Construction of the new Sussex Street stair is nearing completion. The new stair treads are being filled and the hillside will receive fine grading before it is covered in erosion control netting. It is expected that the stair will open in mid-May with a temporary handrail. The permanent handrail is now being made to match the exact layout out the stairway. It should replace the temporary handrail in late May to early June.

As you are aware, demolition of the stair occurred in late November of 2017. When construction began, we made an unexpected discovery regarding the existing soil conditions, which required minor adjustments to the design.  After the adjustments, work was scheduled to resume in January, however, since then there have been several delays related to the project’s contractor.

I understand and share your frustration regarding the lack of progress with the stair replacement. Please be assured that the project team has been working diligently to resolve the schedule delays. We continue to strive on providing transparent updates so the community is well informed. We anticipate work to resume second week of April. We look forward delivering more updates in the weeks to come.

Replacement of the stairs at the intersection of Sussex and Elk Streets will begin on November 27, 2017. Please observe the trail detours and closures as shown on the map above. It is anticipated that construction of the new stair will be complete in February 2018.

This is a long-anticipated improvement that will require a temporary trail detour behind the Glen Canyon Recreation Center. Construction is anticipated to take approximately 2 months, barring excessively rainy weather.

Information regarding the closure timeline and detour route will be forthcoming.

Glen Park Recreation Center’s Gym is now officially open to the public! Feel to drop by the facility from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (except Sundays) for open gym on the newly renovated basketball courts! In addition, take a sneak peak at some of the building’s new features, which includes brand new rock climbing walls!

Along Elk Street, a new backflow preventer has been installed by the drop-off. This device is part of the new water meter and water line for the Rec Center. Nearby, the community bulletin sign has also been repaired and features new plexiglass with an anti-graffiti coating, new metal letters, and a refinished cow. The sign at the Bosworth entrance also received new coated plexiglass.

Heading into the spring, the remaining work will focus on final finishes, such as painting, cabinetry, and floors, as well as the new landscape around the building. Stay tuned!

Blue-tinted waterproofing being applied to the building exterior.

Inside, elements such as cabinets and lighting are currently being installed along with finishes such as countertops and tile. Renovation of the fireplace, which is being converted to a modern gas system, is also well underway.

The original timber frame around the fireplace is preserved while the hearth is being converted to a modern gas-burning system.

The Public Utilities Commission has been busy making repairs to the Islais Creek culvert under the baseball field. A hole in the 90-year old concrete culvert had caused soil subsidence during the recent rainstorms. The repair should be complete by the end of January. Unrelated work will also occur nearby in the next few weeks as a new backflow and water meter for the Rec Center are installed next to the Elk Street drop-off.

Restroom tile work is complete prior to the installation of plumbing fixtures.

Structural reinforcement of the chimney nears completion prior to the installation of the fireplace façade.

The welcome desk takes shape as drywall is completed.

New basketball hoops have been installed in the gymnasium.

A new water line is also being installed between the Rec Center and Elk Street. Trenching work along the pathway should be complete by late January.

An area of soil subsidence unrelated to the trench has occurred in the play fields. Please respect the barricades around this area until the situation has been resolved. Thank you for your patience.

The Twin Peaks Figure 8 Redesign Team is excited to announce a proposed pilot project that will open a portion of the Twin Peaks Figure 8 to people walking and riding bikes!  The pilot project is an opportunity to evaluate a configuration change at the Twin Peaks Figure 8 while the Twin Peaks Redesign team continues to consider long term improvements to improve access at Twin Peaks. The broader project goals include:

• Reallocate a portion of the existing roadway from vehicle use to pedestrian and bicycle use;
• Locate pedestrian crossings to link with trail sections; and
• Recommend realignment of the Bay Area Ridge Trail to cross over Twin Peaks Blvd.

Twin Peaks Figure 8 Pilot

Our partners at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) are proposing to close a portion of Twin Peaks Boulevard to motor vehicles as a pilot project. This proposal would convert the western alignment to two-way operation, and close the eastern alignment to motor vehicles while maintaining access for people walking and biking. Imagine JFK Sunday Streets, every day of the week!

The project would be implemented sometime this summer, using paint and temporary railings to prevent motor vehicle access to the eastern half of the roadway.

The pilot road closure is the first step for the Figure 8 Redesign.  For folks not aware of the Figure 8 Redesign project, please visit the Rec and Park project page and also please reference a blog post that includes materials from a 2015 public open house.  The presentation materials outlines and describes alternatives considered.  We are in the process of completing a more comprehensive conceptual plan for the space and will share that with you in the coming months before finalizing.

