Joya. Even the name (pronounced joy-ah) elicits a peaceful easy feelin’. But as the new kid on the resort spa block, did it live up to its name and budding reputation? Oh yah. Did it ever.

I visited the spa mid-summer with my spa-savvy sister-in-law in tow. A high-powered admin assistant, she was as fried and frazzled as I was, and we agreed to leave our worries in the resort parking deck and squeeze every inch of relaxation out of this splendid day. And that, it turns out, was way beyond easy.

Joya Spa is a magnificent two-storied respite in the aptly named town of Paradise Valley. Home to the super rich and other acclaimed spas such as Camelback Inn and Sanctuary, PV sets the perfect backdrop for the Omni Scottsdale at Montelucia with its scenic manicured landscapes dotted with ancient saguaro cactus and Camelback Mountain vistas in the distance. We arrived on a blinding sunny morning when the temperature was making the climb to its average summer sweet spot of about 105 degrees. Eager for a dose of AC, we hustled through the enchanting little garden area that guards the spa’s gigantic aged wooden doors and slipped into the spa. Not only were we immediately enveloped in the cool of the dimly lit reception area but completely transported by the exotic, other worldly atmosphere of the Moroccan decor and Moorish architecture. After checking in, we were led up the dramatic staircase that lines the circular wall to the second floor.

Aesthetically, the spa is stunning. But not in an over-the-top Vegas way. More in a mindful, no-details-spared way. Striking artwork welcomes you at the top of the stairs and orchestras of flickering flameless candles beckon you along. As you make your way deeper into the spa, the light softens and it’s as if you’re entering the belly of some palatial hideaway. We were led along the hallway to our first stop — a domed room where we each picked a stone from a central pedestal and placed it on an alter to clarify our intention for the visit. Then, off to another dramatic alcove centered by an amethyst-colored crystal pedestal illuminated by twinkling fiber optic lights above. Finally, we were shown around the spacious women’s lounge.

We changed and met back in the women’s waiting area, a warmly colored room lined with couches and puffy throw pillows. After a few sips of hot tea, my sis was whisked away for her Cherry Harvest Festival body treatment and I was off to my custom massage. My therapist led me to the treatment room where I was left to settle into the massage bed, which was draped in exquisitely soft linens. The warmly appointed, dimly lit room was elegant yet simple and white-glove spotless. My therapist, though she seemed young, was skilled at seeking out my rough spots.

Afterward, drowsy from the massage, I plodded into the women’s quiet room — a room lined along one side with beds separated by breezy curtains. The “whisper room” as it’s called doesn’t even have a hint of music and I promptly fell into a trance-like sleep (the kind of sleep where you’re thankful for the privacy curtain … drool, ewww). I awoke just in time for my next treat — the spa’s signature Hammam service.

There’s something to be said for discovering the amenities of a spa on your own. However, the Hammam ritual is possibly the best introduction to a spa’s heart that I’ve ever experienced. The treatment started in a wet room where the therapist gave me a brisk scrub using a traditional Turkish black soap and rough cloth. Then — and this made me a little nervous — she grabbed one of several large buckets of warm water to rinse away the soapy residue. Oh man, who knew having a bucket of warm water poured over you would feel so amazing. After I was all rinsed and squeaky clean, she led me the few steps to the neighboring Hammam — a moderately heated room with a reclining bench of tiny pearlescent tiles. She instructed me to relax here for about 10 minutes and then head to the steam, cool off under the cold plunge, hot tub, sauna and finally bring my body temp down with one more cold plunge. I followed her instructions to the tee, enjoying the details of each station — the extremely steamy steam room, the intimidating though completely refreshing cold plunge shower, the beautifully tiled hot tub and the spacious sauna. You can use all but the wet room and Hammam on your own but the full ritual is a must if you visit Joya. I absolutely insist.

My sis and I spent the rest of the day paddling around the rooftop pool, lounging on the cushy chairs and nibbling on the complimentary fresh fruit and tea. We ordered a flatbread pizza from the spa menu (complete with cocktails if that’s your thing) and gobbled down the healthy version of ‘za with creamy fresh-made mozzarella and roasted tomatoes. The day was completely enjoyable, down to the tiniest detail.

And yes, I’ve left many a detail about Joya Spa out only so you’ll have a few surprises along the way during your visit. But after looking back on the overall experience, I keep coming back to one memory from that day that defined it for me. I was in the pool with my chin rested on my folded arms on the ledge facing Camelback Mountain. The sun was beginning to set and a ripple of clouds was beginning to form in the distance, casting intricate shadows on the craggy mountain backdrop. I remember taking a few deep breaths and being overcome by a feeling of peace, of appreciation, of unadulterated Joy. Joy-ahhh. A fitting name for a magical place.

Believe it or not, it’s rare these days that head Spa Girl Sunny actually has time to spend a day at the spa (crazy, huh?). So when she decided to go, she went big and chose Well & Being Spa as the place to waste away a few valuable hours just hanging at the spa. In the interview that follows, Sunny and friend Jasmine share their impressions and experiences. Both girls indulged in the spa’s signature Havasupai Body Oasis Experience, an amazing two-hour treatment designed for relaxation and inspiration.

Sunny: So our first order of business: change into our spa duds and check out the amenities in the women’s locker room…because they wouldn’t let us in the men’s locker room (cheesy smile). How ’bout that locker room?

Jasmine: Well I really liked their nifty keypad locker system. I have some freaky compulsion about not having things in my pocket…must be the New Yorker in me. Anyway, the hands-free thing was great.

