John Oates will be at the Crested Butte Center of the Arts for a solo performance! He is a lifelong musician, playing for a good 15 years before meeting Daryl Hall, and now he‘s returning to his roots in the days of the Philadelphia Folk Festival, R & B, acoustic blues and folk in coffeehouses.

Oates is stepping away to play small clubs and theatres in a more personal experience with just him and his guitar, connecting with his audiences with stories and a music that is acoustic, rootsy and funky. His more recent venues include the Aspen Songwriters Festival, the Mile High Music Festival and Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where he has performed with the likes of Sam Bush and Donavon Frankenreiter (who performed to a sell-out crowd in April 2010).

Now touring extensively throughout the U.S. as a solo artist, John has recently released his third album, Mississippi Mile, focusing on the music emanating from this one geographical place. Through it he is taking R&B, folk and blues to a whole new level. He is retooling classic songs with key changes, mixed arrangements, a grizzled voice, and lyrics focused on modern day situations.

Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 the week of the show.

Art materials are provided.
Join Donna Rozman for an exciting journey into the art of design. From ceramics to printmaking and every medium in between, all works of art begin as an idea designed, sketched, and perfected on paper. In this class, Donna illustrates how to begin this process by teaching participants how translate their idea into an abstract design. These small motifs are then used to draw a larger, collaborative design that can be used in sewing, printmaking, ceramics and/or other personal projects. Colored pencils or markers are used to finish selected designs. Students are encouraged to bring in line drawings and to be ready for a fun filled afternoon.

Move the Butte is a local dance production open to all local artists, dancers, and choreographers ages 18 and older of all ability levels. All dance styles are encouraged. In the past these included: Modern & Contemporary, Nia, Tango, Aerial Dance, Stilt Walking & Circus Arts, Spoken Word, Tap, Hip Hop, Strip Tease, African Dance & Drumming, Irish Soft Shoe Dancing, Hoopdance and Jazz. Performances are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on March 2 and a 4:00 p.m. matinee and 8:00 p.m. show on March 3. A World Class Yearly Event

The Extreme Freeskiing Championship in Crested Butte is one of a kind. Competitors from all over the U.S., Canada and Europe are faced with extremely challenging terrain and competition. The event is held in the Crested Butte Ski Resort in an area that is not usually open to recreational skiing. This competition is promised to feature some of the best skiing in the world.

Join master potter, Laura Elm, in a six weeks course in clay that focuses on the wheel. While some handbuilding techniques will be included, students will primarily work on honing their throwing skills in this three-hour class. All levels are welcome, as Laura will teach begninner and experienced students individualized programs within the same class. There are only 6 spaces in this class, so reserve your spot early.

The third and final stage of this 3 stage tournament will be held on Blue Mesa Reservoir on Sat. Mar. 3, 2012 The event has been sponsored by Gunnison Chamber, Weekend Warrior Outdoors and Gene Taylor’s Sporting Goods. This 3rd Stage will be Cattle in a Pasture Series! Contestants will be limited to a pre-marked area. Contestants are allowed to measure 1 fish per hour with a limit of 4 trout all day. On Ice BBQ provided! Check in is at 6:00am at Pappy’s Restaurant and start time is 7:00am with weigh in by 3:00pm. OVERALL Champion based on combined points total for each of the 3 stages.

Mardi Gras is on! Join the community down Elk Avenue in Crested Butte for Mardi Gras 2012 in Crested Butte. The parade will include a bevy of krewes and floats. Rumor has it they’ll be breaking out the dragon.

If you’d like to be in the parade, please register your float/krewe at cbmardigras@gmail.com. Registration is free but necessary.

Parade stages at 4 pm at The Depot. Parade starts at 5:30 pm and marches west on Elk Avenue.

If you just want to enjoy the parade and share the Mardi Gras spirit, plant yourself in warm clothes along Elk!

Dick Eflin, the man, the myth, the legend, will be presenting a history of the Crested Butte Ski Area. Eflin and business partner, Fred Rice, purchased the Malensek ranch on Crested Butte Mountain in 1960, and the valley has been a mecca for skiers and snowboarders ever since.
