Ruling on Summary Judgement Expected today in Dio San Diego vs. St Annes and Holy Trinity

Prayer request: A ruling is expected to be announced today here in San Diego (Friday, 6th) regarding a judge's decision granting or denying summary judgement in two joined property cases. Plaintiffs are The Episcopal Church of the United States and the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego.

Congregations affected by this ruling are St. Anne's Anglican Church, Oceanside and Holy Trinity Parish, Ocean Beach (my church home), both located here in San Diego. The decision will affect the ministries of at least 5 clergy and approximately 400 active parishioners.

A victory today (summary judgement dismissed) for the congregations means the cases proceed to trial court date in December of this year. A loss (summary judgement granted) means cases closed without dispute, barring further appeal.

Be in prayer for the lawyers who will be in court today arguing for the congregations. Following the California Supreme Court's ruling against St. James Newport Beach earlier this year, it promises be an uphill battle, whatever the actual merits of our case.

Followup announcement(s) expected this afternoon.

Bp. Schofield to Inaugurate New Anglican Religious Society in San Diego

IHS
New Society Forming

Dear Christian Brothers and Sisters,

There is a vision being birthed at the Anglican Church of the Resurrection (“ACR”) in San Marcos, California! Read on. A new Community (Society) is arising in your midst. This is to invite Christians to consider becoming a part of it . . . as the Lord leads. The Society (Community) forming will be a group of persons who especially intend to walk in the joy of serving our Servant King, the Lord Jesus Christ. Our coming together will be for the express purpose of mutual encouragement and accountability with a special focus on growth in Christ through serving. The life of the Society will include a formal commitment to prayer (including some form of the Divine Offices) as well as spiritual reading. As mentioned, our mandate will include availability to serve others as God leads. We anticipate that there would be a meeting of the Society once or twice a month.

On January 3, 2010 Bishop John-David Schofield who, with the Rev. Dr. Eric Menees, Senior Pastor at ACR, has given his blessing to the formation of this Society, will formally inaugurate the Society and hear the promises of those who wish to belong to it. The previous day, January 2, 2010, Bishop Schofield will lead a Quiet Day at ACR (open to all) on the subject of "Intercessory Prayer." Those intending to become part of the Society will see this Quiet Day as an opportunity for preparation for their commitment. All of this will take place at ACR. Stay tuned for more details!

So . . . this is a call to Christians who might feel the tug of the Lord Jesus Christ to join in this opportunity. If you are interested, please join us to learn more and to discuss/pray for the discernment of God's will in this matter. God willing, we will meet together for this purpose on Monday evening, November 16, 2009 at 7:00 P.M. in our home at 952 Knoll Vista Dr., Lake San Marcos, CA 92078. Please RSVP, if you can, however just showing up would be fine.

Sincerely in Christ,
Chief Rabbi: Europe is Dying of Selfishness and Secularism

There will be more voices joining Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks soon, decrying the suicidal exchange of Europe's fertility for the sterility of secularism and hedonism. He happens to be one of the earlier voices but he won't be the last. I predict the chorus will swell based on my informal conversations with otherwise liberal-minded European colleagues who are starting to wake up and smell the espresso of a continent burgeoning with the children of fundamentalist Muslims. "How did we get here?" they are asking. The time is ripe for evangelism.

What surprises me is that nobody is really all that worried about the state of things here in the U.S.of A. Our birthrates are kept just slightly positive (2.1 per female) by the influx of Hispanic and African immigration, so we sit comfortably in a sustainable population range. Your white western female here in the States, however, is reproducing at unsustainable levels (1.6 or so), largely for the same reasons the Rabbi outlines below.

This isn't about whether the future of the western world should be white, black, or brown. It's about why the white cultures are killing themselves off.

Read the whole thing in the Times Online (bold emphases mine). H/T Ruth Gledhill.

In his address he said that civil society needed religion because it sanctified the family and parenthood, safeguarded against relativism and protected the moral principles on which western freedom was based.

The emphasis on consumerism and instant gratification had left little room for the sacrifice involved in parenthood, he said.

Like the people of ancient Greece, Europeans were unwilling to marry or to bring up children.

“That is where Europe is today. That is one of the unsayable truths of our time. We are undergoing the moral equivalent of climate change and no one is talking about it.”

He argued that neo-Darwinian attacks on religion – typified by Richard Dawkins’s book The God Delusion – were leading to a population crisis in Europe.

He said: “Wherever you turn today – Jewish, Christian or Muslim – the more religious the community, the larger on average are their families.

The Chief Rabbi said being a parent involved a massive sacrifice of money, attention, time and emotional energy.

He questioned where this selflessness could be found in modern Europe.

“In that culture, where will you find space for the concept of sacrifice for the sake of generations not yet born? Europe is dying, exactly as Polybius said about ancient Greece in the third pre-Christian century.”

Lord Sacks added: “Albert Camus once said, ’The only serious philosophical question is why should I not commit suicide?’.

