Starting out five years ago as eye-lined, black-haired kids playing in an acclaimed shoegaze band, The Vera Violets have returned as masters of darkness with the band's latest self-titled effort. Never forgetting the band's fuzzed-out, echo droned roots, The Vera Violets burst from the rabbit hole once again wearing the cloak of shoegaze. Like a Dr. Seuss story twists nuances of rhyme and alliteration, the band's newest album turns gradients of gray to black, with brilliant bursts of lullaby lights. After a transcendent one-two punch in the first tracks, the third song, "Dreams of Zena" is essentially a love letter featuring a guitar solo reminiscent of a dream alarm clock. It's the kind alarm that takes you into another dream. What follows are tracks synthesizing The Vera Violets past and present, offering the kind of fuzz and buzz you can only get from a band that equally loves Shoegaze, Psychedelia and Rock N Roll. Now a three-piece, the band's most cohesive effort could not have been without mates Neal McCamis: guitar, bass, synthesizer and back-up vocals; and Bryan Thompson: drums and bass. Jonathan Beadle is the lead singer, producer and also played guitar, bass, synthesizer and tambourine on the self-titled release.

Screen Vinyl Image Mesmerized me, and blew me away with their live performance, this past Saturday night, at Pianos in downtown Manhattan. I only recently discovered this band. I knew I had to listen up when I saw Screen Vinyl Image was playing a gig with 2 of my favorite New York City bands, Audn and The Vandelles. Serendipitously, a friend sent me a preview of their new album, Interceptors, thinking of me when he heard it. He thought it would be my kind of music. Turns out he was spot on like nobody's business...

I have seen this band three times in recent months, so it is overdue that I write about The Vandelles, the ex-California-Coast kids, current Brooklyn darlings, whom I am thrilled to call fellow New Yorkers. Their gig at Pianos in downtown Manhattan showed me once again why I love this band so much. The Vandelles exude coolness. It's really as simple as that.

big weekend at Vanishing Point Dec 19 and 20

On friday it's The Soundscapes(last minute addition)28 Degrees Taurus, Dead leaf Echo and Her Vanished Grace.
The Sounscapes kill it, that's all i have to say and that's all you need to know. they rule. i've seen 28 degrees once at pianos back in March. i was quite entertained for the first 20 minutes but they played a bit to long for my taste and i forgot about the tunes i liked. lots of good energy though. DLE are favorites round these parts and never fail to impress. 2009 should be their year. Her Vanished Grace is and old school LMG favorite. we did one of our first shows with them way back when. also a good time and they pump out the albums like no one i know. solid band, totally worth showing up early for.

On Saturday it's Project Skyward, The Invisible Kid, and Screen Vinyl Image and Brian from Elika DJing.
Project Skywards' return to the live scene the last few months has been going quite well. with an entirely new line up; new singer and guitarist, they've been working out some material for a new album. things are looking bright after quite some time away. The Invisible Kid (aka The Danimal to those who know him well) rocks it hard, with his Ride-esqe guitar and his big Madchester beats. always a crowd pleaser. SVI, what can you about them, they're "a little loud" like Jesus got "a little crucified".(brightestyoungthings.com) Jake and Kim are about the raddest people we know. always loud, always good.

The Antiques - Awake

Washington DC’s The Antiques specialise in their own highly stylised sound. Essentially an alt-rock four-piece, they augment their sound with occasional guest vocals, brass and swathes of sombre organ. It’s the latter, I feel, that renders the sound of The Antiques utterly unique. Themes of regret, bitterness and fatigue run right through the core of this record, each swaddled in a blanket of Wurlitzer keys. If you know Joy Division, and in particular their track ‘The Eternal’ from Closer, you will already have some clue as to what you might expect from The Antiques. Even the vocals have that same netherworld appeal – vocoded, anguished and lost in the mix.

As a follow up to their debut full length album Sewn With Stitches, Washington DC based lo-fi rock outfit The Antiques have just released a brand new long player, titled Awake, through artist run label Safranin Sound. Our original feature of the haunting loveliness this band exudes happened well over a year and a half ago [July 2007 review + download], so when we received our copy of the latest album last week, an immediate listen was in order. What we found was a gorgeous collection of distressed fairytales set to an ever-building tension that instantly reminded us how much of a dark mood an effective accompaniment of organ can bring to the surface. To have a listen to additional tracks and find out where to purchase the new album, you can visit The Antiques MySpace page as well as The Antiques website. For those who live close enough, or feel the need to plan a quality road trip in the near future, the next live performance will take place November 21 at Kalamazoo, Michigan venue Dino's Rock Room.

Not What Happens is SafeAsHome's first full-length album. Composed of 11 tracks, it plays like a flow of disconnected memories, a random series of photo slides projected through the distortionary lens of long-lost childhoods or uncertain futures. From raging guitar epics to delicate, fleeting moments of introspective electronics, it is an album of fertile contradictions.

Pop-song structure persistently competes with gritty texture. Soaring melodies are overwhelmed and lost in phases of intense sonic density. Suspended synth and vocal lines are set against grinding riffs and noise, in bittersweet moments of dream versus reality.

Not What Happens is the difficulty in expressing anything more than the Unimportant. It is sudden starts and abrupt endings. It is haunted by the uneasy comfort of nostalgia, and by the frustration with what remains unresolved. It is the derelict spaces of disappointment through expectancy, of loss via pursuit.

The album itself is graced with the stunning, sprawling artwork of Roberto Calbucci, the depth and substance of which mirrors the sound's myriad of layers. Both seem to be questioning the extent to which detail is not what is concealed, but is what draws away from the greater picture, itself hiding in plain sight.
