Gear Talk : meee-ow!

brian and i were riding around yesterday and i was wearing my black cat style helmet ears. we rode alongside an rv with a dog hanging out of the window. he started barking at me like crazy! was it the ears? was he pissed off that some cat got to ride her own scooter while he was stuck in the back of an rv? i dont know. i do wish we had a camera on us. i think aerostitch may have appreciated a picture of this dog trying to kill me and the look of terror on my face!

many, many thanks to jeff and the folks over at vespa st. louis for putting on an amazing fundraiser for a great cause!
there was a really good turnout and i believe all local clubs were represented. very nice raffle items (especially the awesome pink helmet--whoo hoo!), good eats, sheila working her patch magic, etc. i think a lot of money was raised which is great news.

it's also just so nice to see our little community coming together to help one of our own. kinda warms your heart, don't it?

hang in there, mj. we're all thinking of you and a lot of love was sent your way yesterday!!!

Newbies Lounge : need advice/opinions on buying scooter

Thanks to all of you for your replies. Sorry for teh delay in replying myself, but for some reasons, I did not get any emails telling me that new rplies had been posted.

As for why a 49cc: well, I would like more (and I will pass my license this coming year), but I am taking into account thegf factor. She is worried about anything with 2 wheel and and engine. So I will start with a 50cc and make my way up with her!

Storage: the budget I put is only for teh scooter (and is flexible). I am planing on paying for a storage during winter. I live in a building, and have a parking spot in a garage. My car is already there, but I prefer to avoid any "fights" by not leaving the scooter all year rounbd in the garage (and ina corner!)

Sccoter itself: I am too worried about chinese branded. I am sure they are fine, if I am willing and have time to tweak and work on them. I am mostly looking for some ease in the process (buying, servicing ...). but I think I will got a name brand.

My only concern is when buying used, I'll never know who rode it and how they treated their bike (except here, where I am sure all of you took very well care of your rides

I am still looking. I have some preferences, but am not too picky at this stage (I would love a Yamaha zuma from 1996 or before, as I used to ride one when I was a teenager in France!).

I will try to give a call to Bobby and see what he has, and what can be done.

Again, thanks for all of your input. I will do some "shopping" around this week end, and will keep you posted (if you have any input to give me).

unfortunately, a lot of elderly people do fall for this. Some cable network did a piece on this a couple months back; you just feel bad for people who don't know better. The scammers all come from Africa, can't remember which country, but they have these internet 'cafes' where there are 100 guys just sending the spam out hopin for a bite.

Ah, but that's a GS. I'm rebuilding a VBB. Sure, there are tons of advantages to a 10" conversion, but you lose some of the aesthetic of the bike. I really like the way the 8" wheels look. A 10" conversion also adds to the overall cost. I'm already in the doghouse for what I've spent on this rebuild.

My next bike is going to be a GL or a Sprint with a P200 mill. I'll be rockin the 10s on that with a front disk brake for sure.

You can charge off the charger system, if you can get started. A tender won't charge, but merely maintain a full charged battery.

A small trickle charger can be used to get it up to full charge slowly, before starting or attaching the tender. However, the trickle charger isn't an on/off system like the tender. You wouldn't leave it always attached like the tender.

Yes I have got to check it out and here is my first impression.
1. It is my first Scorpion so I really can not compare it to the full face Scorpions helmets.
I had planned on buying one of there helmets when word came out about the new
900.
2. I have been riding with a HJC sy-max which has similar features, modular, built in sun glasses except for the transformer feature of jaw removal which I will probably never use. I did like the HJC but when I checked out the materials used on the interior of the Scorpion wanted to try one.
3. I noticed immediately that I am able to rotate my head easier, for the head check ability. I also noticed that my vision, looking out of the helmet was better, considerably better. The full face jaw actually fits tighter to my face, but still leaves room for the head set I use (http://www.cardowireless.com/scala_rider/), I really like the fit, it is hard to believe I am wearing a full face. The weight of the helmet is a non issue to me.

This is my first impression I will follow up as I get more time riding time.

I got a chance to take one for a little spin yesterday, wow what a nice riding scooter. Just like the GTS 250 and 200 the bike has great balance, high quality fit and finish and fantastic brakes. The scoot has great power from low end to highway speeds. This scoot felt as good on the highway as it does around town. Anyone looking for a high quality scoot should give this one a look. Thanks you to St. Louis Vespa for giving me the opportunity take a spin.

Also anyone looking for a new scooter remember: If you by a new scooter or motorcycle this year, you pay the normal sales tax but are able to deduct it off your year end taxes...
