As the year begins to settle into its quieter moments, many of us find ourselves drawn to light. Candlelight on a dinner table. Holiday lights along familiar streets. The warm glow of home on a cold evening. Light comforts us. It connects us. It reminds us that even in the busiest or most uncertain seasons, there is still beauty and hope to be found.

In this season of reflection and generosity, light becomes more than something we see. It becomes something we share.

Where light grows

For the mothers and children in our program, stability is often the beginning of that light. When a family enters a safe home, begins setting goals, and has access to care and consistent support, the constant weight of stress starts to ease. With that relief comes energy, connection, and the space to imagine a different future.

We see this in many ways. Recently, a mother in our program completed a months-long training cohort that helped her build confidence, refine a business idea, and take real steps toward long-term self-sufficiency. She invited her mentor and our staff to her final presentation and shared how meaningful it felt to be surrounded by people who believed in her. Moments like these reflect what stability makes possible.

We also see light in the small shifts that change the feel of a home. One mother has been working toward a more consistent evening and morning routine for her children. As the house has become calmer at night, mornings have started to feel brighter. The family wakes with a little more ease. These steady moments create something meaningful. When children see light in their home, when they sense their mother gaining energy and confidence, it shapes how they approach the day. The light a mother finds in herself often becomes the light her children carry forward.

There are many moments like these across our community. A mom finding the courage to try something new. A child settling into a healthier rhythm. A family discovering that life feels a little lighter than it did before. Each one is a spark of light that grows from stability and connection.

Light shared during the holidays

The holiday season brings its own kind of brightness at Saint Louise House. Every December, families experience traditions that are joyful, empowering, and rooted in dignity.

Children visit our Holiday Store to choose gifts for their moms. They learn how to wrap them, often proudly carrying their creations out the door with a smile. This is more than a fun activity. It is empowerment. It is the feeling of being able to give back and show love in a meaningful way.

Families also receive gift cards so they can cook their own holiday meals. This gives moms the chance to plan a menu that feels personal and special. It preserves traditions. It restores choice. It creates meaningful memories in their own kitchens.

Volunteers help fulfill wish lists so that every family has gifts to unwrap. These acts of kindness add warmth and joy to the season and remind families that a community stands with them.

We also host a community-wide holiday meal filled with joy, music, family photos, and celebration. It is a moment when families exhale, laugh, and feel part of something bigger than themselves. The room always seems to glow a little brighter on that day.

These traditions are powerful because they honor the dignity of families. They create connection. They allow children and mothers to see themselves as givers as well as recipients of care.

The light you can share

Generosity comes in many forms. Sometimes it looks like a gift to an organization. Sometimes it is a small gesture that brightens a single moment in someone’s day. You may not always see the impact, but light spreads easily.

Here are a few simple ways anyone can share their light this season.

Offer a warm meal
Cook something comforting for a neighbor, a friend, or a family who is navigating a difficult moment.

Check in on someone who is carrying a lot
A message that says “How are you really doing?” can bring unexpected relief.

Give a parent a moment of rest
Offer to read with a child, help with homework, or provide a short break for a caregiver.

Share what you have learned
Words of encouragement, mentorship, or lived wisdom can spark hope for someone who needs it.

Practice patience and presence
Sometimes the greatest gift is simply showing up and listening.

Choose generosity in small ways
A kind note, a cup of coffee, a ride across town, a reminder of care. These moments layer together and create warmth in places it is needed most.

A season filled with possibility

As the year comes to an end, we are reminded that light is both steady and powerful. It reassures. It connects. It opens the door to new beginnings. Every warm meal delivered, every volunteer hour given, every donation made, every encouraging word shared creates a ripple of light that reaches far beyond a single moment.

Your generosity in this season helps families feel steady and supported. It helps mothers breathe easier. It helps children begin each day with confidence. It builds the kind of community where hope can take root and continue to grow.

This season, we are grateful for the light you share with Saint Louise House families. Your kindness shines farther than you know. And because of you, a brighter tomorrow feels within reach.

As the season of gratitude begins, we are reminded that community is more than a feeling. It is something built through care, shared effort, and trust. At Saint Louise House, we see that truth every day. When mothers and children have a stable home, clear goals to work toward, and dependable access to care and resources, something begins to change. The constant weight of stress starts to lift. With that space to breathe, families can begin to connect, to hope, and to grow.

