desert and the sea are two sides of the same coin. Loving each, choosing
neither and living in-between, I have been exploring my concept of place and “home”.
Each painted landscape and tiny house is a window into one of my heart-homes:
Anza Borrego, CA, Co. Donegal, Ireland. Izmir, Turkey. Seattle, WA. Yachats,
OR. For “Shelter Ship” I created two perfect houses in the colors of the desert
and the sea, only to destroy them.

Longfellow Creek Views, in progress

Nearly complete are the three largest paintings on wood I've ever made, thus far. Youngstown Flats commissioned me to create these large-scale artworks based off the neighboring Longfellow Creek Trail.

It is an urban park with dense native flora, vivid graffiti and an incredible Fish Bone Bridge sculpture by Lorna Jordan.

In these six-foot panels I have attempted to capture the lush juxtaposition of nature and man that is found in the park. Using positive and negative stain to hint at a rainy atmospheric background with bright botanical paintings in the foreground, as a whole the panels evoke a sense of place.

Working this large has been a true challenge. Even simply designed, 18 feet of painting takes a LOT of time! But the experience has taught me much, opened doors to new creative ideas as well as collaborations and friendships. Too large to fit through the door of my home studio, the commission brought me to share a studio space with artist Carla Grahn. Which in turn has given me a taste of the working-artist community that my own studio practice had been lacking. Just goes to show you never know where a project will take you!

Jan Hoy's sculpture "Continuity II" Installation at Youngstown Flats

Over a year ago, I was given an incredible opportunity. A brand new apartment community was coming to the Delridge neighborhood of West Seattle. Maria Barrientos identified the area as a stronghold for the arts, and the development team wanted the aesthetic of their building to reflect that.

I was brought on board to make it happen.

Michael Harrison's Reclaimed Wood Wall

18 months, a multitude of Calls for Art, selection panel meetings, artist proposals and installation schedules later, the "Art Program at Youngstown Flats" is finally happening!

Carla Grahn installs her piece "Yellow Brick Road"

This has been a big part as to why I have been so silent the past month. All the last minute details and coordination kept me busy! But now installations are nearly complete - only a few works still to be installed.

Ken Turner aligning his photography

To say that this has been an incredible experience barely scratches the surface. I have made connections with new friends and discovered a passion and talent that I did not know I had.
It is difficult work to coordinate this many permanent, site specific installations, but I enjoyed and met every challenge.

PUBS

And seeing a proposal on paper transform into real and true artwork? Pure magic.

Sofya Belinskaya & Antonio Fernandez Collaboration

Right now, I'm beaming.

Right now, I'm beyond proud of everyone's work and involvement.

At some point, too much has passed to ever be able to catch up. At some point, life jumps up and whisks you off your feet.

That point came and went ages ago.

I've found myself no longer thinking in blog posts, but to-do lists instead.

There has been studio work - long days and nights huddled over cups of tea to keep warm fingers and paintbrushes stuck in my hair while I nudged through a large scale commission.

There has been story telling. Words typed and clattered and scribbled into the wee hours of morning.

There was a deep breath pause of a journey to the heart-home of Anza-Borrego.

And then, a return to dive into the deep end of over-committed. I've barely had a moment to myself, much less been able to tell you about it. All good things, and I'm still in the thick of it. But friends are starting to wonder if I'm ill, jumped ship or moved back to Ireland and neglected to tell anyone.

No dears. No. Just giving my all into my creative pursuits and work life.

I'll have to emerge soon however, because there is a show to herald the news of: I'll be exhibiting for the month of May at CORE Gallery. Never has my work felt so true... and never before has it felt so crazed.

It's a somewhat long story, but I recently found myself in short-term need of some studio space. Fortunately, metal working artist extraordinaire Carla Grahn had some space to spare and took me in.

It is quite fun to not only get to spend time in another artist's studio, but also metal is such a foreign medium to me that I've greatly enjoyed all the strange textures and colors. Inspirational, actually!

I am of course bringing a little wood into the mix!

Time has passed... as it often does.

The new year and new age have moved into being. And no, I have not forgotten you dear reader. There just hasn't been all that much to say. Or, there has been an overwhelming amount of too much to say.

