While stock market trading has always been basically speculation based, there has always been a basic tenet to it like audits, auditing standards, corporate governance and above all the will power of the top management to state that in a particular quarter the company has not performed well and what steps they would take to mitigate these problems. Satyam simply hiked up the income and turnover figures, day in and day out to make the rose rosier and pinker and finally landed up with red face.

However if we are taken for ride and our money is literally eaten away ("Paise Khane" in marathi), fundamentally strong companies like L&T, Hero Honda, NTPC, SBI would also suffer and also the upcoming new issues.People simply wont trust any industry and in case a company progresses fast people would think another Satyam is making and there would be panic sale.

God save the investers and let wisdom prevail on the investor and indrustialist community.

Investments in stocks are high risk investments due to the nature of stock itself. Returns are higher but risks are also higher. Traditionally, it has been a mantra that one should invest based on companies fundamentals. If auditors like PWC certify companies fundamentals, investors trust them and make their decisions. Time has come where auditors must be made responsible to investors. This does not mean, there is no ownus on corporate management. Having said this, investors who ride on stock market waves would now stay away which is a good news. If at all, investments in stocks must happen clearly based on fundamentals. Moreover, investors will learn to invest in other areas available in terms of stocks, property, gold etc.

The Satyam Episode is not limited to as we look at the scam that happened in the past related to stock market. It has made a deep impact on the mind of common investor.This is s straight attack on the faith we put on markets. Whom shall we believe now? If company like Satyam can do this why not others? what not can happen in the smaller companies we invest?
This all Satyam episode will certainly take investors mile away from the markets. There is no place remained now to invest in the market. Though good companies may suffer because of this attitude of common investors this going to happen now. Inevstments will stay out of markets.

Satyam's revelations are extremely shocking in India's corporate history. Urgent & concrete steps need to be taken to prevent occurrence of such events. Few deterrent steps may include :-
1. Current punishment under Indian laws seems to be inadequate. For serious frauds such as Satyam, there has to be provision under which the guilty may even be hanged till death.
2. Undue importance given to stock markets and share prices in the name of investor wealth. In fact stock prices do not always reflect company's worth and earning capacity. They are rigged by brokers and unscrupulous promoters. There has to be certain govt. regulations that curb the granting of ESOPs and performance incentives to senior management who often try to enhance short term share price to make money.
3. Properties and bank accounts of all the executive and non-executive directors on the board of Satyam should be immediately attached. These people have breached the public trust and have no right whatsoever to plead ignorance. They should be severely punished.
4. Executive management committee of people of repute with fair participation of senior employees (in terms of no. of years and not level in the hierarchy) should be formed to take care of the affairs of the company and employee welfare.
5. The clients should be immediately approached in order to restore their confidence.
6. ICAI should investigate the negligence or otherwise on the part of auditors and senior finance personnel of Satyam. If found guilty, ICAI should cancel the membership of all the guilty CAs involved in this fraud.

It is indeed a very shocking news to the entire IT industry of the world, not India alone.
Having actively worked in IT Marketing field for past 10 years for several leading IT companies, I can feel that the aftershocks will be borne by the entire world already when there is a deep recessionary trend.
Let us first see the reasons, why this happened. As it appears now but would be clearer in days-to-come, it's hard to believe that the whole situation is just one man's handiwork and / or greed to stay at top.
If we analyse the possible root causes of this failure, it can be as follows, and the actions can be taken as appropriate. I added a few suggestions from my side.
1. Corporate Accounting Practices and Auditors' role in covering fictitious books. - Certainly they cant shy away from it and if Raju is to be punished for hiding the cash related facts, Audiotors are equally accountable for not earthing the problem in time. Those related should be BANNED to work in India or Rest of the world by world community. GOI should not shy away to ban PWC as ROW will not shy away now to ban Satyam.
2. Role of Independent Directors - Nobody sees the books in details. Surprising, Not so much ! Especially when most speak same language, come from same family, same region or same college or same town, same country (for a so called MNC).If this is the trend in rest of the IT companies, it should be immediately sensed as THREAT factor by investors and disinvest or for better, not invest at all.
3. Whistleblowers' Silence - In the western / developed world, whistleblowers are rewarded. I am sure if you speak with any Satyam Employee (who would like to thrash his or her ESOP at come-what-may-price now) at least many of them would say that they knew "something" was wrong. But why did not that same employee blow a whistle ? THIS, is simply not an INDIAN culture to stand up against corruption. ACB or not, people firmly believe that being corrupt is a way of life. "Chalata Hai" is the attitude. More, even the NASSCOM does not have any active policy towards awarding the whistleblowers. If they openly say so and reward at least 1 Crore to unearth scams (in own companies), I am sure thousands of crores of investors wont be lost later at such a sorry stage. NASSCOM can also claim this money later from appropriate authorities.
4. SEBI, laws of the land and effectiveness to curb repeat situations - Now everyone says they are shocked, they will investigate and take action. What action will they take, Delist Satyam at the most, then EOW will file cases after several years of investigation and at the most 7 years max of imprisonment for the person/s involved ? Surely it's not enough when millions of small investors, fortune 500 customers, 50000+ employees, their dependent families, vendors, IT aspirant students and more over each Indian (who is still proud of his country) is cheated by Raju and his so far unfound colleagues.

