Located only twenty minutes north of Ohio’s state capital, Columbus, Delaware has made a name for itself as one of the fastest growing community’s in the state. The “small town” feeling has remained though with an exahustive effort to keep its downtown vibrant and retain that college town feel despite doubling in population in the past 25 years.

Delaware Ohio is known locally as 19th President of the United States Rutherford B. Hayes birthplace, home to nationally-known Ohio Wesleyan University and home to harness-racing’s Little Brown Jug.

Delaware has become a hot-bed for real estate sales with properties selling as fast as they come on the market in many cases.

Schools

Public Schools

Delaware City Schools is where the majority of students in the 43015 zip code attend school and it has undertaken a major building effort recently to take on the new students. Buckeye Valley Schools serves the north and west side of Delaware County. The middle school and high school campus is on Coover Road in Delaware, while elementary schools are located in Ostrander and Ashley. Olentangy School District serves students on the southside of Delaware County – including the city’s southern edge – and is one of the most decorated public schools in Ohio. Routinely appearing on “top school” lists.

Private Schools

Delaware Christian School is a private schol affiliated with the Delaware Bible Church. Foundedin 1973 its Web site boasts 510 graduates from this small private school. St. Mary Elementary is a Catholic elementary located in downtown Delaware while Grace Community School is located on West William Street.

College and University

Ohio Wesleyan University – Founded in 1842, this private liberal arts institution educates about 1,800 students. Student-athletes compete in the NCAA Division III’s North Coast Athletic Conference and has won 145 conference titles, more than any other institution. Methodist Theological School in Ohio – founded in 1958, MTSO is one of 19 seminaries for the United Methodist Church. The College offers five graduate degrees and is a leader in the evolving church. Columbus State University Delaware Campus – Opened in 2010, this beautiful campus is continuing to take shape. Majority of students earn their Associate’s Degree before transferring to traditional four-year schools to complete a Bachelor’s degree. The Business Management and the Computer Science degrees and several short-term certificates may also be completed on the Delaware campus.

Dining and Shopping

Delaware is becoming known regionally as a “foodie destination” with options that rival communities much larger. 12 West is an amazing southwestern restaurant, while Amato’s Woodfired Pizza takes pizza and pasta to another level and 1808 American Bistro has made you rethink traditional American fare. While Son of Thurman arrival may have legitimized Delaware as a foodie destination, the acclaims heaped on Veritas Tavern show how far the city’s food scene has advanced.

Entertainment

Delaware night life is highlighted by the historic Strand Theater which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. The Strand is considered one of the oldest continually operating movie theaters in the nation. The three-screen theater has not only outlasted time but attacks from chain operations as well. In many ways, the Strand’s success highlights the “Delaware Attitude” where locally owned and operated mattered long before it became cool. Several community organizations offer free concerts throughout the summer and the city is developing a reputation for craft beer with Staas Brewing Company and Barley Hopsters our favorites.

Houses of Worship

The Delaware community is home to numerous religious organizations that cover a wide gamet of religious affiliations. Locations based in Delaware are listed in a recent blog post. The closest synagogues are Congregation Beth Tikvah in Worthington or the Beth Messiah Congregation in Columbus. There are numerous temples in the area as well including Sri Sai Baba Mandir in Lewis Center, Vedic Temple – home to the largest Shiva in North America – in Delaware, and Bharatiya Hindu Temple in Powell.

Parks and Recreation

One fo the great things about growth coming in the 21st century is that the city has been able to manage growth and implament many city parks and trails. Delaware Parks oversees 26 parks including a nine-hole executive golf course, a splash pad, the YMCA, two pools, and Smith Park. The city is currently developing more bike trails to connect greater portions of the city with these parks. Preservation Parks of Delaware County is a county-wide park system focused on maintaining the County’s historic integrity with 10 parks including a traditional farmstead at Gallant Farms among others. C.G. Boyce Broker and President Toby Boyce serves on the executive committee for the Friends of Preservation Parks of Delaware County.

Commute

Delaware City was an agricultural hub for Delaware County up until about 25 years ago. And while the northern portion of the county remains agricultural, the south side has become more suburban. This has led to some growing pains for the county. However, expansion of Sawmill Parkway, I-71 interchanges, and easy access to US 33 shows the County’s committment to making the commute from Delaware to Columbus an easier one.