There was a little flurry of art deadlines followed closely on the heels by the Holidaze and house guests. But even that isn't really why I haven't popped in to say 'ello. I've been resting. Taking-in... Wintering over... Hibernating. And following my creative muse down a rabbit hole of writing that I did not expect.

But fear not! The seeds are germinating and I know my fingers will itch for paint again soon.

In the meantime, may I recommend a visit to Ghost Gallery? A very intriguing show of print makers will be on exhibition this month, including the Ireland works of yours truly:

Ghost Gallery's Holiday Miniature Art Extravaganza!

To kick off the holidays Ghost Gallery will be filled to the brim with miniature works by local artists. Inspired by my new experiementations I created little prototypes of a brand new series of work branching into 3/D! The show runs through December 31st. Though a word of warning - purchases can be taken home nearly immediately so stop by early if you want to see everything!

Ghost Gallery, 504 E Denny Way at Summit/Olive

Holiday Sale at CORE Gallery

It is time again for the December group show at CORE Gallery and I will be showing some of my favorite Ireland works, as well as a few brand new pieces!
The show opens on Wednesday, November 28th and runs through December 22nd. There will be a festive Art Walk Opening & reception the following week on Thursday, Decebmer 7th 6 - 9 pm.

Alright. Out with it: I've been exploring a direction shift.

I first hinted at it back in August. There has been this disquiet ever since my residency in Ireland. A sense of wanting to go deeper. Do more. Say more with my work.

Then there was a deep conversation with fellow artist Tracy Boyd. Sometimes you need another perspective to ask the questions you've been avoiding yourself.

Questions such as what my art is really about? What have I really been trying to get at? What is my story to tell?

The answer came quite simply.

I'm just looking for "home".

These are some little prototypes for some bigger ideas but they will be on view starting this week over at Ghost Gallery for their annual Miniature Show.

Onwards!
October has proved to be more art-filled and busy than I could have imagined and I LOVE it.
Fall is my favorite time for creativity... and art walking apparently! I've been to four (4!!) in the past 10 days.
First stop, Olympia for the Fall Arts Walk which I enjoyed with friends to meet up for Joey Freer's show at the Fishtail. Top notch! I actually hadn't been to Oly Arts Walk in awhile but thoroughly enjoyed it.

The lovely model with the lovely painting.

This weekend brought with it some stellar shows opening for both West Seattle Arts Walk and Greenwood Phinney Arts. "Yours and Mine" opened at Twilight; a dual show by artists Kate Protage and Chris Sheridan. I've known them both for years now and love their work so this show was a lot of fun. I also feel fortunate that I was celebrating some work-life success and that budgets worked out for me to finally add to my meager art collection.

Here are some more favorites from the weekend:

Jeanine Walker at the Greenwood Lit Crawl

While enjoying a celebratory cocktail and a catching up with a good friend at Gainsbourg the artful evening was capped off by a surprise (at least we were surprised) poetry reading by writers participating in the Greenwood Lit Crawl. Really good stuff!

After all that would you believe that I'm working on my own pieces too?
A little "on the studio" table teaser!

For someone who recently griped about not taking enough time to make art, I sure did a fair number of artful things in the past week.

Including even joining in a large scale painting collaboration with two stellar rock star Olympia artists: Jenna Fettig & Joey Freer.

Ain't they cute?

Joey has an opening coming up this weekend for the Olympia Arts Walk - his work will be up at Fish Tail Brewery!

Laurie Fronek "All of That is Washed Away"

There was even an art opening that my own work was displayed in. It was the CoCA Member Show which turned out quite great. Pictured to the left is one of my favorites from the show.

And while I'm on the subject of making sure you are well informed I must tell you about my favorite new gluten free bakery EVER. Quite dangerous because it happens to be directly on my way to the office.
Coffee and ... Bakery is honest to goodness the BEST gluten free baking I've had. They make a superb cup of coffee too. If you are anywhere near the market and have a hankering a highly recommend. And no - they did not tell me to endorse them at all - they are just that good.

There was an unexpected and inspiring good time this Saturday at the KEXP Shake the Shack Hot Rod Show. Loved the pairings of vintage bikes with the trucks. I've always had a soft spot for old Fords thanks to my Dad and Grandpa.