Incidentally I read statements of an Hon Minister of GOI in the newspaper today. He said the whole Satyam story is related to Private Sector which WE the GOI are not supposed to monitor and there is NO QUESTION of bailing it out...! WOW, what a Government Strategical Answer ? Would this same minister say the same thing, had it been a PSU ? Would he dare to say the same thing if it was AI or SBI/BOI/ONGC ?

Some immediate actions (both corrective and preventive) can be taken by GOI-MOF, SEBI, Investors and all.
1. Improve Corporate Governance Acts and make punishments so stricter and stronger that people like Raju wont dare to do any thing wrong again. 160 years RI is jail ? May be far-fetched, but for multiple scams in same organisations, he and all the guilty should spend his rest of life in prison. Only then would others take a lesson.
2. All companies who cross 100 Crore level, must have Independent Directors (NO REMUNERATION PAID) whose honest role should be to probe into wrong doings that are possible, just like independent auditors. If required, let NASSCOM / GOI do this and pay these directors. There are many good men and women who are available who will gladly do this job.
3. NASSCOM should create a clear whistleblower-award-policy for employees and awards should be big. Only then will employees come up.
4. Ordinary people who invest hard earned money in IT companies should take a cue and invest in other areas for time being. Surely not all IT Cos are bad as Mr. Narayan Moorthy said, but it would be wise to divest in IT and reinvest in multiple folders like Engg, Oil, Power, Bullion or Forex.
5. GOI - Ministry for Labor & Welfare, should also set up a committee for what can be done to improve IT sector employees' morale as they are not allowed to form any unions, let alone asking their own salaries in Time or protesting against forced overworking at onsite / offshore w/o getting paid for extra work. This is really a big challenge now as one cant stop to think as to what will happen to those 52000 people and their families. Will Satyam pay them all min 6 month salary and allow those who want to leave ?

I am sure various industry experts would agree that some of these actions will lead to improvement of India's image in ROW in a longer run.

At present there high priority need to clearly define
- Why the police force is required?
- Whats there objective?
- Whats there duty?
- Whom they are working?
Whatever the answer is that should be clear and known to the public transparently.
Right know there the felling is that
- Police force is there for the personal benefit of whoever is selected and worked as police officer.
- Police is instrument of politician used for there personal benefit.
- Police worked as broker to sell the law for Government or personal revenue generation e.g. Today common people feel Traffic Police motto is 'Brake the law/rule & pay money'.
Unfortunately traffic department work like 'broker' and not takings more effort to tell/force the people about to follow rule, try to establish discipline in between them.
Therefore people not giving respect to them and some time hit them, right now there image is like broker/salesman.
- No different picture in other police department
- Generally police seen on long duty for politicians visit or protection, why don't one different stream create in the department for this job.
- Very less effort is taken for investigation of crime cases, might because of the other duty.

Only make HighTech police department is not priority need of Police department its necessary to establish or Cristal clear the foundation or principals about the Police department on very HIGH PRIORITY and try to follow these basic principals which is in favor of common People . This will definitely improve confidence & the image of Police department in common people, these help to improve the moral and mental satisfaction of people working in police department, who is at present on high stress.
Right now don't spend any money for sake of technology.This will look like businessmen i.e. for more revenue invest money in this business.

"eGovernance" is a term used commonly for following principles / objectives / motives.

Government-to-Citizen, OR Government-to-Customer (G2C), OR

Government-to-Business (G2B), OR

Government-to-Government (G2G), OR

Government-to-Employees (G2E)

Here, the Dept of Home affairs, (police) of Maharashtra State is only spending money for adopting IT for its own use (G2G or G2E), (from the article it can be assumed).

