He has an excellent blog entitled Meditations on the Law. We took the time to ask Dougald a few questions that will hopefully encourage you to check out his blog. Enjoy!

Tell us a little about yourself:
I was born in Fayetteville, NC and grew up in a Christian home. My father was a pastor. I lived in Fayetteville for about fourteen years and then we moved to Lumberton, NC for four years. This was followed by a move to Nashville, NC outside of Rocky Mount. After a year of living with my parents and attending community college I came to Southeastern to finish my BA. I came here in 1998 and since then I've earned two degrees and I begin my third degree in January (Ph.D. Old Testament). I attend First Baptist Durham where I teach. I also co-lead mission trips to Central Asia with fellow SEBTS blogger Wesley Handy.

I guess I should also mention that I work at the SEBTS library in the reference section.

Tell us a little about your family:
I'm single. My mother and father still reside in Nashville, NC. My sister, Lisa, lives in Rocky Mount.

Tell us a little about your walk with the Lord:
I became a Christian at 7 years old. I grew in the lord during this time. I was even called a 'Christian Nerd' at school growing up. Around the age of twelve I felt a pull towards ministry/doing something more with my life. I ran from that for about seven years. With the move from Lumberton to Nashville I went on my first mission trip to Cherokee, NC with my father's new church. It changed my whole perspective on things. When I came to SEBTS I wanted to participate in missions. My first chance came in 2001 when I went to Kazakhstan with a church in Raleigh. In 2002 I took a J-term class called, "Linguistics of Turkic Languages." Through this class God gave me a passion to work in Central Asia. In 2005 I was able to help lead a mission team from our church to Kazakhstan and our church is very supportive of our overall vision there.

On the more personal note: I'm currently learning how to put to death a murmuring heart. Also, I'm learning what it means to truly understand that to be in the presence of God is better than anything else. It is one thing to say that, it is another thing to live it.

How long have you been blogging?
About a year and a half.

Why did you decide to start blogging?
Nathan Finn. :) Actually, I like to spew out my opinions so I thought it was a good avenue for that. My reason for blogging has changed throughout and now I am more focused on biblical/devotional type stuff. I suppose I'll get academic every now and again in the future.

How did you choose the name Meditations on the Law?
Since the Old Testament tells us in two key places (Josh. 1 and Psalm 1) to meditate on the law, I figured it was an appropriate title for a blog concerning the Old Testament.

Is there a primary theme or passion associated with your blog?
The Old Testament, but I seem to talk more about missions and other things. I hope to write a dissertation that deals with the OT and missions so there is a thin line between the two topics for me.

How much time a week do you put into your blogging?
It depends. But, for each post I may spend an hour or more if I am putting a lot of effort into it. Of course, I'm only limiting my answer to the writing process. I research things periodically and if I count that it would probably be a little more time devoted to blogging.

Do you or your readers have a favorite post or series of posts?
Voltaire's Candide. I don't know if it is the favorite of my readers but it is the most read post. I think its been read over 600 times.

Personally my favorite is the series on Reflection on Central Asia. It includes a discussion on Mutual Discipleship. Which, come to find out, is a term used in Feminist's circles. We'll have to find a new term I suppose.

If you could give us a list of several blogs you regularly read and enjoy, what would be on it?
The Fullness of Time
Missions Issues
Mission Driven Life
SBC Witness
SBC Impact
The Assembling of the Church

These would be the ones that I read the most. I think only two of these aren't connected to SEBTS.

Thanks Dougald!
<img width='1' height='1' He has been diagnosed with pneumonia and he is in a weakened condition. As of Monday morning he was stable, and he was breathing a little better. He continues to fight valiantly and his wife Cindy remains faithfully at his side. The situation is serious and so let me ask you even now to begin praying for Russ, Cindy and those who are caring for him. It is a blessing to have a Christian family that can pray for and support one another.

Danny Akin

Please keep Dr. Bush in your prayers during this time.

The Golden Compass :: SEBTS Opinions

Apparently the Golden Compass hasn't lived up to its hype. His quote appeared under the subheading "Anti-Tithing in the Classroom" and was found in the following paragraph:

The anti-tithing movement has found support in some unlikely places: theologically conservative divinity schools and church pulpits. At Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., professor Andreas Kostenberger challenges tithing in classes on the New Testament. He teaches that if you add up all taxes paid by the ancient Israelites, they exceed 10%, and that in the New Testament there's no percentage rule. He says pastors perpetuate the 10% figure out of "pragmatism, tradition and ignorance, quite frankly."
I know I was in more than one conversation about last week about giving, tithing and what Dr. Köstenberger's statement really meant.

Dr. Köstenberger responded to the quote on his blog today in post entitled Christian Stewardship and Giving as an Act of Worship. In this post, he clarifies the context around the quote, his objections with WSJ prior to it being published, and gives a response to the misconstrued interpretations of his quote that have arisen within the last week. I encourage you to read it if you had questions of your own.

