Fortnight Could Shape Our Season

JON Wilkin reckons the next two matches could prove to be pivotal moments of the season so far.

Saints take on Warrington in Super League on Saturday before facing Leeds in the Challenge Cup Semi Final at the Galpharm a week later.

And the 26-year-old suggests that winning both matches would set the season up nicely.

“It is a massive fortnight and could, probably, shape our season,” he said. “If you look at the Warrington game, it is an opportunity to prove we are coming into some good form at this time of the season. It also gives us the opportunity to continue to build the momentum from what we thought was a good performance last Sunday at Wakefield.

“And the Semi Final gives us an opportunity to get back to Wembley again and that is something we are very keen to do.

“Our attachment to the cup comes from winning it over the last few years and you kinda take ownership of it. You feel like you are being cheated out of it when you watch two other teams in the final instead of you.

“When I watched last year’s final I still got the same emotions in the build up, but you quickly realise you are sat on the couch and not at the game. The Semi Final is a big game, but we would place no more emphasis on it than we normally would though.”

But before Saints' trip to the Galpharm, they have the small matter of a local derby against the Wolves – a team Saints have only lost to once in the Super League era.

“I don’t think there’s anything to that record, we probably revel in big game atmospheres as we have experience in them,” Wilkin added. “That could be one of the reasons but it’s not something we think about.

“Warrington have proved this year they have consistency in the league and that’s probably what they didn’t have last year. They have reached their potential and in the league they underachieved last year, especially when you look at their squad.

“You can see the cohesion in the squad that is paying off. Warrington have become a team this year rather than a collection of individuals.

“We need a big game and there’s no better chance to show we are in good form than at Warrington on Saturday.”

KEIRON Cunningham has been named in Saints 19-man squad for Saturday’s match at Warrington after recovering from a toe injury.

He is joined by Chris Flannery who has shaken off a calf strain and back rower Andrew Dixon.

Kyle Eastmond is making good progress from an ankle injury, as is Gary Wheeler from his hamstring strain, but the game comes too soon for them to return.

Transport to The Halton Stadium

ST HELENS Rugby League Club are delighted to confirm that buses will travel to The Halton Stadium on 2011 matchdays.

The club is in advanced discussions regarding transport to Widnes for fans on matchday, with the pick-up points identified by supporters to include Knowsley Road, Lea Green Station and Birchley Street.

Fares will be subsidised by the Club and the buses will run as shuttles making trips well in advance of kick off and also after the final hooter.

Debbie Thompson, Head of Commercial Operations at Saints, said: “Many season ticket holders are sticking by us in 2011 and we want to reward their loyalty in any way possible. A regular question at our recent roadshows has been travel arrangements and I can assure supporters we are well advanced with this.

“We have had some positive talks with possible transport partners and I can confirm we will be making provisions for buses from sites across St Helens to The Halton Stadium next season.

“The buses will run before and after the games and the cost to supporters will be kept at a minimum.

“This is an exciting new era for the Saints and with transport being provided and the best season ticket packages the club has ever produced, there has never been a better time to renew or buy your ticket for 2011.”

Cunningham Set For Warrington Return

SAINTS could welcome club captain Keiron Cunningham back for Saturday’s epic Super League clash at Warrington Wolves.

The 33-year-old looks set to have shaken off the toe injury that has sidelined him for the last five matches.

“Take nothing away from what James Roby and Scott Moore have been doing but Keiron is a big player for the club and has been for a long time,” Saints' Head Coach Mick Potter said. “He is an asset and will be a welcome return.

“He has been itching to play and wanted to play against Wakefield. He understands why he has been out and he’s been giving the medical staff some grief! He knows he needs a run out before the semi final.”

Chris Flannery should return from a calf strain and Andrew Dixon will also be available following a groin problem.

Matt Gidley, however, looks doubtful with a quad strain.

“We know it is a big fortnight and we are looking forward to it,” Mick added. “The coaching staff have looked a little at next week’s Semi Final but the focus is for Warrington and we’re excited about that.

“It looks like it will be a fantastic atmosphere and probably sell out.

