Scenarios for Windows Azure - TechEd BoF Session

What are the scenarios for moving to Windows Azure? What problems can solve Windows Azure? Real life projects that can benefit from Azure?

My friends Miguel Lopez, Marcel Meijer and I have interesting session about all those questions last week at TechEd. We came up with 9 scenarios that can benefit from Windows Azure and discuss about them with attendees. From first and obvious scalability and solving the peak problem thru publishing apps on Azure while data stays on-premises and creating a private network with Windows Azure Connect to using SQL Azure Sync for spreading your data with apps all over the globe. We talk about Azure Appliance for huge companies or governments and other things like WMRole for custom virtual machines and Azure AppFabric Cache.

Ako ste u Berlinu ovaj tjedan i uz to još i obilazite TechEd predavanja - navratite na INETA štand. Tomislav Bronzin i ja smo više manje cijeli dan uz štand pa ako ste se zaželili neengleskog možemo popričati i možda dogovoriti neslužbenu country večeru. Osim čakule posjet štandu možete iskoristiti za osvajanje Flip HD video kamere. Potrebno je dati originalnu i dobru ideju za unaprijeđenje rada korisničkih grupa ili zajednice u cjelini i to je dovoljno za ulazak u natjecanje. Microsoft je objavio WebMatrix - novo besplatno okruženje za razvoj web aplikacija

WebMatrix je besplatna kolekcija koja se sastoji od web servera (IIS Developer Express), ugrađene baze podataka (SQL Server Compact Edition 4), novoga view engine-a za ASP.NET (Razor) i samoga okruženja koji omogućuje brzi razvoj web aplikacija bilo od nule bilo od mnogih ponuđenih predložaka te sa ugrađenom podrškom za postavljanje izgrađenih web aplikacija na Internet.

XSLT is back in town

Recently I run into many articles about using XSLT in web applications. Specially regarding the ASP.NET MVC. A few years ago you could find many web applications using XSLT. The largest one I worked on was ASP app with XSLT and COM+ for getting data. The XSLT part was clean and powerfull and easy to maintainance. And then ASP.NET with the server side controls simple pushed away the usage of XSLT at least in general. And now when MVC brings us closer to HTML and when there is so many XML presented data (via OData and others) published and allready available in the Cloud (via REST) maybe the XSLT as natural XML transormation language will came back under our fingers.

Drugu godinu zaredom na WinDays konferenciji je dodijeljena nagrada za osobu koja je najviše pridonijela radu Microsoft zajednice. Ove je godine nagradu apsolutno zasluženo i jednoglasnim izborom dobio Bernardin Katić. Berni se naradio kao voditelj SQL/Dev grupe u Osijeku i pokretanjem jaaako popularne i uspješne regionalne konferencije KulenDayz a uz sve to još gostuje i kao predavač na sastancima drugih grupa. I sve to naravno volonterski i uz sve svoje ostale poslovne i privatne obaveze.

A few days ago OData (Open Data Protocol) http://www.odata.org/ site is launched. OData is a web protocol for querying and updating data appliing technologie such as HTTP, Atom Publishing Protocol (AtomPub), REST etc. Speaking of querying and updating the data over web gets me two years ago when I was talking about Astoria project at user group meetings and then I delivered a WinDays 2008 conference session about ADO.NET Data Services. What begins as project Astoria, change the name to ADO.NET Data Services now is known as WCF Data Services. All those names covers the same technology that really is HTTP/AtomPub REST way for sharing the data over web protocols.

What is connection beetween Astoria and OData and what WCF Data Services has to do with it?

Astoria and ADO.NET Services HTTP AtomPub dialect becomes a set of open extensions/conventions to AtomPub documented and were released under the OSP (Open Specification Promise) under the OData name. And simply said: in Astoria and ADO.NET Data Services messaging protokol was bound to those technologies and now has its own life while WCF Data Services are now Microsoft technology for implementing the OData protocol.

The benefit of opening the protocol as OData is collaboration with other platforms and the way it can be implemented by any platform that supports HTTP, XML and JSON. The first example is IBM Web Sphere under the list of OData producers - http://www.odata.org/producers - with Azure Tables, Sharepoint 2010 etc which could be expected.

