We will have tons of games, food and fun as we countdown to the next decade. Both middle and high school students are invited out the church office for our last party of the year. This has become quite a tradition at Thrive and every year the party gets even bigger.

HS Bible Study in James: Part 2

This past Sunday we looked at verses 19-26 in chapter 1. This is a key passage in the book of James as he is setting up a strong theme that lasts through the entire letter. We were reminded together of our call to live out what we believe. It is that living out that is really the most important part of our time in the Word.

We left Sunday night focusing on two key questions:

What can you do this week to be a doer of this truth, acting on it and beginning to make it a habit?
How can you make sure you remember to do this?

Here are a couple of additional questions for you to explore to dig a little deeper into the passage:

What part does humility play in our receiving and applying God's Word? Why is it so essential? What inner and outer influences can make it hard sometimes for us to humbly accept God's words (1:21)?
What keeps you from being quick to listen? How can you grow better at listening? How can you practice listening this week?
Study humility or meekness in cross-references, using a concordance. For example, what do you learn from Matthew 5:5; Galatians 5:23; Ephesians 4:2; 2 Timothy 2:25; Titus 3:2; 1 Peter 2:18;3:4,15?
What might cause a person to forget to do what the Word says? Why is it easy to listen to God's Word without doing what it says?
What does it mean to "keep oneself unstained from the world" (1:27)?

This summer we are working our way through the book of James together. A couple of weeks ago we came up with our own section headings. It will be interesting to see if we change these up at all as we study the different passages a little more.

1:1 Greeting

1:2-18 Obedience through trials helps us grow

1:19-27 Action through the Word

2:1-13 Don’t show favoritism

2:14-26 Does faith work?

3:1-12 Watch yo mouf

3:13-18 Reigning wisdom

4:1-10 Worldly addiction vs Godly submission

4:11-12 Only God can judge

4:13-17 Living with eternal perspective

5:1-6 Storing up earthly treasures

5:7-12 Patiently waiting on the Lord

5:13-20 The power through prayer

Fast Food Friday- July 10

High School Paintball- This Saturday

Pursuing God

The past two weeks we have been challenged by the teaching of Louie Giglio to pursue God in our lives. He suggested to intentionally implements these six steps over the next six days to pursue experiencing intimacy with God.

Set aside time every day to seek God.
Start with His Word to see him. (Suggested Psalms: 19, 33, 40, 86, 96, 145)
Settle on a thought, a verse, or an idea of God.
Soak in that phrase or verse by meditating.
Sense God's presence in your life.
Share and spread what you know of Him.

I hope that you all had a great Christmas. It feels like it has been a little while since we've been together.

Tomorrow night I hope you are ready to party. We have our big New Year's party. This year we are at the church office, 7:00pm-1:00am. We'll have a ton of food and games and of course our new HDTV.

Bonfire Next Friday

Attention! Next Friday, October 31st is our Bonfire from 6-10pm. In case you are under the mistaken understanding that you are still young enough to Trick or Treat, I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you are wrong. It is getting to that point where it is near socially unacceptable for you to walk (some of you drive) house to house and ask for free candy. Though I will admit, it doesn't get much sweeter of a deal than that.

To that end, we are throwing a real party for you. Join us for s'mores and hot dogs. The weather is perfect to huddle up around a blazing bonfire. We'll be playing some great fall games as well. We are going to be at the Zenger's house (you can find directions here). Be sure to sign up on Sunday morning or at Thrive.