“We aren’t in that luxurious position to rest players though and if someone isn’t fit, they won’t play. We had 11 out last week with injuries and it looks like that will be nine this week.”

He continues: “We’re all aware of the record and it’s a good one to have, but it doesn’t come into the thinking. I’m expecting a physical game in the forwards and both teams like to be expansive too so it's likely to be a really entertaining game for the fans.

“The players want to win and be competitive. We don’t focus on the record as it can take your eye off what you want to do.”

It features a stunning 3D Walkthrough of the facility which will be built on the former UGB Glass Site on St Helens Linkway.

Saintsations Help Bag 11 Titles

THE extremely talented Pink Poison Cheerleaders, which feature Saints very own ‘Saintsations’, attended the International Cheerleading Championships last weekend and bagged a massive array of titles.

Competing against thousands of other cheerleaders to win the prestige Champion titles that were on offer, they took home eleven Championship Titles, 15 Runners-Up Places, two third places and four fourth places.

More than 200 people left St.Helens on Friday night and headed to Coventry for the competition, which took two 18 hour days to complete.

And Pink Poison featured in 32 different categories so it was a very busy day for all them.

The talent was very high with squads travelling from far and wide to compete at this fantastic event.

Everyone did a fantastic job and St.Helens should be very proud to have such an extremely talented bunch of youngsters flying the flag around Britain.

Pink Poison and the Saintsations were the talk of the competition due to their outstanding performances

Pink Poison and The Saintsations are back in training now to be ready for the BCA Northern Cheerleading Classics in Blackpool on December 4 and 5.

Potter: Performance Shows Good Signs

MICK Potter thought his side’s hard work during the week paid off in Saints’ 50-6 win over Wakefield at Belle Vue on Sunday afternoon.

A ferocious attack that saw nine tries – backed-up with some scrambling defence that was as good as it has been all year – gave the Saints their second win on the trot.

“I thought our performance in attack especially in the second half was very good,” Mick said. “I was also pleased with our defence too. To hold Wakefield to six points was very pleasing and the guys worked very hard in the week to make that part of our game work.

“I know the next few weeks are probably in the back of our minds, but they haven’t been spoken about. We are trying to build some momentum and make our play better than focus on the Challenge Cup right now.

“We want to do some little things better and I think we did that today. That is a good sign for us.”

He continued: “I thought Leon Pryce was outstanding in both halves today. He is an integral member of our team and one of the better players in Super League.

“I am surprised he isn’t in the England set up, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

The first half hour was nip and tuck with good defence keeping the Wildcats out as they dominated field position and possession on the back of some silly plays from the Saints.

All that changed when Captain Warren Thompson moved into the middle and Nathan Ashe put in a massive 30/10 kick to gain an attacking scrum.

A poor pass from the base of the scrum put the Saints on the back foot but from the play the ball Ashe took it to the line and fed Thompson 10 metres out. The Captain beat one and with two on his back stretched out to score.

On the home sides next set good defence forced the knock on on half way. From the scrum the Saints drove deep with Phil Baines held inches short. On the last Ashe put a great grubber in and Danny Wakefield plucked it out of the air for his first try at this level.

The best move of the game gave the Saints the best send off to the break as Billy Sheen finished off a move which his vision had started. With half time approaching the Reserves were content to drive the ball to half way and kick deep, but on the last Sheen saw his chance as he darted blind at the play the ball. He passed it on to Josh Jones who committed the winger before feeding Tommy Johnson on the outside. He in turn committed the full back before feeding it back inside for Sheen to gallop the final 30 to the line. Johnson’s third conversion made it 18 – 0 and all was rosy in the garden.

However, injuries, ill discipline and poor decision making were to make the second half a war of attrition. Nick Fozzard had gone off after 25 minutes not to return and he was followed soon into the second half by Danny Wakefield who also was ruled out for the game with a knee injury.

By that stage the Wildcats had scored and soon after scored again and with 25 minutes left the Saturday afternoon stroll had well and truly gone.

Carl Forster made a break down the middle on the hour and with support from Sutton, Sheen and Armstrong the Saints looked favourites to score only for the last tackle grubber to roll dead.

