Salmon fishing is such a enjoyable and rewarding sport. However, if you are prepared correctly, it can also lead to great disappointment should you come home empty-handed. To catch salmon in rivers, you have to appreciate the very nature of these tasty little guys. While salmon navigate rivers, they are known for often being tough to capture as they can quickly escape. When startled, salmon have been known vacate the area fairly quickly as they already have a jumpy disposition. The best salmon river fishing tips to follow are to be familiar with the behavior of salmon, be acquainted with the river you are fishing, and use the correct equipment.

To find a good river to fish, do your research. Find a river known to have deep pools and rocky areas as this is where salmon are known to abide. Also, you will need more than just a general brochure or guide. You will need the word of local fishermen or bait shop employees. These guys will be the most familiar with the particular river and its contents. Another important salmon river fishing tip is to go in the correct season. Typically, salmon swim upstream for spawning between the months of April and July and head back out to sea by August of September. Make certain of the river’s rules on salmon fishing season and the amount of fish you are allowed to catch.

Finally, get your gear in order. You will need rugged equipment that is able to withstand all the pressure a fiercely struggling salmon can put on it. If not, you are likely to come home without any salmon and lacking some of your line and lures that you will lose to the salmon or the river. Check local fishing laws before attempting to use live bait as it may be prohibited in that area. Again, stop in your local bait shop and talk to the guys about what equipment and lures are most effective in that river. With these few salmon river fishing tips you are well on your way to a fruitful venture.

Fishing tackle could once only be found either in bait shops or in the homes of dedicated fishermen who crafted their own. However, this useful gear can be found almost anywhere these days. Shopping for gear online is now acceptable and common place, but if you are looking to buy salmon fly fishing tackle online, there are some important tips you should be aware of.

First and foremost, do your homework. If you know exactly what kind of equipment you need and are confident in your purchase, then you are all set in this area. For those of you who are a little less sure though, first research the very basics that you need to purchase. Rods, reels, lines, leads, lures, hooks, and even tackle boxes are all included in the category of tackle. Your specific type of tackle will vary depending on the area that you will fish and the type of salmon you target. You can check with other, more experienced fishermen, online forums, sporting goods stores, and fish and wildlife guides to choose the tackle that you want to purchase online.

Secondly, choose a website that has a good reputation to purchase your salmon fly fishing tackle from. A valid website will be easy to navigate, use shopping cart software, and have a variety of payment methods. The site will also sell several brands that you can also find in your local sporting goods store. You will want a store that has reasonably priced shipping as well as a sensible return policy. Research the stores online to ensure that you buy from a reputable source. Sites like fishing tackle unlimited and Cabela have been around for a while and are very reliable. Buying fly fishing tackle online can be both convenient and money saving. Follow this advice to find the best gear with no buyer’s remorse.

The same is true of salmon fishing hotels. You will want a hotel that can accommodate the size of your party and all of your interests.

The best hotel will have options that allow you to have the convenience of fishing nearby. This can be in the form of local fisheries or river and ocean fishing. If you prefer river and ocean fishing, choose a hotel that is very close to your ultimate destination.

Your perfect salmon fishing trip will not only depend on the type of weather and the area you decide to fish. While these factors are important, perhaps the most crucial steps you can make to ensure that you do well with your fishing venture is to have the proper salmon fishing equipment. The lines, rods, reels, and lures that you choose can make or break your trip.

The line that you choose for salmon fishing should be of high quality and of a superior braid variety. While mono filament is the preference of many anglers, fluorocarbon line is superior in strength. In many cases, the type of line that you need will be determined by the type of salmon you are trying to catch. For instance, to land a mammoth like a Chinook, you will need a super line like the Spiderwire Stealth Superbraid 300.

Where rods are concerned, the size and species of salmon you are after is also key. At any rate you will need a rod that is at least seven feet long and strong enough to handle not only the weight, but flexible enough to hold up against the fierce struggle that salmon put up. Graphite steel rods are great for spinning while models that feature aluminum oxide guides, like the Shimano Talora, are perfect for trolling. The best casting rods will also be reinforced with graphite.

St. Croix Avid Salmon and Steelhead Casting Rods $ 220.00
You may be staring down the barrel of some serious stuff back at the homefront or at work, but once the motor starts and you’re on the lake, all is right with the world. There’s nothing wrong with an Avid Series® casting rod, that’s for sure.

Finally, in many instances, you can purchase reel and rod in a combination that will work well. Moreover, when looking at reels, you need to find one that has a even drag system to make your reeling action virtually seamless. A jarring tension can cause the line to snap and the fish to get away with your lure.