Featured Blogger: Alan Knox

This month's featured blogger is Alan Knox, a Ph.D. student at Southeastern. He has an excellent blog entitled The Assembling of the Church. We took the time to ask Alan a few questions that will hopefully encourage you to check out his blog. Enjoy!

Background Information:
Tell us a little about yourself
I’m 40 years old. I was born in Alabama and lived there until 8 years ago (except for college). I went to college at Georgia Tech and have degrees in Electrical Engineering. I love computers, reading, and spending time with people.

Tell us a little about your family
I’ve been married to Margaret for 19 years. We met in the fourth grade. We have two children – Jeremy (almost 14) and Miranda (10). We also have two dogs – Lucy and Aggie.

Does your family read your blog?
My wife reads my blog, and my children read if there’s something about them. Actually, to be completely honest, Margaret likes reading the comments. Yes, that means that she likes to read what other people have to say more than she likes to read what I have to say. 

Tell us a little about your walk with the Lord
God saved me when I was about 10. I wish I could say that I grew in grace and stature, but I didn’t. In fact, for many years I considered myself an agnostic. I never stopped believing in God, but I didn’t know exactly what that meant. Almost 15 years ago, I began to be discipled by several different men, each teaching me how to walk with God, both by their words and their example. Today, I try to walk with God in everything that I do. I recognize that I rely completely on him for growth and obedience.

About his Blog:
How long have you been blogging?
I’ve been blogging since March 2006.

Why did you decide to start blogging?
I decided to start blogging to aid me in my studies. In May 2006, I began the Ph.D. program at SEBTS. I’m majoring in biblical theology with a focus on ecclesiology. Blogging gives me an outlet for much of my studies, to help me think through and discuss different ideas. But, this is not simply about theoretical discussions. I also practice much of what I discuss.

How did you choose the name The Assembling of the Church?
Well, I’m studying the purpose for the meeting of the church in Scripture. The title reflects that focus. I usually blog about the church. Other blog names that I wanted to use were already taken.

How much time a week do you put into your blogging?
The amount of time that I spend blogging changes from week to week. I write fast. So, it doesn’t take me as much time to think through these issues and write about them as you might think.

It appears that you spend a lot of time studying and thinking through your posts. How did you process this information before you started blogging?
I spend a lot of time reading – reading Scripture, reading for Ph.D. seminars, and “fun” reading. Usually, by the time I write a blog post about an issue, I’ve discussed it with various friends and family members. Sometimes, I simply write descriptive posts about things that have happened. Many of my ideas come from interaction with other bloggers. I especially appreciate commenters on my blog, even when they disagree with my views. I’ve learned a lot from interacting with them.

Do you or your readers have a favorite post or series of posts?
The most read post that I’ve written is called “The Church or the Organization” with a post called “Summary – Should elders/pastors be paid a salary?” quickly gaining ground.

If you could give us a list of several blogs you regularly read and enjoy, what would be on it?
I have too many blogs in my blog reader to recommend just one or two. I guess the ones that I would recommend are on the sidebar of my blog.

Walter Hooper Interview on Faith and Culture Website

Here's a link you may not have picked up on in your feed readers:
Dr. Michael Travers recently interviewed Walter Hooper.

Information on the C.S. The site itself was originally started by Tony Kummer in July of 2007. We are thankful to him for his effort to initiate such a site. There is no doubt we would not be here if he hadn't started it. In December of 2007, Glenn Ansley, a student at SEBTS took over project for Tony. If you have any question or comments, we would love to hear from you.

About Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Identity
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary is an institution of higher learning and a Cooperative Program ministry of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Confession
Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary affirms the Bible as the authoritative Word of God. Our faculty and staff have come from around the nation and the globe to equip students for work in the Kingdom.

The school offers the master of divinity degree with several specializations as a first professional degree for Christian ministers. The seminary also offers several related master of arts programs.

Postgraduate level work includes a professional doctorate (doctor of ministry) and three advanced research degrees (master of theology, doctor of education and doctor of philosophy).

The traditional master of divinity program is designed to prepare pastors, missionaries and other Christian workers for a life of effective kingdom service. The ministry track supports both academic and practical ministry interests. Within three academic years of full-time attendance, the program prepares Christian ministers for Kingdom service by enabling them to gain a basic understanding of Scripture, theology and the Christian worldview.

The master of arts program is designed to equip persons for ministry in each respective specialization either vocationally or as lay persons in a church or para-church organization. The program is designed to be completed in a minimum of two academic years beginning with a fall semester.

Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary advanced degree programs equip serious students for a high level of professional competence in ministry. The programs provide opportunities for advanced study in interdisciplinary courses, seminars and clinical settings and combines academic study and practical application under faculty and field supervisors.

Students will find this postgraduate training to be both academically challenging and professionally rewarding. Each of the advanced degree programs has different eligibility and degree requirements. To house the Seminary, the Convention purchased the campus of Wake Forest College in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Trustees, elected by the Convention, secured a charter and adopted the Abstract of Principles as the Seminary's Articles of Faith. Next, they elected the Seminary's first president, Dr. Sydnor L. Stealey.