Our model is built on three essential elements: housing, partnership, and services. Together these create conditions that help families reduce stress, strengthen life skills, and build the capacity for responsive relationships.

Responsive relationships are often overlooked because they can seem intangible. But they are the heartbeat of long-term stability. They form when people have enough safety to trust, enough consistency to show up for others, and enough hope to keep trying. They are what make independence sustainable and community real.

True Story: Moms Helping Moms

Just a few weeks ago, one of the newest residents in the program went into labor. Another Saint Louise House mom stepped in right away to help care for her young son and make sure she had the support she needed. Together they reached out to other families and to a mentor from our partners at Friends of the Children, who helped coordinate school pickup and transportation.

What could have been an overwhelming moment became an example of what happens when connection is already in motion. No one planned it. It happened because trust and care have been cultivated intentionally in this community. That is what responsive relationships look like. They are quiet but powerful, built through small acts of kindness and reliability that turn uncertainty into support.

Community Beyond Our Walls

Those relationships extend beyond the families who live at Saint Louise House. Our community of volunteers helps ensure that care and connection are part of every experience here. When a mom is recovering from an illness or welcoming a new baby, volunteers step in to provide meals. When birthdays arrive, they make sure families have something special to celebrate together.

Recently, one of our volunteers, Janeen, signed up to provide every meal for the week that a new mom came home with her baby. Janeen first connected with Saint Louise House years ago, when her student volunteered through a school project. The experience stayed with her, and this year she decided to get involved again.

“I signed up to provide meals because I love cooking and baking, and I wanted to share that joy in a way that could bring comfort to a family,” Janeen shared. “I hope my contributions provide a sense of food security and care for the new mom. Volunteering with Saint Louise House has allowed me to see how staff and families work together to build healthier and more secure environments. It is inspiring to witness.”

Her generosity is one of many examples of how volunteers help weave community into every corner of Saint Louise House. Their care makes it possible for mothers to focus on rest, recovery, and bonding.

Why It Matters

When mothers are walking alone, even everyday challenges can feel impossible. A broken car, a sick child, or an unexpected bill can quickly grow into a crisis. But when families have a network to lean on, those same moments can become opportunities for connection and resilience.

Think about your own life. Who brings you a meal when you are tired? Who picks up your child when you are running late, or listens when you need to talk through something? Those relationships do not remove hardships, but they make life more manageable. They are proof that we were never meant to carry everything on our own.

At Saint Louise House, that is what we work to make possible. We create the environment that allows them to build the capacity for healthy, supportive relationships. When the stress of survival eases, when mothers can set goals and rely on consistent care, they can begin to connect with others and build the kinds of relationships that last. This is how families move from surviving to thriving. Stability makes space for connection. Connection builds confidence. And confidence opens the door to lasting change.

This Thanksgiving season, we are grateful for every act of care that keeps families strong: for the moms who lift one another up, for the mentors who show up when it matters most, and for the community that makes all of it possible.

Every day in Austin, children head to school carrying more than backpacks. They carry the uncertainty of where they will sleep that night. In the Austin Independent School District alone, more than 2,500 students from over 1,100 families are living in cars, motels, or staying temporarily with relatives. Many of these children have already experienced instability or violence, and without the right support, that instability can follow them into adulthood.

At Saint Louise House, we believe that ending family homelessness begins with providing both stability and opportunity. For 25 years, we have walked alongside mothers and children as they rebuild their lives, one secure night and one hopeful morning at a time.

That is why we are proud to join Amplify Home, a community-wide effort led by I Live Here I Give Here, the City of Austin, and local nonprofits to help every child in Central Texas find a safe place to call home.
How Saint Louise House Builds Lasting Stability

For the families we serve, stability begins with a safe place to live. But true healing and growth go far beyond housing. Saint Louise House offers more than a roof and keys. We welcome mothers and children into homes that are fully furnished, stocked with groceries, and supported by a community that believes in their future.

Families arrive with what they need to begin again. When they graduate, they leave with the furnishings of their home if they wish, and with far more: financial stability, stronger relationships, and the skills to thrive long after their time with us.

Our four-year program is grounded in a proven two-generation model that changes the lives of both mothers and children. Each mother partners with a dedicated case manager, known as an Empowerment Partner, who provides weekly support and guidance. Rent begins at a deeply affordable rate and increases gradually as income grows, giving families the space to recover and the preparation they need for permanent housing beyond the program.