Always make sure you use salmon fishing equipment that has been vetted by fellow anglers and don’t try to skimp on your materials. While it is not always necessary to have the most expensive equipment, you don’t want to have the cheapest gear either. To be certain, one will get what one pays for, so be wise in the choices you make on your salmon fishing tackle and gear purchases.

Fly fishing is a method of catching fish unlike any other. It can be quite exhilarating to stand out in a lake or stream and cast your line, seemingly at one with nature. This is the preferred method of many fishermen of catching the omega-3 rich fresh salmon. In order to have a successful venture, here are some basic salmon fly fishing tips.

Firstly, one little noteworthy tidbit is that salmon characteristically do not feed when in the river. However, as they are naturally aggressive, they are quite keen on striking, so they will go for the fly at the end of your line.

Secondly, you need to be aware that salmon fancy cooler temperatures. Though a beautiful sunny day may be you favorable for your comfort, salmon tend to go into deeper water to get to oxygen rich cooler waters. This makes them a little harder to catch. Fishing on a day with more cloud cover or shade is likely to bring you a higher yield of salmon.

Third on our list of salmon fly fishing tips is don’t forget to bring along an important tool. A thermometer is a pretty handy resource and can help you to gauge where to find the most fish.

Finally, remember to bring lots of flies. If salmon dive deeper and you continue to seek them out, you may lose some of your flies to stones, underwater plants, and other objects beneath the water’s surface. You will want to make sure you don’t go home empty handed just because you didn’t have enough flies to cast your line a few more times.

Fly fishing is a unique and rewarding experience. Salmon are particularly challenging and will provide you with great sport as you attempt to catch that prize fish. To aid in your quest, follow these simple, but effective salmon fly fishing tips.

Salmon fishing is a fun and invigorating sport. From the beginner to the avid outdoorsman, there is something that fishermen of all experience levels can gain from the activity. As every fisherman knows, or soon finds out, one of the most important keys to success is using the appropriate tools for the job. The type salmon fishing lure you use can mean the difference between coming home empty handed or reeling in the big ones.

For the novice, a fishing lure is an artificial item affixed to the fishing line’s end or hook which is created to look and move like the natural prey of a fish. The three most popular types of salmon fishing lure seem to be plugs, spoons, and spinners. Plugs are complete with the body shape of a fish and can really simulate the movements of a live fish when placed in water which will move them quite easily. When fishing in freshwater or saltwater lakes, plugs are ideal. Spoons are called so because they oval shaped and concave much like an actual spoon. They also move randomly in the water and also appeal to fish because of their ability to reflect light. This brightly colored tackle is great for catching big salmon out in the ocean. Finally, spinners are aptly named because of the twirling motion they make in the water. They generally have one or more reflective metal blades that help it to spin, enabling it to imitate the motion of small fish. These little fellows are perfect for the Northwest regions like Washington state and Oregon.

While many fishermen have an affinity for live bait, sometimes it is just not practical or even possible. These three types of salmon fishing lure are popular for a reason. When used in conjunction with a steady line and sometimes the aid of scenting, they can yield extraordinary results.

Salmon fishers everywhere know that catching the big fish does not mean a thing if you can’t hold on to him. The tackle you use and the strength of your fishing line is extremely important but so is the knot that you tie on that line. This can literally make or break your salmon catch. If you don’t want to lost your fish or your tackle, you had better learn quickly to tie a proper knot. Your salmon fishing knot should be both strong and tight so that the big fish you are going after won’t be able to get away by snapping it.

Firstly, make sure you have good, quality line. Salmon fishing is different than fishing for others as they are particularly strong and vigorous fish. Just think how hard they have to work to swim upstream for spawning! Get rid of any line that is old or has been damaged as it will hurt your chances of properly tying salmon fishing knots. Secondly make sure that you lubricate your line when tying your knot. Dish washing liquid will do the trick for you as long as you wash it off the line when the knot is done. Lubricant will keep the line from any friction and heat caused by tying a dry line, further weakening your knot. Finally, you will want to make sure that you use a knot that you can actually tie well. There are so many different knots out there that you can try and some of them are very detailed. However, the simplest, strongest knot that can be used with a several different types of line is the Palomar.

To tie the Palomar, simply make a loop in the fishing line and move it through the eye of your hook. Next, tie an overhand knot with that loop that allows the hook to hang freely. Then, move the loop over the hook and secure the knot. If you follow these simple steps, you will be tying salmon fishing knots like a pro.
