Melisa çalısı 4 metreye kadar boylanabilen, çok hoş kokulu bir bitkidir. Çok güzel kokmasından dolayı kolonya çiçeği de denmektedir. Güzel kokusundan dolayı bahçelerde sık tercih edilen bitkiler arasında yer almaktadır.

Melisa çalısının çiçeklenmesi havaların ısınmasından başlayarak sonbaharın sonlarına kadar devam eder.

Her türlü toprağa uyum sağlar ve yetişebilir. Dikkat edilmesi gereken noktalardan bir tanesi bitki dikimi yapıldıktan sonra toprağının kurumamasına çok dikkat edilmelidir. Eğer melisa çalısının çok iyi bir gelişim göstermesini istiyorsanız; organik maddece zengin toprak seçimi yapmalı ve bitkiyi bol güneş alan bir yere ekmelisiniz.

Orta derecede neme ihtiyaç duyar. Yazın sıcaklarda bitkinin yapraklarının sulanması iyi olacaktır.

Melisa çalısı evde de yetiştirilmeye uygun bir bitkidir. Ancak en önemli etken burada toprağının uygun olmasıdır. Geçirgen, havadar ve süzek toprak önerilir. Ayrıca toprağa hem ponza taşı hem de perlit eklemeniz de gerekecektir. Sulama konusuna da çok dikkat edilmelidir. Toprak kurumaya başlarken sulanmalıdır. Her zaman sulamak ya da çok sulamak bitkinin çürümesine neden olacaktır.

Dallarının sıkışık olmaması için budamasını yapabilirsiniz. Küçük fide iken baştan budama yaparsanız daha çok dallanmasını sağlayabilirsiniz.

Testere çiçeği kaktüs ailesinden olan harika bir çiçektir. Aslında yaprakları için yetiştiriciliği yapılır. Evinizde kaktüs türü bitki yetiştirmek istiyorsanız; testere çiçeği sizin için en ideal bitkilerden bir tanesidir. Yapraklarının şekli testere dişine benzemesinden dolayı testere çiçeği adını almıştır.

Güzel yapraklarının dışında orta kısmında bir sap ucunda çok güzel çiçek de açar. Hem yaprakları hem de güzel çiçeği için yetiştiriciliği yapılır. Hem ofis hem de ev bitkisi olarak yetiştiriciliğini yapabilirsiniz. Biraz özenle çok güzel bitkiler yetiştirebilirsiniz.

Testere Çiçeğinin Ekolojik İstekleri:

Humuslu bahçe toprağı testere çiçeği için ideal toprak seçimi olacaktır. Yetiştiriciliğini evde yapmak istiyorsanız bu humuslu bahçe toprağına 1/3 oranında ponza taşı eklemeniz çok yararlı olacaktır.

Testere çiçeğini ilkbahar ve yaz aylarında bolca sulayın. Sonbaharda ise su miktarını iyice azaltın. Sadece toprağının yüzeyi iyice kuruduğu zaman su verin. Çünkü kaktüsler bünyelerinde çok su depo ettikleri için sonbaharda fazla suya ihtiyaç duymayacaklardır.

Güneş ışığını çok sever. Bu yüzden güneş ışığı alan bir yerde yetiştiriciliğini yapmanız önerilir. Bitkinin günlük 5-6 saat kadar güneş ışığına ihtiyacı olduğunu unutmayın.

Palmiye genellikle tropik bölgelerde gördüğümüz yuvarlak gövdeye sahip , geniş yaprakları olan ve 1000 den fazla çeşide sahip olan bir bitkidir.

Üretimi : Aşı , kökten ayırma ve tohum yöntemiyle olmaktadır.

Ekolojik İstekleri :

Sıcak, ılıman ve güneşli iklimlerden hoşlanırlar. Uzun süreli donlardan zarar görürler. Taban suyu problemli olmayan, besince zengin topraklarda iyi gelişirler. Kısacası, verimli ve geçirgen topraklardan hoşlanırlar. Kuru ve kurak topraklara uyum sağlayabilirler.

Yetiştirilmeye uygun olan bölgelerde peyzajda kullanılan önemli bitkilerdir. Görmeye alışık olduğumuz yerler ise ; havuz kenarları ya da caddelerdir.

ÇÖL PALMİYESİ :

Çöl Palmiyesi Kuzey Amerika'da doğal olarak yetişmektedir. Boyu 20 metreye kadar ulaşabilir. Fotolarda görüldüğü üzere bahçelerde çok güzel bir görüntü oluşturmaktadır. 8-10 metre boylarında siyah renkte meyveleri oluşmaktadır. Genellikle nemli bölgelerde bahçe peyzajında sık tercih edilen bitkilerdendir.

Üretimi : Bu bitkinin üretimi ve çoğaltılması tohumdan ya da kökten ayırma ile olmaktadır. Çok kurak ve çok sıcak bölgelerde derin topraklarda çok iyi gelişir. Sıcak rüzgarlara ve çöl havasına dayanıklıdır.

DATÇA HURMA AĞACI :

Akdeniz kuşağı bitkisidir. Boyu genellikle 10 - 15 metreye kadar ulaşabilmektedir.

Üretimi : Bu bitkinin üretimi tohumla ve kökten ayırma yöntemi ile olmaktadır. Sıcak Akdeniz ikliminde , sıcak ve güneşli iklimde , hafif kumlu ve çakıllı topraklarda çok iyi gelişir.

AKDENİZ BODUR PALMİYESİ :

Akdeniz bölgelerinde rahatlıkla yetişen bir bitkidir. Ülkemizde de rahatlıkla yetişebilmektedir. Boyu 90 - 150 cm arasında değişmektedir. Yavaş büyüyen bir bitkidir ve çok gövdeli ışık ağacıdır.

Latince adıyla Ligustrum olan halk arasında ise Kurtbağrı bitkisi olarak bilinen bitki yaprak döken ya da her dem yeşil çalı ya da ağaç türünde bir bitkidir. Bitkinin yaprakları karşılıklı dizilmiş, kısa saplı ve kenarları dişsizdir. Genellikle çiçekleri dal uçlarında beyaz renkli ve birleşik salkım durumundadır. Ligustrum bitkisi toprak seçen bir bitki değildir. Pek çok toprak türünde yetiştirilebilirler. Bu özelliğinden dolayı da çok tercih edilen bir bitkidir. Hatta bitki kuru yerlerde bile yetiştirilmeye müsaittir. Ancak çok iyi gelişim ve verim isteniyorsa; nemli ve organik maddeler bakımından zengin topraklar ligustrum bitkisi için en iyisi olacaktır.

