New School Year Theme

The new school year theme is “Our Plans, His Promises”. This theme is based on Proverbs 16:9, “In our hearts we plan our course, but the LORD determines our steps. We will be focusing on how we like to be in control of our lives and have “plans” that we feel are best for us. However God is the only one who knows the future, and through his loving kindness, he has created a plan that is the best for each and every one of us. We just need to look for his guidance in his Word rather than trying to take control of the plan ourselves.

New Staff Update

We are excited to have Allison and Luke Dorn teach at Salem this year! Allison will teach Kindergarten, and Luke will be teaching English, Literature and Spelling in the Middle School as well as Music Director. Here is some information they have shared to help everyone get to know them:

Luke Dorn is a 2018 graduate of Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in coaching. He taught at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Beverly Hills, Florida for four years before returning to the Midwest. Luke grew up in Lewiston, MN, where he attended St. John’s Lutheran School (K-8). After grade school, he attended Luther High School in Onalaska, WI and graduated in 2014. He enjoys watching the Twins, listening to music and playing piano, singing in church with his wife, Allison, and hiking and camping in the great outdoors.

Allison graduated from Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minnesota, with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education in 2017. She was first called to teach at Little Lambs Learning Center in Duluth, Minnesota, serving there for two years. In 2019, she married Luke and was called to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, in Beverly Hills, Florida to be Precious Lambs' Director and lead teacher. She is excited to be in the kindergarten room at Salem. Allison grew up in the Midwest. Her family moved from West Bend WI, to Stillwater MN, and to Crete Illinois, before she went to college. She enjoys baking, crafting, being outside, and singing with her husband.

Meet the Teacher Nights (School Orientation Nights)

Salem has two days for school orientation for the 2022-2023 school year. This is the time when you can meet with the teacher to talk about the rules and expectations of the classroom. Your student can also bring in their school supplies to put them in their desk to get it all situated.

Please put one of the two following dates on your calendar (an online sign up will be sent soon):

August 22 from 8am - 12pm or August 23 from 3pm - 7pm

School Updates

With summer in full swing, the school is getting its usual cleaning over the summer months. New carpet is planned for the school and principal offices as well as other areas in the church. We are working on installing a PA system to use for announcements and emergency procedures. The school lunch room will have a new epoxy floor installed and walls will be painted. The whole room will look fresh and new! The upstairs hallway will be painted as well as Mrs. Grobe’s room.

Registration for Preschool Next School Year

Preschool classes are almost full. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. You have the choice of which days you would like your child to come. There’s a minimum attendance of 3 half days up to 5 full days. The cost is $30 for half day, $40 for a full day. Tours will be scheduled individually for those interested. If you have any questions you can call 651-439-7831 and talk to Jane Grobe. If you know of any 2-4 year olds looking for a preschool, please refer them to our website salemlutheran.org for registration information and for requesting a tour.

Registration for K-8 Next School Year

Referral Program

The School Board approved a program that gives an incentive to recruiting new families for our school. If a family who has children enrolled refers a new family to Salem, they will receive a $200 tuition credit at Christmas per family they have referred. A church family who refers a new family will receive a $200 script gift card also at Christmas per family if they so choose. There is no limit to the number of families you can refer. If you have any more questions about the program, speak to a School Board member or Mr. Klatt.

All you have to do is login and sign up! If you have students at Salem, the rebates earned can be applied to your child’s tuition. There will be a flat 5% fee on all orders. Prayer

One way we usually forget about how we can help our school and church is to pray for them throughout the year. Your prayers are always a blessing and it is great to know that you are asking God for his blessings in our school and church year.

Registration Packet for the New School Year

We are currently working on all the information our families will need to start the new school year. This will include things like busing info, lunch fees, band registration, piano registration, volunteer opportunities and more! Preschool students will be notified as to the classroom they have been assigned to as well. Please watch for this information that we hope to be able to share by the end of June or early in July. New families to Salem may have questions before then. Please feel free to reach out to school.office@salemlutheran.org or rklatt@salemlutheran.org for any questions you may have!

Staff Update

Heidi Kostrzewa will also be leaving the Salem family as she is marrying a seminary student who will be vicaring next year. We have called to fill her position. Michelle Stob has accepted the call to teach 2nd grade at Salem next year. We pray for her as she makes this transition and rejoice that she will continue to be a part of the Salem Staff.

New Website Design Coming!

We are currently working on a new website design to help our families stay informed of the latest school news. We are hoping it will make it easier to find information when needed. We will keep you posted on when this new format will be rolled out for every one to start using!

We are happy to post the final lunch menu of the school year!

Please note May 27 is the last day of school and no lunch will be served since there is noon dismissal. Families are welcome to pack their own lunch and meet at Washington Park in Stillwater for a final day of school fellowship.

