Art of West Texas Women: A Celebration will be presented at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Beeghly Library on Thursday, September 9, at 7 p.m. in downtown Delaware, Ohio.

The presentation will be conducted by Ohio Wesleyan Emeritus Professor Laurie Churchill who co-authored Art of West Texas Women: A Celebration with Kippra Hopper. A reception will be held at 6 p.m. in the Mowry Alumni Center.

In addition to Churchill’s time at Ohio Wesleyan, she is a former professor of literature and women’s studies program coordinator, holds degrees from Boston University, the University of Massachusetts, and the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is the author of articles on classical literature and feminist pedagogy and is the lead editor of Women Writing Latin: From Roman Antiquity to Early Modern Europe. Currently she is director of assessment in the College of Education at New Mexico State University.

Art of West Texas Women: A Celebration was published by Texas Tech University Press earlier this year and according to its Web site is:

Representing at once a diversity of style, medium, and scale and an intersection of inspiration and response, Art of West Texas Women celebrates twenty women visual artists living and working in an expansive, rugged landscape—the vast western half of Texas, far from the dynamics of urban art communities and large national markets.

Without attempting to serve as a comprehensive catalog—impossible considering the breadth of activity in a huge region—the book is a sampler of creative expression. The painters, photographers, installation artists, sculptors, fiber artists, and printmakers in these pages are as distinctive and independent as the solitary place that nurtures them. But they also share common threads: all of these artists came of age during the feminist movement of the 1970s and find the expansiveness and relative isolation of their landscapes an elemental influence.

Beeghly Library is located at 43 Rowland Avenue in downtown Delaware, Ohio.

Delaware, Ohio has had 321 single-family homes – not counting single-wides – sell so far in 2010 with a median price per square foot of $88.97.

So when 268 Pinecrest Drive popped on the market at $52.73, or an amazing 59% below market value something had to be going on and it becomes the first Delaware Real Estate HUD Home of the Week.

Delaware, Ohio’s 268 Pinecrest Drive: The Low Down

Located in Delaware’s Shellborne Forest this is a Maronda build home that was completed in 2004 and has a whopping 2,560 square feet with four bedrooms and 2-1/2 bathrooms.

The Breakdown:

The Positive: There are 671 houses in Delaware County with 2,500 or more square feet and this is the second lowest priced home (contact Toby for the lowest) by more than $50,000. On top of the 2,500 square foot above ground is a full-basement and a beautiful 1/4-acre lot.

The Negative: House needs work. Will need flooring throughout and work on the second floor for drywall and plumbing. It appears that water got into the carpet and eventually up into the walls in the master bedroom on the second floor, however the lack of damage to the first-floor ceiling is a “promising” sign.

The Verdict: If you are looking for a “move-in-ready” home, then search for another foreclosure or HUD home in Delaware County, but this house has a lot of potential for the family that needs to get the most space for the right price. The best purchase route would be an FHA 203K and any of our preferred lenders can help you get that process started today!

(Sergio Roberto Bichara/sxc)

Started nearly 50 years ago by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization, this day focuses public attention on suicide prevention and the unacceptable burden and costs of suicidal behaviors. The Take 5 to Save Lives campaign was developed to get people to “Take 5” to do something around suicide prevention including: learn the warning signs, help a friend, share the message with five others and more.

WHO estimates that nearly one million people will die by suicide every year, which represents a global mortality rate of 16 per 100,000 people or one death every 40 seconds. Additionally, for every person who completes a suicide, 20 or more may attempt to end their lives.

“HelpLine diligently works to provide community training and education on warning signs, assisting a suicidal person and reducing the stigma often associated with suicide,” said Sue Hanson, Executive Director of HelpLine.

“We also offer a 24-hour, 7 day a week support and information line and crisis intervention skills training for adults and a monthly Survivors of Suicide support group.”

HelpLine has also recently added its first-ever, full-time Suicide Prevention Coordinator through a grant funded by the Delaware-Morrow Mental Health and Recovery Services Board. Jason Colvin accepted this new role with primary responsibilities including community training and classroom prevention presentations to middle and high school age youth. Additionally, Colvin will engage community partners to meet mutual goals around suicide prevention, while facilitating the Survivors of Suicide support group.

“HelpLine is committed to investing in progressive educational programs and staff experts to ensure we create safe communities that can effectively respond to those in crisis.”

It has been one of the hottest rumors in Delaware, Ohio, since Gretchen and I moved here in 2002. “There is a Chipotle coming to Delaware at …”

Chipotle Mexican Grill has announced it will be coming to Delaware, Ohio.

According to the Delaware Gazette, Chipotle Mexican Grill has made it official and the eatery will be coming to Delaware, Ohio’s Delaware Community Plaza on US 23 at Hull Road. Chipotle will be part of the former Sear’s Hardware located just south of Hull Road.

It will be interesting to see how the addition of Chipotle on the southern edge of town changes the city’s dynamics.

The community already has three Mexican restaurants – El Vaquerro, Fiesta Mexico, and La Cabana – that I believe are on par with Chipotle without the money.

Delaware Community Plaza has been teetering on the verge of relevancy for years with numerous empty store fronts and its largest tenant – wal*mart – already having plans, though currently on hold, to build a new facility about one mile south along Cheshire Road.

Chipotle will be located at 1710 Columbus Pike (US 23) in Delaware, Ohio.

Following a sharp drop in the months immediately after expiration of the home buyer tax credit, pending home sales have modestly risen, according to the National Association of Realtors®.

The Pending Home Sales Index, a forward-looking indicator, rose 5.2 percent to 79.4 based on contracts signed in July from a downwardly revised 75.5 in June, but remains 19.1 percent below July 2009 when it was 98.1. The data reflects contracts and not closings, which normally occur with a lag time of one or two months.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, cautioned that there would be a long recovery process. “Home sales will remain soft in the months ahead, but improved affordability conditions should help with a recovery,” he said. “But the recovery looks to be a long process. Home buyers over the past year got a great deal, and buyers for the balance of this year have an edge over sellers. For those who bought at or near the peak several years ago, particularly in markets experiencing big bubbles, it may take over a decade to fully recover lost equity.”

Yun added, “Affordability could reach a generational high in the second half of this year because of rock-bottom mortgage interest rates, helped partly by the Fed’s very accommodative monetary policy. The loan underwriting standards are tighter, but home buyers can improve their chances of getting a loan by staying well within their budget.”

The PHSI in the Northeast rose 6.3 percent to 62.5 in July but is 21.1 percent below a year ago. In the Midwest the index increased 4.1 percent to 66.7 but remains 25.7 percent below July 2009. Pending home sales in the South rose 1.2 percent to an index of 86.3, but are 15.6 percent lower than a year ago. In the West the index jumped 11.6 percent to 95.0 but is 17.6 percent below July 2009.

The Pending Home Sales Index is a leading indicator for the housing sector, based on pending sales of existing homes. A sale is listed as pending when the contract has been signed but the transaction has not closed, though the sale usually is finalized within one or two months of signing.
The index is based on a large national sample, typically representing about 20 percent of transactions for existing-home sales. In developing the model for the index, it was demonstrated that the level of monthly sales-contract activity parallels the level of closed existing-home sales in the following two months. There is a closer relationship between annual index changes (from the same month a year earlier) and year-ago changes in sales performance than with month-to-month comparisons.
An index of 100 is equal to the average level of contract activity during 2001, which was the first year to be examined as well as the first of five consecutive record years for existing-home sales.

The national index had fallen 29.9 percent in May and another 2.8 percent in June.