Kurtbağrı bitkisinin üretimi tohum ve çelikle olur. Tohum yöntemi çok zaman alan ve sabır gerektiren bir yöntemdir. Tohumla üretimi bu işi ticari amaçla ve profesyonel olarak yapan kişiler daha çok tercih etmektedirler. Üretimin hızlı olması ve gelişiminin hemen olması istenirse en iyi yöntem çelikle üretim yöntemidir.

Sardunya Çiçeği Yetiştiriciliği

Sardunya çiçeğinin anavatanı Güney Afrikadır. Doğada 230 kadar türü bulunmaktadır. Çok yıllık otsu ve yarı odunsu çalı biçiminde bitkilerdir. Yaprakları parçalı ve palmat damarlıdır. Orta kısımları açık, kenarları koyudur. Çiçekleri yalınkat ve katmerli, kırmızı, turuncu, pembe, beyaz kenarlıdır.

Güzel çiçekleri için yetiştirilirler. Türüne göre hem saksı yetiştiriciliğinde hem de bahçe peyzaj ve çit bitkisi olarak tercih edilebilirler. Akdeniz ve ege yörelerinde genelde evlerin bahçelerinde görürüz. Diğer bölgelerde balkon ve evde saksı bitkisi olarak yetiştiriciliği yapılmaktadır.

Sardunya Bitkisinin Ekolojik İstekleri

Bitkinin en iyi gelişimi gösterdiği sıcaklık değeri 15 C derece civarıdır. Kışın sardunyalar en düşük 7 - 10 C derecede bulundurulmalıdır.

Sardunyalar genelde yüksek orantılı nemden hoşlanırlar. Nem oranının yaklaşık olarak %70 civarında olması gerekmektedir.

Sardunyalar kışın bol ışık ihtiyacı duyarlar. Yazın ise daha çok yarı gölge yerleri severler. Yazın özellikle doğrudan güneş alan yerlerde bulundurulmamaları gerekmektedir.

Bitki büyüme ve çiçeklenme döneminde bolca sulanmalıdır. Çok sıcak havalarda sık sık su püskürtülmelidir. Çiçeklenme döneminden sonra ise fazla su verilmemeli, saksı toprağı orta derecede nemli hatta biraz kuru bile bırakılabilir. Sulamasını hep aynı ölçü ile yapmanız da çok faydalı olacaktır.

Saksıda biriken su varsa bu mutlaka dökülmelidir. Aksi halde bitkiniz köklerinden çürümeye başlar.

Sardunyanızın çiçeklenme dönemi dışında su ihtiyacını anlayabilmeniz için saksı toprağına elinizi batırmanız yeterli olacaktır. Eğer elinizi toprağa batırdığınızda nemli ise sulama yapmanıza gerek yoktur. Eğer kuru ise o zaman sulama yapabilirsiniz. Özellikle kış aylarında sulamasına dikkat edilmelidir. Soğuk musluk suyu vermekten kaçının. Oda sıcaklığında dinlendirilmiş su vermeniz bitkinin gelişimi açısından oldukça faydalı olacaktır.

Bir de kış aylarında verdiğiniz su miktarını azaltmalı, güneşli gün sayısının azaldığı kış günlerinde bitkinizin daha fazla güneş almasını sağlayacak yerlerde bulundurmanız gelişimi açısından oldukça faydalı olacaktır.

Sardunya Çiçeğinin Toprak İsteği Nasıldır?

Sardunya çiçeği gübre yönünden zengin toprakları sever. Toprağına biraz da kil karıştırırsanız veya killi toprak karışımı bulursanız bu sardunyanız için ideal bir toprak olacaktır. Çiçekçilerden ya da yapı marketlerden sardunya toprağı ya da killi gübreli karışımlı toprak olarak isterseniz temin edebilirsiniz.

Sardunya çiçeğinin sağlıklı gelişebilmesi için kuruyan dal ve çiçeklerini temizlememiz gerekmektedir. Kurumuş dallar bir makas yardımıyla bitkiye zarar vermeden dikkatli bir şekilde bitkiden ayrılmalıdır. Kuruyan ya da solan çiçekler varsa bunlar da temizlenmeli ve bitkiden ayrılmalıdır.

Sardunya Çiçeği Nasıl Çoğaltılır?

Bitkinin üretimi tohum ve çelikle yapılır. Tohumlar herhangi bir tohum kompostuna şubat ayında ekilir. Ortam sıcaklığının 16 - 18 C derecede bulundurulması durumunda 5- 10 gün içerisinde çimlenme görülür. Oluşan fideler 4-5 yapraklı olduklarında saksılara şaşırtılarak üretimi yapılmış olur.

Çelikle üretimde ise; çelikler ortalama 7.5 cm uzunluğunda olmak üzere, çiçek tomurcuğu taşımayan yan sürgünlerin uçlarından alınır. Çelikler fazla uzun değilse uçtaki son yaprak bırakılır. Çelikler birkaç saat kurumaya bırakılır. Alınan çelikler hacim olarak eşit miktarda turba ve kum veya perlit karışımına dikilir.

Welcome to the section on growing climbing roses.

The first thing we should clarify for those wanting to learn about rose growing is that this kind of rose does not behave like a climbing vine. A vine scrambles up and holds itself in place.

With roses, it is necessary to not only build trellis supports, but also to physically restrain the rose against those supports. Some roses with long arching canes will grow up into supports but for the most part, you’ll have to tie your climbing roses to the support you provide.

Let me suggest you use a thick or wide supporting tie as thin string will tend to cut into the bark creating other problems. Thick twine or plastic holding clips work adequately and do not damage bark or growing shoots.

Rules for Growing climbing Roses

The rules for growing climbing roses are pretty much the same as for any other kind of rose.

You want to ensure they do not suffer from water stress as the first symptom of water stress is a reduction in the number and quality of blooms produced.

You do want to use significant amounts of compost in the spring to both feed your rose and establish the microorganisms that will both protect and feed the rose throughout the summer. Generally, I throw three to four shovels of compost around the base of each climbing rose; I do not work it in but allow the earthworms to do accomplish this little garden chore for me. A task they willingly perform and enrich the garden soil even further in the process.

You do want to use compost tea on a regular basis throughout the summer to both feed roses and possibly provide an extra measure of disease protection.