S: Didn’t you lock yourself out of your own locker though?

J: You don’t forget anything, do you?

S: I could’ve lived in that locker room! I was driving some poor woman crazy in there because I couldn’t sit still. First, I spent about four seconds in the whirlpool. Then I went into the steam room but I almost fainted. So I tried to relax in the hot sauna but kept imagining that Seinfeld episode where Kramer was frying his skin on the roof with butter so I didn’t last in there very long. Then I dipped a toe in the cold plunge…it was really cold…so I tried the Swiss shower for about half a second. It’s exhausting to be me…(big breath). Actually though, the eucalyptus inhalation room was the one place I almost relaxed! It was wonderful.

J: I tried the Swiss shower too. It was kind of scary at first and apparently someone really tall had been in there before me but once I adjusted all umpteen of the showerheads, I really liked it. But then I took a regular shower because I had just worked out and it’s such a luxury…taking a long steamy shower.

S: You clearly need a man.

J: I know! One of my favorite things was that our spa slippers were crystal clear so if you had a pedicure, it would look so pretty! Hey, it’s the little things, you know.

S: So how’d you like our nutritious and delicious lunches?

J: Well, I must say, I was tempted to go for the tuna sandwich but I’m so glad that I tried the shrimp and scallop dish instead. It was delicious and really filling…I actually couldn’t finish it

S: That’s ’cause you were talking so much. I finished mine.

J: Hey, I don’t get out much. I was just worried that I wouldn’t get my sweet tooth satisfied with this healthy lunch thing, but the streusel muffin was great. I really loved just sitting out in that courtyard.

S: Yeh, that was the best part. Okay girlie, give our readers a quick synopsis of the Havasupai treatment.

J: Well, it starts in the women’s waiting area. The therapist greets you and escorts you outside to the falls. The falls are amazing…three streams of water, each with a different strength…the ultimate luxury. I felt like I was in one of those travel commercials. Then we dried off and went back to the waiting area for a foot bath. I loved the porcelain basins they used and the teak trays for our tea…the details were amazing and the therapist explained everything as he went.

S: I was curious about that–you got a male therapist and I got a female. I’m way too modest for a male therapist. How was it?

J: Oh I have no problem with that. He was amazing and he was definitely a healer.

S: So then we were each escorted to individual therapy rooms for the rest of our treatment. What was your favorite part of the treatment?

J: Oh, just how it kept going and going…just when you thought it was over, some other wonderful thing would be done…I was scrubbed and then took that amazing bath and then the massage. The smells too–eucalyptus, rosemary, citrus. But when it was over, I still wanted more!

S: Yeh, it was the hydrotherapy bath that finally did me in. By the end of it, I was limp and nearly passed out. The therapist had to help me out of the tub. And that was probably the first time in my life that I actually relaxed for a massage. I mean I had to! She did have to ask me at one point to relax my neck…gotta stay a little tense, just in case there’s a fire or something. Honestly though, I was truly relaxed. I say “so” a lot, huh?

J: Yes, but I like you anyway.

S: SOOOO, what was your favorite thing about Well & Being?

J: Mostly that the place is so huge. You could easily go there with four or five people but still give each other plenty of space. I mean, there was so much space that you didn’t get on my nerves at all.

S: You only got on my nerves that one time. Yeh, and there’s something interesting at every turn there too–in the design, architecture and that pool…wow! When can we go back?

J: Next time you get a day off!.

An enchanting visit to Agave Spa at Westin Kierland’s grand resort.

Okay, I admit it, I love my job. The endless hours hunched over the computer, the backs of my legs stuck to the fake leather of my creaky desk chair, are all worth it on days like today. ‘Cause today, I went to the spa. And not just any spa–I went to one of the newest spas on Arizona’s already rich spa scene: Agave, The Arizona Spa at the Westin Kierland Resort.

It was the last day of March, a month that had brought about a wicked slew of new gray hairs on my head, and I arrived at the resort determined to give this tumultuous month a memorable send-off. Taking advantage of the complimentary valet service, I grabbed my tote and began my journey by following an outdoor path that led to the stand-alone spa, salon and fitness building. I’m a bit directionally impaired and I gave the spa bonus points right away for being so incredibly easy to find — too many times I’ve wondered aimlessly around resorts looking for the spa. And with just a few whiffs of the blooming orange blossoms on the citrus trees that lined the path, my spirit was already beginning to lift, especially once I took in the inviting pool area flanked by private cabanas and an outdoor bar and restaurant just outside the doors of the spa.

Once inside, more bonus points. In one sweeping glance from the spa reception desk, I spotted the aerobics studio, a weight room, a juice bar, the salon entrance and a boutique brimming with beauty products and apparel. No getting lost here. The front desk attendants checked me in and off I went to experience one of Agave’s signature treatments: the Agave Enchantment, an 80-minute hydrating body treatment designed to restore balance and well-being.

The gracious attendant gave me a quick tour of the women’s locker area, and I was left to change into my spa robe and slippers, take in the amenities, sip on the delicious agave limeade and lounge in the quiet waiting room. At the center of the locker room was a whirlpool where the sun danced off the water from the brilliant skylight above it. The whirlpool was framed by a spectacular tiled wall mural of a bubbling stream, which I later found out was a photo taken at Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona and reproduced on two-inch tiles by artist Craig Primas. A similar scene was also created for the men’s locker area. I had no sooner shuffled into the waiting area than I was summoned by my therapist, Lisa, who escorted me the Mescal room for my treatment.