Preschool will be on a field trip on May 18. There will be an option to pre order a sub sandwich that day for preschool only.

Thermometer Update

We will no longer require students and guests to take their temperature when they enter school. The face thermometer will be available in the office if anyone would like to check in the morning or if teachers need to check this throughout the day.

We are asking parents to check their child's temperature at home before sending them to school if they seem at all under the weather or not feeling their best. If you are at all concerned about how they are feeling, it is best to keep them home until you are sure they are not sick. This helps everyone in the classroom avoid illness and be able to learn at their best. Thank you for helping us keep our classrooms healthy!

MNSAA Visit

Salem’s MNSAA visit went very well. The team came and was very thankful for all of the people who welcomed them and answered their questions. Salem’s report will be shared with the MNSAA board at their next meeting and the Board will vote on accreditation status. I have been assured by many people in the process that Salem will be accredited again for the next seven years. More information will come out at the end of the year about Salem’s Strategic Plan for the next seven years. Thank you to everyone for making this visit so great.

Upcoming School Plays

The Preschool Play will be held on May 5th at 6pm in the gym. Their play is titled “Stone Soup: A Rock Opera”. Grades 2-4 are performing “The Granny Awards” on May 12 at 6pm in the gym. They have already been trying on different costumes and getting set for their performance. Lastly, the 5th-8th grade play will be held at the Zephyr Theater in downtown Stillwater on May 24th. There will be two shows that evening. We still have yet to set the times, but as soon as we do set the times, we will share that information and get out a way for families to sign up for the show. All are welcome to attend any of the plays listed above and we hope you enjoy your theatrical experience.

Library Book Returns

Please have all library materials returned to the school library by May 20.

Olympic Day Coming Soon

Salem’s annual Olympic Day is coming up on May 25th. This is a day where we ask for parent volunteers to come and help run certain track and field events. These events include mainly measuring how far students kick or throw a ball, timing their running, counting how many times they jump rope and many other easy tasks. Please save this date if you would like to help as it is a great time for parents and students.

Salem’s Last Day of School

Salem’s last day of school is May 27th. Please note dismissal is noon that day. All families are invited to come to Washington Park immediately after dismissal. You can bring your picnic lunch and enjoy time together before we all part ways for the summer.

Staff Update

Salem is going to have some changes amongst its staff next year. Mrs. Klatt will be staying home with baby Ivy and not teaching Kindergarten next year. Mrs. Stob will not be teaching in the middle school next year either. Allison and Luke Dorn have accepted calls to teach at Salem. Allison will teach Kindergarten, and Luke will be teaching English, Literature and Spelling in the Middle School as well as Music Director. We pray for them as they finish their year in Florida and are excited for them to join us in Minnesota. Heidi Kostrzewa will also be leaving the Salem family as she is marrying a seminary student who will be vicaring next year. We have called to fill her position. Michelle Stob has accepted the call to teach 2nd grade at Salem next year. We pray for her as she makes this transition and rejoice that she will continue to be a part of the Salem Staff.

We are also so very thankful that Pastor Ryan Wolfe has accepted the call to serve as pastor at Salem Lutheran and will arrive sometime this summer. Pastor Jake Schram declined his call to Helena, MT and will continue to serve here at Salem. To God be the glory!

St. Croix Joint Ministry with Salem

Due to the Council looking into the financial situation of the church and school, this joint ministry has been put on hold for a year. We will have more updates like the one at the previous voters meeting as we start up next school year. The one page update is attached below if you would like to view it. Sports Update

Bowling practice began at the end of March. The students continue to practice at Stillwater Bowl. They have yet to have their first match, but we are excited to here about all of the strikes and spares from the match. Track has had a few practices and will continue to practice until their track meet on May 6th. We are excited for them to show their running, jumping, and throwing skills.

Educational grants were allocated to families at the end of March. Families were sent out their tuition agreements for the upcoming school year as well. We continue to thank everyone for their patience as we work through this process and please reach out to Mr. Klatt if you have any questions.

Thermometer Update

Culture Night

We thank everyone who made the evening a huge success. We all enjoyed learning about the cultures that were displayed throughout the school. A huge thank you to the parents who provided food and refreshments for the staff that evening. It was such a blessing to have some fuel for our bodies on a long day at school. We all truly appreciate our great parents!

Adult Night Out

Salem Parent Organization planned a great night of fundraising and fun to raise funds for a new PA system for the school. We thank all involved for their donations for baskets, volunteer time, and attendance at the event which helped us raise funds. We are also very grateful for many donations from local businesses as well! We will give a total that was raised soon.

