Why Bangladesh is a more expensive country than you think?

I am no expert in Economics, neither I have a vast knowledge of money and Finance. But I was lucky to be able to be outside of Bangladesh for a while and compare the pricing 1st hand over the last few years. Is it only me who feels Bangladesh is expensive when it comes to buying consumer products and goods? I’ll leave it to you guys to decide. But here, I’ve tried to depict few of my thoughts about why this is a true claim even if numerous research and papers will say Bangladesh is one of the 10 cheapest countries to live (even if you consider only Dhaka).

Thought 1: Discriminatory living standard

Bangladesh has one of the most discriminatory living standards in the world. The rich and their reach both lives far beyond the average person’s buying power. Most of the niche marketplaces are targeting the rich as their customer only because it’s going to be an easy sell. High priced brands are everywhere in the world. But these will stay within few industries like real estate, automotive and personal toiletries and few more. But in Bangladesh, there are even Deshi sweet-shop Brands targeted towards the affluent society! Most of the marketplace are divided into 2 when it comes to their target customers. It’s very rare that a rich and a poor guy would go into the same shopping mall for shopping, would go to the same cinema or would use the same medium as their primary transport. There will always be a tendency to avoid each other and the conspiracy to stop them accessing the same place is very much evident. I could give you hundreds of example but I feel only few will help you find out the rest. You’ll not generally find someone with high-income travelling in a public transport as the service doesn’t satisfy their demand at all. On the other hand, it will be quite unimaginable that a poor person will be visiting a super store every day for their household groceries. 

In a developed world scenario, no matter what is someone’s income should find a public transport comfortable and should be able to visit a super store every now and then. This social discrimination is taking high toil from the middle-class society of Bangladesh. Foreign visitors are also a niche who are victims but not the usual expats though (They already know where they are supposed to do the shopping from). We being foreign residents find that you’ll have to pay an extra premium for every sort of day to day products or services because they are mostly targeted to be sold only to the rich customers. You can’t eat food from the street or rent a room in a cheap hostel because the hygiene rating would not match your expectation. ‘livable’ Youth hostel is still at its concept stage over here. You’ll be sold foods in the restaurants at a higher price just because they are ‘’safe to eat’’. In Bangladesh, Riding a public bus will be so risky that You are only limited to high priced car rentals even if you’re trying to go from Point A to point B because there is not enough Taxi when you need them. I have not yet found a taxi rank or universal taxi calling number that works. This way, your travelling cost for a single journey in Bangladesh will exceed the cost of travelling to cities like New York, London or Tokyo.  

Thought 2: Lack of knowledge of International pricing

As a developing nation with relatively low knowledge of western pricing standard we tend to run after new stuff and without knowing their actual average price, we buy into them very easily. All the new people coming to food and hospitality business have been taking the advantage of this. I was checking the Price for a Latte in George’s Cafe which can be compared to any Costa in the UK or Starbucks available worldwide. But to be frank with you, I’d pop in a Subway any morning and get a better latte than George Cafe for even 20% cheaper price. On their TripAdvisor page, Few Bangladeshis have reviewed them as well priced but one New Yorker Bangladeshi found it to be overpriced which doesn’t surprise me at all.

I would love to do the big mac price test for Bangladesh. But as there’s still no McDonalds available in Bangladesh, I’ll do the Hot zinger Burger Meal price index. In the US the price is 4.44$, in the UK it’s about 5.5$, in India it’s about 2.52$ and in Bangladesh, the price in KFCBD listed at 5.55$ but if you order it through FOODbangla.com they will charge you a whopping 8.8$ for the delivery(service charge may be added). My personal experience says, both Pizza hut and Nandos Prices are almost same in both BD and UK. If you consider the property renting and employee salaries, these International brand Franchise owners are pocketing the highest share of profits compared to any country in the world. 