Although, this officer might have me swayed towards an alternative.

And who says a hot rod can't also be an art car? Check out the spiderweb roof on this rat rod!

I also spent some time soaking up inspiration of the ancient sort from the King Tut exhibit currently on view at the Pacific Science Center. Interesting show and I did enjoy it... However, there were SO many people all taking pictures with their phones of EACH and EVERY display that the only picture I felt compelled to take and share is this one from the old news reel footage.

Is this the new trend then? To go to a museum exhibit and rather than buy the book you just take your own photograph of every single thing in said exhibit? I don't often gripe here but I must say how deeply disturbing it was to be in a room full of people doing just that.

Tidbits from the Studio

The turn of the weather into soft grays and cooler days means that I've finally been here again. Working. Playing.

And it's oh so nice.

Today is the last official day of summer and I'm ready - bring on the FALL!

Last year some dear friends of mine attended and along with some other connections, I decided this year it was Smoke Farm or bust! I had to go and participate, even though I missed the deadline as an artist while I was away in on my Ireland residency. I've already got some schemes scheming for next year though!
Steve Leroux's Viam Saxa was soon lovingly referred to as the "Ewok Village". One of my favorites!

There was also this breathtaking woven grass world made by Sara Kavage & Adria Garcia. Walking slowly through it during the heat of a summery afternoon was otherworldly. Especially when one finds the below scene on the other side...

And if all this wasn't enough to whet your whistle for joining me next year, I'll leave you this evening with this lovely little snippet:

*Caution - artful nudity!

It is no secret that I deeply love stop motion animation.
And black ink.

But when those two are combined? Oh my.

So when I came across this video of I Want it Back by Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra ... well... I swooned. Major thumbs up to Director Jim Batt.
I immediately wanted to go out and play.

A dreamlike forest guide. Directions for spirits.
This is currently my favorite section of Suze Wolf's piece out at Rootbound: Heaven & Earth

I've been Summer-ing. And yes, that is an official word. I say so. Balancing a blend of work, art, play, & long winded chats over BBQs. Indeed - It's August in the Pacific NW and there is nowhere I would rather be.

I've been thinking heavily on my sense of Place and Home and Community - winding myself up for a new series of artworks - so it was a sheer pleasure to stumble across this essay by Wallace Stegner:
http://www.makingwisconsinhome.org/uploads/media/The_Sense_of_Place_essay.pdf

After being somewhat rootless this past year (and throughout my life in general), I've recently begun to feel the shoots sifting down down deep. The anchor was cast even before I set off for Ireland.
The shores of Puget Sound. Seattle to the Pacific. At what point did my roots take hold here?

I've got a pretty exciting new project on the brain and in the sketching phase - can't wait to share it with you but this one is going to take awhile. Let's just say it deals with this sense of home I've been flirting around with for ages. And perhaps some plywood on hinges... intrigued?

In the meantime I can share with you this lovely little indulgence of a side-project - Star Wars All-Stars! I decorated these bad boys for Project Fiver - a fundraiser for the DragonCon Charity Auction with all proceeds going to ALS, which I have a personal connection to. Totally worthy of busting out the old Rekoj line work and fabric paints for! Is it terrible that all I want to do now is kick back with Return of the Jedi?

on Being Deliberate

IMAG0965, originally uploaded by Sara Everett.

The swing of things has begun to return. Yet there still is this sense of satisfied completeness. This trip was something I needed to do for such a long time and now that I'm back I feel I'm truly "back". Not really wistful or yearning to still be in a dream-like residency, but eager to push forward. I'm finding myself in continual little attempts to keep the flavor of my time at Clo Ceardlann however while I transition back into "normal" life:
Waking up slow, sipping tea constantly, journaling my dreams and taking moments to watercolor.
But it runs deeper. Somewhere along the lines of interaction with artists I met: Ian Joyce, Oona Hyland, Eoin Mac Lochlainn, Nuala ni Fhlathuin, Bil Fleming... I ignited a spark to dig deep. To plant my heels into the roots of my vision and speak my voice with more deliberateness. With a honed sense of what my art wants to say.
I picked up an appreciation for working slower. There was a 20x30" wood block carving took me several weeks of carving a little piece of it each day until my arm was tired. It seemed for a time that I never would finish it. But then it was done. The pure satisfaction of running my fingers across it's grooves and lines was bliss. And the printing of it spawned a series.
I'm thinking in patterns now. In the happiness of long projects and the limitlessness of three dimensions and unrestrained media. I can better appreciate the connections now between a thumbed through, dog-eared stack of books, the ramblings of my scrawled journal pages, conversations I have and the little inspirations of daily life. It all circles around into artwork.
A continuous, self-sustaining circle of refining and honing. Each time I think I've completed an answer with my artwork only more questions appear. The only thing to do is to keep pushing.

