Niall has received support from the Greater Manchester Lieutenancy and The New Barracks Tenants Co- Operative. He organised fundraising events by bag packing at Sainsburys Regent Road and with family and friends.The trip which is also part funded through an Army bursary scheme. Next year after finishing at Salford College Niall starts training to become a paramedic.

On Tuesday nights we have lots of young people rehearsing a new version of Oliver Twist.  Its called Ollie Wiva Twist – produced by Tracie and Dan from the Salford Foundation.
All the young people taking part, are from Salford. The final production takes place at the Lowry – August 25th.  Proceeds from the show are being donated to SLC and the Salford Foundation Trust.

Veteran volunteer Eric said “Blimey 99, I remember my first camp in 1946, how time fly’s” First timer  Dylan aged 10 said  “I’ve never been camping before, I’m really looking forward to playing football against a team from Aberystwyth”

Club president Anthony Groves will be dropping in to meet the party, 106 years after his Great Great Grandfather, James Grimble Groves attended the first camp in 1904.

We thought an evening of rowing would involve wearing life jackets and a trip down to the ship canal but no -the rowing event organised by the GMFCYP took place in the gym.

Plenty of technical wizardry was at hand to enable young people to learn the skills of rowing and to experience the thrill of a race.

Our intrepid team of bag packers spent a weekend at our local supermarket recently, raising funds for this years annual camp. Thanks to Sainsbury’s and customers for helping us raise a brilliant £1712 in 2 days.

3 members of the Cobra kickboxing Club have reached brown and black belt levels recently. Laura Ellis 1st Dan Black Belt, Cathy Morris, brown belt and Lee Morgan 3rd Dan Black Belt.
9 young club members and adult volunteers have taken part in a national first aid training course at the club over the past 2 weeks.

Salford Lad and  rugby league star Charlie Pawsey returned to the club yesterday . Charlie was captain of Leigh RLFC, an England star and also captained the Great Britain team on the tour of Australia in 1950.

Archie, a life long fan of the game recalled Charlie’s exploits on the pitch for Leigh, England and Great Britain  Charlie was also at Manchester United before WW2 but switched to Rugby League after the war. His SLC membership record shows he attended the 1937 camp, played netball for the club and his first job was as a cabin boy. Charlie spent his working life on the docks becoming a stevedore.

Music and sports stars helped launch the Man United Foundation Kickz project at the club recently. Cult band Kid British , Legendary local boy Peter Hook and Manchester United’s Owen Hargreaves came along to meet  young people  involved in the 8 week project.

The event was captured by Stephen Wright  and sports writer Henry Winter for the Daily Telegraph.