MNSAA Visit

Salem is up for re-accreditation this school year. We will have a team to assess all of the data the school has collected to prove that Salem is being run well and efficiently. They may be coming out to talk to you as you drop off your children on those days, so please answer their questions to the best of your ability. We will share how Salem does after the team gives us their report.

Map Testing April 25-29

The final round of MAP testing will begin April 25th. These tests are designed to show the students growth throughout the year, which is why they are taken multiple times. It also gives a good data point for teachers to see if the test is showing what we are seeing in the classroom.

Sports Update

Bowling practice began at the end of March. There are enough students for three bowling teams this year which is awesome. Track will begin in April and we are excited to have practice outside and get prepared to have a great track meet.

Reminders for the Week

Here are a number of reminders for you for the week:

Kamera Kids meet this coming Friday, March 18 from 7:45 am - 8:30 am. Kids should bring your 2-3 winter themed vertical pictures only.

Preorders for yearbooks will be accepted until March 18th. They are $15 each and cash or check is accepted in the school office. If you would like your TADS account billed, just send an email to school.office@salemlutheran.org with your order. Checks will not be cashed until sometime in April/May after our order is placed. Yearbooks should arrive in May.

There are many baskets that could use more items for the Adult Night Out planned for March 25! Please review the classroom basket list if you have any questions.Many great prizes and lots of fun is planned for this adult only event that runs from 6-9pm. Tickets will be sold at the door for $10 each. Come for an hour or come for the night. It is sure to be a fun event with tacos being served, raffles, wine pull, bingo, bean bags and more. Please come!

Kindergarten and 1st grade will be putting on their spring play, Pajama Party, in the school gym on Thursday, March 24th at 6 pm. This date is earlier than usual since Mrs. Klatt may be on maternity leave soon. All are welcome to attend!

Yearbooks, Tuition Awards and Spring Break

Don't forget preorders for yearbooks will be accepted until March 18th. They are $15 each and cash or check is accepted in the school office. If you would like your TADS account billed, just send an email to school.office@salemlutheran.org with your order. Checks will not be cashed until sometime in May after our order is placed. Yearbooks should arrive in May.

If you have submitted a TADS financial aid request, tuition awards will be sent out at the latest by April 15 (if possible, we will try to send them by the end of March). Preschool tuition agreements will be sent out when we return from break.

Registration for Preschool Next School Year - Registration fees go up on March 1st. Register now to receive discount!

The time is already here to register your child for preschool. A re-enrollment email came out the week of January 3rd for those currently enrolled. If you are currently enrolled at Salem School or a member at Salem you can register and reserve your spot for the 2022-2023 school year. We will have 3 classes available; 3 year olds, mixed age, and 4 and 5 year olds not yet ready for kindergarten. We reserve the right to place your child in the classroom that best meets your child’s educational needs and our staffing.

Registration fees are $100 for the early bird until March 1st, then the fee is $175. Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis. Returning school families’ enrollment opened for the 2022-2023 school year on January 3rd. This enrollment is open to any current students and their siblings. Salem member families may also enroll at this time. Salem members new to our school may enroll directly on our school website. K-8 registration fee is $175 before March 1st and $275 after. New families may begin enrolling on February 1st. This year we ask all families to fill out a TADS Financial Aid application. The church has given us $250,000 in grant money to award to our families. You must apply by March 1 to be eligible to receive an award.

COVID Update

After our short quarantine period, COVID and other illnesses have calmed down at Salem. We continue to ask parents to keep their children home if they have any symptoms of illnesses.

Sports Update

The boy’s B-team played well this season. They were a very young team and grew tremendously in the areas of basketball skills and teamwork. A huge thank you to Neal Anderson and Griffin Paulsen for coaching the boy’s team this year.

The girl’s B-team ended up winning the b-team tournament at West at the end of January. The girls played really well together and supported each other throughout the entire season. A big thank you to Jacob Buller and Ryan Klatt for coaching the girl’s team this year.

Culture Night - March 3

Salem annually hosts an education night with a changing theme every year. This year the theme is culture. Each classroom will have a country that you can come in and learn about. The students will help prepare their classroom for the event while learning about the country in the process. Families will then be invited to come in and see all of the different cultures that the students have learned about. The event will take place from 5:30pm-7:30pm that evening.

No School March 7-11

There will be no school this week for Spring Break.

Adult Night Out - March 25

Salem Parent Organization is planning a night of fellowship and fun to raise funds for a new PA system for the school. All adults are invited to a free taco bar and snacks. Events will include raffles, wine pull, games and more! Come for an hour or for the duration of the event which is 6-9pm. Watch for more information coming soon!