Deadheading

Deadheading your climbing roses is also a useful exercise although with tall climbers this gardening practice is more practiced in the theoretical than in the practical sense. In other words, with a big climber – don’t worry about it unless you have little else to worry about.

Growing Roses Organically

Growing roses organically is not so very difficult if you follow a few of the simple rules below :

Compost

Get used to using compost as it is the key to great roses. Compost tea is the ideal solution to a wide variety of rose feeding problems and once you get the hang of making it, this is the way to go with organic culture. Compost and compost tea encourage the proliferation of beneficial microorganisms that will combat most rose problems.

Container Grown and organic roses are no more difficult. I use a weekly dose of fish emulsion to feed the rose and every two week application of compost tea in an attempt (likely futile) to keep the microorganisms alive in my containers. I note that chlorinated city water kills off all beneficial bacteria and fungi in container grown plants.

Compost Tea

I do water my rose leaves with compost tea to try to keep the beneficial bacterial and fungal populations high on the leaves. The hope here is that I’ll manage to have enough good guys to fight off most of the bad guys.

Plant Choice Importance

Plant choice is important. Given the choice of a rose that is susceptible to fungal infections such as blackspot or one that resists this disease, then the choice is obvious. Go with disease-resistant roses.

Avoid Chemicals

Avoid chemicals at all costs. A single dose of fungicide will wipe out all microorganisms on leaf surfaces. This means that the fast-reproducing bad guys will appear again before the slower-reproducing beneficials. By wiping out everybody, you’re guaranteeing the bad guys will reappear first and the leaves will be without protection. Use the fungicides recommended in articles on blackspot and mildews for growing roses organically.

Drips from the leaf surfaces that hit the soil will also kill off bacteria and fungi in the soil. These are the ones that are fighting disease off in the soil and helping to feed the plant. Fungicides are a quick way to set your plant on a slippery downhill slope.

Chemical Fertilizers

Avoid chemical fertilizers. The reliance on artificial sources of nitrogen is like feeding sugar candy as a main course. There’s a lot of activity afterwards but it really isn’t nutrition. Numerous studies have shown that plants fed artificial nitrogen have leaves that contain more sugars in them than organically fed plants.

This extra sugar attracts more pests (pests prefer sweet leaves to normal leaves). So growing roses organically means relying on compost and organic fertilizers to feed the soil first and let the soil organisms feed the roses.

Organic Insect Control & Growing Roses Organically

Use organic methods of insect control. There is a growing library of articles up on the sites that deal with a wide variety of pests using organic methods. From strong water jets for knocking aphids off bushes (when they hit the ground they become food for beetles). To soap to kill off others. To rotenone and diatomaceous earth for other pests along with iron phosphate controls for slugs, there are no rose pests that resist organic controls (you just have to figure out what the pest is and which control to use).

Kaktüs bitkisi; çok fazla çeşidi olan, genelde dayanıklı, kolay şekilde yetiştirilebilen bir bitkidir. Genelde çöllerde görmeye alıştığımız bitki, zor şartlarda da hayatını devam ettirebilme özelliğine sahiptir. Dikenleriyle bilinen kaktüsler türlerine göre de çok güzel çiçekler açabilmektedir. Hemen her boyda yetiştiriciliğini yapabileceğiniz kaktüsler bulunmaktadır. Her türünün ekolojik istekleri birbirine benzemektedir.

Yalnız dikkat edilmelidir ki bazı türlerinin dikenleri zehirli olabiliyor. Bu türlere dikkat edilmesi gerekir. Aksi halde elinizi değmeniz, elinize batması sonucu ufak tefek sıkıntılar çıkarabiliyor. Seçim yaparken bu konuya dikkat edilmesi gerekmektedir.

Ne kadar dikenli olsalar da aslında çok sevimli ve güzel görünümlü bitkilerdir. Hemen hemen her evde bulunur ve yetiştirilmesi çok kolaydır.

KAKTÜS BİTKİSİNİN BAKIMI VE SULANMASI :

Kaktüsler genelde susuzluktan değil de aşırı sulamaktan ölen bitkilerdir. Susuzluğa çok dayanıklı oldukları için fazla sulanmayı sevmezler. Bu yüzden dikkat edilmeli kaç gündür sulamadım diye fazla su verilmemelidir. Aşırı su kaktüs köklerinin çürümesine neden olmaktadır. Genel olarak suya ihtiyaç duydukları dönem ; büyüme dönemleridir. Bu dönemlerde ilkbahar yaz dönemleridir. Bu dönemlerde rahatça sulanabilirler ancak diğer dönemlerde kesinlikle dikkat edilmelidir. Genelde mart ayı sonlarında hafif sprey şeklinde sulanmalıdır. Nisandan mayıs ortalarına kadar 15 - 20 gün arayla devam edilir. Eylül başına kadar 1 -2 haftada bir şeklinde devam edilir. Tekrar azaltılarak ekim ayı başlarında sulama kesilir. Kışın birkaç gün haricinde sulanmaz. Buna çok dikkat edilmelidir. Çünkü bu dönemde sulanırsa kökleri çürüyebilir. Kaktüslerin suyu bünyesinde depo edebilme özelliğine sahip bitkiler olduğunu unutulmamalıdır.

Kaktüslere su verilirken tek şart iki sulama arasında toprağın tamamen kurumuş olmasıdır.

Sulamanın en iyi yapılacağı vakit günün erken saatleri ya da akşam üstüdür. Parlak ve çok güneşin olduğu zamanlarda sulama işlemi bitkileri yakabilir.

Aşırı soğuk ve rutubetli ortamlarda tutulan kaktüslerin gövdelerinde çürümeler meydana gelebilir. Eğer bu tür çürümeler olursa bu bölge kesilerek diğer bölge tekrar dikilebilir.

Bakımı Hakkında Pratik Bilgiler:

Evde, bir pencere kenarında bakmakta olduğunuz dikensiz bir tür, bir iki sene içinde yavaş yavaş tozlanmaya başlar. Toz birikimi zaman içinde kaktüsün ışık alışını engeller, bundan dolayı kaktüslerin temizlenmesi gerekir. Dikensiz türlerde bu işi bir fırça yardımıyla halledebilirsiniz, ama eğer dikenliyse, bu durumda bir saç kurutma makinesini 15 cm kadar uzaktan, (soğuğa ayarlı olarak) üfleterek tozu uzaklaştırabilirsiniz. Yaz döneminde hortumla yıkamak da düşünülebilir, ama bu işi sabah saatlerinde, güneş şiddetlenmemişken yapmak ve bitki kuruyana kadar gölgede tutmak gerekir. Aksi halde gövdede kalan su damlaları yanmaya neden olabilir. Yıkadığınız suyun kireçli olması halinde gövde üstünde beyaz lekeler oluşabilir.

