I recently tried out the new Rubbermaid ALL in ONE container system. I love it! There are only two sizes of lids with multiple sizes of containers. The beauty is this: you can pair any lid with almost every container. This helps to end the constant search of finding the proper lid when you are putting away leftovers. Simple and brilliant. Finally, an end to having more lids than containers or more containers than lids!

The lids come in 4 varieties and are designed for many types of storage applications. I have been a fan of the Product Saver line since they were introduced on the market. I use them for my fresh herbs, and greens. They help keep greens fresh much longer because there is a raised platform with aeration holes in the bottom to keep moisture from rotting the fragile greens. In this kit, you will receive two containers with this feature.

The premier containers are manufactured in a more stain resistant plastic and work great when storing spaghetti, enchilada sauce or other high-alkaline foods.

Last year I purchased a few of the Lock-its containers for camping. I stored meats and cheeses knowing that whatever was inside would never found it’s way out and that they would never become water logged and sink to the bottom of the cooler. They are extremely water and leak resistant with a rubber gasket type seal around all edges. I was elated to add two more of these to my collection.

The Easyfind containers are your normal Rubbermaid containers but have the added benefit that both size lids also fit all of the other containers.

I hope that Rubbermaid comes up with larger sizes, i.e. taller containers that use the same size lids. As a Professional Organizer I would appreciate the fact that the taller containers could hold a larger volume with the same footprint. This would enhance my constant quest to get the maximum efficiency from the vertical space available.

Last year I filmed an NBC News segment that offers more organizing solutions for your refrigerator. If you are interested, click here to watch.

Although the excess stuff in our homes and offices help me stay busy in business, I would like to spread to word about this video, the Story of Stuff.

If you have not watched it yet, it will open your eyes to why prices are so low these days. These low prices tempt us to buy more but this is exactly why we need to buy less.
Watch the video now.

If we spend less money buying “things”, we will have more time for family and friends.

My goal is to re-purpose all of my clients donations to charities that need those items and avoid the landfills whenever possible. Please join me in buying less and donating whatever items you no longer use instead of chucking them into the trash.

If you have a hard time letting go of possessions, consider this: when you donate to charity, your good pays forward. The charity receives your item. It sells it to others who need it but cannot afford to purchase it at retail rates. That money then turns into food and services for less fortunate people. So you see, your good turns around again and again as you release your excess.

Try it. You will feel more energized and content. It feels incredible to add space to your life!

If you file it away, you can find it someday.

“Mom, I need my birth certificate” — triggered the lost weekend. The minute my 15-year-old finished driver’s education, that paper…

“Although computers have helped cut down what we need to file, we will always have papers to deal with,” says Kathi Burns, professional organizer and paper-flow expert.
Enlarge this photo

“Although computers have helped cut down what we need to file, we will always have papers to deal with,” says Kathi Burns, professional organizer and paper-flow expert.

The simple request — “Mom, I need my birth certificate” — triggered the lost weekend. The minute my 15-year-old finished driver’s education, that paper was all that stood between her and her driver’s permit. (Please send any Valium prescriptions you’re not using.)

“Your birth certificate?” I repeat, stalling because thinking about where it might be hurts.

“As in proof I was born,” she says, her tone implying I have the IQ of a flatworm.

My brain rewinds years, to a time before car seats, tooth fairies, 2 a.m. calls to pediatricians and endless drives among Brownies, ballet and barns, and tries to recall where in the universe I stuck that little piece of paper that said I now possessed a live birth that would entangle me in more ways than I could imagine for the rest of my life.

“OK, but you have to help.”

She follows me to the garage. “My birth certificate’s in the garage?”

“It’s not personal. Mine should be in here, too. Somewhere.”

I scan the crammed garage, where the file cabinet landed on moving day five years ago, and has since been buried so deeply we need an archaeologist. “There,” I point.

“Seriously?”

Between us and a two-drawer lateral file lie two bikes, a broken lawn mower, an air compressor, a scooter, four pairs of skis, a set of crutches and a bale of hay. We unearth the cabinet to find it’s locked. “Swell,” I say, “finding Osama bin Laden would be easier than finding the key.”

“I bet other families don’t live this way.”

“I guarantee you, parents of 15-year-olds all over are going through the same thing.”

I spy a sledgehammer.

“Stand back.” I swing it like a wrecking ball into the cabinet’s locked face. It feels good. The lock smashes open. The top drawer rolls out exposing my past: long-expired insurance policies, failed investments, projects from three careers ago, unfinished novels, old résumés, and other papers I once thought important. “Taa-daa!” I pull out a dog-eared file that says “Birth Certificates” and feel something like redemption.

