Most were expecting something to do with fixed overheads such as utilities while some guessed &#8220;unnecessary spending&#8221; like entertainment and fancy upgrades that they didn&#8217;t need. They are all almost right! It has got to do with fixed overhead and &#8220;unnecessary spending&#8221;. In any business, whether you are a 1 man business or a multi-national corporation the rules of business applies the same; &#8220;If you are not generating sales, you are loosing money!&#8221;.</p>

One of the top ways money are wasted each year is through bad marketing! Marketing can be your best friend or your sales people&#8217;s worst enemy. Finding out what type of marketing campaign to run and the right marketing mix that work for your business is mandatory in any business; Otherwise you will either send the wrong message to the right people or the right message will reach the wrong people. Marketing requires specifics, this is one area of business where you cannot afford to be cheap at ( d0n&#8217;t try to kill 5 birds with 1 stone here).  Find out what is the purpose of your marketing and the intended results before running it.<br />

Often times when I ask business owners why do they do marketing, most answered &#8220;To generate more sales&#8221;. It&#8217;s true that the ultimate goal is to generate more sales but you have got to be more specific than that especially if you are not a big name such as Coca-Cola or Apple. If what you need is for people to visit your store to check out your great products, simply do that plus make it fascinating (e.g. your offer, their reward, etc..) while keeping it simple. If you need to collect contact details so that your sales people can call them and sell them, you need to do just that again! The wonderful part of marketing if it&#8217;s done right you will be able to measure it&#8217;s success and pin-point troubles so that you can focus on what works and make it work harder.<br />

</span>The invisible way you are loosing money is through your sales people. I even may add you entire payroll, I will get to that later. Almost all of businesses rely on sales people and their managers when it comes to sales, some almost entirely. The sad truth about sales people is that they account for a large amount of your overhead and costs, the larger the sales team you have the bigger the hole in your pocket shall they not produce more than average results. How do you make sure that hiring sales people does not rob you of your revenue and profits? The common mistake I encounter is businesses and managers hiring sales people,  give them a basic product training and be at the mercy of their selling skills. Sales system and sales process implemented might solve this problem but it still leaves a loophole where your sales people does not execute processes effectively or worst does not execute them at all. Most of the time sales people are yearning to close more sales, I mean tell me, won&#8217;t any of your staff love to take extra pay at the end of the month? Those who don&#8217;t either has limited resources, skills and knowledge which translate to drive (for the reward). I bet that even a coffee lady who is given just enough resources, skills and knowledge would want a shot at the reward.<br />

Now this brings me to what I said earlier about your entire payroll; Wouldn&#8217;t you be loosing money if every member of your staff could be generating revenue and yet they are not doing so? Here is what I mean, let&#8217;s say you have a sales team of 5 people and they are generating RM100,000 a month, and lets say you have 5 other staff on the administration including the coffee lady and after you have trained them to sell they could generate only 10% of what your sales team achieved. What would this mean to your revenue? An instant increase of RM10,000 of sales by just taking a simple step. Now if you didn&#8217;t take this step you would be loosing RM10,000 a month instead. If your sales team is currently generating only 20-30% in revenue (which most businesses are facing today), give them the resources, skills and knowledge they need so that they can start to generate the revenue to skyrocket your business. In today&#8217;s market place, customer service are the front lines of a business, it either will make or break your business. The good news is that there are a huge amount of money to be made through customer service and if you are not taking this advantage, you&#8217;d be loosing more customers and ultimately more money. Customer service no longer play the role of the pacifier. They play an important role in the sales process; and sometimes are the fuel that feed the sales pipeline. How often do you use customer service to build relationships that lead to more sales?Big businesses all over the world are investing more on customer service and CRM lately because more and more businesses are coming to realize how much money they have been leaving on the table by taking customer service for granted. A common similarity that I find in businesses that succeeded in generating more revenue through customer service are: efficient, reliable, genuine, solves problem, adds more value and they are happy doing it! On the other hand, the common similarity that I find in businesses that failed or on their way down are: just looking after their own interests;not their customers, playing dirty tricks, create hassle to customers, breaking promises, does not respect privacy and not happy doing it. Customer Service could be the gold mine that you are searching for; just as long as you do it right!</li>