Kaktüs bitkisi soğuk ve karanlık ortamları sevmeyen bir bitkidir. Bundan dolayı evde güneş alan bölgelerde yetiştirilmelidir. Özellikle güneş ışığı miktarının azaldığı kış aylarında bu konuya çok dikkat edilmeli, mümkünse kaktüsünüzü güneş gören pencere kenarına koymalısınız. Günde en az 6-7 saat güneş almalıdır.

Toprak isteği olarak hemen her tür toprakta yetişebilir. Ancak en güzel gelişimi geçirgenliği fazla olan topraklarda sağlarlar. Özellikle kumlu toprak karışımı varsa bu çok güzel bir tercih olacaktır. Sulama yaptığınızda bu toprak suyu daha iyi geçirerek tüm köklere yayacaktır.

Eğer saksı yetiştiriciliği yapıyorsanız saksı tabağında biriken suyu hemen boşaltmalısınız. Aksi halde kaktüs kökleri bu durumdan olumsuz etkilenecektir. 4-6 yıllık bir kaktüsünüz varsa saksı değişimi zamanı gelmiş demektir.

Kapalı Tohumluların Genel Özellikleri

Kapalı tohumlu bitkiler evrimsel bakımdan en iyi gelişmiş, en büyük bitki grubudur.

Günümüzde yaklaşık olarak 300 000 üyesi bulunmakta ve bu sayı her geçen gün artmaktadır.

Kapalı tohumlu bitkilerin kültürü yapılmakta olup ekonomik değeri fazladır. Bu bitki

grubu oluştukları andan beri diğer bitki gruplarına oranla daha gelişmiş özelliklere sahiptir.

Çünkü vegetatif ( kök, gövde, yaprak v.b. ) kısımları ortam koşullarına daha rahat uyum

sağlayabilmektedir. Kapalı tohumlu bitkilerin organları arasında iyi bir iş bölümü söz

konusudur. Döllenme ve tozlaşma güvence altındadır. Kapalı tohumlu bitkilerde erkek

gametin dişi gametle birleşmesi önce tozlaşma sonra da döllenme olayı ile gerçekleşir.

Tozlaşma, çiçek tozunun dişi organının üzerine konması olayıdır. Bu işlem için rüzgâr,

Kapalı Tohumlu Bitkiler

Kapalı tohumlu bitkiler için kısaca şu özellikleri sıralayabiliriz:

 Tohumları meyve içerisinde bulunduğundan ovaryum tarafından örtülmüştür.

 Odunsu ve otsu çeşitleri vardır.

 Çok yıllık olanların bazıları yaprağını dökerken bazıları yaprak dökmezler.

 Çenek sayısına göre tek çenekli ve çift çenekli diye ikiye ayrılırlar.

 Tohum oluşurken çift döllenme görülmektedir.

Kök

Bitkileri toprağa bağlayan ve topraktan su ve suda çözünmüş tuzları bitkiye sağlayan

kısımlardır. Kökler, bitkilerin toprak altındaki kısımlarıdır.

Köklerin üç önemli işlevi vardır.

 Bitkinin toprağa tutunmasını sağlar.

 Kökler, toprak tanecikleri arasındaki boşluklardan su ve madensel tuzları emer.

Köklerin emiş özelliği emici tüylerle artar. Emici tüyler kök ucunun hemen gerisinde büyür. Önemli maddelerin emilmesini sağlar.

 Kökler, bitkinin iletim sisteminin bir parçasıdır.

 Odun borusu, su ve madensel tuzları köklerden gövde ve yapraklara taşır.

 Soymuk borusu, besin maddelerini yapraklardan kök sisteminin her tarafına taşır.

 Bazı bitkilerde kök besin deposu görevi yapar ( havuç ).

Kökün dış yüzü epidermisle kaplıdır. Epidermsin altında dolgu dokusundan oluşan bir

canlı kabuk ve ortada iletim dokusu bulunmaktadır.

Primer ( ilk ) kök, tohumun çimlenmesi sırasında, embriyodaki kökçüğün gelişmesi ile

meydana gelmiş olan köktür. Bu kök ana kök hâlinde toprak içinde dikey olarak gelişir ve

yan dallar vererek toprak içinde dallanmış bir sistem oluşturur. Yan dallar taşıyan bir ana

kökten yapılmış olan bu kök sistemine kazık kök adı verilir.

Bitkilerin çoğunda çimlenmenin genç devresinde primer kökten sonra gövdenin tabanından birçok ek kök meydana gelir. Bu köklere saçak kök denir. Primer kökten sonra meydana gelen kökler bazen bitkide yardımcı eleman da olabilmektedir (sarmaşıkta tırmanmayı sağlamak gibi ). Bu şekilde oluşmuş köklere ise ek kökler adı verilir.

Kapalı Tohumlu Bitki Özellikleri

Gövde

Bitkinin yapraklarını ve çiçeklerini taşıyan organlardır. Bitkinin toprak üstünde

büyüyen esas destekleyici ve üst kısmıdır. Yapraklar, özümleme organlarıdır ve

düğümlerden (boğum) çıkar. Gövde üzerinde yaprakların bağlandığı noktaya düğüm (nodus), iki düğüm arasına da düğümler arası (inter nodus) adı verilir. Koruyucu pullarla kaplı olan tomurcuklar dal uçlarında tepe tomurcuğunu, yaprak koltuğunda ise yan tomurcukları oluşturur. Gövde, bitkinin iletim sisteminin bir parçasıdır. Kapalı tohumlu bitkilerde gövde çoğunlukla düz ve yüksek bir yapıda iken bazen de toprağa paralel yönelmektedir. Ayrıca toprak altında gelişen ve kökeni gövde olan organlar da mevcuttur. Bunlar rizom, yumru, soğan gibi adlarla anılırlar. Çok yıllık otsu bitkilerde bitkinin toprak altında devamlı olarak rizom, soğan gibi organlar vardır. Yarı çalımsı bitkilerde gövdenin alt kısmı odunludur ve canlıdır. Çalımsı bitkilerde gövde odunsudur ve bitkinin birçok gövdesi vardır. Ağaçlarda ise gövde odunsudur.

