Beware of Ghuloo (going to extremes and crossing the limits) in the Deen of Allaah

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

« وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْغُلُوَّ فِي الدِّينِ، فَإِنَّمَا أَهْلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمُ الْغُلُوُّ فِي الدِّينِ »

“Beware of ghuloo in the Deen, for indeed those who came before you were only destroyed by ghuloo in the Deen.” [1]

Shaykhul-Islaam Ibnu Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said regarding this hadeeth: “ – (This) is general in regards to every type and category of Ghuloo, in I’tiqaad (the matters of ‘Aqeedah) and in actions. And Ghuloo (is): going beyond and exceeding the limits by increasing something in its praise, or dispraise, beyond what it rightfully deserves, and the like of that.” [2]

Al-Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said: “Allaah did not order with a command except that shaytaan has an avenue to incite evil in it, either towards negligence and wastefulness, or towards excessiveness and extremism (ghuloo). And the Deen of Allaah is in the middle between abandonment and neglect, and excessiveness and extremism, like the valley between two mountains. And al-Hudaa (guidance) is between two ways of misguidance, and the middle ground between two sides that are dispraised. So just like abandoning the command is squandering it and throwing it away, so then excessiveness and extremism in it is to corrupt and ruin it. This one is by falling short of the limits, and this one is by going beyond the limits.” [3]

And Shaykhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah said: “And whoever seeks to get close to Allaah by what is not from the hasanaat that have been commanded, (not) by a command of obligation nor (a command) of recommendation, then he is astray, following the shaytaan, and his path is from the paths of shaytaan…” [4]

And this is what leads to bid'ah and deviation.

Allaah said in His Book:

ﭺ ﭻ ﭼ ﭽ ﭾﭿ ﮀ ﮁ ﮂ ﮃ ﮄ ﮅ ﮆﮇ ﮈ ﮉ ﮊ ﮋ ﮌ

"And verily, this is my Straight Path, so follow it, and do not follow (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path. This He has ordained for you so that you may have Taqwaa." [5]

‘Abdullaah bin Mas’ood said [6]: The Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) drew a line for us (on the ground), then he said:

« هَذَا سَبِيلُ اللَّهِ »

“This is the Path of Allaah.”

Then he drew lines on it’s right and on it’s left, then he said:

« هَذِهِ سُبُلٌ مُتَفَرِّقَةٌ - عَلَى كُلِّ سَبِيلٍ مِنْهَا شَيْطَانٌ يَدْعُو إِلَيْهِ »

“These are the other paths – on every one of them is a shaytaan calling to it.”

Then he recited this aayah.

And Allaah said in His Book:

ﭑ ﭒ ﭓ ﭔ ﭕ ﭖ ﭗ ﭘ ﭙ ﭚ ﭛ ﭜ ﭝ ﭞ ﭟ ﭠ ﭡ ﭢ ﭣ ﭤ ﭥ ﭦ ﭧ

“Say (O Muhammad): ‘O Ahlul-Kitaab! Do not go to extremes and exceed the limits in your deen (by believing in something) other than the Haqq, and do not follow the vain desires of people who went astray in times gone by, and who misled many, and strayed (themselves) from the Right Path.’" [7]

Ibnul-Mundhir, Ibn Abee Haatim, and Aboosh-Shaykh reported from Qataadah regarding the meaning of Allaah’s statement ﭓ ﭔ ﭕ ﭖ “Do not go to extremes and exceed the limits in your deen”: Qataadah said that it means: “do not innovate.”

So this aayah, even though it is addressed to Ahlul-Kitaab specifically, the Salaf have explained that it is general for all those who go to ghuloo from this Ummah, from the people of Bid’ah, and those who go beyond the boundaries of the Sharee’ah in their worship of Allaah.

Protecting the Home by Recitation of the Qur'aan

Aboo Hurayrah رضى الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Do not make your homes like graveyards, indeed shaytaan avoids the home in which Sooratul-Baqarah is read.” [1]

Ibn Mas’ood رضى الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Verily everything has a high point, and the highest point of the Qur’aan is Sooratul-Baqarah, and verily shaytaan, if he hears Sooratul-Baqarah recited, he leaves the house in which Sooratul-Baqarah is recited.” [2]

And the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Recite Sooratul-Baqarah in your homes, for indeed shaytaan does not enter a house in which Sooratul-Baqarah is recited in.” [3]

Aboo Mas’ood narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever recites the two verses from the end of Sooratul-Baqarah in a night, they will suffice him.” [4]

‘Uqbah bin ‘Aamir narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Recite these two aayaat that are at the end of Sooratul-Baqarah, for indeed my Lord gave them to me from under the ‘Arsh.” [5]

And the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “(( Qul Huwal-llaahu Ahad )) and the Mu’awwidhatayn [Sooratul-Falaq and Sooratun-Naas] when you reach evening and when you reach the morning 3 times suffice you from everything.” [6]