Thought 3: No Economies of scale. NO real “SALE’’

OK, this is the only time I’ll be using a term found in economics books. As Bangladesh is a very densely populated country, any good or product has a very amount of demand. Because of high demands, a 2,500 sqft.  apartment can cost roughly about 380,000$ in the upmarket areas of Dhaka city. For the same price, you can get the same size villa with pool in Larnaka city, Cyprus which happens to be an EU country. If the production cost is low and demands are good, the prices should also be low because there is not much risk involved. During the high demand months of the year like in summer and Christmas, most of the countries tend to offer ‘’sale’’ and compensate low profit with a high amount of sell. Even I’ve found ‘sale’ on dates in the month of Ramadan but the scenario will be totally different in Bangladesh. Price hikes are very common during Eid eves and other festivals. There is no history of price reduction for high demand goods in the Bangladesh ever.

Reduced price for low shelf life products are also a far cay in Bangladesh. Whereas, a UK household has reported 30% savings over a year just buying reduced priced items from Grocery store a few days ago. Low priced store branded products like Tesco cola or Walmart crisps are a concept yet to be introduced in Bangladesh. I’ve bought a 25£ pant/trouser from a renowned brand called Marks & Spencer which is ‘’Made in Bangladesh’’ just for 3£ during a Sale which I bet none would even be able to buy even if they go to BongoBazar. 

Though 4: High number of Middle Man channels and distributors

Bangladesh is not considered as a very important market by most of the giant companies like Apple or Hp. All the electronics Item you will be buying in Bangladesh has been imported by various distributors in legal or Illegal ways. during this process an iPhone will cost you the production cost + Apples profit + local distributor Import cost + local distributor profit( to run their store in Bashundhara city). Where as if there was an apple store you would just pay the apple price and would get the world class after sales support as well. There is numerous online store who are importing cheap items like selfie sticks, USB thumb drives, phone covers form China and selling at 200% - 300% profit margin. There is no way you can go to an international marketplace like Aliexpress yet and get it delivered to your doorstep at the manufacturer price. The more remote place you’ll be living, the more there will be added distributors and hence the more markup on the actual price. 

Final Thought:

I had no intention of attacking any individual or business during this write-up. As a Bangladeshi, I’ve felt being ripped off in various cases during my visits to Bangladesh and I’ve tried to abstain from buying consumer products as less as possible. I have high hopes that the day is not far away when:

More and more business will target both rich and poor at the same price bracket.
The business will be fair, highly efficient in logistics and distribution.
Consumers will have rights to return the product and get refunds if they are not satisfied.
Postage deliveries will gain more popularity to keep the eCommerce business alive.

What I got out of the Ravensbourne App making Short Course ?

In my previous post, I've mentioned, I joined the Ravensbourne Intro to app making course which is run by 2 very friendly and nice instructor Matteo and Aimee. Its a 6 week (every Saturday for 4 hours) course where I was able to sharpen my HTML and CSS skills and was introduced to Programming in jQurey and cloud based backend database like Firebase!

I took the advantage of using the macbook provided during the course everyday. We used mozilla thimble IDE to type and paste our codes and view the results instantly on the web. The instructors tried to engage us with the lectures as much as possible with quizes and role-plays. Matteo was a code veteran and prime tutor; Aimee helped as the jargon buster which proved to be a nice combination of teaching.

By the end of 4th week, our front end was ready and we were introduced to Firebase as the backend to pull our data from. It has been an awesome experience to explore the power of jQuery, javascript and Firebase when combined.

On 5th week, we started working on our own Project. I tweaked my app to show a list of Countries ranked based on 5 criteria. The user can Also list their country and score it. Based on the high scores, it will show up on the list which is best for i.e. education or stability.

When we hit the 6th week, our apps were fully working we came out of the thimble shell and moved onto github as the hosting platform. the instructors shared a lot of resources, inspirations and tips for us to move on. I've decided move forward to explore more about Javascript, Github, Firebase and command-line.

