Ash Wednesday is February 22! Lenten Calendar Available

Ash Wednesday is quickly approaching and many of you are wondering at what time Ash Wednesday services will be held. Mass with the distribution of ashes will be at 7:40 am, 5:30 pm and 7:30 pm in Spanish. If those times are not convenient you may also attend a prayer service with the distribution of ashes at 6:30 am and 12 noon.

In true St. Monica fashion, the staff has assembled numerous opportunities to awaken and renew your spiritual longings and to help you have the Lenten expierence you seek. Please take time to print off the scheduled events and post it in a place of prominence. Let us pray that we may have the strength this season to take advantage of these opportunities in order to truly follow Jesus’ command to “follow me”.

Movie on Homelessness

The Social Justice Committee is sponsoring a video which discusses homelessness and it will be shown Saturday evening at 7PM, 2/25, in the Parish Meeting Center (PMC), or the old rectory. The video is from Bill Moyer’s program called the Journal and the title of the video is ‘Mortgage Meltdown’ and centers on the meltdown’s devastating effects on the Slavic Village neighborhood (and others) in Cleveland. Please join us for snacks and and a question and answer dialogue afterward (please invite your friends and bring your children as it includes a fairly basic and understandable breakdown of what happened to cause this crisis).

Conscience Rights, Religious Liberty Violated by

Sweeping HHS Contraceptive Mandate

On January 20, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception.

The exemption provided for “religious employers” is so narrow that it fails to cover the vast majority of faith-based organizations, including Catholic hospitals, universities, and service organizations that help millions every year. Ironically, not even Jesus & his disciples would have qualified, because of their commitment to serve others.

To correct this threat to religious liberty and conscience rights, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act has been introduced in Congress (H.R. 1179, S. 1467). This measure will ensure that those who participate in the health care system “retain the right to provide, purchase, or enroll in health coverage that is consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions.” It is more important than ever that Members of Congress be urged to co-sponsor this measure – or thanked if they are already co-sponsoring the bill. For the list of current co-sponsors, please check H.R. 1179 and S. 1467 at: thomas.loc.gov.

Los derechos de conciencia, la libertad religiosa violados por

mandato generalizado de HHS sobre los anticonceptivos

El 20 de enero de 2011, el Departamento de Salud y Servicios Humanos (HHS, sigla en inglés) reafirmó una regulación que exige que casi todos los planes de salud cubran la esterilización, los abortivos y la contracepción.

La exención que se ofrece a “los empleadores religiosos” es tan estrecha que no cubre a la gran mayoría de organizaciones religiosas, incluidos los hospitales, universidades y organizaciones católicas de servicio que ayudan a millones cada año. Irónicamente, ni siquiera Jesús y sus discípulos habrían calificado, debido a su compromiso para servir a los demás.

Paracorregir estas amenazas a la libertad religiosa y los derechos de conciencia se ha presentado al Congreso la Ley de Respeto a los Derechos de Conciencia (H.R. 1179, S. 1467). Lectors Needed for Saturday 5:30 p.m./Sunday 7:40 a.m. Masses

The ministry of Lector is to proclaim God’s living word at Masses and liturgical gatherings where scripture readings are included. Through the Lector, God continues to feed his people at the table of the Word. The lector ministry is in need of volunteers for the Sat. 5:30pm mass or the Sunday 7:40 a.m. mass. Training will be provided, after which lectors are put on a schedule proclaiming the Word, every 5 or 6 weeks depending on the mass time. Once trained, they can also volunteer for holiday and holy day masses. For information, contact Kelly Samodral at 698-7724 or ksamodral@comcast.net.

Day of Reflection at Holy Angels

In preparation for the National Black Catholic Congress, which will be held this coming July, there will be a Day of Reflection on Sat. Jan. 28, 9 am to 3 pm, at Holy Angels Church located at the corner of 28th St. and Martin Luther King, Jr. St. The focus of the Day of Reflection will be exploring the results of the National Black Catholic Survey which was taken last year. There is no cost for the day and lunch is included. The Day of Reflection is sponsored by the Multicultural Ministry Office of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

St. Vincent de Paul Workday is Jan. 7

This coming Saturday, January 7th, it will once again be our turn to serve our brothers and sisters in need by volunteering at the St. Vincent DePaul Distribution Center. If you pay attention to the news you’ll realize that the need continues to be great and our brothers and sisters need our help more than ever. All types of help is needed including volunteers for: truck drivers and assistants (especially), house wares and linens, the warehouse and on the dock. This time we will “share” our Saturday with another team because the distribution center was closed on the 31st for the New Year’s holiday. Please plan to lend a hand to help others, especially needed in this difficult economy – it doesn’t take much to have a positive effect – just 4 short hours. I pray I’ll see you there on the 8th at 8:00am, the address is 1201 E. Maryland. If you have any questions, please call Mike Gaskey at 366-3153.