Yaprak

Yapraklar bitkilerde özümlemenin (bitkilerin güneş ışığı, su ve karbondioksit

kullanarak kendi besinlerini yapabilmeleri) ve transprasyonun (buharlaşma ile suyun

yitirilmesi) yapıldığı esas yerlerdir. Tipik bir yaprak, damar ağlarıyla desteklenmiş ince,

yassı bir aya, bir yaprak sapı ve sapın gövdeyle birleştiği yaprak tabanından ibarettir.

Yapraklar, ayanın tek bir birim hâlinde olduğu basit yapraklar ve ayanın birçok yaprakçıktan

meydana geldiği bileşik yapraklar olmak üzere iki sınıfa ayrılır. Bileşik yapraklar,

yaprakçıkların ana eksenin iki yanına dizilmiş biçimde ya da yaprakçıkların yaprak sapının ucundaki tek bir noktadan çıktığı elsi biçimde olabilir. Yapraklar, ayanın genel biçimi, ucu, kenarı ve tabanının şekline göre sınıflandırılabilir.

Çiçek

Tohumlu bitkilerin eşeysel üreme organlarına çiçek adı verilir. Başka bir deyimle

çiçek, yaprakları eşeysel üremeye hizmet için özel bir değişime uğramış kısa sürgünlerdir.

Çiçek, tohumlar aracılığıyla yeni bireylerin oluşmasını ve bitkinin devamını sağlar.Tam bir çiçekte; çiçek sapı, çiçek tablası, çanak yaprak, taç yaprak, erkek ve dişi

organlar vardır. Çiçek sapı çiçeği dala bağlar, çanak yaprak, taç yaprak, erkek ve dişi

organlar dıştan içe doğru sırayla dört halka şeklinde çiçek tablası üzerine dizilirler.

Çanak yaprak; genelde yeşil renklidir. Çiçeğin en dış kısmını oluşturur; tomurcuk

hâlindeyken çiçeği korur.

Taç yaprak; çiçeğin renkli ve kokulu kısmıdır. Tozlaşmada böcekleri çekerek

bitkinin çoğalmasında önemli rol oynar.

Erkek organ; ipçik denilen bir sap ile başçık denilen şişkin bir kısımdan meydana

gelmiştir. Başçıkta, içinde erkek üreme hücreleri (polen) bulunan çiçek tozu keseleri

bulunur. Polenler olgunlaşınca keseler çatlar ve polenler etrafa yayılır.

Dişi organ; yumurtalık, dişicik borusu ve tepecik olmak üzere üç kısımdan oluşur.

Yumurtalıkta çok sayıda dişi üreme hücresi (yumurta) bulunur. Dişicik borusu, tepeciği

yumurtalığa bağlayan dar kısımdır. Tepecikte çiçek tozlarının yapışmasını sağlayan yapışkan bir sıvı bulunur.

Erkek ve dişi organı bir arada bulunduran bitkilere “bir evcikli”, erkek ve dişi

organları ayrı bulunduran bitkilere de “iki evcikli” bitki denir. Meşe, mısır, çam, kestane ve

fındık bir evcikli, söğüt, Antep fıstığı, kenevir ve kavak iki evcikli bitkilerdir.

Meyve

Tozlaşma; erkek eşey hücrelerini içeren çiçek tozunun, erkek üreme organının bir

parçası olan anterden, dişi üreme organının bir parçası olan stigmaya taşınmasıdır. Tozlanma döllenmeden önce meydana gelir. Tozlaşma aynı çiçekte olabildiği gibi aynı türün farklı bireylerinin çiçekleri arasında da çapraz tozlaşma olabilmektedir. Tozlaşma böcek, rüzgâr yardımıyla olmaktadır. Bunun yanında tozlaşmaya kuşlar, yarasalar ve su da yardımcı olmaktadır.

Döllenme; erkek ve dişi eşey hücrelerin bir döllenmiş yumurta meydana getirmesidir.

Tozlaşmayla çiçek tozu dişi tepecik üzerine taşınır. Eşey hücrelerinin bir araya gelmesi için,

çiçek tozu çimlenir ve bir çiçek tozu tüpü meydana getirir. Bu tüp, aşağı doğru büyür ve

embriyo kesesine girer. Tüpün ucunda taşınan iki erkek gamet de embriyo kesesine girer.

Gametlerin biri yumurta ile birleşerek daha sonra embriyonu meydana getirecek olan zigotu

oluşturur. Diğer erkek gamet, besin deposu görevi yapan endospermayı meydana getirir.

Meyve tam gelişmiş ve olgunlaşmış yumurtalıktır. Yumurtalık, bitkinin dişi üreme

organının tohum oluşturan kısmıdır. Meyve sadece, çiçekli bitkilere özgü bir üründür. Çiçek

tozunun yumurtalığa erişerek yumurtayı aşılamasıyla birlikte hücresel çoğalma başlar.

Yumurtalık yavaş yavaş şişer ve sonunda meyve hâlini alır. Tüm meyveleri beslemekte olan

özsu meyveye de erişir. Özsu, olmakta olan meyveyi besler ve renklendirir. Meyveyi

tatlılaştıran da özsudur.

The summer flower bulbs listed below all bloom during the summer and you can access further information by clicking on the specific name

General Care Tips

In general though, summer bulbs want full sunshine. The odd exception is noted.

Summer flower bulbs also want decent soil for the most part.

While spring flowering bulbs will thrive in poor soil, no fertility to speak of and terrible conditions of heat and cold, summer bulbs are a little more precise in their requirements.

Good soil with compost added every spring is an excellent starting point for good summer bulbs.

And do remember that many of these bulbs have to be dug up and stored for the winter in cold climates.

These bulbs almost uniformly want excellent drainage. No bulb does really well in heavy clay soils or soils that hold moisture. The bulb rots. (I note that when a bulb rots, the gnashing and wailing from the gardener increases proportionally to the level of bulb death.)

Caring For Flower Bulbs

THEN YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM WHAT THEY WANT

Bulbs want full sunshine.

While there are a few that will tolerate shade for the most part, you’re going to find that a minimum of six full hot sun hours a day is the minimum to grow a great bulb. That’s always assuming you want them to live for years; if you only want a single season’s show, you can plant them anywhere.

Bulbs demand superb drainage.

The fastest way to kill most bulbs is to overwater them. Many bulbs are native to areas where summer rains are almost non-existent (tulips for example) and when we keep them well-watered in our summer gardens, they tend to rot away.

Bulbs require a period of growing their leaves after blooming.