“I think he was wrong. The only serious philosophical question is, why should I have a child? Our culture is not giving an easy answer to that question.”

Statement from Rome on Reception of Anglican Groups and Re-ordination (Editorial)

by The Rev'd Keith J Acker (Rector of Alpine Anglican Church of the Blessed Trinity, Alpine CA)

Moving toward full communion should be a desire of all Christians in seeking to live out our Lord Jesus' prayer that we "may be one." As Anglicans we maintain that we are part of the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church as it "upholds the faith and order of the undivided Church." The Statement is one we should read carefully and consider, in humility, how it challenges our Anglican understanding.

For those considering or not, we should welcome this opportunity to look at our ecclesiology and sacramental theology. We should see this as a good opportunity to have discussion as brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. The words of this Statement should encourage every Anglican to look more carefully at Holy Scripture and our understanding of the Catholic nature of the Church. My serious questions are positive challenges to us as Anglicans. For Anglicans to look at our understanding and our failures to wrestle with our Lord's calling.

1. The Statement on Personal Ordinates For Anglicans Entering the Catholic Church is a preliminary statement. We can expect more details to follow explaining the exact nature of the receiving of "former Anglicans" and the "former Anglican clergy." So my comments are preliminary. We await the publishing of the "Apostolic Constitution."

2. The Statement is creating a place within the Roman Catholic Church which will provide former Anglicans an Ordinary, a bishop of jurisdiction with pastoral oversight of congregations and clergy. Our Anglican understanding our life in Christ must be within the Body of Christ and it needs to have functional reality in the Catholic and Apostolic Church. Anglicans understand that Apostolic Succession (Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral) is a bare minimum of our being within the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. As Anglicans we have a starting place for our discussion and study.

3. The Personal Ordinariates is to provide for "former Anglicans to enter full communion with the Catholic Church." As I read this provision anyone desiring to enter full communion with the [Roman] Catholic Church can become part of the Roman Catholic Church. The nature of the reception is to become Roman Catholic. Will there be any provision NOT requiring belief that 1.) Mary was bodily assumed in to heaven; 2.) Mary was conceived without sin; and 3.) the Pope can speak infallibly on matters of faith and morals? While many Anglicans may believe some or all of these doctrines, our Catholic understanding is that they may not be required for belief as there is no certain warrant of Holy Scripture.

4. Provision is being made for "preserving elements of distinctive Anglican spiritual and liturgical patrimony." Anglicans, especially those in the United States have always held in high regard the Chicago-Lambeth Quadrilateral, and many can cite the four minimums for ecumenical discussion listed later in the document. However, the rational solemnly declared, the first four points, includes item three "that in all things of human ordering or human choice, relating to modes of worship and discipline, or to traditional customs, this Church is ready in the spirit of love and humility to forego all preferences of her own." As Anglicans we recognize our "liturgical patrimony" is secondary to Christian Faith and Order. While we love our "Anglican Rite" we are wiling to forgo these things for the sake of Christian unity. As Anglicans our goal is not to keep our Book of Common Prayer as the "right way of worship."

5. For "historic and ecumenical reasons" married men will not be ordained as bishop. The ordination as Catholic priests of married former Anglican clergy will be permitted. Except on a personal basis, the important aspect for Anglicans is not having married bishops or priests, but the re-ordination of former Anglican clergy. To Anglican laity married clergy isn't a major issue of Faith and not an obstacle standing in their way to becoming Roman Catholic. But the forthcoming Apostolic Constitution will say much to the Roman Catholic understanding of Anglican orders and the sacraments received. Here Anglicans should be challenged to look at our understanding of orders as related to the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. This was part of the challenge set forward by Metropolitan Jonah, at the inauguration of the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA), give the anomaly of women being admitted as priests in some jurisdictions. We have much to confess in our failure to articulate the Catholic understanding of Holy Orders. We are guilty of "Can't we all just get along" instead of wrestling with scripture and theology. How often I've tried to avoid what is known by most of the ACNA as the "elephant in the room."

6. Rome's "commitment to ecumenical dialogue" as a priority. The Holy See of Rome has made significant moves toward moving forward the dialogue with the Churches of Eastern Orthodoxy in recent years. This is a significant statement that dialogue with Anglicans might be included in this priority. As Anglicans we need to look at the shared "common Catholic faith" referred in the quote from Cardinal Levada. I must admit I have not seen the Catechism of reference nor discussed it with other Anglicans.

We have been given a great gift and opportunity to come to a great understanding of our place and life in the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. My thanks to Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and for the Anglicans who have sought to open doors toward the unity of the Catholic Church.

Video: Field Trip to Latin Mass with Gregorian Chant, Palestrina

Palestrina Mass for St. Anne's Patronal Feast.

We had the good fortune of an invitation from our friends to St. Anne's Parish (RC) on the occasion of their patronal feast day, 26 July 2009.

This rapidly growing church normally uses the latin mass, including Gregorian forms, and has made it its mission to become something of a center for sacred music in our region. It is to their credit that several members of San Diego's Little Brothers of the Oratory attend their regularly.