With 10 minutes to go and both Josh Cullen and Tom Armstrong ruled out with further injuries the Saints were denied the match winner by the touch judge who ruled Phil Baines to be offside before touching down Ashe’s deft grubber.

The grandstand finish was set up when the Wildcats scored with 5 to go and the Saints looked out on their feet. A good chase from the kick off was negated by a debatable ball-stealing decision on Billy Sheen which meant that the Saints would have to defend their line again. Heroic defence from Sheen, Sutton and Ashall kept the men from Belle View at bay and the cheers of relief at the final whistle from the coaching staff alone were heart felt.

The big defensive effort can, however, mask the real reason for the close result. Too many people went missing when it counted leaving too much to be done by too few.

Saints Tame Cats In Nine-Try Romp

SAINTS cantered to a superb nine-try victory over Wakefield at a windswept Belle Vue.

Two tries a piece from Tony Puletua, Jon Wilkin and Shaun Magennis laid the platform, whilst Jamie Foster converted seven from nine as Saints recorded their second win on the trot.

Inspired by a superb Tevita Leo-Latu, Wakefield laid siege to the Saints in the opening 20 minutes and could have been further ahead than the Kieran Hyde try they posted early doors.

But Mick Potter’s men worked their way into the game and marshalled superbly by Leon Pryce and James Roby blasted to a 16-6 lead at half time.

The stand-off was in impervious form scoring a fine try from a standing start and then having a significant hand in Ade Gardner and Tony Puletua’s four-pointers.

In the second half, Jon Wilkin put the gloss on a fine move before Shaun Magennis mopped up after Pryce’s high ball had caused chaos.

Wilkin added his second and then Magennis matched his teammate’s effort.

The outstanding James Roby then fired a wonder ball for Puletua’s second before Francis Meli’s try and Jamie Foster’s seventh kick brought up the 50 - and a much-deserved victory.

The final score: 50-6.

Saints recalled Foster to the side following the withdrawal of Chris Dean whilst Matty Ashurst came into the starting 13.

Magennis retained his number 13 jersey and Lee Gaskell made his third appearance in a row.

Wakefield also had to dig deep into their strength in depth – John Kear having to contend with a number of injuries.

Kieran Hyde made his debut, whilst Sam Obst and back row forward Danny Kirmond helped alleviate the situation by returning.

Wakefield signalled their intent from the kick off, getting into the Saints and putting pressure on their back line.

On their first set of six they pushed it wide and Damien Blanch was excellently bundled into touch by Foster.

But Saints conceded two penalties in a row to leave themselves in trouble and therefore it was no surprise when Kieran Hyde popped up on his debut to give the home side the lead.

Saints hit back on 13 minutes with a fantastically worked move when Darryl Millard was penalised for crossing. The ball came out from dummy half, into the hands of James Graham and he found Scott Moore.

From there, Leon Pryce took the ball from a standing start and sidestepped his way to the line. Foster converting.

Wakefield were then called for a forward pass – Ben Thaler ruling out Glenn Morrison’s effort.

And Saints made them pay; this time a deft kick from Leon Pryce, off the outside of his foot, found Ade Gardner in space and he made no mistake.

Pryce’s magic worked again with an easy and laid back pass finding Tony Puletua just after the half hour mark.

Scott Moore’s chip in the first minute of the second half was just knocked forward in the air by Ade Gardner.

But five minutes later, following two penalties, another fine worked move saw Wilkin profit from Moore’s pass.

Twice Saints pushed into the Wildcats’ 10 metres but they couldn’t just find the end product.

Yet, moments later, a towering high ball from Pryce was held up in the air, not collected by Hyde and Shaun Magennis pounced. Foster with the extras.

Moments later, a strong Paul Clough run gave Saints and Roby the chance to punish the Wildcats once more.

And he did, avoiding two obvious passes to slot Wilkin over for his second. Foster making it 32-6.

Magennis brought up his brace on Saints next set – Foster converting.

Puletua then finished off James Roby’s run to bring up his second – Foster converting once again.

