Their parents forgot!

I gave them my extras but as we approach the really hot parts of summer, water bottles for the whole family should be the last thing you pull out of the refrigerator when you're going to an outdoor activity.

As an adult, are you drinking 32 oz of water/day? You need hydration too. A person runs the risk of heat stroke if they don't hydrate before, during and after activities. And yes, Gatorade will hydrate well (and it tastes better too. Give them frequent water breaks. It also gives them a chance to catch their breath: do you know child that will stop for a second because he/she is tired? They just want to go go go.

But occasionally a member of the team would show up without a bottle of water. So I've developed a habit, whether I'm coaching or not, of throwing an extra couple of bottles of water in my sports knapsack and handing them out to kids who forgot to bring one from home. both kids and parents who forget really appreciate it.

If you would like to add your own child safety tip, email it by CLICKING HERE.

To subscribe to this feed and be notified whenever this blog is updated, click on the "XML" icon:

Pregnant? People often carelessly throw garbage onto the field while walking across it which can injure players. It consists of collecting data that can be used by law enforcement to locate and identify children if they get lost or are abducted.

There are several components:

1) Toothprint - the child bites into a softened wafer-like material. In doing so they leave an impression of their teeth and saliva/DNA, which can be used by scent tracing tracking dogs and law enforement for identification.

2) Video - a brief video is taken to capture a child's speaking habits, appearance, and mannerisms.

3) Fingerprints - fingerprints are the oldest and reliable methods of identification

Sponsored by the Freemasons, 15 states have adapted this program. It is endorsed by many law enforement agencies, including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and several state dental societies and teaching groups.

For more information including contacts to set up an event in your area, CLICK HERE.

If you would like to add your own child safety tip, email it to Safe Child by CLICKING HERE.

BOOK MARK THIS SITE for regular updates on safety and health tips for children.

If Your Child Is Being Bullied

If you learn your child is being bullied, you may immediately want to protect your child and confront the aggressor. You may feel embarrassed and want your child to toughen up, to get in there and fight back. You may feel helpless yourself. None of these responses are helpful.
Get as much information as you can about what has happened. Avoid blaming anyone, including the bullying child or children. Look at your own child's behavior and style of interacting. Ask yourself what you know about your child and how you can turn the immediate situation around.
If you are going to get in touch with the parents of a bullying child, remember that they will probably feel defensive. Keep in mind that your goal is to have a safe and nurturing environment for all of the children, not to escalate an already difficult situation. (For tips on talking to parents of bullies, see The Safe Child Book.)
For your own children, there are several steps you can take.
• discuss alternatives to responding to bullies.
• don't react, walk away, get help if pursued
• agree with the bully, saying "You're right." and walking away.
• be assertive.
Role-play - just as in prevention of child abuse, role-play is what makes the skills real. Actually walk through situations and have your child practice different responses. Discuss prevention techniques such as staying with other kids. Do not get involved with bullies in any kind of interchange. Don't take it personally, it's really the bullies problems that are causing the situation, not you.

If you would like to add your own child safety tip, email it to Safe Child by CLICKING HERE.

To subscribe to this excellent feed and be notified whenever this blog is updated, click on the "XML" icon:

School Is Back In Session:

PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY!!!!

If you would like to add your own child safety tip, email it to Safe Child by CLICKING HERE.

To subscribe to this feed and be notified whenever this blog is updated, click on the "XML" icon:

Stranger Safety DVD

Julie Clark, founder of The Baby Einstein Company, and John Walsh, host of America’s Most Wanted, have created The Safe Side to give parents simple, fun and interesting ways to discuss difficult topics with their children. Whenever we link to an article/site we anticipate that that destination article will around for a while. Some are up at their web address for less than anticipated. For that reason, sometimes when you click on an article link you'll get the dreaded "Cannot find this page" or there is a chance that you'll be pointed to something that has absolutely nothing to do with children. For that reason we ask 1) for your understanding if you can't find what you're looking for and 2) send me an email if a link is "broken" and I'll remove that reference.

Thanks for your help

If you would like to add your own child safety tip or report a broken link, email it to Safe Child by CLICKING HERE.