So cutting off leaves before they go brown naturally is a surefire way to stop your bulbs from thriving. Similarly, tying up the leaves to get them out of the way is only marginally better. I’ll repeat this advice throughout the articles. You have to let those leaves produce enough energy so the bulb can develop a flower bud for the following season. Without that sunshine being stored up, there will be no flowers the next year.

It is pretty easy to understand why they are so popular: they are hardy, pest free, disease free, naturalize well, live for years with no work, multiply if left alone, and come in a wide variety of flower colors, heights, sizes and flower shapes.

You can grow them in the garden, in containers or force them indoors.

Squirrels and deer rarely, if ever, bother them and while pests will chew tulips to the ground, this bulb keeps blooming away. (they taste vile which is a good thing because they are poisonous.)

Recommended Varieties

If you're counting, you'll find the experts think there is somewhere around 26 species of wild narcissus. Now that depends of course on which expert you'ree talking to because they don't all agree on the divisions between plants. What we do know is that our garden narcissus have been hybridized for so long their specific parentage is almost impossible to determine. The divisions right now are:

And no matter what kind you want to force into early bloom, I'll assume you know how to put it into the pot (pointy end up) cover it with dirt (leave the neck uncovered) but you don't know about pre-chilling requirements.

This bulb comes in a wide variety of colors, ranging from the traditional yellow through white, orange-reds, oranges and salmon-pinks. You’ll also see different colors between the corona (the trumpet or cup shape) and the perianth (the petals)

All are quite hardy, to at least minus 10C, with the exception of the Tazetta species.

This bulb improves every spring in the garden landscape but sometimes you do have to do some maintenance to keep them happy.

You can plant them in containers, in natural settings, in formal settings, in rock gardens, you can use them as cut flowers if you can stand to take them out of your garden and you can easily force them for really early spring color.

This is the easiest bulb to grow and succeed with. If you can't grow this bulb, I'd recommend you try silk. (Well, clay soils will kill them because they do need good drainage.)

Şakayık bitkisi; basit veya katmerli beyaz ,pembe, kırmızı renklerde çiçek veren çok güzel bir süs bitkisidir. Genelde bahçe peyzajı için çok sık kullanılır. Dayanıklı bir bitki olarak bilinir. Bu özelliği sayesinde bahçelerde sık tercih edilen bitkilerdendir.

Katmerli rengarenk çiçekleri vardır. Nisan ayından başlayıp haziran sonlarına kadar çiçeklenebilme özelliğine sahip.

Şakayık Çiçeğinin Toprak İsteği:

Şakayık bitkisi toprak olarak humus bakımından zengin topraklarda güzel gelişim gösteriyor. Eğer evde saksıda yetiştiriciliğini yapacaksanız humus bakımından zengin toprak seçimi yapmalısınız. Ayrıca saksı drenajını da iyi yapmanız gerekmekte. Toprak karakteri olarak nemli toprakları sever. Toprağının aşırıya kaçmadan nemli kalmasını sağlarsanız bitkinizin gelişimi iyi olacaktır.

Bahçede yetiştiriciliğini yapacaksanız yine nemli, humus bakımından zengin toprak seçimi yapın. Toprağına yaprak ve odun çürüntüsü bulup ekleyebilirseniz toprağınız humus bakımından zenginleşecektir.

Şakayık Çiçeği

Şakayık Bakımı ve Su İsteği:

Sıcak ve ılıman iklimlerden hoşlanır. Güneşli yerleri sever.
Gayet yavaş büyürler.
Yüksekliği genellikle 1 m civarında olur.
Şakayık çiçeğinin kökü ve yaprakları ilaç olarak kullanılır.
3 günde bir belirli ölçekte ve aynı saatlerde su verilmesi gerekir. Sulamasını geciktirmemeye özen gösterilmelidir. Eğer saksıda yetiştiriyorsanız zamanında ve aynı ölçekte su kullanmaya özen gösterin.
Yaz aylarında daha sık sulama yaparken kış aylarında toprak nemine bakarak sulama yapmalısınız. Bunu anlamak için parmağınızı saksı toprağına batırın eğer nem oranı azalmışsa sulamasını yapabilirsiniz. Bitkilerin kışın su ihtiyaçları az olacağından aşırı sulama yapmamaya özen gösterin. Aksi halde bitkinizin kökleri aşırı sudan çürümeye başlayacaktır.
Soğuğu pek sevmeyen bir bitkidir. Bu yüzden evde oda sıcaklığında yetiştiriciliğini yapmalısınız. Güneşi seven bir bitki türüdür şakayık. Bu nedenle özellikle kış aylarında güneş alan yerlerde bulundurmanız gerekiyor. Aşırı soğuk ve aşırı sıcak ortamlardan da korumanız gerekiyor.

Şakayık çoğaltmak için en güzel yöntem aşılanmış, yumrulu şakayık çiçekleri tercih etmektir.

Tohum ve kalem aşı yöntemleri ile çoğaltılabilir. Tohumla üretim yalınkat çeşitlerde kullanılır. Ancak tohumla üretimde bitkinin büyüme hızı oldukça yavaştır ve 2 yılın sonunda çiçek açarlar. İlkbaharda soğuk yastıklara ekilirler. Tohumlar eğer birkaç yıllık ise birkaç saat suda bekletilmelidir sert kabuklarının yumuşaması için.

Küpe çiçeği ; çiçekleri aşağı dönük çok hoş kokuya sahip güzel bir süs bitkisidir. Adını da zaten şeklinden almıştır. Çiçekleri aşağı doğru sarkık ve küpe gibidir.

Çok yıllık bir süs bitkisidir. Genellikle saksılarda , açık havada yetişir. Bu bitki içeri alınmamalıdır. Hava şartları ne olursa olsun içeri alınmamalıdır. Eğer hava çok çok soğuksa ısı sıfırın altına düşmüşse kısa bir süreliğine alabilirsiniz ancak kesinlikle sıcak bir yere almayınız.

Bahar gelince budamasını güzelce yaparsanız , toprağını yadırgamayacağı saksıya dikerseniz size en güzel çiçeklerini sunacaktır.

