I want to share a few websites that should be kept high on your bookmarks list.

The Figure and Gesture Drawing Tool.
This Website is equivalent to attending a drawing class. You can select a time period for your drawings, choose between male, female, clothed, nude, or action models. You even have a "Take a Class" section which is structured like an actual drawing studio environment with built in break times and various session lengths.

The Drawing Script.
This website is similar to the page above, but it's more useful for quick warm up drawings and studies. It gives you a more varied selection of categories, such as hands, heads,action scenes and even animals.

Artsy Poses.

This website has some stunning photographs of people in costumes and uniforms. The photographs are incredibly well lit and they can come in handy if you need reference material for fantasy or sci-fi illustrations.

How Colors Help Make Websites Successful.

This little article nicely summarizes the importance of color in websites. It is extremely important, regardless of your profession. Most young artists believe it is enough to have a super minimalist page with a few pieces, and that the work will speak for itself. Unfortunately, that is not enough. The design, the color, "in addition" to your work is what represents you as a professional artist. Show that you have put some effort, some thought behind your portfolio. Do not, I repeat, do not use Tumblr as your main portfolio site. It's an awful new trend that more and more illustrators are doing these days. Your website is your main tool for reaching clients! Design it! Code it! Personalize it! :)

Design Seeds.

This is one of my personal favorites. This website displays various color palettes that are representative of certain foods, seasons and even animals. Super useful!

and lastly,

Posemaniacs.

This website is great for both amateurs and professionals. It contains hundreds of 3-d models in various poses with visible muscle tissues. Great for studying anatomy!

Variety is Key

A fellow artist friend recently asked how to land advertising jobs with agencies~ the big projects?! Honestly, the more I think about it the more I realize that it has a lot to do with the amount of work in your portfolio. 8-12 pieces is not enough to have in your portfolio anymore. Not if you want to be a commercial artist. You need to show a vast variety of subject matter. You need to view your portfolio as a 'history' in a way. I'm not saying put low quality pieces in your portfolio, but show the client all of your skills, your experience.
When I was in school, I was always told I had too much work in my portfolio and that it was stylistically too 'all over the place.' Ironically, that's the same reason why I was able to develop a career in this field. Stylistically, I work differently from project to project and it never gets old. Most of my idols from my childhood always complain about being tired of drawing the same style over and over. I don't have that problem. So! Don't be afraid if you like to work in different styles and on a variety of subject matters. Variety is key, BUT you need to stay organized. Your website is your everything. It represents you and your work. It represents your past, it represents your present and it shows off your future potential. :)

I'm incredibly passionate about three things in life: Art, Video Games and Food. Since my lovely Ameenah is an amazing cook and I love taking pictures of everything she makes, I decided to start doing a bit of food journaling. Last night, she made a delicious vegan pizza, covered with mouth watering Daiya cheese (well not really cheese :), black olives, vidalia onions and spinach. And today, a tasty plate of pasta with garden fresh spinach and tofu. I'm a lucky man!!

In 2010, my dear friend and talented artist, Kerry Talbott, was diagnosed with brain cancer. It came as a big shock because he seemed like a healthy and always cheerful guy. Thankfully, the medical treatment was successful and he is back on his feet.

Unfortunately, he was also left without a job and health insurance after working at The Richmond Times Dispatch for over 20 years. You know what they say "When it rains, it pours!"
Fellow artists, friends and students came together to organize an Art Auction in order to help him and his family with the bills.
You can watch some of the news coverage below for more information:

The auction took place last night and it was incredible. More than 300 people came out to give Kerry their support, including the CBS 6 news crew. It was incredibly crowded, but I managed to squeeze in a few photographs from the show.
