Top of the league in 2012

Our new open age football team which started in September 2011 are currently top of their League.
The team are managed jointly by volunteer Mike Murray (L) and club leader Leon Warmington (C)
Volunteer Ben Sellick (R) is the secretary. The team have also reached the quarter finals of the Sunday
League Cup , so it’s a great start to 2012. The table below shows the top six places.

SLC Triumph at Snooker Competition

SLC members William Doyle, Casey James and Kyle Hili took the top three places in the Greater Manchester Federation of Clubs for Young People under 14 snooker competition.
The final was held at Stockport Lads’ Club last night. William Doyle (L) once again came out as winner adding a second trophy to his pool win in December. Casey James (C) was runner up and Kyle Hili (R) won the 3rd place play off. All three will go through to the Northern Finals at Preston.

Christmas Treats at Salford Lads’ Club

Last Wednesday we had the annual Christmas party at the club. Special events included an assault course in the concert hall set up by volunteers Niall and Ryan, a quiz about the 100 SLC camps, pool competitions and lots of prizes.

On Christmas day a group of local neighbours from the New Barracks Co-operative organised a Christmas party for people to be together. It was a great idea and resurrected the idea of traditional parties that were held on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

BBC Football Focus live from the gym

Today we had a fantastic event in the club, BBC Sport’s Football Focus programme was broadcast in front of a live audience from the gym. The programme was presented by Dan Walker, with the panel
of Lee Dixon, Mark Lawrenson, Robbie Savage and special guest Michael Vaughan.
The audience were football fans who had travelled from many parts of the country to be here. We gave everybody a tour of the club including the boxing gyms, billiards room, concert hall and Smiths room. We’d like to thank everyone who came along and to the whole team from BBC Sport for making it such an enjoyable event.

3rd Pool competition win for SLC

Alex Scott won the under 16 Greater Manchester Pool competition last night to become our 3rd finalist this season. Alex beat Connor Scudder of Droylsden Youth Centre in the final.
We now have the under 12, under 14, and under 16 winners at the club, and all of them will go forward to the northern finals in Preston in 2012.

Baking, fit for a Queen.

The Wai Yiu Chinese Women’s Society from Manchester were in the club this week, creating a traditional English high tea in our Edwardian surroundings. The group did some baking in the kitchen, then served up a wonderful display of sandwiches, Victoria Sponge Cakes and English tea. The whole event was documented and will be part of an arts project that opens at Manchester City Art Gallery next year.

They’ve done it again

William Doyle and Dylan Kelly repeated last year’s performance by winning the GMFCYP pool competitions.
Dylan won the under 12 section and William moved up the age group to win the under 14 competition.
They will both go forward to the Northern Area finals in Preston.

Belly Dancing in the dark

Billed as an evening stroll with hot soup, visitors got quite a few
Surprises when they joined in a procession organised by ORDSOCS and
Friends of St. Ignatius. The idea was to use music, dance and drama to link two remarkable Edwardian buildings in one Salford street.
While the future of Salford Lads’ Club is looking good, the future of St Ignatius, at the bottom of the street is far less certain. More than 60 people took part in the event, which was part of The Seven sites project.

Science comes to Salford Lads’ Club

Yesterday we hosted an amazing science event as part of the month long Manchester Science Festival. A team from Salford University set up experiments and workshops in the gym, kitchen, boxing gym and billiards room.

In the concert hall Dr Steve Rossington treated a delighted audience to the wonders of chemistry, creating explosions, bangs and flashes in a show that lived up to its title “Louder than bombs”