On Monday morning, February 22, we will close the trail with fence panels and sign it with a detour route (Turquoise) for the remainder of the project. Construction is anticipated to take approximately 2 months.

Thank you for your patience. The trail is being improved with support from the San Francisco Parks Alliance.  Once completed, it will be easier for people to traverse and more environmentally sustainable.

As you can tell if you have visited the southern end of Glen Park recently, the recreation center renovation is well underway.

As anticipated, due to aspects of the work on the building renovation, the stair which leads from the northern end of the northern tennis court to the upper trail above the tennis courts will be closed at times over the next three weeks. Please use the alternate entries and exits from the tennis courts, in other words, the lower entries from the playfield sides of the tennis courts.

We are excited to report that thanks to support from the San Francisco Parks Alliance and an agreement with the San Francisco Unified School District, a contractor will very soon begin work on a critical section of our Creeks to Peaks trail corridor.The completed Creeks to Peaks Connector Trail will provide a safe pathway highlighting a premier urban hiking experience through Glen Canyon Park to the summits of Twin Peaks. The project will improve steep and unsafe sections by constructing box steps and realigning the tread surface to a more sustainable grade. Additionally, muddy sections of trail will be elevated providing a dry hiking trail surface.

The contractor’s start date was originally anticipated to be January 19 but has been postponed due to weather. We anticipate mobilization by late January/early February.

Just wanted to provide you with a brief update on the Glen Canyon Recreation Center Project. As you may know, we are well underway with the renovation of the Recreation Center, which was overwhelmingly approved by San Francisco voters in the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond (see below info and links for more information/background).

The construction is proceeding, as you can see in the attached photo of the current interior ceiling appearance of the auditorium. I bet you didn’t know there were such pretty trusses under that old drop ceiling! These will be visible after the renovation, which I think will be great.

Recreation Center Renovation Ongoing/ What to Expect in the Next Few Months:

During renovation of the recreation center the ballfields, playground, and tennis courts are still all open. We have also provided two ADA accessible Porta-Potties available onsite seven days a week while the building is closed for renovation.

Over the next few months a lot of the work will continue inside the building, so you won’t see a lot going on from the outside. You will see portions of the structure removed, but we are keeping the main structures – the gym, auditorium, and the office wing – of the building. A lot is happening inside.

I am working to renovate the Sussex street steps with the trails program, and I will be providing an update on that as soon as I can.

In this project, one tree adjacent to the building has been identified for removal due to its health, structural and safety concerns. At this time, this is the only tree identified for removal and replacement. Additionally, this renovation project will include the planting of thirty-five new trees around the building.

The work is coming along on the Rec Center construction.  A lot of what we are doing right now is inside, so you won’t see a lot right now on the outside of the building.

The pathway and tennis court lighting has been acting up, for example, off at times it is expected to be on.  We are still working to make it work correctly, so in the meantime, for safety, we are leaving the lights on.  This is a temporary situation and we appreciate your patience.

The areas that will be closed during construction include the recreation center building and the related patio (in front of the restroom current door), the lawn directly to the north of the building, the picnic areas directly around the building, including the picnic area at the back of the auditorium. The main construction staging area is planned behind the rec center on the lawn area. We are happy to report that the Glen Canyon Trails Improvement Project is substantially complete and open to the public. The contractor should be completely finished and out of the Canyon in the coming weeks.

As many folks know, we are calling our trail corridor connecting Glen Canyon Park with Twin Peaks the “Creeks to Peaks” trail. Now that we have completed the section of “Creeks to Peaks” within Glen Canyon, we are working north to connect to Twin Peaks.

The hillside behind the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts belongs not to Rec and Park but to the San Francisco Unified School District, which is why we could not include improvements in this area in our Parks Bond-funded Glen Canyon Trails Improvement Project.  We do, however, have a plan to complete improvements to that section of trail, which will allow us to connect the Creeks to Peaks trail corridor from Glen Canyon to Twin Peaks.

Phase 1:

Design connector trail alignment and clear rough path from the bridge on Rec and Park property up to Portola Ave: COMPLETED

Phase 2:

Host V-O-Cal (Volunteers for Outdoor California) event: this is a large scale trail building volunteer group that will camp in the Canyon and work on trail projects over the weekend of July 18-19. Rec and Park works with V-O-Cal every year, and partnered to complete the Portola Trail section of “Creeks to Peaks” on Twin Peaks in September 2013.

This event should complete most of the trail bed/corridor finish work. Neighbors and those interested in participating in this trail work event July 18 and/or July 19 can find more information and register via the V-O-Cal website.

Phase 3:

Contractor will install box steps on the steep section of the trail (close to Portola Ave) and install signage: Fall/Winter 2015 (this is separate from the current contract work for the Glen Canyon TRAILS Improvement Project as it is not on RPD property. This work will be funded by private donations received via the San Francisco Parks Alliance)

Recently, we did incorporate the required public art into the project, via the Art Commission Process. Charles Sower’s proposal was selected, and it will be incorporated into the area which is current designated for planting and picnic area in front of the auditorium. We will still have 3 picnic tables in this area. We plan to close the Recreation Center to the public at the end of May.

I want to provide an update on the Art Selection process for Glen Canyon Rec Center.

On January 16^th , the Selection Panel met and recommended that Charles Sowers be awarded the commission, and the Visual Arts Committee supported this decision. Final approval will be sought at the Full Commission Meeting on Monday, February 2.

Contractor completing trail and box step work on the east slope of the Canyon

• New steps along trail near Christopher Playground are nearly done
• The contractor will install about 30 feet of split rail fencing along the north side of the steps to discourage folks from shortcutting through sensitive plant area
• The area on either side of the new steps and trail will also be seeded to help plants reestablish
• The entrance at Christopher Playground should be opened by end of next week
• There is one more section of trail and box steps just down slope from the steps to Christopher that should also be completed in next 2 weeks
• Much closer to the rec center, there is a trail reroute in a very steep area, that involves one more set of box steps and stringer steps

Trail between Bosworth and Silver Tree

• This is the section of trail that is being improved to meet ADA Outdoor Accessibility guidelines, which requires a lot of field coordination to meet requirements
• We encountered some technical issues during construction of retaining walls installed just south of Silver Tree, which caused fairly major delays
• The 2 walls closest to Silver Tree are nearly completed
• There will be one more retaining wall and a small trail re-route near the trail fork closer to Bosworth

• We are committed to replacing the steps that enter the park from Elk Street @ Sussex
• Our hope was to add this scope to the trail improvement project; however, because we are so far behind schedule with the base bid work for the trails project, there is a chance that this work will be completed under a separate contract.  In any case, we are coordinating with Glen Ridge, Silver Tree, and the community and know that it is a high neighborhood priority so are pursuing the most expedient and cost-efficient mechanism for completion

• Per request from Rec and Park, the contractor will be installing some more robust temporary storm water control measures around their staging area and along Alms Road to minimize erosion and damage to the road

• Accompanying the new and improved trails will be several interpretive sign panels depicting 3 different ecological systems as well as the Canyon history.  We will also be installing entrance signs with maps at key entrances and small way-finding placards on posts throughout the trail system

This week the finalists for the Glen Canyon Park Public Art Project go on display for public comment at the Glen Park Rec Center.   As many of you know, an artist and art proposal was not selected from the last round of proposals for art for the Rec Center Project Renovation, so these will be four new proposals.

As you may see, this round of proposals is focused to the south of the auditorium space, where there is currently a planting and picnic area.  We will work to make sure that picnic areas are provided in the upcoming recreation center renovation.  In our current design, a new patio with picnic areas behind the renovated recreation center is included (near the lawn area to the north of the building) and we will work with the artists and others to find a good location to incorporate picnic near the playground as well, to the south of the building.​

Starting this Friday, September 26, the trail to Glen Ridge Nursery School/Silver Tree on the west side of the creek will be closed so that our contractor can work on this section of trail and install retaining wall features to stabilize the trail and minimize erosion. The trail will be blocked with orange construction fencing and signage explaining the closure/ project. The installation of retaining walls along either side of the trail from where the old wood railing (see below) is, north toward Glen Ridge/ Silver Tree should take 2-3 weeks.

Following completion of that section of the trail, we will be working on the middle of the trail, in the area near where the new creek crossing has gone in.

Update on the public art selection process for Glen Park Rec Center Renovation: the next meeting will be on September 30. The Glen Canyon Art Selection Panel will meet and review a group of shortlisted artists. This shortlist of artists will be selected from the pre-qualified and other recent public art project pools, managed by the Art Commission. At the meeting three finalists  will be selected from this shortlist to create  proposals for the Glen Canyon Recreation Center Public Art Opportunity.

This is a public meeting, so please feel free to attend and provide feedback in the public comment portion of the meeting.  It will be held: September 30^th, 2-6pm at 25 Van Ness Avenue, Suite 70.

Later in the year a final selection panel will be held to select 1 artist for the commission.

The agenda will be posted online 72 hrs before the panel.

On August 4^th, 2014 the finalists for the Glen Canyon Park Public Art Project presented their artwork proposals to the Artist Selection Panel. After careful review and extensive deliberation, the Panel voted to not recommend any of the artwork proposals for implementation. The recommendation will be heard at the Arts Commission’s Visual Arts Committee meeting on August 20, 2014. At that time, the Committee will develop a recommendation for how to proceed with art at this site. This meeting is open to the public. A majority of trail improvements on the eastern slope of the Canyon are complete, and the contractor will be reopening these trails in the coming week or so. Thank you for your patience as we complete a couple last sets of “stringer stairs” on the eastern slope as well as verifying proper drainage. The last improvements to the eastern slope will be restoration planting in the vicinity of the trails once we get rain this fall as well as installation of way finding and interpretive signage this fall.

One of the 3 new creek crossings, just north of Silver Tree/ Glen Ridge is near completion (see below), and construction on the other 2 has begun and will continue in the next week or two.

We are excited to report that our “Creeks to Peaks” trails corridor has been selected as the featured project for the San Francisco Parks Alliance’s Party for the Parks gala, which will take place on September 13: http://www.sfparksalliance.org/our-work/philanthropy/party-parks.  A portion of funds raised will go to support completion of the “Creeks to Peaks” corridor, including interpretive and way finding signage in the Canyon.

That combined with the work of our gardening staff over the last few week, we have been focusing on taking out the radish and the mustard, starting at the northern end of the hillside area of focus near the back of the rec center, and working towards Elk street.

We hope that with this push we will reach the Elk Street edge of the area, removing the main mustard and radish growth on the hillside.

If you would like to join us, please meet at 9am-Noon above the tennis courts, on Elk Street.   I will be at the drop off zone at Elk street near the new entrance at 9am.

We have been working with the San Francisco Arts Commission and the Department of Public Works artists to develop artwork that will highlight the aspects of the park that you told us were important to you. Welcome Remarks and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

SF Rec and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg welcomes Supervisor Scott Wiener, Glen Park Association, neighbors and parks advocates.  A ribbon cutting ceremony takes place to celebrate the opening of Glen Canyon Park playground.

BACKGROUND

For decades, locals have enjoyed the beautiful natural landscape and varied recreational offerings at the historic Glen Canyon Park. In recent years, residents have voiced the need for renovating the park and in 2008, voted to allocate nearly $6 million to promote the park’s natural features and provide a new playground, new tennis courts, and an improved entry for the park.

Tomorrow morning, the contractor we’re working with will be bringing in some equipment to begin removing the two old asphalt drainage ditches just below the entry at Turquoise and Amber.  These ditches are no longer functional and will be replaced with beautiful planted swales in the coming weeks.

Several folks have asked whether the stairs that have been removed will be replaced. Indeed, thanks for your patience.  The trail will be realigned to make it less steep and therefore less erosive and more accessible and replacement stairs will be installed.   The contractor and our staff did do some preliminary marking of proposed trail layout back in December by placing stakes with green plastic “whiskers.”  Stay tuned for details on the timing of the trail construction in this area.

For your safety and for the safety of our contractors, please heed temporary trail closures.

As of January 7^th, the Recreation Center is open!  The Rec Center is open with a new heating system and ready to be enjoyed on the following dates and times:

Tuesday – Friday:             9 am – 9 pm

Saturday:                            9 am – 5 pm

Please note that the Rec Center can be entered near the Bosworth Street entrance to the park.  We have placed signs up around the park to point you in the right direction.

The remainder of the Glen Canyon Playground and Tennis Court Project is nearing completion.  The tennis courts are in place.  The play equipment is being installed.  Additionally, the new restroom on the side of the Rec Center will open when the new playground does.  In the next two weeks, you will see planting of the parks many new trees and shrubs begin.  The park is planned to be reopened in late February.  We are planning an opening celebration with Supervisor Scott Wiener, Glen Park Association and SF Rec and Park for late February.

2012 Bond Renovation:

The Glen Canyon Park Recreation Center Renovation, funded by the 2012 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond, is proceeding as planned.  We are continuing to work on the detailed design of the Recreation Center that includes the following elements: the overall renovation of the existing building, two new additions which will provide three multi-purpose spaces/classrooms, a large teaching kitchen, new restrooms, new recreational amenities, a clear main entry and central welcome desk, and related landscaping surrounding the building.  The public art element selection process is beginning and we will have options for the community to review and provide feedback on later this Spring.  Please continue to check the project blog for updates.

Just wanted to provide an update – as you can see if you have been near the project soon,  The Glen Canyon Playground and Tennis Court Project is really moving along, if you see the park now, you will see that the new tennis courts are in place, and the new playgrounds is emerging. Over the next few weeks you will see the remaining pathways installed, the play equipment and slide and the new planting!

Additionally, the waterline is almost complete from Diamond Heights Blvd and around the steps at Elk Street. At times, the path along the guardrail on Diamond Heights and the entrance – the steps from Elk Street – might be impacted due to the utility work.  We apologize for the inconvenience. The entrance behind the backstop on Elk and the Bosworth entrance are expected to remain open throughout the remainder of the project.

Simultaneously, we will be working to improve the new sidewalk and build the new drop off at Elk street, so over the final phase of the project, a portion of Elk Street’s sidewalk on the west side will be closed in front of the construction area at times to allow for this work. The east side of Elk Street’s sidewalk will remain open.

As you may know, in the course of the construction, we have encountered some unanticipated complications.  We encountered some site conditions that delayed the work including unanticipated utility work, including the installation of a new water line.

Just wanted to update you – for those of you are that are still interested to see EVEN more of us, as I mentioned in my last email update and blog post, the design team will be presenting the current design (first of 3 times) to the Civic Design Committee on Monday, December 16^th, 25 Van Ness Ave. – Suite 70.  The meeting starts at 3pm.  I do not know when the Glen Canyon project will be presented, the meetings sometimes go until 6pm.  For more info on this process, http://www.sfartscommission.org/CDR/home/index.html  or call me, and I will try to answer any questions you have or refer you to someone who can.

Next Steps:

As the overall concept design (floor plan, building program and major spaces)have been confirmed in our community process, I will be presenting the project and the results of our community process to the Rec Park Commission’s Capital Committee on December 4th for their feedback and review.  The Capital Committee will meet in City Hall, Room 416 at 2:00 p.m. Please see the below link or call me if you have questions or would like more information. https://sstasio.wpengine.com/about/recreation-park-commission/.  Next the project may be reviewed by the full Commission on December 19^th at 10am.

Additionally, as we discussed in the meetings we will spend the next several months refining the design and the including materials for the exterior additions through the civic design commission’s progress. I know many of you are eager for an update. The Glen Canyon Playground and Tennis Court Project is really moving along, if you see the park now, you will see that the new tennis courts are in place, and the new playgrounds are emerging. Over the next several weeks you will see the remaining pathways installed, the play equipment and slide and the new planting!

Additionally, you will also see the new waterline work in progress along Diamond Heights Blvd and around the steps at Elk Street. At times, the path along the guardrail on Diamond Heights and the entrance – the steps from Elk Street – might be impacted due to the utility work. Most days, they will be able to finish work and allow for access after 4:30pm.  We apologize for the inconvenience. The entrance behind the backstop on Elk and the Bosworth entrance are expected to remain open throughout the remainder of the project.

Simultaneously, we will be working to improve the new sidewalk and build the new drop off at Elk street, so over the final phase of the project, a portion of Elk Street’s sidewalk on the west side will be closed in front of the construction area at times to allow for this work. The east side of Elk Street’s sidewalk will remain open.

As you may know, in the course of the construction, we have encountered some unanticipated complications.  We encountered some site conditions that delayed the work including unanticipated utility work, including the installation of a new water line. At this time we expect the Rec Center work to be completed in late November or early December, allowing for the center to reopen for Spring programming which starts in January. The new playground and tennis courts and the related park work are anticipated to be complete in late January.

The Glen Canyon Playground and Tennis Court Project is moving along, if you see the park now, you will see that the tennis courts and playground are emerging.  In addition, we are finishing the limited work at the Bosworth Entrance (to replace the swing gate, etc.) and along a portion of the connection to the road north of the recreation center where it connects to Alms Road (and the route to Silver Tree) for erosion control and stabilization of that area.   We expect that work to be done at the end of the month.

