes I'll throw away tupperware instead of washing it.
-I am a cuddle sleeper. Not with a person, but with pillows. I have 5 on my bed and I use every one of them.
-I'm a slightly jealous person, even with friendships. So when I feel like someone is trying to step in: bitch mode.
- And finally, I'm giving up photography. Let me explain. I will never stop taking photos and I will never stop loving photography. When I decided to take on clients and shoot weddings… I really had no idea what I was doing, but I was a great sales person. I scouted out pricing and rates and all that good stuff. I took on friends and friends of friends. It was great for a while, but boy did I get burnt out quickly. I just didn't know what I was getting myself into or how much work it would actually take to create a successful business. That kind of responsibility is not for me.

Sometimes it just feels good to put it out there, ya know? I know they aren't THAT juicy, but I hope by knowing some of my secrets you can feel like you know ME. The real Sabrina. The one who is currently up following cute puppies on Instagram and drafting a blog all about the best Pet Instas to follow. Wait… why am I single?

Guilty. I'm a freakin' girl.
I wear dresses.
I twirl.
I am rarely seen sans glossy lipstick or nail polish.
I watch otherwise really terrible movies when I'm sad.
I get my feelings hurt.
I don't work out as much as I should.
(or much at all, if we are being honest)

But let me tell you about this little conversation I had the other day with one of my best friends.
Maybe I don't live at the gym.
Maybe I don't lift weights heavier than a tray full of food.
And maybe I consider my arsenal of photoshoot-dances to be my cardio for the day (or week).

And though those things may not matter to most people, it does matter to some. A very select some.
I know what I bring to a friendship and a relationship.
No, I'm not in model shape. But usually that's not a requirement in friendships…
That being said that is something I can always work on.
There is something to be said for always trying to make yourself better.
Working on your outsides, is the easy part.

Now I'm not saying I've got everything else figured out.
But I would say that my head and heart are in line. We've got our shit together.
And that's what really matters.

While perusing pages upon pages of Pinterest, I came across the most glorious shirt. It read: "I love my boyfriend. (Just kidding, I'm single.)"

Story of my life.

To be completely honest with you, I'm surprised I'm not writing a post dedicated to my boyfriend. I'm surprised, for the 1000th time a relationship just hasn't worked. I'm surprised I actually care this much.

Without going into too much detail, a recent dating experience went from "will you be my girlfriend?" to "I can't give you what you deserve."

If I had a dollar for every time I heard that… Well I'd have two. Regardless… It's always said in a way that really means, "I'm not willing to try, AT ALL, for you anymore, but thanks for the sex."

Too honest? A little harsh, I know. Trust me, I don't write anything for shock value, I write straight from the heart, and that… is a very sensitive subject. I don't talk about sex on my blog, because I do believe some things should be kept private and sacred. So I think that will tell you just how much this whole situation has me feeling.

So, my friends. I will not be writing a boyfriend post. Unless, of course, we are talking boyfriend jeans. Then I have a very special love letter

Lately I've been trying to come up with different ways to say the same things. Full on sentence synonyms. Whenever asked to describe my style I usually say something along the lines of "feminine with an edge…" And if you were to look at my style as a whole that answer would suffice. If you took a more editorial view you may see my style in a completely different light. Not a day goes by that I feel like my style choices could fit into just one category. Yesterday I was talking uuber girly pastels, today my look is nearing goth. My style spectrum is quite large these days.

So just as Spring is a time for renewal, it shall be on Sabrina Says. Time for some changes. Some surprising, some expected.

Want to know something fun? I've been toying around with the idea of an online boutique. Now… This isn't something I would just jump into. I literally just started thinking about this more seriously just this week. Eventually, I would want a small little brick and mortar shop. I even have a name picked out. So.. in an effort to put my dreams into action, I'm starting the research process. Being a business owner, no matter how big or small, is definitely something I want to be. Fun, right?

How great is this Delicious Agent Clutch? It opens to a large mirror and a space to hold your cash monies and credit cards.

The thought of Spring in the Northwest may seem far away, but if these pastel gems don't make you happy, at this point I think we are all doomed.

Walking the floor at WWDMAGIC I spotted many trends for Spring and Summer. One of my favorites being anything in pastel.