Artwork From Afar

I am back. After what feels like only a few days.
But it was weeks and weeks.
So far, words fail me even though I wrote pages upon pages in my journal.
I travelled far and wide... and took many pictures.
Most of the journey is up on my Flickr stream.
Hopefully I'll settle in, process and tell you all about it soon.

Welcome to the Neighborhood
"The Wild Called, Will Call Again and Wants to Speak with You" was the title of a small little intuitive artwork I made some years ago. Here in the wilds of Donegal nestled at the foot of Mount Errigal surround by an expanse of bogland, sheep fields and roofless old stone cottages that phrase has come to mind.

I think I finally answered the call. Not a moment too soon either.

The journey to get here was a long but fulfilling one. The road I travelled looped from Seattle to New York and then over to Dublin. A few days exploring the urban streets and places I had only read about and then it was onwards to the little medieval town of Kilkenny where I saw a superb art exhibit in the basement of a castle and met a master chocolatier.

From Kilkenny the route turned west through artful Limerick and into a day's pause in the village of Doolin. By far the best sunset walk of the whole trip winding my way up towards the Cliffs of Moher followed by the most incredible and talented session of music I had yet to experience. I was sad to leave the following morning but my boat had been booked and would leave without me if I had lingered. So onto the boat to the largest of the Aran Islands: Inishmor of the horse drawn carts and the gimmicky but somehow genuine tour bus drivers and a personal pilgrimage to an ancient sacred site: Dún Aonghasa where the half circle fort embraces the cliff edge. The pouring down rain ensured a moment with the place all to myself - a small miracle in itself where I belted my Thanks to the sea and Universe. So in awe of actually being here.

Back to the mainland after that and into Galway for walks and watercolors while staying at my now favorite and artsy B&B - Kilcullen House. (If you're ever in Galway...) The strange coincidence of a friend of mine having had spent a summer working in that very B&B (unbeknowest to me when I booked I swear!) just added to the charm.

From Galway I bid farewell to urban and caught a bus going north north north. And here I be finally - after 10 years of wanting and Co. Donegal does not disappoint. The beauty of this place is heart achingly expansive. Rolling turf and mist shrouded mountains. Tiny roads and sheep spotted green.

And as if that wasn't enough I also happen to be staying in a place with full unbridled access to an incredible print shop in a dream-like family community. Cló Ceardlann na gCnoc is everything I imagined it to be and more.

This is place with unreliable Internet however so I fear I've had quite the trouble getting my current pictures uploaded. For now you will just have to feast your eyes on my Flickr page which is shot full of images from the journey.

There. I said it. I've alluded to it here but have yet to outright tell you about it. I was protecting the news like a precious secret not because I had to but because I didn't really believe it was true. Not really... But now I'm mere hours away from a flight to Dublin so I better start believing.
You see - it was over ten years ago now that I was supposed to go and I did not. The reasons no longer matter. What does matter is that it has become one of my life regrets. One of the few.
So in recognition of this I applied for the one artist residency I could find nearby where I was supposed to go back in college. Co. Donegal spans the nw corner of Ireland and is somewhat isolated and not as touristed. It also is still counted as a gaeltacht (gaelic speaking) region.
This residency was such a "pie in the sky" that I never truly expected to get it. When I did get it I could barely talk about it. That is how magical it was to me.
Now I am finally going and I'm way past overdue for speaking of it here. But I believe my silence has been necessary. The mere preparations for this trip have been healing. And all the funny little synchronicities have just confirmed for me that I'm on the right path.
A good friend of mine made an interesting point about it all:
That the trauma of ten years ago was necessary to shape me into who I am today. And that perhaps it was necessary for me to travel now instead of back then because truly I was not yet ready.
Now. Today and in this moment with two hours to go:
I am ready.