Hafs bin Ghayaath al-Hanafee narrated that Aboo Hurayrah رضى الله عنه said: “Indeed the home becomes spacious for its inhabitants, and the Angels visit it and the shayaateen abandon it, and its goodness is increased if the Qur’aan is recited in it. And indeed the home becomes narrow and restricted upon its inhabitants, and the Angels abandon it and the shayaateen visit it, and its goodness is decreased if the Qur’aan is not recited in it.” [7]

Aayatul-Kursee

And the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever reads Aayatul-Kursee at the end of every obligatory salaah, nothing prevents him from entering Jannah except that he dies.” [8]

Aboo Hurayrah رضى الله عنه said: “The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم ordered me to guard the Zakaah of Ramadaan, then somebody came to me and started stealing from the foodstuff. So I caught him and said, ‘I will take you to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم!’” Then he described the whole narration and said: “He (that person) said (to me), ‘When you go to your bed, recite Aayatul-Kursee [9], for then there will be a guard from Allaah who will protect you all night long, and shaytaan will not be able to come near you until you reach the morning." The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said (to me), "He told the truth, and he is a liar. That was shaytaan." [10]

The Virtue - & Protection - awarded to the one who says Laa ilaaha illallaah, wahdahu laa shareeka lahu....

Aboo Hurayrah رضى الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: ”Whoever said:

« لاَ إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ المُلْكُ وَلَهُ الحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ »

((There is nothing that deserves to be worshipped in truth except Allaah, He is Alone and has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things)) After he prays the morning prayer (al-ghadaah) ten times, Allaah عزوجل writes for him 10 hasanaat and removes from him 10 sayyiaat, and raises him 10 darajaat, and he gets the equivalent of freeing 2 slaves from the offspring of Ismaa’eel, and if he says it when he reaches evening, he gets the like of thatو and for him is a hijaab (barrier) from shaytaan until he reaches morning.” [1]

And in another wording, he - صلى الله عليه وسلم - said:

”Whoever said:

((There is nothing that deserves to be worshipped in truth except Allaah, He is Alone and has no partner, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things)) 100 times in a day, he will get a reward equal to freeing ten slaves, and one-hundred good deeds will be written for him, and one-hundred bad deeds will be removed from him, and he will be protected from shaytaan on that day until he reaches the evening, and nobody will come with something superior to what he came with, except one who has done more than that." [2]

Seeking refuge in Allaah when angry

1) Sulaymaan bin Surad said: Two men insulted one another in front of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, so one of them began to get angry and his face became red. So the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم looked at him, then said: “Indeed I know a statement that if he said it, what afflicted him would go away:

« أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ »

(( I seek refuge in Allaah from the accursed shaytaan )) [1]

2) Aboo Hurayrah رضى الله تعالى عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The strong man is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while angry." [2]

3) ‘Imraan bin Husayn رضى الله تعالى عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If you become angry, then sit down.” [3]

4) Ibn ‘Abbaas رضى الله تعالى عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If one of you becomes angry, then let him remain silent." [4]

5) And the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If one of you becomes angry, and he is standing, then he should sit down until the anger leaves him, and if not, then he should lie down." [5]

6) And the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If a man becomes angry, then he says:

« أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ »

(( I seek refuge in Allaah )) his anger while subside.” [6]

The Du’aa when a person feels pain in their body

‘Uthmaan bin Abeel-‘Aas ath-Thaqafee said that he complained to the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم of a pain he felt in his body since the time he accepted Islaam. So the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said to him: “Place your hand on the place on your body where the pain is, and say ((Bismillaah )) 3 times, and then say 7 times:

« أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ »

((I seek refuge in Allaah and His complete power and ability from the evil of what I feel and am wary of )) [7]

Our shaykh, Shaykh Taariq as-Subay’ee said: this is a tremendous du’aa.

Seeking Protection from shaytaan when entering the Masjid

‘Abdullaah bin ‘Amru bin al-‘Aas reported from the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that when he would enter the masjid he said:

« أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ، وَبِوَجْهِهِ الْكَرِيمِ، وَسُلْطَانِهِ الْقَدِيمِ، مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ »

(( I seek refuge in Allaah al-‘Atheem, and by His Noble Face, and His Eternal Sovereignty, from the accursed shaytaan ))

He صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If he said that, shaytaan says: ‘He is protected from me for the rest of the day.’ [1]

The Prohibition of sitting half in the sun and half in the shade

1) Aboo Hurayrah رضى الله عنه said: Abool-Qaasim صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “If one of you was sitting in the sunlight”, and Makhlad said: “in the shadow, so the shade that is over him moves away from him, and part of him is in the sun and part (of him) is in the shade, then let him get up (and move).” [2]

2) And in another narration: He prohibited that one sit between the sunlight and the shade, and he said: “It is the sitting of shaytaan.” [3]

3) Qays bin Abee Haazim narrated from his father that he said: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم saw me and I was sitting in the sun, so he said: “Move to the shade.”

