Hello Good People. Whew!! I think we’ve finally caught our breath. October/November was very busy—but in a really good way. It feels like we’ve been doing 100mph down I-83 and life has been whipping by us. On top of that, the Ravens are on a nice winning streak right now! So of course…Happy Hump Day Train!

First, I have to send a warm welcome to EVERYONE who joined the MOVEMENT. From NY, to Delaware, to the internet and beyond, thank you for loving music enough to listen and join us on this musical journey.

I guess we’ve got some catching up to do. Thank you to everyone who came out to the EP release party. It was really incredible. Everybody was rocking out and enjoying the vibe. The Bluez Brothaz (DJ P-Funk and DJ Swyft) debuted their live show, Wendel Patrick rocked out for us with a new drummer in tow (Ethan), and Saleem & The Music Lovers took the energy through the roof. It was so good to look into the faces of the crowd as they heard the new material from Live Free or Die Trying.

Next stop was the legendary Mojo Main where we received an amazing reception. Delaware treated us really well. Jonathan took care of us on the boards and the sound was incredible. Seriously, I’m talking some of the best acoustics we’ve experienced anywhere! Thanks to Crossing Oceans and The Difference for the support. You got the energy going with your performances and you stuck around to rock out with us the rest of the night.

Saleem made a quick stop at Loyola the next night to perform with two immensely talented artists/friends, Wendel Patrick & Caleb Stine. It was wonderful hearing some oldies, but goodies from Outgrown These Walls, and Wendel and Saleem did their techno wonder thing onstage to the delight of all of the attendees. Sorry Wendel, but Saleem won again, lol!

Next it was on to Joe Squared at the Power Plant where Scott took care of us on the stage and in the crowd. I’m pretty sure he had his hand up the entire set. Thanks to everyone at Joe Squared. From the bartenders to the waiters, we were treated like family–and judging from the fist pumps, they really liked the music tooJ. The patrons were definitely vibing with us as well. We were able to tear them away from Tim Tebow and the Jets to get a couple of “Yes, Yes, Ya’lls !”

It’s been great to get out on the road. It’s been wonderful meeting new people and seeing new sites. It’s been incredible seeing the music start to spread out. We released the single “What The Fans Want,” and people are really starting to talk. You’ve been such a big part of that so I thought I’d share a few comments:

Hello Folks. This is the fourth installment of our love offering to you leading up to the release of Live Free or Die Trying tomorrow. Club Sonar, 407 E Saratoga St., is the place to be this Friday, November 4th. You know Saleem & Friends will be putting it down, but there’s more! NY’s DJ Swyft and DJ P-Funk, collectively known as The Blues Brothaz, will be spinning on four turntables live!! That’s right, no pre-recorded mixes or fabricated routines. They will be scratching, cutting, mixing, and transforming on four turntables and it’s all improv (am I starting to sound like a used car salesman again, lol)!! If that doesn’t get your juices flowing, here is a little more excitement to throw your way. Happy Tuesday Good People!!! We are offering a little love to you each day leading up to the EP Release Party for Live Free Or Die Trying on Friday, 11/4 at Sonar. Today We’re sharing the first official review for the upoming EP, by Barrett King:

“On the most recent outing by Baltimore emcee Saleem and his band, things done changed. Saleem has, since his debut LP, done the following which cannot be denied: cut his h……air, collaborated with Caleb Stine, and changed the spelling of his name. On Live Free or Die Trying, he and his band have done the following (which is a matter of opinion): taken the sound a bit down-tempo, almost jazzy; and settled into their own by showing comfort and confidence.

Live Free dials in at about 29:00, opening with a morsel called “What the Fans Want” to whet the fans’ appetite, delivering the six-track meal steak first. Saleem himself spits like he has something to prove; which he does. Maryland on the whole continues to spend too little time attending to its finer emcees, instead looking to DC and unfortunate representatives of DMV like Wale.

Casual fans of hip hop tend to spend too much time focusing on the beats. For those fans, Live Free or Die Trying will not instantly strike a note. The second cut, Overqualified, has that down-tempo feel that lets more hardcore hip hop fans to look to the verses of Saleem and Topix. A song with that title is going to have a touch of humble bragging (see Twitter meme @humblebrag). The message on Overqualified isn’t about bragging, however; the point strikes as more of an analysis of what is killing the major-label music industry: stifling talent with heavily label-biased contracts and looking less for the next big thing than the next big thing-for-the-moment.
The fifth cut, “5-2-2011″, speaks straight to the death of Osama bin Laden. New listeners will get a full taste of what Saleem’s philosophy of rap is by focusing on the lyrics. Those who look for political and moral analysis in their rap will feel their brain tickled along with their ears. The first verse bursts forth with a fired cadence that Saleem would be well-advised to maintain. Along with the closing song, “SHHH!”, his passion is felt most on this over all the cuts on the EP. The band as a whole is inspired by social commentary and a desire to impart values through the vehicle of hip hop, encouraging the hip hop culture to open its eyes past the surface of what we see in music videos and to think about what goes on in the world and how it impacts us here at home, not to mention each of us individually.

