T.L. Hately (1816-1867) - A Biographical Note

Thomas Legerwood Hately was renowned in his day not only as a vocalist of great ability but also as the precentor of the General Assembly at the time of the Disruption, a sounder of melody in a time of discord. He had a great love for the Psalm singing traditions, both English and Gaelic. Indeed one of his most lasting legacies was the noting down of the old Gaelic long tunes of mainland Gaeldom which differed significantly from the Gaelic style of Psalm singing which was practiced on the western seaboard and in the islands. His other legacy is the portfolio of original compositions which he left to posterity, including the majestic anthemic air named Glencairn. Admittedly as I had heard the tune in my youth it did not really win my ear, but when heard in the form which it was always intended to bear, that of 4 part harmony, the tune is one that is both stirring and majestic.
