As the San Carlos School District prepares to implement the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010, the Governor’s recently released budget proposal recommends eliminating funding for the Transitional Kindergarten program. If the Governor’s budget is approved by the legislature, school districts would not be required to offer a Transitional Kindergarten. While the district has begun planning for the TK, without state funding it may not be possible to implement the program for the 2012-13 school year. It is likely that we will not know for sure until May, whether a TK program will be offered in the SCSD next year. The district will continue to keep the community updated on the status of the Transitional Kindergarten while at the same time exploring possible options for children who may be affected by this possible cut in funding.

San Carlos School District Appoints Open Seats to Governing Board

Carol Elliott and Kathleen Farley to be sworn in at January 18 meeting

SAN CARLOS, CA – January 13, 2012 – At its meeting last night, The Governing Board of the San Carlos School District appointed Carol Elliott and Kathleen Farley as new Governing Board members to fill seats vacated by former school board trustees Mark Olbert and Carrie Du Bois, both of whom were elected to different positions in the November election. Ms. Elliott and Ms. Farley will each serve the remainder of Olbert’s and DuBois’s terms (until November of 2013).

On December 8th, the School Board unanimously voted to pursue an appointment process for the two vacant seats rather than call for a special election, which would have cost the District up to $60,000 and would have left two seats vacant until June of 2012. At that meeting, the Board set a deadline of January 9, 2012 for interested candidates to complete an application. Seven applications were submitted, which included background information and candidates’ answers to a number of questions.

At last night’s board meeting, each of the seven candidates was given a chance to speak about his/her candidacy and then was asked to answer two randomly drawn questions. After all candidates had spoken and answered questions, the Board deliberated in the public meeting. At the end of the deliberation, the Board unanimously voted to appoint Elliott and Farley.

Seth Rosenblatt, President of the San Carlos School Board, remarked, “We are thrilled to have Carol and Kathleen on the Board. They will both make great contributions to our governance team, and I’m excited to have a full board so we can proceed with all of the important and exciting work of the district.” Ms. Elliott and Ms. Farley will be sworn in at the beginning of the next regularly scheduled San Carlos School Board Meeting on January 18th.

“I was pleased by the number of high quality candidates that applied for the position; it was very difficult for the Board to narrow it down to just two,” said Dr. Craig Baker, Superintendent of the San Carlos School District.

To the San Carlos School District Community,

As most of you probably know, we had a local election this past Tuesday. Although the results are not official until they are certified by the County Elections Office (which will occur on or before December 6th), it looks likely that one or two current sitting school board members — Carrie Du Bois and Mark Olbert — will be leaving the Board before their terms end. This is because the law prevents individuals from simultaneously holding two elected offices, and automatically resigns them from their previous office.

The remaining members of the Board will need to choose a process to replace any open positions. By law, the Board must choose to either appoint new members or hold a special election. At our December 8th meeting, the Board — which will not include any former trustees who resigned due to being elected to another office — will discuss which path they want to go down. We encourage all community members to attend that meeting to understand the next steps as well as to give public input into the process. You can also share your thoughts by calling me at 508-7333, or by emailing me (cbaker@sancarlos.k12.ca.us) or the Board (board@sancarlos.k12.ca.us).

Assuming that there is at least one opening to fill, I am hopeful that a number of interested and committed community members will step forward to serve as School Board Trustee. If you have any interest in serving, I encourage you to learn more. Please feel free to reach out to me or any Trustee to learn what is involved in becoming a member of the San Carlos School District School Board.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions.

Regards,

Craig Baker, Ed.D
Superintendent

On Thursday October 20th, San Carlos School District will be participating the California ShakeOut, a state-wide earthquake preparedness drill. Your students will practice the Drop, Cover, and Hold On earthquake response technique. Federal, state, and local emergency management experts and other official preparedness organizations all agree that “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” is the appropriate action to reduce injury and death during earthquakes. The California ShakeOut is our opportunity to practice how to protect ourselves during earthquakes. This is a timely reminder for families to restock emergency kits and first aid kits, and practice emergency procedures in your own households.
