The 1st Layer: Establishing Necessary Ambient Lighting

Multiple layers of light maximize the livability and beauty of an interior space. Proper layering of the three lighting types begins by establishing the “base” required to the light the room safely and evenly. Ambient lighting is the functional foundation of a lighting plan – which isn’t to say that the fixtures that provide it must be less than beautiful. Chandeliers stand out as artistic centerpieces, while serving as a base layer of lighting. Pendants, flush mounts, and semi-flush mounts can also be used as a room’s primary light source.

To determine a room’s ambient lighting requirement:

• Multiply the room’s square footage by 1.5 to determine the minimum number of watts needed from incandescent bulbs.
• For example: a 15′x15′ room contains 225 square feet, which multiplied by 1.5 equals 338 watts needed for ambient lighting.
• That means, If a chandelier takes 9, 40 watt bulbs the 360 watt total output of the fixture would be sufficient.