Softly lit and spacious, the Mescal room was equipped with a shower and reserved for full body treatments. The therapy table was draped by a striking handmade throw embellished by an image of an agave plant. Before Lisa left the room to allow me to settle in, she invited me to leave my troubles in the Native American burden basket that guards occupied treatment rooms. Wondering if the little basket might burst under the weight of all my issues, I mentally placed them in the basket nonetheless and felt the hinges of my jaws begin to untighten and a deep breath well up from my belly. Peace was just around the corner.

Skillful and proficient, Lisa spoke with the softest voice and made sure that I was completely comfortable throughout the treatment. The Agave Enchantment began with a full body exfoliation with an Ayate cloth, made from the fibers of the agave leaves. She then applied a hydrating body mask rich with agave extracts and essential oils. Cocooned in mylar to allow the mask to penetrate, I was given an intense scalp massage with an aromatic agave, citrus and hazelnut infused oil. My treatment culminated in a full body Swedish massage that reduced me to a near comatose state of relaxation. After the shortest but most heavenly 80 minutes in recent memory, I was led back to the relaxation area to revel in my hypnotic noodle state.

Enchanted? Oh heavens, yes. Even as I sit here–legs firmly restuck to my pleather desk chair–I still can’t help but think: I love my job. Thanks to the wonderful treatment, even in recollection, I feel a little dreamy all over again. Now if I can just get a hold of one of those burden baskets–in super size of course–I’ll be set.

Spa Avania at the Hyatt Regency Scottsdale is undeniably gorgeous in its architecture and decor, and the nurturing time-of-day philosophy is undoubtedly brilliant. But I’d have to peg the people — from the reception staff to the highly skilled therapists — as the primary reason for the Avania experience being so emotionally elevating and memorable.

I arrived at the spa bright and early on a June day that was so hot, the stiff air gave you chills. Oh, and it was also my birthday — a day when more than anything else, I want to snap my crabby shell shut and just be my naturally broody, sulky Cancer self for a day. With no makeup, no cell phone, and no expectations other than to hide away, I slipped into the cool reception lobby of the spa.

My treatments scheduled for my mini getaway were the Crushed Pearl Facial — a treatment to brighten and even out skin tone — and the Crushed Pearl Wrap — a luxurious scrub and body wrap to revitalize skin. After checking in, I headed off to the women’s lounge to change, explore every inch of the spa’s famed amenities (I’ll get to my favorite one shortly!) and await my crushed pearl adventure. Just as a sidenote, I’d been to the spa previously for an event and knew the layout well so I declined the tour. But if you go, I would recommend that you take the spa attendant up on the walk-through so you don’t miss anything.

When it was time for my treatments, my therapist, Naira, escorted me to the treatment room where I was given the choice of music for my journey. I opted for Indian and settled into the cushy treatment bed draped in silky soft sheets. Naira was friendly and professional but like an artist, it wasn’t until she got started on my facial that her true talent became apparent. Long, soothing stokes set my tight jaw at ease and luscious potions and masks from the Italian Comfort Zone skincare line sent me off into la-la land. We switched to the Vichy shower wet room for my wrap, which was equally amazing.

After the treatments, Naira walked with me back to the indoor women’s meditation lounge, where I met up with a girlfriend who was meeting me there for the day. No sooner had we delved into some juicy chitchat than she was whisked away for her Mineral Massage, leaving me to eat up a few more chapters of my book (I’ve been reading Barbara Walters’ memoir Audition for what seems like ages. It’s good but man, is she wordy!). My friend returned about an hour later with a full-on, post-massage glow. After proclaiming it the best massage she’d ever had, she promptly fell asleep.

Our day was laced with dips in the mineral pool and outdoor whirlpool and a delicious lunch served in the women’s lounge, which has glass doors that open out to a lush private women’s relaxation area. The only low point was the dingbat guy at the mineral pool chirping away on his cell phone. (Has he not read our spa etiquette tips section? Sheesh!) But Spa Avania is so spacious that after a few minutes of his inconsiderate chatter, we moved to another area of the pool and his voice was drowned by the water fountain that serves as a backdrop to the pool. The day went by all too fast.

Oh, so I have to tell you about the showers. My friend and I were meeting our husbands at the Hyatt’s celebrated Alto ristorante that evening (which was outstanding by the way) so primping was in order. Of the many amenities Avania has to offer — both inside and out — the changing room showers are the crowning glory in my book. The two walk-in showers are each equipped with rain showers overhead and a Swiss cascading system with six high-pressure heads along the sides. Plus a hand-held shower head to boot. I took my time turning every knob and making sure the temp was just right. After slathering up head to toe in Avania’s own hair and body concoctions, I just stood there, enjoying the massaging action of the multiple shower heads and realizing that nowhere was my former broody, sulky self to be found. I was just grateful and happy to be right where I was at that moment.

Spa Avania is a peaceful, architecturally divine retreat where you’ll find some of the finest and friendliest staff this side of the Grand Canyon. And one rockin’ shower experience. Go, and enjoy!

Discovering yourself through the Luk Pra Kope ritual at Sanctuary Spa.

A friend recently told me that she had never been to the illustrious Sanctuary Spa without spotting a celebrity (Al Sharpton, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, the Bennifer baby).