On the consumers list - http://www.odata.org/consumers - is Excel for example and plenty of OData client libraries for different technologies: JavaScript, PHP, Java, Windows Phone 7, iPhone, .NET, Silverlight...

Seeing all gets Astoria beginings meaning and the time spended on working with it will be paid off in the future.

WinDays 2010 PnP predavanja - zajednica predlaže i bira

Nastavljamo s tradicijom slanja predavanja po izboru Communitya i s nadolazećim WinDaysima!

Specifičnost PnP predavanja je što se mogu nominirati ne samo predavanja koja biste htjeli održati, nego i predavanja i teme koja biste VI željeli čuti! Kroz konzultacije i rasprave se onda izabire predavač za kojeg se smatra da će optimalno obraditi povjerenu temu.
Predavači izabrani za PnP predavanja nastupaju pod potpuno istim uvjetima kao svi ostali predavači iz bilo kojeg drugog tracka. S obzirom da su prošli predselekciju i javnu procjenu teme, dolaze bolje pripremljeni, te zbog toga ne čudi što se Community predavači i predavanja nalaze u WinDays TOP 10 predavanja i/ili predavača.

Pozivamo i predavače koji su prošlih godina bili PnP predavači da i ove godine osmisle zanimljive teme i uđu u natjecanje s kolegama. Za razliku od Svjetskog prvenstva, ovdje ni prošlogodišnji pobjednici ni domaćini ne uživaju privilegije, nego svi dobivaju priliku :-)

Prijave traju do utorka 16.02.2010 u podne nakon čega počinje glasanje. Glasati se može (svaki član može izabrati 3 prijave) do 19.2. 2010 u 24:00 kada će biti poznati pobjednici.

Windows Azure Tools and SDK (November 2009 Release)

November 2009 Release of Windows Azure Tools - VSCloudService.exe - brings us Azure tools for VS 2008 and as a news also Azure Tools for VS 2010 Beta (and Visual Web Developer Express 2010 Beta). There is also a refreshed Windows Azure SDK in this installation. The most interesting news for me are:

more role templates (specially 2010 version)
sample storage client has been replaced by a new production quality library Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient (and Microsoft.WindowsAzure replaces Microsoft.ServiceHosting namespace)
significantly changed interface for manipulating Role configuration information with many new options
inter-role communication
input endpoints for worker roles
support for managing SSL certificates
new Diagnostics library
ability to persist data in local storage even after the role is recycled

Microsoft User Group ISTRA Poreč meeting

I participated yesterday at User Group ISTRA Poreč meeting redelivering Windows Mobile Widget session from MobilityDay 2009. Meeting was held in real open community spirit in Idila Tavern near Poreč and 20 UG members joined open discussion about Mobile technologies and Windows 7 which was second session given by Viktor Ezgeta.

I had a great time in Poreč and wish to thank UG leader Goran Mrvoš for invitation. I also recommend UG ISTRA Poreč community to other speakers. Visit them and become a part of tradition in where speakers are awarded a specialty of the house after the meeting ;-)

Mobility Day 2009 - Windows Mobile Widgets

From web developers perspective the Mobile Widgets introduced by Windows Mobile® 6.5 is faster way to dive into creating applications for mobile devices. Mobile Widgets are HTML/JavaScript applications that typically does one task very well giving user intuitive and "wow" working expirience. They act as web applications but are installed and executed outside of browser locally on mobile device. In these mesh-up days data for those applications in general would came from the Internet but because of the way Mobile Widgets are processed on mobile device widget apps could communicate with the device and work offline as well.

I will talk about the Mobile Widgets at Mobility Day 2009 (http://www.mobilityday.com/) conference presenting the basics of creating, packing and deploying Mobile Widgets applications with the entry at using Widget API and communicating with the device. The same morning Damir Dobrić will talk about Widgets and WCF (REST way, JSON, XML) so if you interested in what you can do with Mobile Widgets on Windows Mobile® 6.5 platform the best way is to attend to both sessions ;-)