However, the moment forces me to face not only the awful condition of my personal records, but also of my office files. I then do what I always do when facing a domestic crisis: shop! This time I bring home an ugly, four-drawer, upright filing cabinet in vanilla metal.

In my office, I dump contents from all cupboards onto the floor, five years’ worth of resources and articles in every stage of revision and print. After a weekend of sorting and wrecking my nails, I fill four recycle bins, and feel that cleaned-out feeling you get after the stomach flu. I then realize: Unless I want to go through this again (never!), my habits must change.

I call Kathi Burns, owner of addspacetoyourlife.com and a San Diego-based paper-flow expert. I start by whining: “But filing takes so much time!”

“Not filing burns a lot more time,” she says.

“So you think I need to convert?”

“You think you should have to move a lawn mower to get to your birth certificate?”

As we talk, I learn ways to thin my files even more.

“People think when they throw something away, it negates their past. That just isn’t true,” she says, offering these filing tips:

Know your papers. Every paper falls into one of five categories: action (stuff to deal with soon), research and reference (stuff you’ll need later), agreements (insurance policies, contracts), tax-related stuff (receipts, W-2s, returns) and permanent records (birth and marriage certificates; education, medical and property records). Some people use color-coded files for each category, which seems neurotic. I divided categories by file drawer and location.

Create AAA filing systems. Active files for home and work go on your desk. Consider a small, space-saving vertical file. At Hand files of often-needed reference should be in easy reach. Archive files can go in a closet or basement.

Remove and replace. When the new versions of certain documents — insurance policies and Social Security and investment statements — arrive, toss the old.

Thin it. I’m a magazine junkie. Some I plan to read; others contain articles I’ve written. Burns lightened my life with this advice: Tear off the cover, tear out the article you want to save, toss the magazine. Wow. My magazine stack shrunk by 98 percent.

Trust technology. Old habits compelled me to keep a hard copy of stuff stored on my computer. But if you have a good backup system, you’re covered. Really.

Ask before you hoard. When tempted to save an article or brochure, ask whether you could easily find more current information online later. If so, let go.

Bust paper before it gets in. Open mail over the trash. Shred credit-card offers, pay stubs and other sensitive documents. File what matters. “Don’t shove papers in a ‘To File’ file,” says Burns. “That’s as bad as a ‘Miscellaneous’ file.”

Situation:

This jewelry collection used to live in boxes within drawers. It took all of the fun out of getting dressed and far too much time because the owner had to pry open boxes every day and search for what she needed.

Challenge:

To add to this predicament, my client is a news anchor so she has to accessorize her outfits every day. It is also very important that she keeps her accessories rotating. She does not want to wear the same items over and over again within the same month.

Solution:

Vertical, back of the door jewelry pouches! This solution was perfect because it did not take up any additional space. All of her jewelry, except the most expensive, now hangs on the back of her closet doors!

She keeps tabs on which jewelry she wears and continues down the row the next day. Her outfits are in matched rotation and tandem with her accessories and her necklaces are paired in rotation with her earrings. Getting dressed for work is now a snap for this very busy anchorwoman!

I was invited to appear on CBS 10Connects News last year as part of my Florida book tour. Here are a few tips from the news segment:

Hoarding is muck taken to the extreme. This is what I, as a Professional Organizer, have seen over the past 6 years and what has led me to write my new book How to Master Your Muck.

In my book How to Master Your Muck, this is how I address muck situations.

Like everyone else. I went through a period in my life where I had a lot of muck. Everyone has some type of muck in their life, even the most organized.

What is muck?

Anything that makes you feel stuck, unproductive or overwhelmed. Also:

Any old habits that no longer serve you

An over booked schedule

A closet that is too full to close the doors

Uncompleted projects

To help move forward it always help to let go of some of your possessions. It add space and automatically brings clarity to your situation.

How to Master Your Muck Tips for What to Let Go:

The item no longer serves a purpose in your current life

There is not enough room or space to store it

It requires more energy to keep than it gives

How to Master Your Muck Tips for What to Keep:

It serves a purpose

You have space to store it

You enjoy looking at it and it makes you happy

Why Master the Muck in Your Life?

It makes you feel good

Provides a sense of accomplishment

It allows you to live your purpose

It will pave the way to more prosperity

Situation:

With only a small desk and no defined office space, this client had to keep track of massive amounts of information. With such a small space, my news producer was in desperate need to develop better methods to keep it all organized.

Challenge:

This work space was not only very small but also shared by other staff when Jay was not working. Additionally, there is a continuous flow of new information that arrives daily in varying forms. He could receive DVDs, newpapers, large banners, books or giant posters. How could he keep all of this mixed media organized and accessible?

