The club is used as a polling station during elections and today the city voted

for its first elected Mayor .To celebrate the occasion we invited the BBC Philharmonic

to perform  in the concert hall as part of their community tour. The nine musicians

performed music by Handel, Corelli, Mozart and Rossini.

Sergeant May Preston from the Salford Central Neighbourhood Policing Team will be taking part in the Belfast Marathon on 7 May 2012 to raise money for the  club.

Sergeant Preston said:  “It’s a really iconic building and it’s great that they have stayed close to their roots and chosen to do so much good within the area to make Salford a better place to grow up. To show my support, I will be running my first marathon on my 30th birthday and hopefully will be able to raise a decent amount of money for them.”

On Saturday 3rd March, iconic Smiths photographer Stephen Wright will be here for a special photo shoot for Smiths and Morrissey fans. The new pictures will be going towards an exhibition at the Holden Gallery in Manchester, alongside Stephens original smiths pictures from 1985

So if you have the confidence and the style, Morrissey-esque quiffs, tattoos - please come along between 2pm and 5pm.

Three girls qualified for the regional finals in Preston. Zoe Higham (3rd from L) West End Boys Club won the under 14 final with Cody Meadows (C) Screamin Wheels Club runner up. Our new open age football team which started in September 2011 are currently top of their League.
The team are managed jointly by volunteer Mike Murray (L) and club leader Leon Warmington (C)
Volunteer Ben Sellick (R) is the secretary. The team have also reached the quarter finals of the Sunday
League Cup , so it’s a great start to 2012. The table below shows the top six places.

SLC members William Doyle, Casey James and Kyle Hili took  the top three places in the Greater Manchester Federation of  Clubs for Young People  under 14 snooker competition.
The final was held at Stockport Lads’ Club last night. William Doyle (L) once again came out as winner adding a second trophy to his pool win in December.  Casey James (C) was runner up and Kyle Hili (R) won the 3rd place play off.  All three will go through to the Northern Finals at Preston.

Last Wednesday we had the annual Christmas party at the club. Special events included an assault course in the concert hall set up by volunteers Niall and Ryan, a quiz about the 100 SLC camps, pool competitions and lots of prizes.

neighbours party

On Christmas day a group of local neighbours from the New Barracks Co-operative organised a Christmas party for people to be together. It was a great idea and resurrected the idea of traditional parties that were held on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Today we had a fantastic event in the club, BBC Sport’s Football Focus programme was broadcast in front of a live audience from the gym. The programme was presented by Dan Walker, with the panel
of Lee Dixon, Mark Lawrenson, Robbie Savage and special guest Michael Vaughan.
The audience were football fans who had travelled from many parts of the country to be here. We gave everybody a tour of the club including the boxing gyms, billiards room, concert hall and Smiths room. We’d like to thank everyone who came along and to the whole team from BBC Sport for making it such an enjoyable event.

Alex beat Connor Scudder of Droylsden Youth Centre in the final. Alex wins GM under 16 pool
We now have the under 12, under 14, and under 16 winners at the club, and all of them will go forward to the northern finals in Preston in 2012.
