Tony O'Keeffe from Mallow was fishing at Kilmurry with his father Dan
and caught this 6.6lb. fish on Flying C on the Island Stream on Lower
Kilmurry. Sea-lice can be seen in the picture - two on the top of the
tail and one below the adipose. There were more on the back & the head
of the fish. They also caught a few kelts. There was a couple of rods
out on Friday that also caught a few kelts, but also saw a fresh
springer show that they estimated at 15-20lb. - also on Lower Kilmurry.

One of the world's most notorious freshwater invasive species, the Asian
clam, has expanded its hold in Ireland's rivers. Discovered in the River
Barrow in April this year, Dr Brian Hayden of Queen's University Belfast
identified an Asian clam shell below the main bridge in
Carrick-on-Shannon. A subsequent survey by Inland Fisheries Ireland
(IFI) scientists revealed the presence of live clams in this section of
the River Shannon.

Salmon Fly For Fast Flowing Peaty Water

The Glenfarclas fly is Scottish by birth but its success on fast peaty
waters has placed it firmly in the sights of salmon fishermen in
Ireland. The fly was invented by James Chalmers as an entry into a
competition run by the Glenfarclas Whiskey Company. The rules of the
competition dictated that the fly be tied using the company colours,
which turned out to be for the best as the salmon on Speyside seemed to
take to it very well.

River Status Changes For 2010

There have been a few river status changes for 2010, some perhaps more
interesting than others. My personal favourite is the re-opening of the
River Clady (Letterkenny District), which is now catch & release for
2010, after being closed for this past few years. The Eske has also been
re-opened to catch & release for 2010. I'm still looking forward to
the re-opening of the Lackagh but we'll have to wait for another year as
it remains closed for 2010.

The Loughs Agency has announced that the 2010 angling fair will be held
at a riverside location in Newtonstewart, County Tyrone. The venue has
been selected because of its central location within the Foyle catchment
area, and its proximity to the rivers Strule and Owenkillew.
