Common Name : Wild Asian Water Buffalo
Scientific name : Bubalus arnee

Wild water buffalo are larger and heavier than domestic buffalo, and weigh from 700 to 1,200 kg (1,500 to 2,600 lb). Their head-to-body-length is 240 to 300 cm (94 to 120 in) with a tail 60 to 100 cm (24 to 39 in) long, and a shoulder height of 150 to 190 cm (59 to 75 in). Both sexes carry horns that are heavy at the base and widely spreading up to 2 m (79 in) along the outer edges, exceeding in size the horns of any other living bovid. Their skin color is ash gray to black. The moderately long, coarse and sparse hair is directed forward from the haunches to the long and narrow head. There is a tuft on the forehead, and the ears are comparatively small. The tip of the tail is bushy; the hooves are large and splayed.

Indian Palm Squirrel

Common Name : Indian Palm Squirrel
Scientific name : Funambulus palmarum

The palm squirrel is about the size of a rat, with a bushy tail slightly shorter than its body. The back is a grizzled, gray-brown colour with three conspicuous white stripes which run from head to tail. The two outer stripes run from the forelegs to the hind legs only. it has a creamy-white belly and a tail covered with interspersed, long, black and white hairs. The ears are small and triangular. Juvenile squirrels have significantly lighter coloration, which gets progressively darker as they age. Albinism is rare, but exists in this species.

The smoke emitted from vehicles, the clutter and the polluted atmosphere of cities had always disturbed me. I forgot my land and countrymen, and loved forest." I am in love with u" cheered me to the lush forests. The wild flowers, brooks and animals loved me too.

They gave me fresh air to breath. They danced in front of my camera. They left impressions on my camera lens. I too joined their happiness. Some of them were scared of me. Perhaps because of extravagant affection of parents towards children. They rid me away many times. The human who came before me would have attacked them or they must have misunderstood my camera to a gun. Even then my love for exploring the heart of forest increased. I wished to go there again.

I was in seventh when I climbed forest with my friends for the first time. Then it became a habit. I spend lot of time watching wild life.

"He is mad. Let him not come if he doesn't wish to. Let us move on" these were usual comments from my friends, but I still remained watching the wild world. Later on I was alone in my journeys and that gave me relief. My father bought a film camera for my persistence. My friends claimed that the photos captured weren't taken by me.

I got a computer and digital camera when I reached nine though. A camera that can capture lots of photos consoled me. Journeys to the forests and my passion towards photography increased. During that period, once I saw a beautiful spotted deer for the first time in Karulai. With lots of enthusiasm I cheered to call my friend to see the sight. Unfortunately she ran back and disappeared through the forest. This incident taught me that to maintain silence is inevitable part of wildlife photography.

Later, deers often appeared in front of my camera. It even paused for my lenses. I realized that wild animals never attack humans unless we harm them. The snakes don't bite unless we stamp them. We only have to create a rapport between us and animals.

Many at times, elephants had rid me off. This never meant that they are wild. How can they allow me to invade their region without their permission? In fact it is high time to realize that if animals are wild or we humans. Humans who visited before me would have dragged these animals into danger. Animals have no enemies, but everything that exists in this world is enemies to human race as they consider so. They crush the nature and animals under their feet to dominate. Nature and animals are the part of life cycle. It is impossible to live without them. Hence we have to exist together without destroying their habitat and wilderness. They will love us in return to our concern for them. With the prayer that this wilderness and lush green forests with its species will remain undisturbed ....

Cup fungus

It belongs to the family Pezizaceae ( cup fungus) a family of fungi in the Ascomycota which produce mushrooms that tends to grow in the shape of a "cup". Spores are formed on the inner surface of the fruit body (mushroom). The cup shape typically serves to focus raindrops into splashing spores out of the cup. Additionally, the curvature enables wind currents to blow the spores out.

These spiders construct vertical webs in shrubby plants and decorate their webs with stabilimenta. They usually rest in a head down position on the web. As one approaches the web, they hold their position until the last moment before slipping round in a flash to hide on the other side of the stabilimentum. Argiope is spread across tropics to temperate regions.

This is one of the commonest spiders in Kerala and most people might have seen their webs in the backyards. The spider has a flattish abdomen covered with off white hairs. The posterior end of abdomen has tail like extension. It spins vertical orb webs and is usually found on plants, shrubs even on those in gardens. The under surface of abdomen has a black median patch bordered by white lateral patches. Species exhibit much variation in colour, some are white and some brownish. In its typical resting posture legs are pulled in around the abdomen and carapace thus forming a circular outline. Often near the spider there are some flecks of white silks. Eriowixia ranges from Africa to Papua New Guinea.

This is one of the commonest spiders in Kerala, observed in almost all the districts of Kerala. They are characterized by the presence of hard shell like flattish bodies; and black and white transverse bands on the abdomen. The colouration and shell like body are thought to be providing protection to the spider. The abdomen has three pairs of long stout lateral spines or projections, these lateral spines are actually modified simple spines. Abdomen is also characterized by number of pit like depressions or sigilla. Typically these pits or imprints are dark coloured. They construct vertical orb webs, often in open spaces between the branches of tall shrubs. In its typical posture the front portion of abdomen covers the thoracic portion of cephalothorax and only the cephalic portion is visible from above. The genus Gasteracantha is widespread in the tropics.

Habitat: Shrubs in gardens and secondary forests.

Carapace is round from front with hexagonally arranged eyes. A thin black straight line starts from each of the anterior median eyes, down the vertical face, and continues on down the centre of the long, pale chelicerae at the tip. The abdomen is long and thins. The legs are extremely spiny. There are black vertical bands along the side of the abdomen.

As the name suggest Chital has bright spots on its body. Out of the deer species Chital is the most beautiful of them. Its coat has shining rufous-fawn color with bright white spots all over the body and hardly changes color even in summers.

In India Chital is very widely distributed from the base of Himalayas to the steaming forests of the south except in the north east. It inhabits the fringes of the forests and prefers to graze in the grasslands. Any place with good grazing ground and plentiful water will have the presence of Chital.Chital are always seen in herds numbering 20-30 and will have many stags.

Itching head

In many areas very big herds sometimes numbering hundreds have been seen together. They are known to raid the cultivation fields especially in areas which are adjacent to the forests and cause heavy damage to the crops. The best species of Chital can be found in the terai region in the foothills of Himalayas and in Madhya Pradesh.

Out of all deer Chital are most sociable animal. They can be easily seen in the company of other deer species inhabiting the same forest. A very special relationship worth mentioning is between langur monkeys and the Chital. Where ever langurs feed on the trees, chital can be seen feeding on the leaves and tender shoots which the monkeys drop on the ground. This relationship also acts as an advance warning system against the arrival of predators. On seeing a predator langurs give alarm call which makes the deer on the ground alert against the danger.

Eating grass

The rutting season differs in Chital according to the areas they inhabit.In the northern areas of India they tend to breed in winters and in warmer areas of Madhya Pradesh they mate in summer months. The rutting call of an adult stag is a loud bellow and quite often fierce fight between two stags can be seen for possession of hinds. There are no territorial fights in Chital, the fights when happens are mainly for protecting the doe from other stags.

As Chital are preyed by virtually all the predators they have a very prolific breeding cycle and give birth to young one every six month. In the wild a hind can be seen with two or sometimes three young fawns all of different ages.