Pep Fest, No School 18th & 21st, and TADS Application

Tomorrow is our last day of Spirit/Winter Fest week. Kids can show their Salem spirit by dressing in Salem wear or green and/or blue for the day. The day will end with a pep rally that will start at 2:30 pm for the whole school. Parents are welcome to attend if you like.

Please remember there is no school on Friday, Feb. 18th for a teacher in-service day and also no school on Monday, Feb. 21 for President's Day.

We are very close to the end date of March 1 for submitting your TADS Financial Aid application! All K-8 families must have this submitted by this deadline to be eligible for tuition awards for the next school year. If you haven't already done so, please fill this out as soon as possible!

St Croix Lutheran Academy Summer Camps

Students look forward to summer for a variety of reasons, and at the top of the list are fun activities and time spent with friends. St. Croix Lutheran Academy is offering a wide range of summer camps for boys and girls entering grades 4/5 to 9. Sports camps include basketball, bowling, wrestling (gr. 1-9), volleyball, football (gr. K-8), and soccer. Academic camps include Art, Speak & Play Theatre, Introduction to American Sign Language, and new camps Science for Girls and Geeking Out With Games. Registration for Preschool Next School Year

Registration for K-8 Next School Year

Returning school families’ enrollment opened for the 2022-2023 school year on January 3rd. This enrollment is open to any current students and their siblings. Salem member families may also enroll at this time. Look for a re-enrollment email from TADS that came the first week back from break to make your re-enrollment process easier. Salem members new to our school may enroll directly on our school website. K-8 registration fee is $175 before March 1st and $275 after. New families may begin enrolling on February 1st. This year we ask all families to fill out a TADS Financial Aid application. The church has given us $250,000 in grant money to award to our families. You must apply by March 1 to be eligible to receive an award.

COVID Update

COVID and just sickness in general took a turn for the worse at the end of January. We had three teachers test positive for COVID and had 10+ students out with COVID/COVID exposures and others out for sickness. We ended up doing three days of distance learning, so teachers and students could recover and come back to school healthy and ready to go.

Power-Up Winter Challenge

In January, the students are challenged to be active during the Winter months. This can be a time where it is easy just to hang around inside and not be very active. Power-Up has us track which students are active throughout two weeks and gives Salem money based on the percentage of kids that participate. This is a great way to remind our students to be active and raise money for other fitness equipment Salem may need replaced. This will run into February.

At the start of February, we will also be doing the Try for Five challenge from Power-Up. This is a program that encourages students to try five vegetables a day. The school receives money for having the students participate and it helps the students to try new foods and have healthier diets.

Spirit/Winterfest Week

From Feb. 14th-Feb 17th, Salem will be having our annual Spirit Week/Winterfest. This is the week when students have dress-up days and different winter activities that happen at various times. This all culminates in a Pep Rally where we celebrate different sports teams, clubs, and just Salem school spirit. We are excited to have this again and for the students to show their Salem pride!

No School February 18th and 21st

There will be no school on Friday, Feb. 18 for a faculty inservice. There is No school also on Monday, Feb. 21 for Presidents Day.

Culture Night - March 3

Salem annually hosts an education night with a changing theme every year. This year the theme is culture. Each classroom will have a country that you can come in and learn about. The students will help prepare their classroom for the event while learning about the country in the process. Families will then be invited on March 3rd to come in and see all of the different cultures that the students have learned about.

Sports Update The Boy’s B-team is now 1-2 as of writing this update. They have been improving with lots of practice and gaining experience as they have a younger team this year.

The Girl’s B-team is 1-0 this year. Both teams have had lots of practice with minimal games due to COVID and weather. We are planning on rescheduling games as we can, but both teams are looking forward to the tournament on Jan 29-30. If you would like a schedule of the games, you can look online on the Salem Sports calendar or you can email Tom Stob (tstob@salemlutheran.org) for the game schedule.

Jump Up Day and Menu Change

On Friday, 8th grade students will be going to St. Croix Lutheran Academy to experience life as a high school student. The rest of our Salem students will get to experience what life will be like next year. They will “jump up” to the next grade level from 10:00 am - 11:00 am and spend an hour with the teacher in the next grade. The teachers are excited to have these students in their classroom to get to know them. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

On another note, there is a minor change to the lunch menu on Friday. Instead of cheese ravioli as the second lunch option, it will be cheesy noodles. The first option will still be lasagna.

We will soon start accepting applications for enrollment from new families on February 1. We have been giving tours throughout the month of January and continue to receive inquiries and applications. Please enroll your children as soon as possible if you would like to secure their spot at Salem for the next school year.

A reminder that we are encouraging all families to fill out the tuition assistance portion of TADS as you re-enroll. The church has $250,000 that will be given out to families, and we are using TADS as our tool to help us accomplish that.