I saw not a single famous person the day I went. Not even a famous person’s kid. I was however a mega superstar myself. See today, I was playing the role of Julia Roberts – legs up to my eyeballs, an infectious laugh and a protruding yet endearing upper lip. I had just seen the movie “Eat, Pray, Love” the night before and was craving a journey laced with meaning and personal insights. But the real me has a tightly wound core of anxiety and worries (what’s going to happen to all the trash?) held together by a thin string of guilt. Relaxing is a challenge for me. What’s that saying about the shoemaker’s kids having no shoes? Anyway, so in the spirit of breathing deep and letting go, I decided to channel Julie Roberts channeling Liz Gilbert (the book’s author) and give us all permission to fully embrace the journey ahead.

Whew, and what a journey it was.

Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain is tucked away on what feels like hallowed ground in the sleepy town of Paradise Valley. While Sanctuary Spa debuted in June 2002 (the same month in fact that Arizona Spa Girls was launched), the resort has a legacy that dates back to the 1950s when it was first conceived as a tennis club by a handful of Hollywood tycoons. The property, though completely renovated in 2001, has retained an air of historical significance and the architectural influence of Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic style. The backdrop of the less-traveled side of Camelback Mountain only adds to the otherworldly experience that defines Sanctuary.

My journey that day was the Luk Pra Kope (pronounced like “Luke pra cope”) – a 2-hour ritual that incorporates Indonesian healing therapies to encourage energy flow throughout the body. The treatment name translates as “healing through medicinal herbs” and refers specifically to the Thai herbal poultices – heated, muslin-wrapped compresses containing steeped herbal concoctions – that are used during the service. You ease into the two hours first with a lime foot ritual and then your muscles are gently stretched, rocked and kneaded throughout the treatment using Thai massage movements.

But first, the duds.

Dona, the ladies locker room attendant, smiled as she handed me a soft black shirt and pants big enough for a Sumo wrestler. She showed me how to tie the ginormous pants and gave me illustrated tying directions as back-up. I later found out that the outfit is patterned after that of a Thai fisherman and is traditionally worn in Thailand before treatments. Once I slipped them on, I didn’t feel a bit like the leggy movie star I was channeling – more like a squat, Kung Fu fighter ready to bust a move on a wooden board – but they were comfortable and the loose fit would soon come in handy.

My therapist, Azure, came for me and escorted me and my sexy pants across the spa’s outdoor Sanctum and into the treatment room. She was as exotic looking as her name sounds and had an aura of gentle practicality that made me instantly trust her – and want to be her best friend. Once she had given me a brief overview of what was to come, we chatted about movies and books during the foot treatment.

Which brings me to the crux of this review. Do I spill every detail or leave them out for you to unfold on your own? I’ve read a lot of spa treatment reviews in my day and I find sometimes that they can be a bit like reading about someone’s interpretation of a book or movie. And the kicker is that they always give away the ending. I’m not going there this time.

No, instead I’m going to give you a few ways you can think about this truly unique spa journey and let you experience the ending on your own.

You can think of it as:

An exercise in trust. Yes, someone is balancing the weight of their entire body on the back of your thighs. Yes, someone is (ever so gently) stretching your leg in a direction you did not previously know it could go. And yes, these are some magic pants.

A hot stone massage. Minus the stones. On crack.

A private, deep stretch yoga class where your only job is to breath and manage your deluge of thoughts. And if the song “Right Here, Right Now” by Jesus Jones pops in your head, just go with it.

I would bet that after you have this treatment, you can think of other ways to describe it. But for me, I thought of it as all the above at various moments throughout the 120 minutes.

Which brings me back to Julia (aka Liz). As Azure had mentioned during our earlier chat, there were stories about women who, after reading “Eat, Pray, Love,” had suddenly left their husbands and jetted off to exotic locales to find themselves. At some point during the stretching and kneading, our conversation floated back into my psyche and I thought: Now why the heck would you do that when we have opportunities like this all around to find yourself? You are right here. You are RIGHT here. That was my thought. (And hence the Jesus Jones song reference.)

As Azure escorted me back to the ladies lounge, I felt taller, open … okay, I felt like me again. Not Julia Roberts, just me. Full of anxieties and worries that had been softened by appreciation, gratitude and self-acceptance. I don’t have legs up to my eyeballs nor do I have a protruding upper lip. Two things I can totally live with if I know the real me is within such an easy reach.

Sanctuary Spa is truly a sacred place. You’ll want to get to the spa well before your treatment time and soak up the spirit of this place (and the Red Flower Asian Neroli Body Wash and Lotion in the ladies lounge). And stay well after dark so you can gaze out across the twinkling Phoenix Valley from the resort’s jade bar or elements restaurant. Maybe you’ll spot a celebrity. Or maybe you’ll get a glimpse of yourself. Either way, you won’t be disappointed.

Spa Girls review of their enchanting Mii amo excursion.

Bliss is a dish best shared. Or at least in the case of a visit to one of the world’s top destination spas. In mid-September, the Spa Girls team set out for a two-day odyssey to the magical Enchantment Resort, home of Mii amo, a destination spa at Enchantment in Sedona.

We spent our first day getting acquainted with the spa and the second, exploring the Enchantment grounds. We were on a mission to turn this highly acclaimed destination upside down and figure out what made it tick. We checked under all the cushions. Tasted every dish. Climbed the highest peak to peer down on the property. Sniffed the sheets on the spa treatment table. And what did we find? A piece of bliss of our own.

Head Spa Girl Sunny sat down with cohorts Melissa (Meliss), Alexis (Lex) and Samantha (Sam) to get their perspectives on the experience. Here’s a slice of the conversation.

