Profile

Uploaded avatar, added bio, favourite song, the now ubiquitous cover photo (back in my day we called this a background) and a test post. Much like Facebook each of these actions becomes it’s own post or tile.

Now, the interesting part here is how I got to this screen in the first place. I scrolled upwards (by dragging down on my MacBook Air’s trackpad). This came across to me as shocking and unexpected. Maybe it’s bad design, maybe it’s good design. It’s easy to debate whether or not something is objectively good, but this caught me by surprise. MySpace is definitely trying hard to stand out here.

Posts

I thought this screen looked alright-ish but I instantly gravitated towards that white box we see at the bottom. Being the only thing of a different colour on the page, I kind of assumed it was a text field. Obviously once you’ve had time to process the layout of this particular page it becomes obvious the text box is transparent.

Images

The new Myspace is beautiful. Massive, high resolution fully dynamic images make the new Myspace an amazing platform visually. One of the really awesome things is that you can put songs to pictures. Images are no longer just images- on the new Myspace they are an experience. If you’ve got a photo album from a party you went to, you can add music from that party, so they people that look at these photos get a really goot feeling of the party.

You can see the latest news about your favorite music from the Discover page, an awesome concept that reminds me of the awesome Undrip iPhone app. The news is displayed with full screen, high definition images.

Music

Similar to Spotify, it’s got a really nice music player down the bottom of the page that is always sitting there doing it’s thing. You can create your playlists and follow bands. You can subscribe to other peoples playlists and create radio channels that anyone can share. This has been built for artists. They can add details about upcoming gigs and events and the new Myspace makes it really easy to share these events with friends

Overall

This appears to have taken the cool things from a bunch of platforms and put them all in one place. It’s as visually appealing as Pinterest and has the cool sharing aspects of Pinterest. It’s got the high definition that reminds me of Vimeo. It has a private messaging system similar to Facebook, something that a lot of people love about Facebook. Add that with the music that Myspace has always had and you’ve got an amazing platform. I’m looking forward to seeing Myspace kick some serious arse in the social network world.