Solution:

Jay and I had a long discussion about how his work flowed in and out during his work week. This helped me determine ways to categorize and organize the information as it came into his space along with deciding where it should live while it was in progress. With such a complex schedule and task load, this space is still a work in progress. I am certain that we will wind up with a completely sustainable system developed especially for Jay according to the way he thinks and also the way he handles his workflow throughout the week.

Tips for organizing a busy workspace

1. Determine what tools are most important to do your job

2. Get rid of materials that are no longer relevant

3. Prioritize what tools you use and keep the most important tools closest to you

4. Assign a functional space for each type of item

Solutions to common work space challenges

1. Piles of business cards?

Scan your business cards and export to database

2. Materials coming in all day from outside sources?

Designate an inbound place for them to land

Create a holding zone while they are in use

In his incredible book The Hidden Messages in Water Mr Emoto shows scientifically how the power of words will change the crystalline structure of water/ice in this You Tube video.

The amazing conclusion from Mr. Emoto’s research is that the words that have the most power to create perfect crystalline structures are around gratitude.

Go ahead and express thanks for everything around you even if it does not appear to be in perfect order. It can and will create positive change in your life.

I think the time has come when many of us are ready to discover our life purposes and more importantly, ready to begin living our life purposes. Life purpose is not out there. Discovery of life purpose is an inner journey. It’s amazing how many kindred spirit leaders are emerging in the workplace and how identifying and beginning to live their life purpose is many times the catalyst for this emergence. Be it at work or putting out the trash at home, the inner journey to higher purpose is possible.

At this time in history, we are to take nothing personally, least of all ourselves, for the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey come to a halt. The time of the lone wolf is over. Gather yourselves. Banish the word struggle from your attitude and vocabulary. All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
WE are the ones we have been waiting for.

I might add: YOU are the ONE you have been waiting for.

Thank you for reading my words. Thank you, thank you, thank you (Dibble VOW Mantra).

I have always been a big fan of cucumbers. Sliced thin with a little rice wine vinegar and dill, or chopped into squares with tomatoes and basil, yummy! Now I love them even more. From bad breath to cellulite to hangover prevention, check out all of the ways these little green parcels of goodness will work overtime for us.

1.Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2.Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5 Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10. Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won’t leave streaks and won’t harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Forward this to everybody you know who is looking for better and environmentally safe ways to solve life’s everyday problems.

Your first year away at college can be stressful. After a long time of anticipation, you are now on your own and responsible for creating your independent life and your schedule. How you spend your time at college will dictate the your success or failure. Having an organized plan of action will save you untold stress and help you enjoy your college experience to the fullest.

Tip One: Plan your days. After you have settled into your dormitory and met your roommate, get out a new binder and sit down with your class schedule. You will need to attend all your classes, schedule time for studying, eat, sleep, and also do your own laundry. There are only so many hours in a day, but by managing your time wisely, you can do all of the above and still have time for a fun-filled social life!

Tip Two: Get enough sleep. After you have decided what time you should arise each morning, figure out what time you should go to bed in order to be well rested. Be courteous with your alarm clock; if they don’t have to be up until hours after you do, repeatedly hitting the snooze button may cause discord. Check with your roommate; you may need to agree on a schedule for bathroom privileges so neither of you will be late for class.

Tip Three: Study faithfully. On ‘light’ class days, plan on extra studying right after class, while you are at your most alert and before you drift into recreational activities. Keep the television, phone and instant messenger turned off during your study period. If you are too tempted by the relaxing atmosphere of your room, the library is a good alternate study environment. Breaks are necessary to refresh your mind and body, but don’t let yourself get distracted; make a habit of setting definite goals and meeting them

Tip Four: Don’t skip class. This can adversely affect your grades and may even lead to being forced to drop out, wasting valuable time and money. If you are forced to miss a class due to an appointment at the doctor or dentist, take your textbook or class notes with you so the time will well spent.

Tip Five: Eat right. Keep your body healthy, and your mind will benefit too! If you opt out of the cafeteria, try to keep your room stocked with healthy snacks, and plan on at least one hot meal per day.

Tip Six: Remember to have fun! College is a wonderful privilege, and social interaction is a large part of the whole experience. Pick and choose your parties carefully – it is all right to have a good time, but stay away from the law-breaking crowd; your education is too important to risk by an ill fated adventure.

College is the first big step on the road to life. By managing your time wisely, you will lay the foundation for prosperity in the years ahead. Be smart, and balance your life with the proper mix of studying and socializing, and you will graduate a strong, mature person, ready for whatever lies ahead!

Challenge:

Helping this client realize that ‘stepping up his image’ would not mean wearing uncomfortable clothes. Getting him out of his day-to-day tennis shoe routine. After all, tennis shoes should only be seen when going to and from the gym or a sporting event!