In the wording of Aboo Daawood (#4822), Qays reported that his father narrated that he came and the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم was giving a khutbah, so he stood in the sun, so he ordered him to move to the shade. [4]

Protecting the Utensils and Home before going to bed

Jaabirرضى الله عنه reported Allaah's Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم as saying: “Cover the vessel, tighten the waterskins, close the doors and extinguish the lamps, for shaytaan does not loosen the waterskin, does not open the door, and does not uncover the vessels. And if one of you doesn’t find (something) to cover it with except placing over his vessel (a piece of) wood (to cover it) and to mention the name of Allaah, then let him do so, for indeed the pests (mice) may set the house on fire over its inhabitants." [5]

Yawning is from shaytaan

Aboo Hurayrahرضى الله تعالى عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “at-Tathaa’ub (yawning) is from shaytaan, so when one of you yawns then let him suppress it as much as possible.” [6]

Suhayl bin Abee Saalih said: I heard a son of Aboo Sa’eed al-Khudree narrate to my father from his father [i.e. from Aboo Sa’eed]: the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “When one of you yawns, then let him cover his mouth with his hand, for indeed shaytaan enters.” [7]

And in another wording: “If one of you yawns in the Salaah, then let him suppress it as much as he is able, for indeed shaytaan enters.”

Aboo Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said “If one of you yawns, then let him repel it as much as possible, for indeed, one of you, if he says “haa” (makes sounds when he yawns), shaytaan laughs at him.” [8]

In another wording with al-Bukhaaree: "Verily Allaah loves sneezing and hates yawning, so if one of you sneezes and he praises Allaah, it is a right upon every muslim who hears him to say:

يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ

(( May Allaah have mercy upon you )).

As for yawning, then indeed it is only from shaytaan, so if one of you yawns let him repel it as much as possible, for indeed when he yawns, shaytaan laughs at him.”

Al-Haafith Ibn Hajr رحمه الله said:

“And in regards to the meaning of placing the hand over the mouth is placing the garment and the like of it from what achieves that intent (over ones mouth), but the hand is only specified if yawning is not repelled without it. And there is no difference in this issue between the one praying and other than him. Rather it is stressed in the situation of the salaah as has preceded, and that it is excluded from the prohibition of the one praying placing his hand on his mouth. And from what the one who is yawning is commanded with if he was in the salaah, is that he withhold from recitation until it leaves him lest his recitation change. And Ibn Abee Shaybah traced the like of that back from Mujaahid and ‘Ikrimah and the Taabi’een.”

A forgotten sunnah of ‘Eed: Praying Two Rak’ah after returning from the ‘Eed prayer [1]

Aboo Sa’eed al-Khudree (رضى الله تعالى عنه) said: “The Messenger of Allaah ( صلى الله عليه و سلم) used to not pray anything before the ‘Eed (prayer), then when he returned to his home he prayed two rak’ah.”
It was collected by Ibn Maajah [2] and declared hasan by Shaykh al-Albaanee, Ahmad in "al-Musnad" [3], Aboo Ya’laa [4] and Ibn Khuzaymah [5], and he brought a chapter heading: “Chapter: The desirability of praying in the home after returning from the Musallaa.”

And Shaykh al-Albaanee declared it hasan in “al-Irwaa’” [6] and he said:
“And the reconciliation between this hadeeth and the ahaadeeth that have preceded, negating salaah after the ‘Eed (prayer) [7] is that the negation only covered salaah in the Musallaa, just as al-Haafidh (Ibn Hajar) stated in “at-Talkhees” [8], and Allaah knows best.”

And it was reported by al-Haakim [9] who said: “This is a precious Sunnah, by an isnaad (chain) that is saheeh and they (al-Bukhaaree and Muslim) did not collect it.” And al-Haafidh declared in hasan in “al-Fath” [10] and in “Buloogh al-Maraam” [11].

The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

(( خَيرُ الدُّعَاءِ : دُعَاءُ يَومِ عَرَفَةَ ، وَ خَيرُ مَا قُلْتُ أَنَا وَ النَّبِيُّونَ مِنْ قَبْلِي : لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ ، وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ ، لَهُ المُلكُ ،

وَ لَهُ الحَمدُ ، وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَدِيرٌ ))

"The best du'aa is the du'aa on the Day of 'Arafah, and the best thing that I and the Prophets before me said is:

'Laa ilaaha illallaah, wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahul-Mulku

wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'alaa kulli shayin qadeer'."