Today is my birthday!

I pretty much spent the weekend celebrating. Which was rad.

Really, I should have been getting ready for my soon-to-depart trip... but there was an afternoon in Kitsap with a dear friend, a fantastic CoCA opening, a superb bbq party and an outing to Full Tilt. Who could get anything done with all that?

I like to use this blog as a space to capture little bits and things that inspire me. Perhaps I should give printerest a try?
Last night while out and about I sparked on monotypes by Lynn Brofsky (getting excited for my upcoming printmaking residency!) Pictured above is "Trophy" which was so softly rendered I was thrilled to discover that it was a monotype.
I also deeply fell for "Sky" by Nichole DeMent. Layered encaustic but what snagged me was just how much of the wood grain showed through. Gave me chills!
And over at Wallflower in West Seattle RobRoy Chalmers had a great new "Sporazan Swarm" installed.
What took me by surprise however were the drawings on paper by Misha Huntting at Twilight. Pictured above was my favorite, "A Fitting or a Fitting End". These portraits sparked me so much that I had to come home and draw myself!
Hooray for that indeed.

In the midst of all the Ireland residency preparations it was wonderful to take a break to the Oregon Coast with my folks. We had a lovely time wandering through Cannon Beach galleries and studios for the Spring Art Unveiling. Some of my favorite discoveries were the large scale floral silk paintings by Anne Anderson and the electric light glow of Michael Orwick's work. Just stunning.

And of course glassblowing. Because my Dad LOVES it. And where else would you rather be in the midst of a spring shower?

This afternoon I set out on a mission to the Pike Place Market to practice being a tourist. Or attempt to.

You see, I enjoy walking the Market many days of the week as I pass through on my way to work. I often hurridly dash through at lunchtime to my favorite eateries. I've gotten quite good over the years at the 10 minute in and out, crowd-dodging soup run.

But I realized the other day that I hardly ever take pictures of the market. Maybe it is because I see these scenes every day. Maybe it is because I'm always dashing around throngs of tourists taking pictures. Either way it occured to me that for as much as I dearly love the Market, it is sorely lacking in representation here.

So I turned on the muse and set out during a rare not-quite-hungry-yet lunch break to wander slowly and take some pictures. I made it one HALF block in before my muse got a better idea and pulled me up a sun soaked wooden stairway to Lisa Harris Gallery. Much to my own shame I had actually never been up there before. I had perused their website. I had seen their show announcement cards come in to the office but alas, had never gone. Always too busy practicing that crowd-dodging soup beeline I suppose.

I'm glad I finally did and it was a nice moment indeed for they were installing the new series of work by Terry Furchgott. This image barely does colors justice. Such rich saturation and electric bright juxtopositions. I fell in love with this piece so was quite happy to find it on Terry's website.

Girl in a Blue Dress by Terry Furchgott

"Girl in a Blue Dress"

Thank you muse - you never truly lead me astray.

Artwork Bought, Artwork Sold

I was floored, shocked and heart-spark thrilled to discover that over the weekend I sold TEN paintings!

Hanging my work up at Osteria da Primo seemed just like a mutually beneficial nice thing - they needed fresh artwork and I had a bunch that just came from CORE. Rather than have it all cooped up in storage why not have it out in the world? I expected to sell one or two maybe here and there throughout the summer and that's it.

What a hugely nice confirmation that yes, folks DO like my work. Maybe I should know that by now but I have to admit that I was feeling a bit burnt out after my last solo show. So much work and then a month exhibition is over so quickly.

My energy and faith is renewed! Methinks that when I return from my upcoming residency I will have a focus on getting even more smaller scale affordable artworks out in the world. Hello there Etsy shop!

In other fun news I will soon be the proud owner of this lovely woodblock print by fellow CORE artist John Smither. Cheers for this new addition to my own small collection! Slowly but surely I want to limit the amount of my own work on my walls. It's a good thing that I happen to know a bunch of great artists!