I'd say, the course was an eye opener for me as a new-bee in the web development arena, where I actually got to build something dynamic and get a confidence boost on my self-taught journey of coding. Webapps are more clear to me, and I know the basic pipeline for deploying a data-push-pull based webapps now. The course was priced at 94£ which is even lower for Greenwich residents.

Why I am Learning to code?

I was looking for a suitable image for my post and I found the one on top. Even 10 days ago, I wouldn't understand anything about the code and hence the joke would just make no sense to me. Now i actually know its a do/while loop written in javasrcipt. I've just started to learn programming with the available resource around me at the age of 25. I am not saying, I am too old but I sometimes miss coding in my teen age.

I believed I was destined to study Computer Science until I miserably failed in my Higher Secondary School to achieve good grades in science subjects. I knew no public university would allow me to study Engineering let alone computer Engineering. So I stepped back and opted for a different education. I went to study Business Administration in an University 327km far away from home. I thought I would do great in Marketing or Branding and Advertising. And suddenly in 2013, I got a call form my dad living in UK that I was going to join him in few days. I flew leaving my graduation uncompleted just for a semester.

In 2014, I was living in UK for about a year and was working for Pizza Hut trying to figure out what am I doing in the kitchen cleaning all the stuff. I would be doing at least something better maybe, If I was in Bangladesh. I tried to get into Sales, Advertising and learn digital Marketing. Even I managed to get a job in a tech startup as a customer support guy but probably that might not exactly be me. But while working for FOODit I amazingly realize the power of coding. Suddenly I started gazing at the devs I worked with. They were building cool stuff. I was for a certain period a part of the team who came up with centraldish.

After leaving FoodIt 2 months ago, The 1st thing I wanted to do is learn coding. Not just because coding can make you earn 2 times more than a customer support guy but also it gives you the power to create something great. Something that might solve at least one problem that humanity is facing at this moment. Superheroes only shines on the silver screen but the real superheros are the people who solve silly problems for the average people.

A lot of the creative people who had great ideas in last few decades have succeeded in the tech industry. It's great to establish a company when you can build a website, app, games or anything digital that works. But the prerequisite is to know how they are build. You can't just hire someone to build something for you because soon they might take it away if you don't treat them well. Your product is only your's when you know how to build and run it weather alone or with someone else. I'd say nothing is riskier than having a nice idea and not knowing how to protect it from failing or being stolen. Also being code literate will pave the way to convey a message to your team the way they want to get directions. I think, just adding HTML, CSS, Javascript> JQuery skills would get you back to the job market and help you stand out.

I had my basic HTML sorted last year with 2 codeacademy courses. But I want to mention the Dash from general assembly was a motivation booster for me. Right now I am doing a short course with Ravensbourne in London. I am here just to check what are the best practices to teach myself how to code. Soon I'll move onto a new job but before that I want to finish my javascript lessons. The learning curve might me hard from some angle but when you know what you really want to build you'll find a way or another to make it happening.

You'll get there... It's never late to start over.

What Bangladeshi tech startups are missing out by not hitting the global market?

I’ve been following the trends in the Bangladeshi Startup culture via social media and sites like SD Asia and so on. In my following, few years ago, Freelancing individuals used to operate as a team and got most of their tasks as a contract from the foreign providers via platforms like Odesk(now Upwork), elance, freelancer and so on. There are still lot of people out their who takes and does work from upwork and making a decent and happy living. The scene started to change a little bit since 3-4 years years ago and I’ve found a list of startups from ‘Founded in’ who truly have products of their own and they are mostly focusing local customers based in Bangladesh. I see that as a step forward made possible by the new and young techpreneurs of Bangladesh. Some of them have got fame and media coverage but most of them are not making good enough money even though they’ve amazing services and products.
If you look back at the very small history of Bangladesh in IT industries, we grew up using or downloading pirated software and copied digital contents and still are doing it. A whole generation have passed the message to the next generation that, we are not going to pay for digital downloads, softwares or any kind of services unless we must. its going to be very hard to sell softwares as services to this generation and the next. To avoid the risk of being a failed srartup, its best for the entrepreneurs to redesign their product to serve the global consumer as most of the tech services can be provided globally. There are markets for subscription based services and secured online payments are there to cash you back. Indian tech startups has got this very clear message across the board long ago and some of the Indian companies are already selling their services abroad. We use Freshdesk as the customer support ticketing system in our office which is a SAS mostly provided and operated from India.