Protection when stopping in a different home or place, and when reaching morning and evening

1) Sa’d bin Abee Waqqaas said: I heard Khawlah bint Hakeem as-Sulamiyyah say: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: “Whoever stops (and stays) at a home, then says:

« أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ »

(( I seek refuge by the complete, perfect words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created )) Nothing will harm him until he leaves from that home.” [1]

2) Aboo Hurayrah said: A man came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم and said: “O Messenger of Allaah! I was stung by a scorpion last night.” He said: “If you had said when you reached the evening (just before Maghrib):

« أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ »

(( I seek refuge by the complete, perfect words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created )) it would not have harmed you.” [2]

3) “Whoever says 3 times at the time he reaches the evening:

« أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ »

(( I seek refuge by the complete, perfect words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created )) he will not be harmed by a snakes bite during that night.” [3]

Suhayl said: “So our people used to learn it (this du'aa), so they used to say it every night, then a slave-girl from amongst them was stung, so she didn’t suffer any pain.” [4]

4) Abaan bin ‘Uthmaan said: I heard ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan saying: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “There is no slave who says in the morning of every day (before sunrise) and the evening of every night (before sunset):

« بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ العَلِيمُ »

(( In the Name of Allaah, with Whose name nothing in the earth and nothing in the heavens can cause harm, and He is As-Samee (The all-Hearing), al-‘Aleem (The All-Knowing) )) -three times – except that nothing will harm him.” [5]

Allaah states in His Book:

“And certainly, We will test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to as-Saabireen (to the patient), those who when afflicted with a museebah (calamity) they say: "Truly! To Allaah we belong and truly to Him we shall return." They are the ones on whom are the Salawaat from their Lord, and (they are those who) receive His Mercy, and it is they who are the ones who are rightly guided.”

[al-Baqarah (2):155-157]

Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “Allaah states that the mu’min, if he submits the affair to Allaah, and returns and withdraws at the time of the calamity, He writes for him 3 characteristics from goodness – (mentioned in this aayah)- : as-salaah from Allaah, and ar-Rahmah, and attaining the path of hudaa (guidance).” [1]

The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

(( وإِنّما الأَعمال بالخَواتِيم ))

"Verily the actions are judged in accordance with those his life is sealed with"

بسم الله و الحمد لله، والصلاة والســلام على رسول الله و على آله وصحبه أجمعين

أما بعد

Allaah the Most High said:

{ يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ادْخُلُوا فِي السِّلْمِ كَافَّةً

وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا خُطُوَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ }

"O you who believe! Enter perfectly in Islaam and do not follow the footsteps of shaytaan. Verily! He is to you a plain enemy." [Al-Baqarah (2):208]

{ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لِلْإِنْسَانِ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ }

"Verily! shaytaan is to man an open enemy!" [Yoosuf (12):5]

And Allaah (تبارك و تعالى) consistently warns us from our enemy throughout His Book, and likewise His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in the authentic Sunnah, warning us from the plots and deception of shaytaan and his followers - from both the jinn and mankind - like the people of shirk, kufr, and bid'ah.

And the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

« إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَجْرِي مِنَ الإِنْسَانِ مَجْرَى الدَّمِ »

“Verily shaytaan runs through the human being like the running of blood.” [1]

And Al-Haafith Ibn Hajr (رحمه الله) said regarding this hadeeth: “And his saying ((he penetrates)) or ((he runs)), it is said that it is on its apparent meaning, and that Allaah the Most High gave him the ability to do that, and it is said that it is figurative, referring to the abundance and tremendous amount of his misguidance, enticements, and his whisperings.” [al-Fath (4/1982)]

So there is no doubt that shaytaan is an enemy who does not cease to attack the believer with doubts, confusion, and whisperings, constantly prodding him towards that which will misguide him and lead to his destruction. But the remedy for these attacks have been prescribed for us by Allaah and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم). Allaah says:

{ وَإِمَّا يَنْزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ * إِنَّ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا إِذَا مَسَّهُمْ طَائِفٌ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ تَذَكَّرُوا فَإِذَا هُمْ مُبْصِرُونَ }

"And if an evil whisper comes to you from shaytaan, then seek refuge with Allaah. Verily, He is All-Hearer, All-Knower. Verily, those who have Taqwaa (of Allaah), when an evil thought comes to them from shaytaan, they remember (Allaah), and (indeed) they then see (aright)." [Al-A'raf (7):200-201]

So with the permission of Allaah, we would like to present a series of posts reminding Ahlus-Sunnah of some of those adhkaar and ad'iyyah found in the authentic Sunnah of our Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم that the sunnee, the atharee can use to protect himself from the plots and whisperings of shaytaan and other types of harm.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم Protecting Himself from the shayaateen

Ja’far bin Sulaymaan ad-Duba’ee narrated: Aboo at-Tayyaaj narrated to us, he said: “I said to ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Khanbash at-Tameemee – and he was an old man – ‘did you reach the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم (during his lifetime)?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘So I said: How did the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم act on the night the shayaateen plotted against him?’ So he said: ‘Indeed the shayaateen descended that night upon the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم from the valleys and mountain paths, and amongst them was a shaytaan, in his hand was a flame of fire, wanting to burn the face of Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم with it. So Jibreel - عليه السلام - descended to him and said: ‘O Muhammad! Say:

« أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ الَّتِي لَا يُجَاوِزُهُنَّ بَرٌّ وَلَا فَاجِرٌ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ، وَذَرَأَ وَبَرَأَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَعْرُجُ فِيهَا، وَمِنْ شَرِّ ما ذَرَأَ فِي الأَرضِ وَبَرَأَ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ ما يَخرُجُ مِنها، وَمِنْ شَرِّ فِتَنِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ، وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ طَارِقٍ إِلَّا طَارِقًا يَطْرُقُ بِخَيْرٍ، يَا رَحْمَنُ »

(( I seek refuge by the complete, perfect words of Allaah, which no righteous one nor wicked one can exceed, from the evil of what He has created, and from the evil of what descends from the heavens, and from the evil of what ascends to them, and from the evil of what is sown in the earth and is created, and from the evil of what comes out from it, and from the evil of the fitan of the night and the day, and from the evil of everyone who comes knocking, except for the one who comes knocking with khayr, O Rahmaan! ))

So it (this du’aa) extinguished their fire, and Allaah تبارك و تعالى defeated them.” [2]

Protecting Oneself when entering the bathroom

1) ‘Alee said: The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “The screen of what is between the jinn and the ‘awrahs of the Children of Aadam when he enters the bathroom, is that he says:

« بِسْمِ اللَّهِ »[3]

2) Anas bin Maalik said: “The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to, when he entered the bathroom, he said:

« اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الخُبُثِ وَالخَبَائِثِ »

(( O Allaah! Verily I seek refuge in You from al-khubuthi wal-khabaa’ith (the male and female shayaateen) )) [4]

Shu’bah narrated: “If he comes to the bathroom…”, and Moosaa narrated from Hammaad: “When he enters…”, and Sa’eed bin Zayd said, ‘Abdul-‘Azeez narrated to us: “When he wants to enter…”.

3) In another wording collected by at-Tirmidhee:

« اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ ....»

((O Allaah! Verily I seek refuge in You…)) Shu’bah said: and indeed he said another time:

« أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبِيثِ - أَوِ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ »

(( I seek refuge in Allaah from al-khubthi wal-khabeeth )) – or – (( al-khubuthi wal-khabaa’ith )) [5]

The 10 Days of Dhil-Hijjah

Know-baarakAllaahu feekum- that the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best and most virtuous days of the year –for both the pilgrim and those who stay behind. They are days of striving to gain closeness and proximity to Allaah and seeking His Mercy and Forgiveness. They are days of Salaah, and Zakaah/Sadaqah, du'aa and the remembrance of Allaah, sincere repentance, and all other virtuous deeds.

Allaah swore by these days in His saying:

} وَالْفَجْرِ * وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ {

"By the Dawn, and by the Ten Nights." [1]

And the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

(( أَفضَلُ أَيَّامِ الدُّنيَا أَيَّامُ العَشْرِ ))

"The best days in the dunyaa are the ten days." [2]

And the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

(( مَا مِنْ أَيَامٍ العَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ فَيهَا أَحَبُّ إَلَى اللهِ مِن أيامِ العَشرِ ))

قَالُواْ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ! وَ لاَ الجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ؟

قال: (( و لاَ الجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ؛ إِلاَّ رَجُلٌ خَرَجَ بِنَفسِهِ وَ مَالِهِ ، فَلَمْ يَرْجِعْ مِن ذَلِكَ بِشَيءٍ ))

" There are no days during which good righteous deeds are more beloved to Allaah than the ten days (the first ten days of Dhil-Hijjah)."

So the Companions asked: "Not even Jihaad in the Path of Allaah?"

He said: "Not even Jihaad in the Path of Allaah, except for a man who goes out with his person and his wealth, and comes back with nothing." [3]

During these days it is recommended to increase in making takbeer, tahleel, and tamheed, and to increase in all types of righteous deeds, like prayer, fasting, giving in charity and so on.

'Arafah:

And from these righteous actions is fasting the Day of 'Arafah. The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

((يُكَفَّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ ، وَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي بَعْدَهُ ))

"It expiates (the sins) of the previous year, and the following year." [4]

All of the evil deeds you did, all of the sins you committed against yourself – of the past year and the year to come – wiped away by fasting this one day!!

And this fast is for those who remained behind, as fasting the Day of 'Arafah by those who are at 'Arafah is not from the guidance of the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) and his Companions. 'Abdullaah bin 'Umar (Radiyallaahu 'anhumaa) was asked about fasting the Day of 'Arafah by those at 'Arafah. He said: "I made Hajj with the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) and he did not fast it, and with Aboo Bakr and he did not fast it, and with 'Umar and he did not fast it, and 'Uthmaan and he did not fast it. And I do not fast it, nor do I order it, nor do I prohibit it." [5]

The Day of an-Nahr:

Of these 10 blessed days is the Day of an-Nahr, or 'Eedul-Adhaa. The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

(( إَنَّ أَعْظَمَ الأَيَّامِ عِندَ اللهِ تَبارَكَ وَ تَعالَى يَومُ النَّحْرِ ، ثُمَّ يَومُ القَرَِّ ))

"Verily the greatest of Days with Allaah- the Blessed and Most High- is the Day of Sacrifice, then the Day of Rest [following it]." [6]

This day commemorates the day in which Ibraaheem ('Alayhis-Salaam) was instructed by Allaah to sacrifice his firstborn son Ismaa'eel ('Alayhis-Salaam) –and Allaah, out of His great expansive mercy and kindness – gave in his place a ram. So on this day, in commemoration of the sacrifice of Ibraaheem ('Alayhis-Salaam), it is upon those who have the means to sacrifice a camel, cow, sheep or goat.

