Nestle’s Nescafe Illusory

Kahla Glasheen has been following this site each day for a couple of years now. One thing Kahla noticed is that we never featured one particular historical illusion – a poster Nestle created for their Nescafe coffee. After little research, it turns out this poster originates all the way back in 1930s. The illusion is intuitive, and in fact you should be ablre notice it quite easily. Yet the beauty and simplicity of the poster is what I really liked about it!

One thing that surprised me was your reception of our recent cinemagraph illusion. I thought you’ll be astonished, mesmerized, surprised even, yet it seems I was wrong. The difference between simple animated .gif files and cinemagraphs is not easily distinguishable. However, having more luck than taste, seems I wasn’t so wrong after all. Some of our users noticed that this “Psycho” illusion holds another well hidden easter egg inside it – a frame featuring some sort of skull-ish X-ray layer, one that isn’t so obvious.

Have to admit, I never noticed this before! It’s such a shame you didn’t react positive on cinemagraph illusions, as I had few of them lined up to be published soon. The beauty behind them should lye in the fact that only single detail gets animated, while rest of the photo stays just what it is – a still photo. Apparently it takes lots of time to create them. Check out this gallery and see if I can change your opinion ;D

Creepy Mummy Opt

About one month ago, I posted a 3D chalk drawing by Tracy Lee Stum featuring the classic Milton Bradley game of Mouse Trap. Since so many of you liked her artwork, I figured you’d enjoy getting to see another one of her 3D chalk drawings, only this time of a mummy escaping his/her tomb. I particularly like this one because the art is so cartoonish-like, yet it still looks as though it is about to burst into our world of reality. Sort of like an ancient Egyptian version of Toontown from Who Framed Roger Rabbit film. It’s one thing to make 3D art that looks like it’s about to enter our world, but when you manage to make something unrealistic blend with the reality, that becomes even more impressive. What do you guys think?

Mysterious Caves Project

Scientists have been baffled by the appearance of a mysterious cave at West India Quay, London. It is believed that a light earthquake unearthed the cave which is estimated to be over 10 million years old, but scientists cannot explain the intense glow of green lights emitting from its depths.

By now, you should have guessed that intro is nothing more than a fiction, with its sole purpose of making this optical illusion little more interesting. What you see below is a 3D Chalk Drawing, created by world-class pavement artist Edgar Müller, whose works we posted on many occasions before. If you remember Ice Age chalk drawing, or maybe that Lava Burst optical illusion – Edgar was responsible for both! His newest creation was exhibited on West India Quay’s Festival in London. It’s hard to imagine you could easily walk over this huge cave, and that concrete pavement is still lying beneath. It took 5 days for Edgar to finish this project. Below is the “Behind the Scenes” gallery, where you can see the work in progress.

Japanese Gardens No Ordinary Gardens

When we talk about the finest gardens in the world, Japanese gardens top the list. They are no ordinary gardens, having rocks, water, a teahouse, pavilion and of course, a lantern made of stone just makes one imagine of paradise. Among these elements, stones are considered to be very important in Japanese gardens, they are the first thing which one notices placed in the garden attracting the eyes.

You can find stones used in several different ways in a Japanese garden. They are used in making of the walking path in the garden or placed randomly giving a funky look. Representing the emotions of strength and endurance, stones can be found placed as if they are naturally there for ages. They are also found nicely located in the bottom of waterfalls.

After this the second major thing one will notice is the symbol of purity, water. You would not find too many fountains in a Japanese garden, as they are not natural. Besides fountains, you can see fantastic waterfalls, streams or ponds allowing the water to flow naturally and giving the viewer a boost of refreshment.

Yin and Yang are very familiar names in Japanese culture as they represent the female and male elements of water and fire. You will commonly find a stone lantern placed near a stream or a pond may be, in the respect of these elements.

You would also find a lot of shrubs and flowers around, which give the feel of the changing seasons in a Japanese garden. Surrounding them will be trees, mostly of Japanese maple or Japanese Black Pine. Magnolia trees, Bamboo, Moss and trees like Azaleas can be scene around the pavilion or the teahouse giving a nice and fresh atmosphere.

Pond and island style, the dry landscape Zen garden, stroll gardens or courtyard gardens are a few of different Japanese gardens found commonly. A Japanese tea garden is a popular one having a teahouse and stone walk path across the garden. A nice waterfall could be seen along with different various plants. If you would like to see pond, island and bridges then Pond and island style Japanese garden is waiting for you. If you have a simple taste and want some decency then you might want to visit one of the small courtyard Japanese gardens.

None or the less, all these Japanese gardens are just beyond magnificent and the visitor unconditionally returns for another look.

Not even James Bond would scoff at the beautiful Hyper-Sub. After all, how could he not want to step foot onto a $3.5 million submersible powerboat? This craft designed by Marion HSPD, will finally be heading to the production line. Of course $3.5 million may be a tough price tag to cope with, but you’re getting a rather powerful little toy in exchange.

On the powerboat side, it’s a heavy-duty, 31-ft. surface-cruiser with an enclosed cabin. Powered by twin 440 hp inboard diesels for a total output of 880 hp, the Hyper-Sub has a maximum surface speed of 40 knots and a maximum surface range of 500 miles. In dive mode the Hyper-Sub can plunge up to 250 feet, and offers umbilical SCUBA support.