If hip hop, like most of the music business, has been turned on its ear these years post-Napster, Saleem & The Music Lovers are on a quest to pick it back up, dust it off, and give it a path to longevity. You can’t fight for the title if you don’t box your way to the top of the ranks. Opening for talent like KRS-One, Talib Kweli, Wu-Tang Clan and so many others is indicative of the fact that this group can hold its own with the heavyweights. Hello Hump Day Family!!! I know, I know, it’s not hump day, but I thought I‘d start your week off on a high note. So, even though the work week is starting, we have some goodness in store for you today.

First, I have to give a warm WELCOME to everyone how joined the MOVEMENT. We are going to take great care of you:-)

Thanks to everyone who came out to party with us on last Saturday. NYC was wonderful!! For well over an hour, The Parkside Lounge was filled with the melodies and sounds of Baltimore’s own, and the atmosphere did not disappoint. Everyone at the club was welcoming and inviting, and the crowd participation almost reached nuclear levels. Cordell, we’re holding you to your promise of rocking out on stage with us and your tambourine, lol! We had an amazing time! Thank you Sean for making sure our music sounded great. Yes, clearly you missed a lot, but fortune is smiling upon you. Why you ask? THE EP RELEASE IS COMING!!!! Yes, it’s almost here. Live Free or Die Trying is the culmination of several months of obsessive compulsive creativity in the basement:-) Seriously though, the album is incredible. As if that wasn’t enough, The Bronx Blend King, DJ K-Swyft has given me permission to start sharing some of his exclusive mixes with you. DJ K-Swyft (a.k.a. The Bronx Blend King) was born in Brooklyn, New York on August 7, 1975 as Kemuel Johnson and received his first set of turntables at age 8. Born into a family of music lovers and musicians, it was inevitable for K-Swyft to dive into the art that he once considered a hobby. K-Swyft is a child of the 1980’s and had the privilege to witness the birth of hip-hop while growing up in the Bronx. He brings that unique perspective to all of his mixes and the results are nothing short of amazing. He has the top rated show on WTNR radio because he always drops classic material. Hello Folks,

For NY, Baltimore is the gift and the curse. A curse on the football field, but a gift on stage. SALEEM & THE MUSIC LOVERS ARE INVADING NY!!! That’s right good people. We’ll be bringing old bay seasoning, crab cakes, and GOOD music. If you have family or friends in the NY area tonight, let them know that Saturday night will be a show for the ages. The Parkside Lounge just extended the band’s set. You see, even NY knows how Saleem & ‘Nem put it down (yes, I said ‘nem).

Just to give you a taste of what you’re in for, I’ve attached a video of Saleem & The Music Lovers bringing down the house at Creative Alliance. I thought Saleem was going to break his leg. Check the video out and you’ll see why. All I’ll say is that he’s doing fine:-)

Ok, so we’ve made it through an earthquake, a hurricane, and a downpour of Noah’s Ark proportions…I think you deserve a heaping portion of SALEEM & THE MUSIC LOVERS!! Happy early Hump Day Mania!!!!

Before I begin, thank you to EVERYONE who joined the MOVEMENT. You are now part of an incredible extended family and we promise to take great care of you.

Hello Hump Day Family!! I hope you have been able to keep cool in this ridiculously hot weather. Today’s rain was a breath of fresh air, but can a sister get a nice summer day? I’m talking 78 degrees with nice breeze…hmmm, that rhymed. Maybe I’ll take off my manager’s cap and put a kangol on, lol. HAPPY HUMP DAY YA’LL!!!!

I want to send a warm WELCOME to all of the people who joined the MOVEMENT last month. You are now part of a huge music loving family and we promise to take great care of you:-)

Last month, we asked you all for feedback regarding prospective EP covers. We wanted to know what cover stood out to you the most. Well…WE HAVE A WINNER!!! First let me say thanks for giving us your feedback. Whether you sent us emails, waged heated debates on Saleem’s page (lol), or sent us text messages, we appreciate the love. We also appreciate the detail–Brush–you put into your descriptions and what you think worked. I want you to know we took your feedback into account and with the help of Kevin Gift–who took the photos and did the all of the cover designs–we came up with the official EP cover. BTW, I use the term “we” rather loosely. All “we” did was email the cover to Kevin Gift with your suggestions and he sent us back a masterpiece (my words, not his, lol). Here is what you saw originally:
