Escondido Creek Conservancy Expands “Trout in the Classroom” Program

The Escondido Creek Conservancy proudly celebrates the successful expansion of its Trout in the Classroom program, made possible through support from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fisheries Restoration Grant Program.

The Conservancy recently secured funding to grow and sustain the program over the next four years—marking a major milestone that will broaden its impact and deepen student engagement in local outdoor education.

Expanding Hands-On Learning

This investment allows the Conservancy to deliver a comprehensive, multi-step educational experience for students across the region.

Participating classrooms receive:

Trout eggs
Aquarium systems
Ongoing instructional support

Students raise trout from egg to fry while learning directly through hands-on experience. The program also covers transportation costs, ensuring equitable access to trout release field trips for all participating schools.

1,300+ Students Reached Across the Region

During the 2025–2026 school year, the program served more than 1,300 students in grades 2–11 across eight schools and three school districts.

Through a combination of:

Classroom lessons
Aquarium care
Outdoor field experiences

students participated in a project-based learning journey focused on the trout life cycle and the habitat needs of this sensitive native species.

A Major Milestone: Lake Wohlford Release Site

A standout moment this year was the Conservancy’s first-ever trout release at Lake Wohlford.

Recently approved as an official release site, Lake Wohlford represents the headwaters of the Escondido Creek watershed—making it a powerful, mission-aligned setting for student learning and environmental stewardship.

This addition strengthens the program’s place-based approach, directly connecting students to the ecosystems in their own backyard.

Building Connection to the Environment

The program focuses on the endangered Southern steelhead trout, a species that has declined due to:

Habitat loss
Blocked migration routes
Reduced water quality

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The experience continues with upcoming field trips to the Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve, where students will:

Explore Escondido Creek firsthand
Conduct water quality testing

These immersive experiences reinforce students’ roles as future environmental stewards.

35th Anniversary Matching Campaign

As the Conservancy celebrates this year’s success, the community is invited to support its ongoing work through the 35th Anniversary Matching Campaign.

All donations made in 2026 will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million, helping expand education programs like Trout in the Classroom and ensuring long-term conservation impact.

Get ready for an unforgettable week of riding, crafts, water games, dress-up photo day, and more RIDING! Campers get one-on-one time in the ring with counselors and horses.

WHAT TO BRING:
A great attitude, long pants, sturdy shoes/boots, ponytails or braids for long hair (helmets provided), and a sack lunch.
We provide water, juice, pretzels, red licorice, and Otter Pops throughout the day—no extra candy needed.

We keep things cool with water games (yes… even riding through sprinklers) and plenty of fun—including water blaster battles.

WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS

Monday & Tuesday:
Check-in, sign forms, and ride twice daily.

Wednesday – Photo Dress-Up Day
Ride first, then lunch and a full-on themed photo shoot (think wild hair + steampunk elves). Professional photos included.

Thursday – Water Wipeout Day
Ride practice for the show, then water slide fun (bring swimsuit, towel, flip flops). Finish with a fun ride in summer gear.

Friday – Show Off Day
Ride, prep the horses, and perform for family and friends.
Parents arrive at 12:00 PM for the show and celebration.

From the beginning, HomeFed Corporation set out to create more than a development. Led by visionary planner Kurt Noland—who had previously shaped the resort-style community of Aviara—the team aimed to build a place that felt rooted. Not just in geography, but in purpose.

The plant palette focused on drought-tolerant California natives—sages, manzanita, buckwheat, California lilac—chosen for their resilience and ability to support local pollinators and wildlife. The goal was simple: reduce water use, match the landscape, and create something that feels right with the seasons.

Homes were painted in warm neutrals—sunbaked taupe, olive green trim, terracotta roofs—colors pulled directly from the surrounding hills and canyons. These homes don’t compete with the view—they let the land take the lead.

Wood Rail Fencing vs. Plastic and Metal

That same thoughtful design shows up in the details, too—like the fencing.

Throughout San Elijo Hills, you’ll still find rustic split-rail wood fencing lining trails and greenbelts. It’s a small design choice with a big impact. The weathered wood blends into the chaparral. It’s authentic. Textural. Grounded.

Compare that to shiny plastic or metal fencing, which often feels out of place here—too clean, too sterile, too suburban. The original team didn’t want something that screamed “new.” They wanted something that felt natural. The kind of fence you’d expect to find bordering an old ranch trail or a quiet overlook.

It’s those choices—the ones that don’t always scream for attention—that quietly define the character of San Elijo Hills.

Community Design with Intention

From the placement of parks to the layout of the town center, every decision was made with environmental design and lifestyle in mind. Winding streets follow the terrain. Trails connect neighborhoods. Schools and businesses anchor the heart of town.