St. Anne's parish is located in Logan Heights. More information can be found at http://www.stannes-sandiego.org.

I was impressed with the choir director who, after the service let us know she was following what was happening in the American Anglican church and gave us a warm and knowing welcome as members of a local ACNA parish. This in context with some of the vocal talent that day being borrowed from St Paul's Cathedral and St. James, La Jolla.

We will be watching this congregation with some interest as they develop their music program. We serve a God of truth, beauty, and goodness, do we not?

Where Bedford Meets Canterbury

Couldn't help but snap this mobile picture yesterday on my bike ride through the Kensington neighborhood in San Diego. With all of its English street names, the neighborhood is frought with visual puns such as the road to Canterbury including one sign that said, "Canterbury under construction. Please use alternate route." Good laughs for nerdy Anglican groupies like yours truly.

Having recently returned from Bedford Texas where ACNA held its first provincial assembly, this one was just too obvious.

Time for a caption contest?

Georgette Forney on The Healthcare Bill

Some of you remember Georgette Forney of Anglicans for Life visiting us back in Dec 2007.

We've recently received this email from her, seeking your help in resisting the "silent FOCA" hidden in some of the healthcare bill being run through Washington of late.

Pick up the phone and make sure those folks we have working for us in Washington are doing the right thing.

Dear Friends for Life,

If you were to ever contact your elected officials in Washington, DC, now is the time. Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are trying to ram a national healthcare program down the throats of America that will mandate abortion. If they get their way, abortion-on-demand will be a routine part of healthcare.

The number of unborn babies dying from abortion will absolutely skyrocket, and you'll be paying for it with your tax dollars. I'm not exaggerating in the least! It will be the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade. There's also great concern that the restructuring of healthcare will result in rationing of it-especially for the disabled, elderly and those with chronic life-threatening illnesses.

Please contact your senators and member of the House of Representatives. (simply go to www.senate.gov&lthttp://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senat... and www.house.gov&lthttp://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW_by_State.shtml&gt). Demand that they oppose any government healthcare plan that doesn't specifically exclude abortion. Why do we need to have specific language in any Health Care Reform Bill?

The excerpt below from a recent LifeSiteNews.com article explains…

CNS also asked White House Press Secretary Gibbs if reducing abortions would not include passing the Hatch Amendment that would prohibit federal funds from going to abortion in Obama's proposed health care plan. Studies have shown that making abortion publicly funded significantly increases the number of abortions that are committed.

Gibbs responded, however, that Obama would be leaving the question of whether or not to fund abortion in the plan up to "experts."

Said Gibbs: "Well, I have not seen the Hatch amendment. I know the President believes that current policy -- certainly current policy for Medicaid prohibits federal funding for abortions. That's the Hyde amendment. I think when it comes to designing a benefit package, I think the President and this administration agree that that's -- a benefit package is better left toexperts in the medical field to determine how best and what procedures to cover."

The legislation currently under consideration calls for a 25-member "tHealth Benefits Advisory Committee" to construct the government's basic health insurance package. The committee members would be appointed by Obama and the strongly pro-abortion Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

These "experts" will have the power to include ABORTION in all health care coverage if they decide, and the administration is planning on giving them the freedom to make the choice.

This issue is so important, pro-life leaders and organizations have come together in a united effort called, Stop the Abortion Mandate, to sponsor a one-time webcast this Thursday, July 23rd, at 9pm EST (6pm Pacific, 7pm Mountain, 8pm Central). This free webcast will be 70 minutes long and feature leaders in the pro-life community including House Pro-Life Caucus co-chair, Congressman Chris Smith, Congressman Joe Pitts, Mike Huckabee, Tony Perkins of Family Research Council, Father Frank Pavone and many more.

Join these leaders to find out critical pro-life facts about the legislation and what you can do to help stop the abortion mandate. Go to www.stoptheabortionmandate.comt to register now!

As written, this government healthcare plan is a Silent FOCA (Freedom of Choice Act) that would undermine any laws protecting unborn babies and their mothers. Be a part of this massive, united pro-life effort to stop these Washington, DC pro-abortion politicians.

Please share this email with all your friends and family.

For His glory,

Georgette Forney,
President of Anglicans for Life

Caption Contest! Show MCJ what your'e made of, San Diego

Happy Friday

San Diego, I know you're good at this stuff, so high tail it over to MCJ where there's a proper caption contest a brewin'. So far, I haven't seen much beyond Mr. Johnson's own entries that rises to your level of creativity, so don't be shy.

Though I must admit these aren't bad...

++Rowan Williams makes decision on PB’s hat color

and this one...

Where I’m going, this IS camoflauge.

and my favorite so far, even though I'm sure San Diego will beat it.

“This has been a test of the Episcopal Vesting Service. In the case of an real bishop, you would have been given actual Christian doctrine. Remember: this is only a test.”

Go San Diego, Go!