Sunny: So, girls. Life is good as a Spa Girl, huh? (Enthusiastic head shakes all around.) Let’s start with your first sight of the Enchantment property. Was it anything like what you expected?

Meliss: It is more amazing than I even anticipated! The pictures that I’ve seen online and in magazines are beautiful, but they don’t do the property justice. I can be a pretty high-strung person, but just the beauty of Mii amo makes you want to chill out and find peace.

Lex: I’ve been to Sedona a ton of times and never been to a place that truly gives you that feeling of peace and relaxation that everyone in Sedona always talks about. I have to say, I was amazed and it was exactly what I needed — an escape from all the ciaos.

Sam: Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect. I had only seen pictures in magazines and they definitely don’t do the resort justice. It was breathtaking to drive into this private piece of heaven surrounded by the red rocks.

Sunny: Okay, on to the heart of the matter: The Spa. What a place, huh? Zen, unpretentious, minimalist, breathtaking. I liked the indoor pool juxtaposed against the gigantic wood-burning fireplace. How cool was that? Your impressions of the space?

Lex: The simplicity of the spa design was so perfect. I was intrigued with how the space was divided and how they integrated the subtle yet purposeful elements of fire, wind and earth.

Sam: Walking into the spa I immediately felt all of my stresses melt away. It might sound trite but it’s true! The girl who greeted us at the front desk had the warmest smile and really made you feel welcome from the very start. As we walked in to start our tour of the spa, I caught a glimpse of a woman reading a book and enjoying a meal in the comfort of her spa robe. She honestly looked like she didn’t have a care in the world and soon that become my reality too. I thought one of the neatest things was the large, family-style table in the cafe. You have a perfect view of the chef preparing the meals and, as I came to learn later, they even offer cooking demonstrations from that same location.

Meliss: The Spa is huge but has a cozy vibe. I felt the desire to tiptoe around so I wouldn’t disturb any of the Journeys going on — which by the way, sounds like the coolest thing! The design of the spa is clean and crisp with accents that complement the red rocks in the distance … it’s exactly what one would expect to see in a beautiful place like Sedona.

Sunny: We kicked off our second day in the Crystal Grotto room with a guided meditation. Did you leave that experience with a renewed sensibility or some slice of introspection? I learned that my heart is huge and open and blooming, but my head is a fuzzy frazzled place. Could have been the prickly pear margaritas the night before. Heh.

Sam: I have to admit, I always feel a bit uncomfortable in situations like this. I went in not knowing what to expect and not sure I would like what I was getting myself into. Once we stood up and the burning sage started to fill the air, I could feel myself go into a deeply relaxed state and was truly able to focus on our guide’s words. As I left the Grotto I thought how nice it would be to start every morning like that. What a better day each morning would be if I took a few minutes to walk myself through a head-clearing ritual like this.

Meliss: Despite my massive coughing attacks — boo for end-of-summer colds — I loved the guided medication. It was the perfect way to start off the day … the beating drum, the chanting, soothing voice and the smell of sage burning. I walked out of the Grotto feeling ready to take on the day.

Lex: The coolest part for me was being able to write down my worries and put them in the burden box before we went in. I found out the pieces of paper are later burned. Then I have to say, I was a little wary of the Grotto ritual. I have a really hard time quieting my mind and every time my star gazer lily started to bloom in my heart during the visualization, random thoughts would make it disappear. I proceeded to take deep breaths and focus on the drum and voilà!

Sunny: So tell me about your treatment. What did you have?

Sam: I had a 60-minute massage. With the few hints of my life I had given her during our short walk to the treatment room, she was able to identify parts of my body I hadn’t even realized were tight. She spent the majority of our session working out the tough areas from my athletic training and finished with a relaxing scalp massage. My body was practically floating by the time she was done and it took me a few minutes to bring myself to leave the table and get my robe back on.

Meliss: A 60-minute massage, and it was unreal. I actually drifted into a coma-like state during the treatment, which I am never able to do because I always have something on my mind. One of the coolest things about the treatment rooms at Mii amo is that most of them have windows looking out into the amazing red rocks of Sedona. So while your laying down in utter bliss, you can sneak a peek out the window at one of the most spectacular views you’ll ever see.

Lex: I had never had a body wrap, so I decided to give it a try. The treatment was 90 minutes and included a massage. I have to admit, when the therapist described what he was going to do, my modesty kicked in. He first was going to exfoliate my skin with a small brush and then rub a Sedona red clay mask on my entire body. Unfortunately, my curious mind also kicked in! Is there a guide for how to quiet your mind while spa-ing? Anyway, after the clay was applied, he wrapped me up like a mummy for the clay to bake on. If you’re the least bit claustrophobic, this treatment could totally freak you out. For me, being all bundled up cozy and warm was the best feeling of the day. I actually sighed when he told me he was going to unwrap me and then I was to jump in the shower and wash it all off. So, I showered while the therapist was cleaning up the clay wrap bundles. In any other circumstance, this would be a violation of my marriage — showering naked in front a hot male massage therapist — but I did it! After my shower, the massage table was completely fresh and ready for the next part of the treatment — my favorite, the massage! It was amazing. Instead of oil, the therapist used a rosemary scented cream, which triggered my senses into complete relaxation. I left the massage in a well-needed trance and with extremely silky skin!