Solution:

Finding separate pieces that were casual and comfortable but were a tad dressier than the clothes he normally selected. I found dark washed jeans that he could pair with a nice shirt and even a sport coat, if necessary, for board meetings. Also, dark green and brown jeans that had a bit more edge than blue jeans when paired with a sport coat.

I found incredibly stylish shoes that had tennis shoe soles and similar fit and feel but were constructed in dark brown leather.

*Please note: This photo was taken during shop phase and before tailoring and alterations.

Situation:

This balcony was used as a catch-all for items that needed to be moved to other places within the house. It all began with the laundry. The family needed a central location to gather laundry and the ideal spot was on the balcony outside two of the bedrooms. This was a OK idea but, as we know, when items outgrow their space, clutter grows into more clutter!

Challenge:

The baskets being used did not provide enough space for all of the laundry as it landed there. Once the laundry began to overflow, other totally unrelated items began to gather there as well. Surprise! OK, not really…

Solution:

We cleared away everything that was not laundry related and either donated it or moved it to other parts of the house. The kids were old enough to safely remove the mesh barrier. We purchased a set of nice wood cabinets that held three large laundry bins. Now the landing area is clean and clear and the laundry is behind closed doors! The view from the front door looking up is fantastic and even the dog loves the new perspective.

*Please note: the picture does not show the new three drawer laundry system. It was taken after we had cleared the landing and before the new cabinet was installed The photo above is representative of what we used for the cabinet solution.

This is an excerpt from my new book~ How to Master Your Muck. If you are in the process of setting goals for your life, this chapter might help make the process a bit easier.

Think and Speak Specifics

Create a mission statement for your goal. Effective mission statements should include components such as values, vision and purpose. One of my clients created this mission, ”My mission is to help others to grow personally, professionally, emotionally, and spiritually by using my compassion, my unique perspective and my belief in others’ inherent goodness and enormous potential.” Create your own. Learn to say it aloud to yourself and others. Be specific and keep it simple. How many new clients or how much revenue do you wish to make in what period of time? Think about your goals in the way that comes naturally to you. Some think short term, some think long.

Although I’m not an avatar, sometimes I see a goal and it magically manifests without all of the baby steps in between. It can be done! I would wager that, if you were to seriously consider the accomplishments in your life, you have also done this a few times yourself. The key is to keep it so simple, clear and real in your mind that you never forget what it is that you are aiming for. You also need to state it clearly and frequently to yourself and others and see it ”as so” on a daily basis. Enough metaphysical science for now . . .

Write the Path to Your Goal

Lay out your vision step-by-step in your mind and write all that you see on a piece of paper. When you write down the path to your goal, keep it simple but add as many details as you see.

If you are one of those people who don’t bother writing their goals because they always fail, realize this: those people who do write their goals on paper will actually accomplish some, if not all of them. I have a friend from South Africa who always has a list of 10 goals in writing at any given time. This is what he wrote to me about his life:

“When I was young, I figured out my life somehow played out in cycles of seven years. I decided then to create a plan to include 10 definitive objectives that would manifest into tangible goals that I could achieve within each seven-year period. If I didn’t reach some goals, it was okay because they rolled over into the next period. So, in essence, I had this ferris wheel of hope and desire that always seemed full of ideas. The tools to accomplish this was the key… I had immediate and weekly goals that served my monthly goals, which in turn made my seven-year plan reachable. ‘Start small but visualize big’ is my motto I suppose.”

A few of the goals Kevin has accomplished to date includes getting his green card without an attorney and, against all odds, after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, taking a camping holiday through Europe, hiking the Grand Canyon (which he has now done three times) and meeting his childhood hero, Mohammed Ali, in person by simply knocking on his door.

It helps to surround yourself with visionaries. Their ability to reach their own lofty goals affirms that you can do the same.

Everyone visualizes the progress towards an end result differently. The analytical businessperson might plot their progress in percentages towards the goal. Artistic creative types might find the most rewarding tracking method is a graph that allows them to see their progression to the final outcome.

There is no perfect single method for accomplishing your goals. Your chosen path simply needs to motivate you and allow you to see and feel clearly defined results every step along the way. This visible progress will keep you motivated and enthusiastic as you move towards your goal.

Keeping goals simple and definable means that they are organizable. As Epictetus said: ‘First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” I would add a side note to this statement. Being organized and having the path clearly defined as you proceed towards your goal is invaluable. This way, if something does go awry, you can shift and still move toward your goal, even if from a different direction, because it has become crystal clear in your thoughts. You might need to tack away from the wind, but your course will still remain true.