This deep, consistent approach is what keeps families together and helps them build lasting independence.

In 2000, a few humble apartments opened their doors to mothers and children who had nowhere else to go. They came with little more than courage—and a belief that their families deserved a better future.

25 years later, that belief has grown into a community. Saint Louise House has walked alongside over 250 families, providing not just a place to live, but the stability, time, and support needed to rebuild. Our proven program surrounds families with a network of care and a timeline that meets them where they are. Because we know that true change doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time. It takes trust. And it takes a community committed to walking the journey together.

At the heart of our work is a two-generation approach, supporting both mother and child as they grow, learn, and heal. While moms work toward goals like completing school, securing employment, or managing their finances, their children are nurtured in an environment where they can experience consistency, calm, and the everyday joy of childhood.

This model works—because it centers dignity, honors individual timelines, and reflects the complexity of what it really takes to move forward.

Today, the need is greater than ever. Austin’s housing crisis has pushed more families to the brink. Every month, more than 50 families reach out to Saint Louise House seeking a lifeline. They are often doubled up with relatives, living in their cars, or on the verge of losing the little they have. That’s why, as we celebrate this milestone year, we’re also recommitting to our mission—and to the families who need us now more than ever.

25 Years of Saint Louise House:

This summer, we’ll be sharing the stories, photos, and small treasures that have defined Saint Louise House over the past two and a half decades—from move-in days to family celebrations, from hand-written thank-you notes to keys that once unlocked new chapters. These memories remind us just how far we’ve come—and how much more we can do together.

What’s Ahead:

This Mother’s Day, we’re launching a joyful, meaningful campaign to honor the women who shape our lives. Our digital Lotería lets you celebrate a mother or mentor while supporting moms currently in our program. Just like the families at Saint Louise House, this campaign blends joy, resilience, and community—all for a cause that matters.

And in September, our Game Changer Gala returns as a Silver Jubilee, celebrating not only the history of Saint Louise House, but the collective impact of those who’ve helped build it—one family, one apartment, one act of compassion at a time. We’ll honor the people who’ve made this journey possible and invite new partners to help us grow.

For 25 years, Saint Louise House has offered something rare: not a quick fix, but a steady, compassionate path forward. One that holds space for rest, for rebuilding, and for dreaming again.

We’re so proud of what’s been planted. And we can’t wait to share what’s blooming. Join us this year as we celebrate, reflect, and build what comes next—together.

February is a month filled with love, and at Saint Louise House, love is at the heart of everything we do. But love isn’t just a feeling—it’s an action, an intentional commitment to creating a world where all children have a safe place to call home. This month, as we celebrate love, we invite you to share the love with the families we serve by helping us build a more sustainable future—one that ensures every mother and child in our program has the stability, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

Why This Matters Now More Than Ever
For 25 years, Saint Louise House has been a source of stability for families experiencing homelessness. But the need for our services is greater than ever. Too many families in our community face uncertainty, struggling to find safe, affordable housing. We believe every child deserves a warm, loving home and a foundation for a brighter future. As we look toward the next 25 years, we know sustainability is key—not just in how we fundraise, but in how we grow our reach and ensure lasting impact. This means strengthening our donor community, expanding our network of support, and finding new ways for people to get involved in our mission.

The Power of Fundraising Events
Hosting fundraising events is one of the ways we ensure Saint Louise House remains a beacon of hope for the families we serve. Our signature events, like the Bubbles & Tea Brunch and the Game Changer Gala, not only raise critical funds but also bring together people who share a passion for creating a brighter future for mothers and children. These events allow us to engage with our community, celebrate our impact, and welcome new supporters into our mission.

Growing Through Microevents and Giving Circles
In 2025, we’re excited to expand our fundraising efforts through microevents and giving circles. Microevents—small gatherings hosted by supporters on behalf of Saint Louise House—offer an opportunity to introduce new audiences to our mission in an intimate and meaningful way. Whether it’s a coffee morning, a backyard dinner, or a wine tasting, these gatherings help us spread awareness and grow our community of supporters. Giving circles allow donors to come together, pool their resources, and make a collective impact. These groups create a powerful sense of shared purpose and ensure sustainable support for the programs that make a difference in the lives of Saint Louise House families.