4. Yellow Submarine

This is another personal submarine, and it is yellow. Unfortunately, it is not big enough so we all can live in it, as it only seats two people with upright seating. It is good for going 1,000 feet under the water, and the life support is good for six hours. It also features a 120 volt and 24 volt battery bank, two 3 horsepower main thrusters, two 3 horsepower vertical thrusters, four external halogen lamps, VHF communication radio, GPS, as well as a climate controlled sphere. I’m not certain what that means, but I’m guessing you can make it very warm or very cool in there.

I don’t know how far you could go with this guy from the shore, but man, I would love to see it for myself. After all, they only cost a low price of…two million dollars? Well, I knew that this type of hobby wouldn’t be cheap.

3. EGO Compact Semi Submarine

Technically this isn’t a submarine. This is not to say that the EGO semi-submarine does not travel underwater. In fact, the cockpit is always that way. However, the upper part of the boat remains above the water all the time. This reduces the risk factor of traveling underwater, and makes it very easy to control. The company website says that “you don’t even need to know how to swim”. I say that it probably wouldn’t hurt.

The clear view gives the user a terrific view of the aquatic life, which is perfect for those who want to see fish up close without getting wet. Best of all, the EGO is eco-friendly as it is mostly electric-powered. On a 6-10 hour charge, the user is able to get about four hours worth of cruising time. The EGO semi-submarine is made by a company called RAONHAJE, and the product’s official website does not have a price. All I have to say is: “if you have to ask, then you can’t afford it”.

2. Seabreacher X

Called the Seabreacher X, this incredible shark-shaped water submersible boasts “a 260 hp supercharged engine, propelling the vessel to a top speed of 50 mph on the surface and 25 mph below.”

The Seabreacher X can sustain high speed dives and then breach the surface, launching the entire vessel clear out of the water. The new fully vectored thrust system mimic the tail articulation of real aquatic animals like sharks and dolphins. The custom tuned exhaust system also gives the vessel a more throaty growl as it tears across the surface.

1. Deep Flight Super Falcon

Marine engineer Graham Hawkes’ latest creation, Deep Flight Super Falcon is a $1.5 million battery-powered winged submarine that looks just like a plane, except it “flies” underwater.

It has a single rear-mounted propeller, looking much like an electric fan, drives the vessel, and a 48-volt lithium phosphate battery provides power. Its thick pressure hull is a carbon-epoxy mixture, and the two passengers aboard ride seated in cockpits fore and aft, observing their watery surroundings through thick Plexiglas canopies.

According to Hawkes, the craft “flies” just like a jet plane, with electric motors controlling for roll, pitch and yaw. It can fly downward at a maximum of 200 feet per minute, upward at twice that speed and keep flying for a maximum of five hours at 4 knots – about 4.6 mph. John McCosker, [California Academy of Sciences] chair of aquatic biology, said the agile submarine will enable him and his colleagues for the first time to follow along with the travels of “whales and dolphins and even super sharks – maybe even the mysterious giant squid.”

5. Wen Jian

A man in China has been growing the nails on his left hand for 14 years – to help him control his temper.

Wen Jian, 42, of Changle, Fujian province, says he was always getting into fights before he grew his nails. His longest nail is 35cm (14ins) long and prevents him from making his hand into a fist.

He is now better known for his nails than for fighting and has even opened a children’s clothes shop, called Long Nail.

But his long nails have also brought Wen some inconveniences – he has to keep his left hand in a shoe box each night to prevent him from breaking off the nails in his sleep.

4. Louise Hollis

The longest toenails record belongs to Californian Louise Hollis who has managed to grow and maintain toenails that are approximately six inches long. This is facilitated by wearing nothing but open toed shoes, something that would be possible with the mild climate in her hometown of Compton, CA. Maintenance for her toes takes a total of two days each week when all the time for filing and painting them is combined.

3. Jazz Ison Sinkfield

Jazz Ison Sinkfield, a grandmother from Atlanta, Georgia, whose fingernails are around 24 inches long. She hopes her mega-manicure will give her the opportunity to meet Oprah and other celebrities, but in the meantime, she dishes out $250 for a five-hour-long session at the salon each month to maintain her fingertips.

2. Shridhar Chillal

Shridhar Chillal (born 1938, in India) holds the world record for the longest fingernails ever reached on a single hand, measuring 6.15 meters (20 feet 2.25 inches). Chillal’s longest nail is 4.25 feet. He started growing his nails in 1952.

Although Chillal is proud of his record breaking nails, he had increasing difficulties with their weight, which already caused his left fingers to become disfigured (and more or less useless). Due to nerve damage caused from the nails’ immense weight, Chillal is permanently deaf in the left ear (for he grew his fingernails on his left hand).

He finally cut off his nails in late 2000. However, he may make the odd appearance with his finger nails in tow. He appeared with his nails attached in the movie Jackass 2.5.

Lee Redmond, a woman from Utah who has not cut her nails since 1979, had grown and carefully manicured them to reach a total length of 8.65 m (28 ft 4.5 in), and was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s longest fingernails.