There have been some questions regarding the work at the dirt road connection to Bosworth.  We are NOT paving that connection, but we are trying to address a long-tem erosion issue near the creek and undermining of the adjacent tree – sometimes called the “owl tree’s” roots.  We are using the natural soil in that area with a natural soil stabilizer it will be like soil, but not erode as much as in the past.  That work will be completed next week.

Also, please note on Monday, October 28^th, access by foot via the Bosworth Road Entrance and the connection to Alms Road behind the Recreation Center will not be possible due to work between the hours of 7am-5pm.  The work might be concluded before 5pm.   If you are visiting the park, several entrances will remain open including 1)the steps from Elk Street (above the construction area), 2) the gate on Elk Street near the ball fields, and 2) the steps to the ball fields from Bosworth and many others around the park. On the 14th, like throughout the project, you will continue to be able to access Alms Road by the steps from Elk Street, or from the other entrances via the trail on the west side of the creek.  Remember, there is a bridge at Silvertree where you can cross over the creek.

I wanted to provide you all an update on the project’s progress.  Things are going relatively well, and the work is well underway.  As you might notice, the contractor has been installing form work and rebar for the new playground area and the tennis courts and is starting to install concrete.

As often happens, we have encountered some complications.  We found some of the site’s sewer lines to be full of debris, requiring some additional work.  Additionally, we determined that we needed to install a new water line, which had not been anticipated.

We have been working diligently to complete the new heating system in the recreation center and hoping to reopen the building prior to the overall project’s scheduled completion date of November 4^th.  However, it has become clear that we cannot open the recreation center until the new water line is installed.  Moreover, due to the additional work, we may have a delay in the completion of the project.  We are determining how long that delay might be.  At this time, we are still pushing to complete the project by November 4^th, and we may still be able to reopen the recreation center prior to the completion of the overall project.  I hope to have an updated completion date shortly.

In the next few weeks, you will start to see some limited work done a bit north of the fenced off area, around the Bosworth Entrance (to replace the swing gate, etc.) and along a portion of the connection to the road north of the recreation center where it connects to Alms Road (and the route to Silver Tree) for erosion control and stabilization of that area.  As reviewed in previous meetings, and as shown in the materials on the project’s webpage, this work includes the removal and pruning of select trees in that area.   These trees were included in the overall tree removal and replanting plans posted on the webpage and in public presentations last fall and this spring.

We continue to make progress on construction.  As you might notice, the contractor has started to install form work and rebar and layout the various walls for portions of the tennis courts and playground areas. As often happens, we did encounter some complications, as we founds some of the sewer lines in the site full of debris, so some additional repairs are required.  In addition, we are working to finish the heating system and a section of gym floor repair work in the building so it can be reopened as soon as possible.

We continue to make progress on construction.  After the installation of the new retaining walls grading and some soil removal, the contractor has started welding and rebar work.  This will be in progress all next week.  Soon new foundation work for the new tennis courts and additional concrete work on the retaining walls will start.

The contractor has also been work inside the recreation center including completing the new heating system.   We hope to be done with all of the work so the rec center later this summer so that it can open before the exterior park work.

The entire project is scheduled to be complete in November and we are working hard to meet that goal so we can open the new playground and tennis courts at that time.

Overall, the project is now about 30% complete.  Recently, the construction crew has been busy working on the new retaining walls for the tennis courts.  Soon, you can expect to see more grading as we start to construct the new tennis courts.

The contractor has also been hard at work inside the recreation center.  The new heating system is being installed now.  Our goal is to reopen the recreation center as soon possible.   We will let you know when it is opening. It will open before rest of the project is completed so people can use the rec center again.

Over the last few weeks and in the coming weeks, work will continue on the grading and building the new retaining walls for the new tennis courts.  In addition, work is underway inside the Rec Center to prepare for the installation of the much-anticipated, new heating system.

Again, there is some large equipment on site to do the grading and other work at this time. If you have children who enjoy watching construction vehicles work (or, are just young at heart), it can be interesting to watch.

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick update: later this week or early next work is expected to begin to make way for the new walls for the new tennis courts. There will be some new equipment on site to perform the work. If you have children who enjoy watching construction vehicles work (or, are just young at heart), there will be more to see.  A lot of folks with a lot of children have been watching the “diggers” remove the old tennis courts and paving.

Some folks have noticed that it has been quieter around the site for the past couple of weeks. Over the last few weeks there has been work performed by utility companies, which is less visible, but that work is expected to be done this week.