Francis Meli then notched his 21^st of the season to end a fine afternoon’s work for the Saints – Foster adding the two that brought up the 50.

Meli Looking For Improved Turnarounds

FRANCIS Meli is calling on his teammates to eradicate the second half errors if they want to taste Super League and Challenge Cup glory once more.

Both Catalans and Harlequins got on a roll following the turnaround in the last two games and that hampered efforts to grab vital league victories.

Thankfully, Saints stole themselves turn over Quins, but the deficit was too much to overcome a fortnight back against the Dragons.

“We seem to be starting poorly in the second half of games recently and we have been working hard on that this week,” Meli said. “Catalans did that against us, Quins did too, and we can’t afford to let those easy points in and let teams get on a roll.

“We have to stick to what we do best and try and rectify our mistakes.”

He continues: “It was a difficult game against Quins as we had beaten them twice during the year and they would have targeted the match to try and get one over us. But it was also important to us as well, especially following the poor effort against Catalans.

“This Sunday we have a tricky game against Wakefield as they will want to come out and show their fans what they can do.

“We are continuing to build for the big games and we need to play well too.”

Meli has scored 20 tries this season to add to the 68 he bagged in his previous four seasons at the Club.

“I have got past a few niggles and feel I am playing well, but want to stay healthy and put in the performance on the field,” he added. “Saints have been good to me since I joined and in the last five years I have achieved a lot and played with some great players too.

“I am out of contact at the end of the season but haven’t decided what will happen. It is up in the air at the moment really and probably in the next month or two things will be sorted out.

“At the moment though I just need to play well and put in the performances.”

Jonny Lomax misses out with a quad tear but Lee Gaskell looks set to make his third appearance on the trot after debuting against Catalans and coming off the bench last week.

Chris Flannery is still unavailable with a calf strain and he is joined by Chris Dean who will sit out the match with a quad injury.

But Jamie Foster and Tom Armstrong return to the squad.

SAINTS u18s match-up with Wigan Warriors tomorrow (Saturday July 24) has been called off.

This is due to the Warriors' inability to field a team.

No details on a possible re-arrangement of the fixture are available at the current time.

Saints Appoint Royce Simmons

ST HELENS Rugby League Club have appointed current Australia and Wests Tigers assistant coach Royce Simmons as their Head Coach commencing next season on a two-year contract.

Chairman Eamonn McManus stated: "Royce will bring vast experience to the Saints. He is as used to successfully coaching elite players and developing young talent alike. Having worked directly with Australian national coach Tim Sheens for the last seven years, he is more than well equipped to ensure that Saints compete and succeed at the highest level."

Royce Simmons stated: "This is a huge honour for me and a challenge that I am ready for. St. Helens are one of the great historic names in world rugby league and are at the crossroads for a great future as they move to a new stadium with a squad that has a great balance and blend of proven internationals and some of the brightest young prospects in the game.

“I'm fully aware of their record of achievement and the style of rugby which has so distinguished them over the years. I'm really looking forward to taking up the role and moving to England."

Australian national coach Tim Sheens added: "Although sad to lose Royce, I'm extremely happy for him. He's now absolutely ready to succeed in coaching a club of the standing of St. Helens. He's more than aware of what it takes and has all the attributes and attitude to succeed at the highest level."

Saints have complemented the appointment of Simmons by adding current club captain Keiron Cunningham to their coaching staff next season.

Cunningham will assume a split role, principally assisting in the coaching of the academy and assisting with fitness and conditioning.

Royce is currently assistant to Tim Sheens at Wests Tigers and Australia.

Originally from New South Wales, the 50-year-old made 233 appearances in a career spanning 11 years with Penrith from 1980.

He made his name at hooker also appearing 10 times for both New South Wales and Australia.

He coached Penrith from 1994 to 2001 and has been with Wests Tigers since 2003.

BLACKBROOK Royals u12s are seeking players to boost their squad for next season.

The age group will be moving to the 13-a-side game so if you fancy a go at our great sport, why not give them a try.

The Royals do not charge a signing on fee or weekly subs and training is at the club on Boardmans Lane on Tuesday 6pm-7pm and Saturday 10am-12pm.