Is it really hard to hit the global Market?

Bangladeshi professionals from New York, California, Sydney and London have been waiting to see some initiatives from the Bangladeshi startups and the response have not been good enough so far. Some of the very risk prone entrepreneurial Non resident Bangladeshis have come back to their homeland to take few businesses globally and they are undoubtedly the heroes of Bangladeshi startup scene. Depending on the service, if its not very much localized; it has never been easier than now to go global. All you need to do is to be found! that’s it...

When business and individuals search for services online, all they look for is local pricing and local contact numbers. Nobody check and judge a SAS service by the provider country. Once you’ve optimized your site targeting the western world, you need to localize your site more and more. It could be through UX, could be through supporting customers in English during Local time. You can pay for customer’s local numbers and those calls will be transferred to you. Only Skype won’t give you enough exposure. If you can think of foreign business subsidiaries and hire people, that will also bring you new customers.

Some products need to be optimized locally based on their culture, weather condition and using of colloquial language is highly required specially in the content marketing industry. Hire people who are enthusiastic about foreign cultures; who not only listen to kanye west but also knows why people drive on the right hand side in USA. If you’re still trying to figure out what you’re missing from your business by not going global yet is; simply the profit you could make from actual sales to millions of legitimate customers.

My First Shortfilm: The Mind Reader

The idea came into my mind in november 2014 when I just had finished my VFX course in Ravensbourne UK. I decided to make a short-film using some simple motion tracking involved. The motivation was the nickelback music video ''savin' me'' where someone gets the power to read some texts over head. My film story demanded that the lead role will be able to see what's going on in someone's mind on real time. I had to put those on Bangla language because they would probably think in Bangla anyway. The shooting was done at a stretch for few hours on a single day. All the post production was done with corel videostudio Pro 7 at my place. I only used the motion tracker built-in video studio. Sounds were taken from various movie OSTs by Hans Zimmer and Daft punk. I gave it the 8mm film look with Youtube filter. I've plans to come up with few more sequels & hopefully you will enjoy the movie.

Mobile Photography: 5 Tips for doing it the Cheap & Right way!

If you've viewed these pictures you might wonder that, these pictures were taken with very low cost 5 mega-pixel cameraphones. For better view & camera details, you can go here. A lot of people believe mobile photography has to be done with flagship phones like Iphone or Galaxy S series phones. But how come they can help you be a mobile photographer when they themselve cost around the same of an entry level DSLR. If you can't afford a DSLR, How would you buy a high end smart phone?

There are so many people who don't want to print their photos anyway. So, If you are thinking of posting photos online (i.e. facebook or Instagram) you simply don't need a phone that capture pictures at more than 5 mega pixels. I started mobile photography since i've been using android smart phones. These days even cheap phones produce quite good pictures.

After viewing and experimenting with camera phones i've found the Lumia 520 from Nokia takes the best photos at the cheapest price price point till now. To get more dynamic effects from your photos you can use few apps like Nokia Refocus, Nokia Smart Cam and Nokia Cenemagraph. For editing the Color and adding filter Fotor is the best app for windows phone 8.

