For most of five years, L.A. hard rockers Sabrosa Purr have roared uncomfortably (at least for those who like their genre lines nice and clean) between the post-punk/shoegaze and metal worlds. The sprawling track “The Lovely People” has been around since their debut EP in 2006 (it’s made a couple TV appearances too); it gets flushed out nicely on the full-length, as does “To Bring You My Love” from 2009′s “Volaras” EP. Produced by Tracy Chrisholm (Stone Temple Pilots, Scott Weiland, Belly), Volaras takes the listener on a journey right from the get go; building up all the way until it comes crashing down. Weather you're listening to its trippy, peaceful Pink Floyd/Mars Volta-esk tracks "My Dirty Hands" and "One Weak Moment", or just simply taking in the unique blend of grunge meets ambiance that is "Hope I'm Not An Idiot", you're in for some interesting moments of enlightenment that will easily leave you wanting more.

Sabrosa Purr is as fascinating and genre defying as it comes. With the release of Volaras, the four-piece group from Los Angeles, California, has left listeners with high expectations for their upcoming, debut full-length release this fall. Starting in a dark, musty rehearsal room/den of thieves on Santa Monica Blvd., Sabrosa Purr is a genre-defying rock band from Los Angeles, California, comprised of members Will Love, Jeff Mendel, Ry Sarmiento and Angie Mattson.

Their new EP Volaras, produced by Tracy Chisholm (Stone Temple Pilots, Belly, Scott Weiland, Devics), prepares the way for their debut full-length this Fall.Not a bad start at all, but stay tuned, there's much more to come.

The single 'One Weak Moment' is a spooky dreamy tune that wanders aimlessly like a ghost looking for someone to haunt. It's a moody delight that reminds me a bit of old Verve. It's beautiful stuff that will whisper in your ear and terrorize your dreams. Good stuff then!

Sara Lov at Spaceland

Went to see the wonderful Sara Lov on the final night of her Residency at Spaceland last night. Fantastic as usual.

It dawned on me while watching her that I enjoyed her set just as much as I enjoyed her with Devics, even though she plays NO Devics songs in her set. It may not seem like a big deal, but I'd be tempted to play a song or two from my old band, especially if they were as good as what she has to draw from.

Anyway, my point is that her new solo material is JUST as strong! Which is crazy.

The melodies in her song "New York" are on par with say, the best Brian Wilson "Pet Sounds" melodies. THAT good!

Yes, there are still amateur Angeleno bands building robust reps through self-financed recordings and compelling club shows (and without monkeying themselves out to reality TV). Sabrosa Purr are an odd collision of loner, stoner introversion and crotch-thrusting fuzz-box rawk. They lurch from the ultra-ethereal, flotation-tank vocals and slithery, succulent guitars of "Suckerpunch Kiss" to the open-shirted glam strut of "Fashion Kills" without so much as an explanation or apology. Though probably more convincing at the former than the latter, they seldom sound contrived. Yet for every moment of earnest Pink Floyd-ish psychedelia, each hint of enigmatic early Cure b-sides or sexy T-Rex flexes, Sabrosa Purr are really all about the original Jane's Addiction -- they're eclectic because Jane's were. The heavily delayed yelps of "Killing the Aries" and "Sabrosa Purr, Pt. 1"'s druggy whimper are downright Jane's addicted, but they're lost in enough love to
forget and forgive. Few bands traverse heel-stomping, classic-rock crunch and eyes-clenched, headphone bliss like this.

So, while we were filming our first video last weekend, for our song "Hope I'm Not An Idiot", I said to Jeff as I was driving us around in a bad-ass 1968 Chevy Nova, "Y'know Jeff, I think there's a huge difference between driving around in a new Prius bumping the new Radiohead and driving around back in the day in a fucking pimped out Chevy Nova listening to a new Zeppelin record."

Don't get me wrong, I love Radiohead and I'm down with the Prius. But...

We're quite excited about our upcoming show at Spaceland with Under the Influence of Giants! We haven't played at Spaceland since our residency there 2 years ago!!!

This will probably be our last LA show for the remainder of 2008 since we're diving back into the studio and beginning work on our next record. Well, maybe two new records actually. We'll keep you posted on that.

There's a wonderful, weekly gathering of musicians, poets, actors, and just fine folks called "Tard and Feathered" in Studio City. We've been trying to check it out for months and finally got to one. Jeff and I played solo sets actually and by "solo", I mean Jeff joined me 3 songs in to add his saucy magic to what are Sabrosa Purr songs anyway. Jeff, of course, did a great job in his solo set. It's always nice to sit out in the audience and watch Jeff do his thing. I missed The Idyllists because I had to go get some dinner, but made it back in time for the f*cking astounding set by Carina Round. If you haven't seen her, GO TO THE NEXT SHOW! Hey, Interscope, nice move letting that one slip through your fingers. Jesus Christ. The record industry deserves absolutely NO sympathy.

We've been walking home after sunrise to go to bed from the previous nights' festivities. Bring ON THE COFFEE. It's great though. We're staying on the Lower East Side for the first time and finally see why people love it so much. So much going on, it's probably good that we don't live here right now. We'd just hang out and never get any work done. Then again, that might be just what we need! :)

We landed last night, got to our manager's apartment around 3 in the morning, now we're getting ready to head to the Belmont Lounge for a midnight set. Should be interesting, since we couldn't find a drumset to borrow. We went to the Manhattan Guitar Center this afternoon and bought a cheap drum machine for Ry to use, and now we're about to "wing it" and completely improvise a set that we've never rehearsed.
Shit yeah!