Öncelikle, bu bitkinin bir dış mekan bitkisi olduğunu bilmelisiniz. Aşırı sıcak yerleri hiç sevmez. Açık havada kızgın güneş altında yaşayabilir, çiçek açabilir ama eğer balkonda yetiştiriyorsanız çok sıcak zamanlarda rüzgara açık bir yerde bulundurun. Sık sık yapraklarını ıslatın. Aksi takdirde ölür. Evde yaşamaz. İlle evde olsun istiyorsanız bu mümkün değildir. Zaman zaman en fazla bir günlüğüne ev içinde misafir edebilirsiniz. Küpe çiçeği havalar soğumaya başlayınca içeri alınır. Camekanlı bir balkon, bitkinin kışı sağlıkla geçirmesine yetecektir. Kış sonuna doğru küpe çiçeği derince budanır ve saksı değiştirilir. Çelikleri ayrı saksılara dikilerek yeni bitkiler elde edilebilir.

Her türlü toprakta yetişebilir. Ama gübre katsanız bile yıllarca saksılarda kullanılan aynı toprak iyi değildir. Toprağın drenajının iyi olması gerekir. Saksıda yetiştiriyorsanız saksının altında drenaj deliklerinin olmasına dikkat ediniz. Aksi halde sulama yaptığınızda fazlalık su bitkinin köklerine zarar verecektir. How to Grow Delphiniums

Delphiniums are tall, enchanting blooms with a unique form that come in many vibrant colours. They have become a permanent cottage fixture in England, and it is no wonder since they have been hand-pollinated and carefully selected for quality and flare in England since the early 20th Century. Another name for Delphinium is "Larkspur". These beautiful blooms add a touch of grace to any garden and make a wonderful bouquet of cut flowers that will last about seven days in a vase.

Delphiniums are often six to eight feet tall, but also come in dwarf varieties of about two feet tall. Dark green foliage is topped with upright, showy flowers. They have bold blooms of the three primary colours-red, blue, and yellow, as well as many blends and combinations. The flower itself has five sepals with three or four petals in the middle (commonly called "a bee"). Biennial and annual delphiniums are available, although perennials are the most common. Delphiniums prefer moist, cool places and blooming occurs in late spring.

Planting Delphiniums

Delphiniums grow best in full sun (six hours a day) away from wind, a like a lot of water in the summer. Be sure to plant in the spring. They can be grown in most soils with good drainage as long as it is fertile and nutrient rich.

Be careful when choosing a spot for delphiniums, as they are not easily moved.

Start with a good, fertile flowerbed and dig a hole twice the size of the plant pot and work in some bonemeal. Place the plant in the hole so the foliage is at ground level and recover with dirt, making sure the plant is positioned firmly. Water immediately and then daily until the plant has settled in.

Delphiniums should never be dry. Mulching may help retain water. Place delphiniums one to three feet apart.

Staking Delphiniums

You will need four bamboo cranes about four feet high for each plant, and some twine. You will find that many bamboo cranes will blend in with the colour of the stems. Make sure your delphiniums are thinned at least two feet high. Insert four bamboo cranes around the plant to form a square. Make the first tie about a foot off the ground to the stem of the plant. It is crucial to tie the stems, and not the tower of flowers. Make the second tie just below the flower spike, about two feet from the ground. If done properly, staking should not be obvious.

Delphinium Cultivation Tips

Pitfalls of germinating seeds include soaking the soil too much, attempting to grow old seeds, and planting the seed too deeply.
Thinning delphiniums annually is a must or the plant will exhaust itself blooming.
Cut all foliage and stems to ground level in the fall.
Slugs, snails and caterpillars love to feast on delphiniums. Try a bait, pick them off, or try sprinkling with cayenne pepper or cayenne pepper tea after every rainfall to deter them.
Remove hollow staking canes over winter so that pests can't live in them until spring.
Make sure your soil has good drainage because waterlogged soils will cause the crowns to rot away.
In the spring, apply some well-rotted compost around the plant followed by a layer of mulch. Alternatively, simply apply a well-balanced fertilizer.
After the first frost you may want to cut the stems back about two inches above ground level.
Divide mature and established plants every three years in the springtime.

When to Plant

Planting Gladiolas is a popular gardening project. The beautiful summer bulbs are colorful and brighten up any garden. However, they are not just for gardens, they also work great for a bouquet of flowers for your home or even a gift. Gladiolas require a great deal of care and a keen watchful eye.

Gladiolas thrive when specific conditions are met. They love humidity and warmer regions. They require consistent water and a well-tilled, rich soil. When should you plant gladiolas? Well, it depends on where you live. Check the package of your corm bulb and determine which zone you live in. Typically, when planting gladiolas, you plant the corm bulbs during the spring season, when any threat of frost has passed.

Gladiolas are extremely sensitive to any type of frost. Therefore, planting should wait until frost has passed and if you live in an area in which frost is a regular occurance, you will need to dig up the bulbs during the fall months, before the first frost, and store them in your home. For warmer, frost-free areas of the world, you can leave your gladiolas in the ground during the winter months.

Where to plant

You want to make sure that you choose an area of your yard that receives maximum sunlight. Full sun is best, however, if you cannot get away from a partial shade, your gladiolas will still grow. Gardenia is a genus of 142 species of flowering plants in the coffee family, Rubiaceae, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, southern Asia, Australasia and Oceania. Several species occur on Hawaii, where gardenias are known as naʻu or nānū.
The genus was named by Carl Linnaeus after Dr. Alexander Garden (1730-1791), a Scottish-born American naturalist.
They are evergreen shrubs and small trees growing to 1–15 metres (3.3–49 ft) tall. The leaves are opposite or in whorls of three or four, 5–50 centimetres (2.0–20 in) long and 3–25 centimetres (1.2–9.8 in) broad, dark green and glossy with a leathery texture. The flowers are solitary or in small clusters, white, or pale yellow, with a tubular-based corolla with 5-12 lobes (petals) from 5–12 centimetres (2.0–4.7 in) diameter. Flowering is from about mid-spring to mid-summer and many species are strongly scented.
Gardenia plants are prized for the strong sweet scent of their flowers, which can be very large in some species.
Gardenia jasminoides (syn. G. grandiflora, G. Florida) is cultivated as a house plant. This species can be difficult to grow because it originated in warm humid tropical areas. It demands high humidity to thrive and bright (not direct) light. It flourishes in acidic soils with good drainage and thrives on [68-74 F temperatures (20-23 C)] during the day and 60 F (15-16 C) in the evening. Potting soils developed especially for gardenias are available. G. jasminoides grows no larger than 18 inches in height and width when grown indoors. In climates where it can be grown outdoors, it can attain a height of 6 feet. If water hits the flowers, they will turn brown.
In Japan and China, Gardenia jasminoides is called Kuchinashi (Japanese) and Zhi zi (Chinese 梔子); the bloom is used as a yellow dye, which is used for clothes and food (including the Korean mung bean jelly called hwangpomuk).
In France, decades ago, Gardenia was the traditional flower which men wore sometimes as boutonnières on special occasions.
It is the national flower of Pakistan.
Jazz singer Billie Holiday was known to wear gardenias in her hair, one of her most noticeable features. She called them her trademark.