If you're not into windows phone anyway, Get the Moto G from Motorola. The camera is decent and it's a mini power house for everyday multitasking. Even the new Moto E should be taking the same quality photos like the older brother. Picsart is one of the best apps for post-processing and adding filter. Apps like Google Camera are only available for Android Kit-kat 4.4 and above, so going for a cheap smart phone from Samsung or Sony will be a great mistake unless they run the stock Android Kit-kat 4.4.

Now you've chosen your best budged cameraphone; you've to know few tricks of doing it the right way. These tips are from my personal experience:

1. Know your camera: knowing every features that you're camera phone can offer is a must. Play with it for few hours taking test shots after you've your hands on it. Certainly, its not the best camera out there, so you've to know your limits and push it hard to get what you want from it.

2. Check the light: Camera phones neither can handle too much light nor too less light because of low dynamic range. So pick a time to shoot when there's not much harsh light in outdoors. Afternoons and evenings are the best time to get beautiful colours on your phone cameras. Try to use artificial lights when shooting indoors to get sharper Image.

3. Use stabilisers: As you don't have much control on the shutter speed and the lens itself is not fast; to get the best output, use any kind of stabilisers like mini tripod. It'll give you stability, reduce shake in poor lighting conditions and will enable you for a lot of creative shots.

4. Use dedicated apps: Apps are the best weapons that lets you getting the best output from your camera and create a 'stand out' shot. If you don't use a camera or editing app, it's more likely that you'll end up with a dull looking shot and won't be eye shooting.

5. Know your shot: Finally, if you're thinking of taking all type shots with this cheap equipment, you're making a mistake. Camera phones are only suitable for street shots, close-ups & portraits to some extend but they are not capable of taking zoom shots; not even for dynamic landscapes. The small sensor won't let you have the details from far away objects. Unless you can capture something interesting, people will lose the interest to look at your work at the first glance.

Ditched my DSLR: Why Did I do it?

My Cameras as of 2014

DSLRs are fun, take crisp photos and are always the best way to capture what you want to display. I am not writing for the poople who want to take photography as a profession. Even I ain't suggesting anyone or else I would give the title, ''why You should ditch your DSLR?''. I just found my way a bit cooler and easier to take photographs of the things and people I love around myself.

I've used DSLRs form Canon and Nikon before. I was carrying a bulky chunk of piece everywhere I thought I might find something interesting. There's been a lot of days, I didn't feel like shooting or didn't find anything even if I was carrying my Camera with me. Regarding the situation there were so many days, I was forced not to carry it but I actually found something interesting and I yelled on myself, why don't I have my camera with me today? When you shoot for you'r own happiness out of only passion for photographing, you can become more relaxed about what do you want to capture and when do you want to do it. As long I am not working for a client who pays me to do the job, I am free from meeting someone else's requirements. That's why I don't claim myself a photographer rather I prefer to tag myself as a photography hobbiest. But there's this thing inside me that makes me desperate to capture when I find something really capture-worthy. I needed cameras that I can always carry becuase I never know, when I'll be facing the magic moment. That's my style, being ready all the time!

Last year, I started reseraching on the output samples of compact cameras from Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic & Samsung. It's not that hard to Imagine that, there are lot of people like me around and the manufacturers are actually thinking of us deeply. Now, we've a lot of compact system cameras which can take Good quality photos like an entry lever DSLRs. First I wanted to try some Old models which was bit cheap as 2ndhand on ebay. Obviously, I didn't want to spend my hard earned money on something that I don't want to earn anyting from.

My first Pick was a 90£ Samsung NX100 released in 2010. It has a decen't crop sensor which is exactly the size of a crop sensor DSLR. But since its arrival, I still don't think its pockatable anyway even if its half thin than the smallest DSLR. Few Days later, I got my hands on a 70£ Lumix DMC-LX3. Even though its from 2008, for the first time In my life I was happy to carry a camera with me. The output was better than any of the bridge cameras I've had from fuji and Canon. The latest Lumix DMC-LX7 should provide much better quality photos than this for sure. If I was ready to Spend more, I would definitely go for a Fujifilm X100s or Sony RX100 ii. These seems to be few of the best cameras as of today that you can use for day-to-day shoots and take anywhre in your pocket.