To date, the tennis courts and their surrounding retaining walls, as well as the old children’s play equipment have been removed to make way for the new courts, playground and other amenities.   As you may know, the old play equipment was made of pressure treated lumber, which had chemicals such as arsenic in the wood.  Though they were sealed by the city on a regular  basis, it will be great to get new equipment in the new playground!   Some of the park’s benches and tables have been removed for safekeeping; they will be returned when the renovation nears completion.

In case you were wondering, the bees that lived in a tree up on a hill above the tennis courts have been preserved.  We had hoped to cut the top portion of this decayed tree down, leaving the trunk.  However, due to the level of decay, this was not possible.  Fortunately, thanks to the assistance of an apiarist, we were able to relocate the bees.  The bees, including their queen, are currently being fostered in Potrero Hill.  We will see if and when we can re-introduce them back into the park.

Although the sights and sounds of construction can be hard to escape around the eastern end of the park, we have tried to make visiting Glen Canyon Park as enjoyable and hassle-free as possible during the renovation.  There are signs around the park that direct visitors to the open entrances, as well as provide information about the renovation project.  Also, there are ADA-accessible porta-potties that are available seven days a week; they may be found near the Bosworth Street entrance.

As you might have noticed, starting last week, the renovation project is underway!  The project is anticapated to be completed in November of 2013, assuming no additional delays.

As a reminder, major improvements include: a new children’s play area that will be almost twice as large as the old play area, a new accessible restroom, new tennis courts, improved park paths, an improved Elk Street entry and drop-off area, 163 new trees and additional new landscaping, and new heating in the recreation center.

So far, work that has occured included portions of the tree removal and removal of the existing tennis courts.  The construction fencing is in place.  The contractor will be supplying a porta potty for use shortly to be located near the bosworth street entrance.

Glen Canyon Park’s recreation center is also closed at this time so that a new heating system can be installed.  The recreation center will reopen as soon as possible.  Many parts of the park will remain open throughout the renovation.

While the project is underway, we want to remind you of the other alternative children’s play areas and tennis courts nearby that you may use during Glen Canyon Park’s renovation.  For your convenience, we are including a list of possible nearby locations.

Just in case you notice and were wondering, there will be some work on one area of the trails in Glen Canyon Park, north of the rec center, called the “saddle area”  It is north of the boardwalk and near the climbing rocks.  It will see improvements beginning January 15, 2013. This construction will last approximately 6 weeks. There will be crews working in the saddle area as well as materials staged nearby. The project will also include some planting of native shrubs in the construction area. Stairs on either side of the saddle will be replaced as part of the project. Closure of these trail sections will be minimal. When large timbers are being transported, flag people will be on site to direct park users.

The contractor hired to start the Glen Canyon Project will be starting construction activities Thursday, January 10^th.  At times, on  Thursday January 10^th and January 11^th, and the week of  January 14^th tennis courts may be closed in order to protect park users during some work.

It is anticipated that starting the week of January 14^th, more areas under renovation will be closed for public use.  This will include portions of the far southern end of Glen Canyon Park (including the playground, tennis courts, and edge of the ballfields).  The Recreation Center building is currently closed in order to receive improvements as part of this renovation, including a new heating system and a new restroom.  We are working with the contractor to provide portable toilets available for park users while the Recreation Center is closed for renovation.

The park entrances at Elk Street near the tennis courts will be closed.  Alternate park entrances will be open during construction from Elk Street, Bosworth Street.  Please see the attached flyer entitled “Glen Park Access During Renovation,” for a map of those entrances that will remain open and the areas of closure.

Glen Park Access During Neighborhood Park Renovation 1.2013

Greetings and happy holidays from the Recreation and Park Department!

We are looking forward to starting park renovation project at Glen Canyon Park. As you may have heard, the schedule has been delayed from the original start date of October 16 due to an appeal of the project’s building permit and an appeal of the project’s review under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Both appeals were reviewed and addressed. The Board of Appeals voted 4-0 to reject the appeal of the building permit, and the City Attorney’s office found the CEQA appeal untimely.

In anticipation of the start of this project, the Recreation Center (which is due to receive a new heating system in the renovation!) is closing for daily use on Saturday, December 22nd, while the rest of the park will remain open until the construction starts in and around the playground and tennis courts.

In addition, I would like to invite you to an informational project update co-sponsored by Supervisor Scott Wiener and the Glen Park Association. The Recreation and Park Department will be at the meeting to review the tree-related work, including recommended removals and new tree planting included as a part of the Glen Canyon Park renovation and to answer questions.