Join Us: 25 for 25
As we celebrate 25 years of Saint Louise House, we have a bold goal: to host 25 microevents this year. We invite you to be part of this movement by hosting your own gathering in support of our mission. Whether you’re bringing together friends, family, or colleagues, your event can play a vital role in expanding our reach and ensuring that Saint Louise House remains a place of hope and transformation for years to come. More details coming soon! In the meantime, if you’re interested in hosting a fundraiser or crowdfunding initiative, you can submit your interest here and we will be in touch!

This February and beyond, let’s share the love—not just in words, but in action. Every child deserves a home. Every family deserves the chance to build a future filled with hope. By supporting our fundraising events, hosting a microevent, or joining a giving circle, you can help us build a sustainable future for Saint Louise House and the families we serve.

As we step into the new year, January offers us the opportunity to reflect, grow, and recommit to the values that guide us. At Saint Louise House, we are reminded that the work of building stable futures for mothers and children is deeply connected to the broader movement for justice and equity.

Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy is one of resilience, service, and unwavering commitment to justice. His vision of a world where every individual can thrive is at the heart of what we do at Saint Louise House. We believe, as he did, that true change requires not just words but action. In his spirit, we continue to work toward a future where every mother and child has the security of a home and the opportunity to build a better life. This MLK Day, we invite our community to honor his legacy through acts of service and by supporting efforts that create lasting change for families overcoming poverty.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

National Poverty Awareness Month

Poverty is not just about financial hardship—it is about barriers to opportunity, the weight of uncertainty, and the struggle to break free from cycles that persist for generations. National Poverty Awareness Month calls us to recognize these realities and take meaningful steps to address them. At Saint Louise House, we see firsthand how stable housing, coupled with supportive services, can transform lives. Every step toward economic stability for a mother is a step toward a brighter future for her children.

National Mentoring Month

Support and guidance can make all the difference in someone’s journey. National Mentoring Month reminds us of the power of encouragement, the importance of role models, and the impact of community. At Saint Louise House, we believe in walking alongside the families we serve, ensuring they have the tools, support, and relationships necessary to build lasting stability. Whether through mentorship, volunteering, or advocacy, we all have a role to play in uplifting others.

Looking Forward: Growing Together

At Saint Louise House, we don’t just provide housing—we build foundations for the future. Every mother who walks through our doors is fighting for stability, for safety, and most importantly, for her children’s future. But stability is not built in a day, and neither is breaking the cycle of poverty. It takes time, resources, and a community committed to walking alongside these families.

Over the past twenty-five years, we have worked to deepen our impact, ensuring that moms and children have the tools they need not just to survive but to thrive. That work continues, and sustaining it means planning for the long term. Through the support of our Giving Circles, we are creating a future where no mother wonders where her children will sleep, and children do not have to carry the burden and trauma of homelessness.

Your commitment today is an investment in tomorrow. A tomorrow where children can focus on learning and dreaming instead of worrying. A tomorrow where moms can take steps toward economic stability with the security of knowing their children are safe. A tomorrow where we don’t just end homelessness for one family—but for generations to come.

With your support, we will continue to grow, strengthen, and sustain the work that changes lives.

There are nights Elena can barely sleep—not because she’s not exhausted, but because every thought, every worry churns in her mind. She holds Sofia close as they lie in a garage full of mattresses. She paid $300 to rent a space for her and her daughter to sleep for just two weeks. The room is full of strangers. The weight of uncertainty presses down on her, but she forces herself to stay strong. Sofia needs her to be unbreakable.

Just a few months ago, she had a steady job, a little apartment, and the kind of life she’d dreamed of giving her daughter. But then the layoff came, the medical bills piled up, and suddenly they were moving from place to place, her pride bruised but her determination stronger than ever. Every day, she wakes up and asks herself the same questions: Will I find enough food today? Can I keep Sofia’s spirit unscathed, her dreams untouched? How long can I keep going like this?

Elena thinks about the families like hers that she used to see going through hard times and wondered how they kept going. Now she understands. She’s scared, but she keeps going because she has no other choice.

In her darkest moments, Elena imagines a different life—a warm home, food on the table, and the safety her daughter deserves. She whispers a quiet prayer, hoping for something, someone, some light to lead her out of this darkness.

This holiday season, you can be the light that helps families like Elena and Sofia. Your support can provide not just shelter and warmth but also the personalized care and goal-setting partnership with the adequate length of time that families need to rebuild stability and find brighter days.

This holiday season, we invite you to journey with us through a four-part series that shines a light on the reality of family homelessness, the strength of the human spirit, and the life-changing impact of Saint Louise House. You’ll meet Elena and Sofia, a mother and daughter whose story reflects the experiences of so many families in our community.