The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:

(( مَنْ كَانَ لَهُ سَعَةٌ وَ لَم يُضَحِّ فَلاَ يَقْرَبَنَّ مُصَلاَّنَا ))

"Whoever has the means, and does not sacrifice,

should not approach our musallaa." [7]

And the one who has the ability and intends to sacrifice an animal, then he is not to cut his hair and nails, from the first day of Dhul-Hijjah up until after he sacrifices.

And Allaah has made the days of An-Nahr and at-Tashreeq (the 3 days that follow it) days of eating and drinking.

The Takbeeraat:

From the day of 'Arafah (9^th of Dhil-Hijjah) up until the 'Asr prayer on the 13^th day of Dhil-Hijjah, after the Salaah, we make the takbeeraat.

Ibn Abee Shaybah reported that 'Alee (Radiyallaahu 'anhu) used to make the takbeer beginning after the Fajr prayer on the Day of 'Arafah, up until after the 'Asr prayer on the last day of Tashreeq (the 13^th day of Dhil-Hijjah). As for the wording of the Takbeer, then there is nothing authentically reported from the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam). Rather, what we find is the 'Abdullaah bin Mas'ood (Radiyallaahu 'anhu) used to say:

Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illallaah,

wallaahu akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa lillaahil-Hamd [8]

And Ibn 'Abbaas (Radiyallaahu 'anhumaa) used to say:

Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa lillaahil-Hamd.

Allaahu Akbar wa ajalla, Allaahu Akbar 'alaa ma hadaanaa. [9]

So it is upon us to exert ourselves in obedience to Allaah during these 10 blessed days, from their beginning till their end; increasing in our salaah, trying to fast the Day of 'Arafah, making mention of Allaah in abundance, sadaqah, sacrificing an animal on the Day of An-Nahr or the days that follow it, recitation of the Qur'aan, Repenting to Allaah, seeking His mercy and forgiveness, and so forth. For there is no time like these 10 days:

(( مَا مِنْ أَيَامٍ العَمَلُ الصَّالِحُ فَيهَا أَحَبُّ إَلَى اللهِ مِن أيامِ العَشرِ ))

" There are no days during which good righteous deeds

are more beloved to Allaah than the ten days."

Shaykhul-Islaam said regarding the saying of Allaah:

ﯪ ﯫ ﯬ ﯭ ﯮ ﯯ ﯰ

“So be patient, just like the Oolul-‘Azm (those of firm resolve) from the Messengers (were patient)…” [al-Ahqaaf (46):35]

“Every time the fitnah and the mihnah intensifies, then indeed the need for that is more severe, so the need for tolerance and Sabr is general for all of Banee Aadam. Neither the good of their Deen nor the good of their dunyaa can be established except with them.”

ahlul-bid'a speak with the saying of Ahlus-Sunnah generally, but with tafseel and tafseer, you see they only agree with ahlul-bid'a

al-Haafidh as-Sijzee [d.444H] said:

"And likewise many from his (al-Ash'aree's) madhhab, speak openly with the saying of Ahlus-Sunnah generally, then with tafseer and tafseel he goes back to the saying of the Mu'tazilah..." 1

So the benefit that can be taken from this saying of al-Haafidh as-Sijzee - rahimahullaah - is that you will find some of ahlul-bid'a speaking with the saying of Ahlus-Sunnah generally, but with tafseel and tafseer, you see they only agree with ahlul-bid'a and in reality oppose the position of Ahlus-Sunnah.
As an example, look at the jamaa'aat of today and you will find them speak of obedience to the ruler, which in general, agrees with the saying of Ahlus-Sunnah. But when you look to their actions or other statements in their books, articles and lectures, or at the sayings of their students, you will find them in total agreement with the Khawaarij, and in total opposition to Ahlus-Sunnah.

And our Shaykh Aboo 'Uthmaan Muhammad al-‘Anjaree (حفظه الله تعالى) said:

“I wish, here, to mention an important issue.

A man called me, so he said, ‘I want to read to you an article that was published yesterday where it speaks about obedience to the Walee al-Amr (the Muslim ruler).’ He is the one who wrote the article. So after the end (of the article), he asked, ‘What is your opinion of the article, Aboo ‘Uthmaan?’ And he is ikhwaanee, from the sons of Jam’iyyatul-Islaah al-Ijtimaa’iyyah, as though he was trying to say ‘we [ikhwaanul-Muslimeen] speak about obedience to the Walee al-Amr.’