Although the lilies grown from seeds are more disease resistant, the only disadvantage with growing lilies from seeds is that the lily plants take a longer time to bloom, may be, in some cases, even five to six years. Hence, bulbs are very much preferred to grow lilies.

coming to perfection. I have known these to bloom beautifully in a room
that was very slightly heated--either over one in which there was fire,
or in an apartment next a stove room. If the weather is very cold, they
should be removed to a warmer room, until it moderates. The windows that
are open to the south are best. When the blossoms have matured, you can
bring them to the parlor; but if there is much heat, they will not
remain perfect so long as in a moderate room.

Roses are sometimes troubled with insects, which should be brushed off
with a feather, and the plants washed with a decoction of tobacco, (not
too strong,) they will not bloom when thus infested. There is another
insect that fastens itself to the bark of lemon trees, and other plants;
frequent washing with soap suds and brushing the sterns, removes it, and
some times wash the leaves with a sponge, when the weather is too cold
to put them out of doors. Setting them out in a warm rain, or watering
them well all over the foliage, is very reviving to plants. Be careful
to have pieces of old broken earthen-ware at the bottom of each pot, to
drain them, or the plants will not thrive. The earth should be sometimes
removed, and an occasional re-potting, is an advantage; being careful
not to disturb the roots. A mixture of charcoal and sand, and rich earth
of more than one kind is thought best. Earth fresh from the woods is
good for pot-plants, as well as borders, but should always be mixed with
a stronger soil. Roses that are planted round a house, should have a
deep and rich soil made for them, and they will then bloom beautifully
all the season.

Pot plants should in summer be placed in a situation where they wilt not
be exposed to intense heat. Some persons place their pots in the earth
on the north side of the house; others keep them in a porch where they
can get some sun. They require much more water in summer. The wax plant
blooms beautifully in summer, and should be kept in a sheltered
situation, not exposed to the wind; it should have a strong frame of
wood and wire to run on, well secured in a tub or box. Hyacinths and
crocuses should be planted in pots, boxes, or small tubs, in rich earth,
in October or November; a small painted tub is very suitable, and will
hold a dozen hyacinths, and as many crocus roots. The most beautiful I
ever saw in a window, were planted in this way, by keeping some in the
sun, and others in the shade you can have a succession of blooms, they
are also pretty in root glasses, but this plan will exhaust the roots.
After blooming in the house, they should be planted in the garden. The
same roots will not answer the next year for parlor culture, they
increase very fast in the garden by proper care.

Climbing Roses

Climbers and ramblers are distinctive in that they grow very long, pliable canes. That's the only thing that sets this variety apart. Some bloom once in a season while others bloom continuously. The type of flower created by climbing roses varies as greatly as the whole family of roses, with some being very small while others are large. Some have just a few petals while others have several. The only thing they have in common is their ability to cover fences and walls, adding vertical beauty to any garden. They can be trimmed back in areas with very cold winters. These roses are not recommended for areas below zone 6. If you're in one of the colder zones, plant your climbing roses in a container that you can bring indoors, or plan to wrap insulate them in the winter. Wait until the ground has thawed and new leaf buds begin to open before fertilizing.

Antique Roses

Although hybridization and cross-breeding are natural occurrences, it is generally agreed that all roses grown before 1867--when the first hybrids were accepted, named and acknowledged by science--are officially "old garden roses." Also called heirloom roses, this family of roses includes wild roses, the ancestors of all rose cultivars. Old garden roses don't require heavy pruning, but after they've reached 3 years old, they can tolerate it. Enthusiasts recommend gentle pruning throughout the growing season, including the removal of dead flower heads, diseased branches, small branches or branches that are growing in the wrong direction, crossing the main stem.

Floribundas

If you suspect this word is a combination of "abundant" and "floral" then you might be on to something. These hybrid rose bushes bloom in clusters nonstop throughout the flowering season. These roses do well in wet climates, but some varieties don't handle winters well. To encourage more blooms, trim off the dead flower heads periodically. Fertilize frequently throughout the growing season and avoid a hard pruning. If you live in an area with very cold winters, pay attention to the zoning advice for your floribunda variety, some aren't as cold-hardy as others.

Hybrid Teas

The hybrid tea, also called the modern rose, is agreed to be the first deliberate cross-breed of roses. Found naturally occurring through Europe, they didn't gain much attention until Henry Bennett, an English farmer, deliberately bred them through artificial cross-pollination and presented them to the public. Hybrid teas take on characteristics of the tea rose, generally an abundance of petals, buds that bloom in bunches and a profuse blooming period, with characteristics of other roses, depending upon how they're bred. The high center of the flower head and the presence of sprays of flowers is typical of a hybrid tea. Most varieties are very fragrant, low-growing and winter hardy. The old garden teas have stalks that sometimes can't hold the weight of the flowers, resulting in droopy blooms. One of the "selling points" of these early hybrids was that the stems were strong.

Polyanthas

Often mistakenly called tea roses, the polyanthas are small rose bushes with bunches of tiny flowers. Most of these are in shades of pink and red, but white, yellow and orange polyanthas have been introduced. The polyantha family is a hybrid, with new varieties still being introduced. Since there are over 500 varieties of polyantha, the care instructions vary greatly. Generally, they do not require pruning and are winter hardy. Check your specific variety, however, and be aware of your growing zone.

Miniature Roses

Miniatures, roses with smaller flowers, generally grow shorter than other varieties, usually 12 to 36 inches tall, making them ideal for the edge of the garden or under a window. Some are climbing and can be grown as ground cover or trained to a low fence or wall. They do not require pruning, but clipping spent flower heads will encourage a longer blooming season. They grow well in pots. They are cold-hardy, making them an excellent choice for colder climates. To make matters more confusing, some varieties of miniatures, like the Hurdy Gurdy, a climber, can grow very tall. Kitty Belendez, of the Santa Clarita Valley Rose Society, has one that's reached a height of over 8 feet tall. She states that miniatures are the easiest rose to grow because they require very little care. They generally need lots of sunshine, one hard pruning before the winter and periodic deadheading. If you wish to fertilize, make sure that the soil is wet . Repot miniature roses as needed if they're not planted in the ground.