Stealey Presidency (1950-1963)

In the Fall of 1951, Southeastern began classes. Opening day, September 12, was attended by 85 students and three faculty members. The Seminary met in the classroom building now known as Appleby Hall. At first, the Seminary offered only a basic theological program leading to a Bachelor of Divinity degree.

In 1956, when Wake Forest College moved to its new location in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Southeastern inherited the rest of the Wake Forest campus which covered five hundred acres and consisted of more than twelve major buildings. The number of faculty members and students grew and plans to remodel and renovate buildings were initiated. In 1957, Southeastern instituted a summer school session.

In 1958, the Seminary achieved recognition from the American Association of Theological Schools, now known as the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.

In 1963, after thirteen years of presidential service, Dr. Stealey retired and Dr. Olin T. Binkley was elected president. Enrollment stood at 575 and the school had 28 faculty members.

Binkley Presidency (1963-1974)

Under Dr. Binkley's leadership the Seminary continued the renovation program begun by Dr. Stealey. Four outdated buildings were removed, and thirteen new buildings were constructed and paid for all during Dr. Binkley's eleven year administration.

Dr. Binkley also guided major academic changes: the general curriculum was revised; the Bachelor of Divinity degree became the Master of Divinity degree; the Master of Religious Education and the Doctor of Ministry degrees were implemented, bringing the total number of degree programs to seven. Furthermore, he inaugurated the annual Alumni Giving Program before his retirement in 1974.

Lolley Presidency (1974-1987)

Southeastern's third president, Dr. W. Randall Lolley, was elected in 1974. Enrollment had reached 663 with 24 elected faculty members. His was an era of progress for the Seminary. The Certificate of Theology was restructured in 1976 and became the Associate of Divinity degree. In 1977, the Emery B. Denny Building which houses the Library was modernized and enlarged. And, in 1978, Southeastern received accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

To meet the needs of an ever-increasing married student population, the Seminary constructed 100 townhouse-style apartments in 1979. Renovation of Lea Laboratory, now known as Broyhill Hall, was begun in 1980. In 1982, the ground floor of Binkley Chapel was transformed into classrooms.

Seminary enrollment peaked at 1,392 in 1983 with a faculty of 36. The modernization of Adams Hall in 1984 provided the Seminary with more classrooms, seminar rooms, an auditorium, and a photography darkroom. The Ledford Center, a $2.5 million complex completed in 1986, provided a gymnasium, snack bar, lounges, meeting rooms, book store, sauna and exercise rooms.

Drummond Presidency (1988-1992)

Dr. Lolley resigned in the Fall of 1987 and was succeeded in 1988 by Dr. Lewis A. Drummond. The Drummond presidency marked a transitional era for Southeastern. Student enrollment declined and a major turnover occurred within the faculty. Nevertheless, Dr. Drummond led in an administrative restructuring of the Seminary in 1988 and in the establishment of the Center for Great Commission Studies in 1991. Reconstruction of the perimeter rock wall, replacement of the brick walkways, and a major refurbishment of administrative and faculty offices also were begun. Southeastern's commitment to biblical inerrancy and to historic Baptist theological principles was made clear during the Drummond years. Several new defining documents such as the Seminary's Faculty Profile and revised Statements of Purpose and Mission were finalized and adopted in 1992.

For the academic year, 1990-1991, the enrollment stood at 784 with 27 elected faculty members. President Drummond retired in the Spring of 1992.

Patterson Presidency (1992-2003)

Trustees elected Dr. Paige Patterson as the fifth President of the institution in 1992. The Patterson presidency was marked by rapid growth. Southeastern's enrollment grew from 623 in the 1991-1992 school year to more than 2,000 in 1999-2000. Curriculum revisions in 1994 brought about a more traditional theological degree plan for most Seminary students.

In the Fall of 1994 Southeastern Baptist Theological College was established by the Trustees of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Classes in the baccalaureate program began in January of 1995. In addition, the Associate of Divinity program became part of the College curriculum. In April 2000 by action of the Board of Trustees, the name of the college was changed to Southeastern College at Wake Forest.

Innovative new seminary programs in Counseling and Church Planting were begun in 1995. A Doctor of Philosophy degree was also inaugurated in 1995. The academic emphasis, however, has not overshadowed the renewed focus on missions and evangelism. 1998 brought new programs in Women's Studies and Advanced Biblical Studies, as well as an expanded undergraduate program. 1999 brought new programs in Christian School Administration, North American Church Planting, and an advanced degree in Theological Studies.

In July of 2003, Dr. Patterson stepped down as Southeastern's president, and Bart Neal was elected as interim president as the Board of Trustees conducted a worldwide search for Southeastern's sixth president.

Akin Presidency (2004- )

That search ended on January 15, 2004, when the Board unanimously elected Dr. Daniel L. Akin as president. Dr. Akin, who previously served at Southeastern as Assistant Professor of Theology and Dean of Students from 1992-1996, was Vice President for Academic Administration / Dean of the School of Theology at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, a position he held until his return to Southeastern.

Contact Us

<div style="float: left;