So I said to him: The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) came with al-Mufassal (that which is detailed and specific). When the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) came, (he came) with al-Mufassal. And this is a faariq (that which distinguishes and differentiates) between the da’watul-Haqq (the da’wah of the Truth) and all of the other da’waat.

So beware, O ‘Abdullaah, of the mujmalaat (the generalities)!"

The particular group of people to whom the Zakaat ul Fitr is to be distributed to
- Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalee

The Scholars have differed concerning the issue of distributing the Zakaat ul Fitr, such that there are two sayings:
The first saying: That it is to be distributed amongst the eight types of individuals that have been mentioned by Allaah in Soorah At-Tawbah in His saying:
((Indeed the Sadaqaat (obligatory Zakaat) are for the poor and the destitute and those employed to collect (the funds); and for those whose hearts have inclined (towards Islaam), and to free the captives; and for those in debt, and in the Path of Allaah (the Mujahideen), and for the wayfarer: an obligation imposed by Allaah, and Allaah is All-Knower All-Wise.)) Soorah At-Tawbah: 60
This is a saying which is well-known from amongst the Shaafi’ee’s.
The second saying: Is that it is not to be distributed except amongst the poor and the destitute as occurs in the Hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas which preceded in which there was the statement: ((a sustenance for the destitute))*.
Ibn Al-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) said: ((It was from his guidance (Sallalaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) that he would specify those that were destitute for this particular Sadaqah, so he would not distribute it amongst the eight types of people – handful by handful. Nor did he command for that to be done that way, nor did any one of the companions do that, nor did those that came after them. Rather it is one of two sayings with us that it is impermissible to give it except to the destitute in particular.))
So this is the saying which is to be taken, except if you see dire need amongst someone from the other categories or an acceptable advantage by way of the Sharee’ah (to give it such), in which case it is to be given from this Sadaqah after it has been given to the poor and the destitute – in an ample portion. This is because it is a means of sustenance for them as has been established through that narration.
Here arises an issue which should be taken into consideration which is:
That it is permissible for one individual person to distribute his Zakaat to either one destitute person or to a number of them. Just as it is (allowed) for a group of people to give their fitrah to a single poor person so long as they are not committing an injustice in the right of the others who are present.
The second issue which is also recommended to pay attention to is that: It is impermissible to give it to those that it is impermissible to give the Zakaat to in accordance to that which we mentioned concerning the Zakaat of the types of wealth. And Allaah Knows best.

Ibn 'Umar reported: Allah's Messenger enjoined the payment of one Saa' * of dates or one Saa' of barley as Zakaatul-fitr on every Muslim slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the 'Eed prayer. [al-Bukhaaree]

Aboo Sa'eed Al-Khudree said: We used to take out as the Zakaatul-fitr one saa' of grain, or one saa' of barley, or one saa' of dates, or one saa' of cheese or one saa' of raisins. [al-Bukhaaree & Muslim]

* a mudd is a measurement consisting of the two hands cupped together. A Saa' is 4 amdaad (4 "mudds").
So a Saa' is 4 cupped hands full of those types of food mentioned in the ahaadeeth above:

The head of the household pays 1 saa' per member of his household [ 4 people --> 4 saa' --> 16 double-handfuls of grain, barley, dates, raisins, etc.]

When to give it:

Zakaatul-Fitr must be given before the 'Eed prayer.

Al-Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim said:

"And it was from his guidance and way (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) would give this sadaqah before the 'Eed prayer. And (it comes) in the Sunan from him, that he said: (( Whoever distributes it before the prayer, then it is an accepted zakaah, and whover distributes it after the prayer then it is a sadaqah from the (normal) sadaqaat.)) [Aboo Daawood (#1609), Ibn Maajah (#1827) and others. Declared hasan by Shaykh al-Albaanee]

And in the Saheehayn, from Ibn 'Umar, who said: (( The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) ordered with Zakaatul-Fitr that it be given before the people go out to the ('Eed) prayer.))

And what is necessitated by these two hadeeth, is that it is not permissible to delay it to after the 'Eed prayer, and that it passes with the completion of the prayer, and this is what is correct." [Zaadul-Ma'aad (2/20-21)]

To whom should it be given:

Al-Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim said:

"And it was from his guidance and way (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) to specify the masaakeen (the poor) by this sadaqah, and he did not divide it amongst the eight categories (mentioned in the Qur'aan for the obligatory Zakaah) handful by handful, nor did he order that, and no one from the Companions did that, nor those after them. Rather one of the the two sayings with us is: that it is not permissible to given it except the the masaakeen specifically. And this saying is more correct than the saying of the obligation of dividing it among the eight categories." [Zaad (2/21)]

One does not give this Zakaat in money, as this opposes the Sunnah and is bid'ah, as is mentioned by Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen and others. Our Shaykh Ahmad as-Subay'ee also explained that buying a big bag of rice to give is not the same as one measuring with his own hands. And Allaah knows best.

