Samson Design developed the Friji Fan, a portable oscillating fan for BestMed. Commercializing the client’s new, ultrafine misting technology into a home product, Samson Design created a space saving energy fan that can be used indoors or out. While the Friji Fan can cool a room 15°, it only uses the power of a 100-watt bulb. The consumer benefits from an environmentally friendly fan that is mess free – no drip pans, hoses, or large filter pads.

Samson Design president Jeff Samson has been named a Senior Fellow at the DaVinci Institute.

"Launched in 1997 as a non-profit futurist think tank, the Institute has emerged as a center of visionary thought, attracting both a national and international following of idea junkies and business leaders alike."

"Unlike Leonardo DaVinci, the Institute set its sights on producing tangible results as opposed to conceptual thinking.... Droplet Measurement 's PAX stands out with GUI by Samson Design

Samson Design designed the layout and graphics for the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of Droplet Measurement’s Photoacoustic Extinctiometer (PAX). PAX is a sensitive, high-resolution, fast-response instrument for measuring aerosol optical properties relevant for climate change and carbon particle sensing precision scientific equipment. Samson Design analyzed the way technicians used this instrument and the findings indicated that the user needed a clean interface with a simple navigation architecture and an ability to represent critical information clearly on this 7" touchscreen display.

Ice Energy continues Success Story with $24 Million

Ice Energy is a leader in specialized thermal energy storage products that capitalize on the arbitrage of energy at on- and off-peak rates. Specifically, Ice Energy’s technology shifts as much as 40% of peak energy demand to off-peak hours by creating and storing energy at night when energy is cheaper. Ice Bear, the company’s main product designed by Samson Design, works in connection with existing air conditioning units. It is compatible with about 85% of commercial units. It has two modes: ice cooling and charging. In 2010, Ice Energy announced an infusion of $24 million to support the deployment of utility-scale distributed energy storage products and a 53-megawatt project in California.

Conmed approached Samson Design to create a compelling product based upon their existing technology that solved problems and involved inexpensive manufacturing. The result was a thermoformed enclosure with improved human factors and a distinctive aesthetic.

Here's a quick look at the design process for a compressor housing. Early concepts captured the dual quick connects and explored dynamic volumes.

Later concepts added color and detail images.

The selected concept was built in SolidWorks and then rendered for final approval. The parts were rapid prototyped for a trade show, minor changes were made based on feedback, and then the tools were cut for production parts

As part of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Western District Conference, Samson Design industrial designers Doug Zaugg and James Osburn were invited to present a Sketching workshop with Crocs designer Cheng Kue. As part of the conference theme, "Make a Scene", they sketched concepts for personal transportation of the future. The audience was invited to sketch along and they came up with some great concepts.

The Ice Bear 30 Hybrid Air Conditioner won an Excellence in Design Award in the category of Major Appliances. Read about it at appliancedesign.com. The product was designed by Ice Energy and Samson Design.

"Designed to work with existing small and mid-sized HVAC systems, the Ice Bear freezes water to store cooling energy at night when electricity generation is cleaner and less expensive."

This unit was also a finalist for the Platts Global Energy Award as the "Sustainable Technology Innovation of the Year"