As such, unless and until you report as to how many customer or citizen oriented benefits are going to be there by this money-spending, you may not get good response from the people. I give you only one example as hint. Can the people send an email to nearest police station in a prescribed format on police site (even being anonymous) when some goons play band / use loudspeakers in their locality after 10 pm ? How fast will the police act on such disturbance reports ?

SPEED is the objective in all IT projects apart from apparent other objectives such as Time is Money, Reducing Paper Works, accuracy and formalizing of documents and reports, etc.

We, the citizens need to know what is going to be the focus of the police that will help the citizens very clearly.

Public participation is a key to any eGoverment project success as the world has experienced in last 10 years since the term first came into existence in 1999 in the USA. The Clinton Admin had simply asked the states to come up with 500 electronic forms that citizens need to fill in daily life. How many forms are there with the Mah Police that they ask citizens to fill by hand and now plan to make electronic ?

Another story is slightly differentiating from this topic, but is equally important to note here. The eGovernance Standards Committee set up by the GOI has now come up (in Aug2008) with its 8th revised draft on Unique Personal Data to be collected and centrally computerized for all the citizens. A lot is being said and done to improve this draft before entering in a legislation. Its a bit strange that Govt of Andhra Pradesh has a representative there but there is no official representative from the State of Maharashtra ? I may be incorrect, but I have read that report and found it surprisingly strange.

In UP,a BSP MLA directly involved in the cold blooded murder of a PWD engineer.This made headline news in "Sakal" yesterday as it is convenient to the congress/NCP.

"Sakal" printing comments about need to hang terrorist Kassab,but silent on central govt's failure to hang Afzal guru sentenced to death ages ago!

While Sakal does few very good things,it still is obviously partisan towards Congress/NCP as if the paper belongs to NCP supremo!

This is unethical,avoidable & irresponsible as also proved by printing the stupid biased articles of Delhi based Prafull Bidwai time & again.

Please stop this immediately if you have the courage to call a spade a spade! Late Shri.Parulekar would not have allowed this.

Regardless of the pathetic stage at which Indian politics is poised at present & the ruling UPA govt's sychophantic attitude towards one family,it is time to rise above all this if sakal has to play a constructive role in an impartial manner!

I think this is not new to our country. They must resign now.It may seen harsh for them but its the time to correct ourselves and if they are going to lead our country they should do this. In our country lawmakers are only braking laws so what about others. There is nothing like law in our country. It is one of the biggest reason, why some people are able to get in city like mumbai and kill the innocent people. We common indian citizens dont follow laws and we also let it broken by others very easily, we dont care what others are doing. We dont care about anybody breaking a law can create a big threat to our security and innocent people. We dont think these innocent people can be our relatives like sons, daughters, brothers, sisters. Everybody is interested in taking law into hands and they are proud of that. And its not limited to an individual party. A person like Modi who considers himself as great indian patriot is also breaking laws, to make show to the people. First of all let us think in this way if somebody is saying that He is great indian, or great indian leader, he or she must follow law, because being indian means following indian constitution and laws in first place and second thing he must stop others from breaking laws. Think of one thing, if all the existing laws would have been followed very strictly can anybody be able to come into our country illegaly and kill the innocent people, it is clear that they were breaking laws while coming in India and nobody cared about that, nobody bother to report that, our corrupt system made it easy for such people to get into country and even some people saw it happening they did not worry to report or if they reported our corrupt system did not cared about it. That means that breaking laws is common and lawmakers and lawkeepers dont care about it. Lets observe ourselves how many times we break traffic laws while going to office ...... Its the time to respect our laws because we make it for ourselves, and tell our politicians to respect laws who want to us to break them in the name of Language, caste, and political interests.

It is a shame that our politicians are showing such a poor self discipline and responsibility. The main problem is that we are electing these illiterates with no respect for the country. How do we stop this? Why does the press not declare names of such individuals? Be courageous to expose these inefficient leaders. It is sad to see our country going this way.

पेट्रोलची चोरी हा पुण्यातला पेट्रोल पंपावरची नित्याचिच बाब आहे. तिथले कर्मचारी ही कधी ग्राहकांशी नीट बोलत नाहीत आणि ग्राहकाचे लक्ष्य नसताना पेट्रोलच्या मीटर मध्ये गड़बड़ करणे आणि फसवणे हा नेहमीचाच धंदा आहे. पंप चालकानी या मध्ये लक्ष्य घालून आपले कर्मचारी सेवा नीट देतात का याकडे लक्ष्य द्यावे ही माफक अपेक्षा आहे. विनाशुल्क हवा, स्वच्छ शौचालय, विश्रामकक्ष आदी गोष्टी तर स्वप्नवत आहेत.