Sunny: Okay so I had the Watsu treatment and let me tell you, it was an out-of-this-world, out-of-body experience. I was a little intimated at first by the intimacy of it – just me and my strapping Swedish massage therapist, Kalendar, hanging out in our swim suits in a private outdoor pool – the privacy drapes gently swaying in the breeze and the red rocks framing the view. I felt a little like I was cheating on the Spa Boy frankly but Kalendar was all business. He spent the first couple minutes prepping me for the treatment. He explained it like this: Remember when you were a little kid and used to fall asleep in the car and your mom or dad would carry you inside and put you to bed? You were out-of-it but still semi aware of what was happening around you. That’s the state he wanted me to allow myself to go. Free, trusting, childlike. So then he strapped some leg weights on me and off went. He cradled, stretched and dragged me gently through the water in a rhythmic way. Oh my gourd, it was seriously like being in a trance. Every once in a while, I had to peek an eye open to remind myself where I was. Uhhh, I wish I could go back there.

Meliss: Yeah, you were totally blissed out after your treatment! We all met at the pool after our treatments and were discussing how they were. Your were like, “hold on, I need some time!” You couldn’t even speak or describe her treatment for about 10 minutes after! I want to try that next time.

Lex: I was in my own world for a while after the massage. I mean, how could you not be? You walk out of the treatment room and are immediately “forced” to look out at the picture perfect blue sky and amazingly powerful red rocks! It’s so hard to describe the feeling I had, other than thankfulness, appreciation and for the first time on the trip — completely stress free!

Sunny: That was my favorite memory — hanging out in the outdoor hot tub together after our treatments. Everyone was all relaxed and aromatherapy-ized. Oh, and I liked sipping organic wine at sunset on the spa cafe patio. What was that wine? Anyway, so your fondest memory?

Sam: I think my fondest memory would have to be our drinks and treats on the Enchantment patio before dinner on the first night we were there. I have never tasted anything like that prickly pear margarita and it was so nice just sitting around in the fresh air chatting with the girls about our road trip and what was to come. The resort surroundings are so peaceful that being there, in that moment, it felt like the world was on hold. It was also really great to not have my phone attached to my hand per usual. Thank you cell service for being null and void on this trip! Although I hear they are getting reception soon. Maybe I’ll accidentally leave my charger at home next time!

Lex: My fondest memory would be the drinks on the patio too. The night sky is unreal at Enchantment. Untouched by light pollution. Oh, and the drinks were extremely tasty as well! Did I mention that the blood orange margarita is now my new drink of choice thanks to Enchantment?

Meliss: Yum, that wine was delish! My favorite memory of the trip was number one, the treatment and number two, the hike! It was so cool to go explore the canyons around the resort and learn about the Vortex. I felt all spiritual and Zen.

Sunny: Okay, my last question and it’s not an easy one so take your time. In one sentence (Okay, Sam, I’ll give you two!), how did your Mii amo experience change you or alter your perspective about yourself and where you are in your life? Or maybe how it changed your perspective of a what a spa immersion can do for your body, your spirit?

Meliss: I can’t do one sentence! For me, it helped me step back, stop and smell the roses — or sage, in this case! I always have a billion thoughts running through my mind that I find it so hard to not just relax, but to do any self-discovery. It was so amazing, for just two days, to feel like I didn’t need to check my cell phone — as much! — or make a to-do list in my head. It was about exploring, thinking and dreaming a little. It made me realize how much I’d probably benefit from doing one of the Mii amo Journeys. That’s on my five year plan (toothy grin).

Sam: I’ll follow the rules unlike miss Meliss! Leaving town and truly submerging yourself in the spa experience is something everyone needs to enjoy at least once in their lifetime. Not only was I able to relax during my session and the amenities I enjoyed after, I was truly able to escape from my stresses and discover myself and the person I had long forgotten – no phone, no laptop, just sheer bliss.

Lex: Well I can’t do one sentence either! My experience at Mii amo reinforced my perspective that a spa immersion is much more valuable than just a great massage. I think it’s important to get away from the daily grind and allow yourself the time and space to totally soak in healing vibes. It’s not just about the spa treatments and amenities. Mii amo really creates an environment that recharges your mind, body and yes — your soul. Every aspect of the resort, including the amazingly attentive staff, is all about healing — but not in a pushy, preachy way. I was completely stressed out when we got there and my mind was constantly fighting my body’s desire to relax. The overall Mii amo mantra truly helped override any stress I was feeling. The focus of the morning ritual, the power of restorative yoga and the true beauty that surrounds you at every turn makes Mii amo an absolute gift that everyone should experience!

Peace. That’s the word that resonates with me on the several occasions I’ve had to visit Aji Spa at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass. Once you make the turn off the I-10 freeway and cross into the expansive Gila River Indian Reservation, your pace naturally begins to slow. A gently curving two-lane road leads you into the property with a stream trickling alongside and the rolling golf greens just beyond. As you make your way toward the spa, you’ll occasionally have to touch the brakes so that a family of Gambel’s quail can strut across the street (they fly only in emergencies it seems). The landscape beyond the golf course looks rugged yet serene and is home to wild horses that roam among the Estrella Mountain foothills in the distance.

Ah, the spa. Aji (pronounced with a soft “j” sound) is the first structure you come to after the scenic drive. It seems to rise up out of nowhere as a shelter from the placid desert it guards. As I cross the wooden foot bridge that leads to the spa on this particularly gorgeous sunny day, the sound of a singular wooden flute and Native American drum beat welcomes me – so fitting for a property grounded in the traditions of the ancient Pima and Maricopa cultures that shaped the land.