Another update – the appellant withdrew their re-hearing request today, so there is no hearing tonight, I am very sorry if you got this news too late, and already left for City Hall.  I heard late in the day myself.  The appeals board ‘s vote of 4-0 to deny the appeal, is now final, as I understand it.

On December 11th, an appeal of the project’s “CEQA Approval” was filed.  That is being reviewed now.

The last to file this request was November 26th. On that date, the appellant submitted a re-hearing request. The hearing for on this request is scheduled for December 12th, in City Hall, Room 416 at 5pm.

Quick update about the appeals process. As you know, the appeals board voted 4-0 to deny the appeal, but the appellant had a 10 day period to file a re-hearing request. As we have planned and communicated in flyers and elsewhere, we were planning on starting construction in mid October, this week on this project. However, on Monday an appeal was filed on the building permit that had been issued for the project. The permit and the project is now on hold until this is resolved. We hope to address and resolve this matter as soon as possible. Thanks again for all of your patience!

Thanks to everyone who participated in the planning process that began back in December 2010 and continued to through this summer, attended one of our 12+ community meetings, and provided us helpful feedback and suggestions.

As part of all capital projects, an independent arborist assessed the health and condition of trees in the area and found many to be in poor or hazardous condition. As a part of the renovation trees in poor condition or hazardous will be removed and new trees planted using best management practices, which will maintain the park landscape over time. We will be removing approximately 58 trees total and planting back over 163 – almost 3 to one replacement.

As you may have also heard, on Monday of this week, at approximately 8:30pm, two of the trees we had identified for removal and replacement broke off, and large portions of the tops of the trees, 10-20′ long fell onto the Elk Street entrance path and the hillside of the park. No one was hurt, but power was affected to the Recreation Center and Silver Tree. The area was cleaned up and power was restored the following day.

As a reminder, this project, which came out of a two year community planning process and design workshops, will include a new larger children’s play area (almost double in size of the existing one), new tennis courts, improved park pathways and ADA access, an improved Elk Street entry and drop off zone, a new accessible restroom (which can be open when the Rec Center is closed), new landscaping –including 163 new trees, and new heating in the Rec Center.

As part of the Glen Canyon Park renovation (and all park renovation projects) an independent arborist assessed the health of the trees in the park and found many to be in poor and/or hazardous condition. The trees will be re-planted following forestry management practices, including new irrigation allowing us to grow new trees and sustain this part of the urban forest.

A small number of the removals are due to the park design. However the vast majority will address public safety and tree health. 163 new trees are being replanted – well over double the number of trees that are being removed.

Some of the new tree species being planted include: Madrone, Coast Live Oak, Dogwood, Evergreen Elm, Islais Cherry, and Cottonwood. Trees will not be removed during bird nesting or breeding season.

Trees will not be removed until after the start of construction, which is currently scheduled to begin in mid-October.

We will see you all in the late summer/ early fall to develop the design for the improvements to be funded by the bond funds we have in hand – $5.8M! These include the new expanded playground, the new tennis courts, the new MUCH improved park entrance from Elk Street and drop-off area, sidewalk improvements on Elk, and a new ADA restroom for the Rec Center that will be accessible from the outside of the building when the building is closed.

At this meeting, we will integrate the Trails Improvement Plan and the Active Recreation Improvement Plan, and show phasing and funding. We will also discuss next steps in this process and future opportunities for involvement.

We want your feedback on conceptual design options for the Glen Canyon Park Improvement Plan!

The Trust for Public Land (TPL) is partnering with SF Recreation & Parks to vision and design a Park Improvement Plan for Glen Canyon Park.

At the community workshop meeting held on February 24, 2011 (the third in a series of 6 meetings to come up with a park improvement plan), the design team presented conceptual design options based on what we’ve heard from you at previous meetings and focus groups.  The options are meant to generate discussion, and your feedback will be incorporated into a preferred option that will be presented in the next workshop.

We want your feedback on the options!  We have posted images of the options on the Glen Canyon Park page of RecPark’s website. https://sstasio.wpengine.com/documents/2011-02-24Options.pdf In giving feedback, focus on the components of each option.  Rather than selecting one option over another, evaluate the pros and cons of elements in each option, and remember that components of each option can be mixed and matched.  We have attached a document to this post (word and pdf) with questions that you can use to help structure your feedback.