There's a new trend of Using Gopro for a variety of wide angle, underwater, sports photography/videography and Timelapse these days. I needed this for experiemts and after a bit of reseach I went for SJ4000 Novatek worth 70£ which is kind of a copy of Gopro Hero 3 but with a Display on the back. Though I was able to save 60% of the cost not buying the Gopro but the outputs aren't much good as I would have from a gopro. Even though, I now have the power to take pictures of the same angle as if I had a 11-12mm lens on a crop sensor DSLR.

You'd probably think if I am so lazy to carry a DSLR, why don't I stick to a Mobile phone instead! You're actually right, the camera I always carry is my cameraphone. I don't have a Lumia 1020/ Xperia Z2/ Iphone 5s/ Galaxy s5; not even the Nexus 5! I simply use the 130£ Moto G for most of my photos these days. I love it and it serves my purpose for Instagram. Though I've been planning for a Lumia 1020, but I am still not ready for going to windows platform on my phone.

I've mentioned the price so that you can calculate now. Below 400£ I've managed to make my gears able to shoot almost anything I like to (Sorry I don't like wildlife photography)! As the Picture qualities are not that professional quality or I don't have much options available while shooting, I've to spend a lot of time editing them on Photoshop lightroom or on Picsart to get the output I wanted. But I don't mind doing it as I've always edited my photos even if they were taken with a DSLR.

DeshiTube: Aiming to be the hub of Youtubing from Bangladesh

দেশিTube or DeshiTube is a concept Youtube Channel run by Me as of now. After being in UK for more than a year, I realised Youtube is the place where I spend of my time while I'm online. In the near future, this is going to be the same with a lot of Bangladeshis living in Bangladesh. Soon they will have access to super fast Internet connection which is quite essential for running Youtube without Buffering at 720p or 1080p.

But I also realised there are still not much good content available made by Bangladeshis on youtube so far. Except for some of the Drama and movies produced for TV, there's no such regular show based youtube channel run by any Bangladeshi. I loved the videos of salmonthebrownfish, he might actually be the pioneer of Bangladeshi Youtubing. But still, this is not enough! We need a lot of regular show uploading channels and people who are interested in this business.

DeshiTube, which aims to be the 1st full featured Bangladeshi Youtube channel can work as a hub for the show makers, who can't yet earn through Youtube Monetization because of regional policy of Youtube. Now, I am working to increase the subscribers by creating quality content. The Project What Do you Miss about Bangladesh ?? was a part of this initiative. People form 6 countries participated for this documentary and it got over a 1000 view on the 1st day of uploading. The production quality might not have been the best, but it showed the world that we can actually be united online and work together even being in different countries.

I am looking for people who want to contribute any kind of quality content (This may be short-films, Documentaries, Vlog, Discussions, comedy shows) for this channel and gain more view than uploading from separate channels. Working under a brand name might bring success faster once we have a lot of subscribers. Paid local ads inside the videos can also be included later when we've enough view records. DeshiTube plans to upload at least one show everyday and run a lot of regular shows like you see in traditional TV channels. So if you are Interested, gim'me a buzz. Lets work for this!

Mobile Photography: Google camera takes it one step further!

Mobile photography has been the new trend of this modern era. With the advancement of camera and editing apps, It's getting more view worthy and professional looking everyday. Camera phones are easy to carry, pocketable and it lets you to be ready all the time on the go. All you need is, your eye of detail and fast response to the moment taking place before your eyes.

Google camera app is the new standard app for mobile photography on android phones which run on Kit-Kat 4.4 and later. The most interesting feature to this is the New lens blur option. It lets you take DSLR like shallow depth of field or bokhe effect photos enabling you to separate the background more from your foreground.