The reception area is truly breathtaking with a painted domed skylight and an arched window that frames a view across the spa pool and distance mountains. Dark woods and decorative sconces cast shadows across the space, contrasting with the blazing Arizona sun outside. As I’m led from check-in toward the women’s lounge, I take in the intricate tile mosaics and paintings sprinkled throughout the spa that tell stories of the native people.

The spa attendant left me to settle into the spacious lounge and change into my spa robe, which I found expertly folded like a papoose with the belt in a tight coil like a snake in my locker. The women’s lounge rocks a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, showers, several vanity nooks and a private outdoor deck with another whirlpool. After taking it all in, I wandered into the co-ed relaxation room where I sipped tea from the refreshment bar and finally sunk into one of the full-length loungers to await my treatment.

My therapist was the resort’s cultural caretaker, Dawn Enos. I had chosen a treatment off the spa’s signature Indigenous Collection menu – rituals that honor authentic Native American traditions and developed by Dawn and Aji’s Pima and Maricopa tribal members.

I had decided on the Sacred Salt Wrap and my journey began with Dawn leading me on a short trek to the river behind the spa to gather the salt that would be used in my treatment. She explained as we walked how salt was vital to the native people both for cooking and medicinal purposes and that our walk was symbolic of a sacred salt journey.

Carrying the small bowl of salt, we headed back to the spa and entered a body treatment suite – complete with a shower and a steam capsule. The capsule is essentially a treatment table with a lid that envelopes you from the neck down in steam – excellent for detoxifying and losing a pound or two. First Dawn slathered my body in Shegoi oil made from the indigenous creosote plant and then covered me in the course salt grains from neck to feet. Then, she closed the lid and a warm mist slowly crept over my body while she massaged my scalp. At one point, she held her hands gently over my ears and my head filled with the sound of the ocean. Very trippy.

The treatment finished with me rinsing off followed by a final foot soak and scrub that Dawn explained would seal in positive energy. She gave me a small suede pouch of the remaining salt grains as a memento of my journey.

Afterward, suddenly famished, I hit the refreshment bar again for a handful of the spicy nut and seed mix I had spied earlier. The detoxification process was obviously still well in progress because no sooner had I licked the salt off my fingers from the tasty mix, when I was overcome with drowsiness. The rest of my visit was a bit hazy as I finished it out in a lounger by the pool. Suffice it to say, I left peaceful, thankful and grounded from a sense of true journey. That’s the beauty of Aji.

Recently, I had the privilege of experiencing the intimate offerings of the Tocaloma Spa & Salon at the Pointe Hilton at Tapatio Cliffs. As you might know, the Pointe Hilton resorts are equipped with water slides and lazy river pools and are known for being great destinations for families with children, but don’t let that convince you that rest and relaxation are the trade-off. Tocaloma does an impeccable job of creating the spectacular getaway that we spa girls crave while our families splash and play a mere 20 feet away.

Tocaloma isn’t your typical sprawling resort and offers a more intimate feel like that of a high-end salon. When I entered I was greeted by their extremely friendly and professional staff that includes women who’ve been on the Tocaloma team for well over 10 years. I was led passed the hair and nail stations toward the back of the spa, where I was given a locker and outfitted with a super-soft spa robe and a brand new pair of flip-flops. Then, I was escorted to the lounge area where I sipped fresh cucumber water while anticipating my first service.

Patsy, an aesthetician and massage therapist who has worked at Tocaloma for a whopping 17 years, came to take me in for my first two services. We entered a dimly lit room that held a heated bed, comfortable and soft, and smelled of deliciously calming skincare products. She explained what we’d be doing; it was their signature Red Wine and Green Tea Body Soufflé. To prep my skin for the fabulous benefits I’d be receiving, she used a skin brush to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. Then she covered my skin in this silky concoction of essential oils and vitamin C, filled with anti-aging benefits. The wrap was completed by covering my skin in soothing body milk intended to reduce cellulite and create a sense of peace; then, I was wrapped up to let the soufflé work its magic.

After the wrap I took a fabulous steamed, eucalyptus shower to remove the product from my skin then went back to Patsy for a Tocaloma Signature Massage. Suffice to say, the massage rocked too. Patsy was very attentive to my specific aches and pains and even spent extra time on my scalp, which I love!

Next I enjoyed a Seaweed Facial from Tocaloma spa pro Bonnie. I always wondered what benefits seaweed contributed to skin, and I learned that the plant is packed with vitamins, minerals and amino acids that revive, smooth and even out skin tone. Bonnie added a few gentle but necessary extractions and an exfoliating pumice treatment that left my face feeling cover girl refreshed.

My last service was a Shellac Manicure, something I had never experienced but heard a lot about. Laura, the manicurist, explained the process to me before she got to the task at hand. The manicure was unlike any other that I’ve had before. After each coat Laura instructed me to put my hands in a UV lamp for a specific amount of time; first 15 seconds then 2 minutes. After the color was finished, Laura applied a special top coat that sealed and dried my nails instantly. It was pretty amazing to be able to touch things immediately after a manicure.

Tocaloma may not be a biggest spa in town but their quality services, stellar staff and tailor-made attention cannot be beat. I will definitely be going back!

Pain FREE laser hair removal? Really? Yes, really! Read on!

If I had $200 and only two hours to spend it, I can guarantee Pure Vanity Spa would be the place I’d go. For a business in the Grayhawk neighborhood of North Scottsdale, this day spa takes the cake for great prices and an even greater experience. Tucked in the same plaza as The Good Egg and Primp and Blow, you could spend a full day of shopping and pampering in this little nook.