Studying the Qur'aan during the Nights of Ramadaan 1

From 'Abdullaah bin 'Abbaas (radiyallaahu 'anhumaa) who said: "The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) was the most generous of all the people - and he was even more generous in Ramadaan when Jibreel ('Alayhis-Salaam) would meet him, and he would meet him every night of Ramadaan until it ended. The Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) would recite the Qur'aan upon him. So when Jibreel would meet him, he was more generous than a fast wind (sent to bring the rain)." 2

al-Imaam an-Nawawee said in the explanation of (Saheeh) Muslim: "and in this hadeeth are benefits, from them is: the desirability of studying the Qur'aan." 3

al-Imaam Ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah) said: "It can be concluded from it studying (the Qur'aan), and that it is desirable for the believer that he study the Qur'aan with one who will benefit and aid him, because the Messenger ('Alayhis-Salaam) studied with Jibraa'eel for benefit, because Jibraa'eel, he is the one who came from Allaah (Jalla wa 'Alaa) and he is the ambassador between Allaah and the Messengers. So Jibraa'eel, he must benefit and increase the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) in matters regarding Allaah ('Azza wa Jal), in regards to establishing the letters (and words) of the Qur'aan, and regarding it's meanings which Allaah intended by them. So if a person studies with one who aids him upon understanding the Qur'aan, and aids him upon establishing its words, then this is sought after, just as the Prophet (Sallallaahu 'alayhi wasallam) studied with Jibraa'eel."

And he (al-Imaam Ibn Baaz) said: "and in it is another benefit, and it is that studying in the night is better than the day, because this studying was at night, and what is well-known is that the night is closer to gathering the heart and it's presence, and desiring more benefit than studying during the day. And also in it from benefits is: the legislation of studying and learning and that it is 'amalun saalih (a righteous, good deed), even if it is in other than Ramadaan, because in it is a benefit for each one of them, even if they are more than two, then there is no problem, each one of them benefiting from his brother and encouraging him upon recitation and inciting him. For it could be that he won't be eager and invigorated were he to sit by himself. But if he had a companion that he studied with, or companions, that would be more encouraging and energizing for him, along with the greatness of the benefit in what occurs between them by way of remembering and reminding, and the study of what might be problematic and difficult for them. All of that, in it is much good." 4

PROLONGING THE DUAA OF QUNOOT

Shaikh Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi`ee was asked:

What is the ruling on the duaa in the Taraaweeh Prayer, and what is the authenticity of the hadeeth for raising the hands in the Witr Prayer- along with a mention of the evidence?

The response:
As for duaa in the Taraaweeh Prayer, lengthening it as is done, then that is an innovation, an innovation, an innovation (bid'ah, bid'ah, bid'ah). The Prophet (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم) taught al-Hasan to say:

((اللّهمَّ اهْدِنيِ فِيمَنْ هَدَيْتَ، وَعافِنِي فِيمَنْ عافَيْتَ، وَتَوَلَّنيِ فِيمَنْ تَوَلَّيْتَ، وَبارِكْ لِي فِيما أَعْطَيْتَ، وَقِنيِ شَرَّ ما قَضَيْتَ، إنَّكَ تَقْضِي وَلا يُقْضٰى عَلَيْكَ، وَإِنَّهُ لا يَذِلُّ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ، وَلا يَعِزُّ مَنْ عَادَيْتَ، تَبارَكْتَ رَبَّناَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ))

Allaahummahdinee feeman hadayta, wa aafinee feeman aafayta, wa tawallanee feeman tawallayta, wa baarik lee feemaa atayta, wa qinee sharra maa qadayta, fa innaka taqdee wa laa yuqdaa alaika, wa innahu laa yadhillu man waalayta, wa laa ya`izzu man aadayta, tabaarakta Rabbanaa wa ta`aalayta.

(O Allaah! Continually guide me and make me amongst those whom You have guided; and make me one of those whom You save and make secure from all evils; and make me one of those whom You love, and whose affairs You take care of; and grant me blessings in all that You have given me; and save ne from the evil of what You have decreed; for You alone decree, and none can contradict Your Decree. None can humiliate those whom You have befriended, and those who are enemies to You will never have dignity and honour. Exalted are You, O Allaah, and Supreme.)

Likewise what occurs in the Haramayn (i.e.Makkah and al-Madeenah) with regard to prolonging that, then it is not legislated; and the best way is the way of Muhammad (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم).

As for raising the hands, then it is reported by way of Abdullaah ibn Naafi ibn Abil-Amyaa, and he is weak (daeef); and it occurs in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmad as a hadeeth of Anas, and its basis occurs in the two
Saheehs, but it does not mention raising the hands, so we are in doubt as to its establishment; so raising the hands in the du`aa of Qunoot is not legislated.