From the challenges they faced to the hope they discovered, their journey illustrates how your support can help families overcome obstacles and create brighter futures. Each part of the series will reveal another chapter of their story—from the uncertainty of homelessness to the empowerment of new opportunities, and finally, the triumph of breaking the cycle for the next generation. We’re sharing this series to remind us all of the power of kindness and community.

When Elena steps through the doors of Saint Louise House, she can barely believe it’s real. She feels the warmth of the space, sees the welcoming smiles, and smells the comforting scent of food coming from the kitchen. Her heart skips a beat as she looks around and realizes—for the first time in months—they don’t have to leave. This isn’t just a night or two of safety; this is their home, a place where they can build stability and create a future.

Sofia runs ahead, her eyes lighting up as she spots a basket filled with new toys—the first that are hers alone. She kneels beside it, holding each one as if it’s a treasure, and Elena feels her chest tighten with emotion. A moment later, Sofia’s little hand brushes the soft sheets on their beds, and Elena watches her daughter’s face light up with a joy she hasn’t seen in months. It brings tears to her eyes. She hadn’t realized how deeply Sofia had been affected—how quiet and withdrawn she’d become. For the first time, Elena sees a spark of her old Sofia return.

That week, Elena meets her Saint Louise House Empowerment Partner for the first time. They sit together in the living room, setting small, achievable goals for the weeks ahead. At first, the process feels overwhelming—mapping out her budget, organizing appointments, building a routine. But her Empowerment Partner reassures her that this partnership is a journey, not a sprint, and they’ll revisit her progress together every week.

Later, Elena and Sofia join other families on campus for community night, rolling tamales together and sharing their testaments of growth. The room fills with laughter, stories, and, for the first time in a long time, a sense of belonging. Elena feels overwhelmed by gratitude—not the fleeting, polite thankfulness she’s known before, but something deeper. For the first time, someone has truly seen her, believed in her, and extended a hand.

This Thanksgiving, Elena and Sofia are surrounded by love, support, and hope. Your generosity makes this possible. Be the light that continues to bring warmth and togetherness to families in need this holiday season.

At Saint Louise House, Elena’s days have taken on a rhythm. Each week, she meets with her Empowerment Partner to reflect on her progress and set new goals. Together, they tackle challenges like budgeting, parenting strategies, and finding steady employment. With each milestone she reaches—paying off a small debt, saving for the future, earning a certification—Elena feels her confidence returning.

For so long, survival was her only thought: How do I get through today? Now, she’s thinking beyond the next meal or the next night. She’s imagining the life she wants to build for Sofia—and herself.

Sofia is thriving too. With the stability of their home and her mom’s renewed energy, she’s become more vibrant, more playful. She’s making friends on campus and excelling in school, her spirit no longer weighed down by the uncertainty they once faced.

One evening, Elena sits with Sofia and revisits the goals they’d written down in their first month at Saint Louise House. She marvels at how far they’ve come: Sofia has joined a dance class, and Elena is preparing for a job interview that could change everything.

At Saint Louise House, Elena is learning to trust again—to trust herself, her community, and her future. With every success, she feels her flame of hope grow stronger.

This holiday season, you can be the light that helps families like Elena’s find empowerment and stability. Your support provides the tools, guidance, and time they need to build brighter futures.

Years after walking through the doors of Saint Louise House, Elena stands in the kitchen of her very own apartment, watching Sofia move confidently through their home. Their journey has been long and hard, but now they are here—grounded in a life filled with love, purpose, and dreams that once felt out of reach.

The walls are covered with snapshots of their lives: Sofia’s soccer team smiling on the field, her art project proudly displayed, a glittering prom night. Elena remembers the late nights studying for her own degree while balancing work and motherhood. Today, she’s a social worker, helping families with stories like hers find hope.

Sofia has her own dreams now: she’s applying to college to study psychology, inspired by the resilience she’s seen in her mom and herself. Elena sees the light in her daughter’s eyes and knows they’ve broken a cycle once thought impossible.

This holiday season, as Elena and Sofia gather around the table, their laughter is a testament to what’s possible with support and determination. Thanks to Saint Louise House—and donors like you—they’ve built a life of stability, safety, and hope.

Be the light that helps families break the cycle of homelessness and create lasting change for generations to come.