After a week that had flown by at work, I didn’t even know where to start on myself since I had neglected pretty much every inch of my body. I scheduled a full day of beautifying, which wasn’t as pricey as you may think. I got a killer deal through an AZ Spa Girls eblast (sign up for the eblast here!). The package included a 50-minute Custom Whole Body Massage, 50-minute Pineapple-Papaya Enzyme Facial, Crystal-Free Microdermabrasion and a lounge in the Aromatherapy Capsule Treatment Bed—all for only $109 (a $395 value)! Yep, you read it right—it’s good to be a Spa Girl!

I had two awesome treatments, to say the least. First, an incredibly relaxing full-body massage. The entire treatment was totally customized with exactly what I needed. My neck and shoulder had been bothering me and my therapist, Jamie, knew exactly how to work out the kinks.

The massage was immediately followed by an invigorating facial. I didn’t know what to expect since I had never tried microdermabrasion, but I really enjoyed it. I was scared that I might leave with red and irritated face but instead, my skin felt soft and super smooth and had absolutely zero redness. The aesthetician, Devin, then asked me if I’d like to try a product that was like a “work out for my skin” and I happily agreed. She then painted on a paprika-spiked mask from Eminence Organic that felt a little tingly after a few minutes of being on and left my skin looking rosy and refreshed. She even gave me a brow wax while I was there to straighten up my rough edges!

These two treatments were just what I needed, but the highlight of my visit was the laser hair removal that they offer. They call it “pain-free laser hair removal” but I figured I would be the judge of that. Plus, I could try it for FREE (yup, no joke!) in one area. I decided on my underarms.

I have to admit, I was a bit nervous at first. As much as I hate being hairy, I hate the RIP and the ZAP of removing hair even more. Melissa, my new best friend over at Pure Vanity, assured me that I would hardly feel a thing with the laser treatment.

I laid down on the treatment bed and she decked me out in some really cool looking laser-blocking glasses, put my arms over my head and went to work on my underarms. First was the gel. This was probably the most uncomfortable part of the entire process – just a cooling gel that is conductive to the laser process. Then she got the laser out. I held my breath and prepared for the worst as she swirled the laser gun around my underarm area … but that was it. Nothing. She said it might begin to feel warm as she continued, but I hardly felt a thing. And that was that, first armpit done! I laughed at myself a few times, but was pumped and ready to go for the second one. Voila! Ten minutes later, I was out of there with some fresh spray deodorant they provided too.

Now the best part. It’s two weeks later and I have hardly had to shave my underarms at all. Usually, they estimate that it takes four to six sessions before you’re completely hairless in that area, but I can already see a huge difference.

Bottom line, the laser hair removal is 150% worth every penny! It really is completely pain free and you are able to “try before you buy.” I’ve recommended it to all of my friends. I’ll be visiting Pure Vanity at least every four weeks!

Sailing away at the True Rest Float Spa in Tempe … the Spa Girls review.

Imagine crawling into in a large, egg-shaped vessel and floating in salt water as you sink into a deep state of relaxation. No, you’re not in some existential dream or adrift at sea. You are at the True Rest Float Spa—an actual land destination in Tempe that buoys you with a full body massage (swim suit optional) without a therapist ever laying a hand on you.

The first time I visited the float spa, my boyfriend teased me, saying, “Just surrender to the experience.” I had no idea where he was taking me as a surprise for my birthday but he did say it “involves the body and just keep an open mind.” Of course, my mind darted to all sorts of interesting places. But after my initial float, I was quickly sold on the idea of being suspended in a tank full of water with 1,200 pounds of Epsom salt for an hour of total body weightlessness.

The float spa atmosphere is chill and low-lit, with salt lamps, a small lobby, waiting area where you can drink tea and partake in the oxygen-bar that serves flavored treatments, and all-sexes prep lounge to freshen up and dry you hair after a float. As first-timers floaters, you have to watch an educational video that among other things, teaches you that you won’t drown in the Jacuzzi-like float pod that resembles something from the set of Jurassic Park.

The individual float rooms—there are four—are ADA-equipped and include a shower with gel, shampoos and conditioner, and a personal area to store your belongings. You can bring your own towel or rent one. The door to the private suite automatically locks so privacy is not a problem. It’s highly recommended that you don’t shave the day of your float—for obvious reasons. The attendant made sure I was comfortable with the protocol and then I was left to float. Once inside the pod, I closed the lid (though you don’t have to), put in the ear plugs provided and stretched out full-body in the water, which is shin deep. And then I popped up like an inflatable boat to begin my float session.

After closing the lid, soothing instrumental music starts to play for about 10 minutes into your one-hour session. You can adjust the light on/off via a button inside the pod and if you need assistance, you can hit another button to alert the staff. Music also starts to play as you near the end of your float to signal it’s almost time to get out of the pod. During the instructional video, you’re encouraged to concentrate on breathing to help you sink (no pun intended) into relaxation. The idea behind floatation therapy is that a zero-gravity environment can help reduce strain, tension and pain—even improve sleep–so that the mind and body truly rest.

It works. Within five minutes of floating, I began to unwind and started to feel my muscles and mind loosen. While I didn’t “go under” I did find myself letting go for nearly an hour, which was followed by a tremendous amount of relief from neck and hip pain. And the slight concern I felt being claustrophobic in the pod quickly evaporated as I sailed away (though if you have an aversion to closed spaces, this might not be the place for you). I’m a big fan of massages—the kind where a therapist actually makes body contact—but I can honestly say that floating to my own devices in a sea of tranquility is just as therapeutic.
