The Opening of Sand People | Vienna

Well, it was a grand evening! Thanks to all those who came to the opening of Sand People on June 14th. You made the night! We had a lot of fun and most of all, it was absolutely amazing to see Sand People up on the walls and to receive a wave of positive anticipation of the entire project.

When Andreas Waldschuetz and Adia Trischler worked out the concept for the Shoot in Namibia, it became evident that moving images were vital to capturing the story of the Sand People. Since Andreas has a strong background in film making, it was clear that a film would have to be produced in addition to the photo shoot.

To complete the project, ZANSHIN (musical talent, music producer for Ogris Debris, and half of performance art duo DEPART, also check out Myspace) was engaged to score the film, and a very special sound carpet was produced.

Kolmanskop

Sand People was shot in the Namibian ghost town Kolmanskop, just a few kilometres inland from the port town of Lüderitz.

The company town was developed after the discovery of diamonds in the area in 1908, to provide shelter for De Beers’ workers from the harsh environment of the Namibian Desert. The town was named after a transport driver called Johnny Coleman who, during a sand storm, abandoned his ox wagon on a small incline opposite the settlement. The village was built in the architectural style of a classic Dutch town of the time and included a hospital, ballroom, power station, school, skittle-alley, theatre and sports-hall, casino, ice factory, the first x-ray-station in the southern hemisphere, and the first tram in Africa. It also had a railway link to Lüderitz.

The town declined after World War I when diamond prices crashed – it has been abandoned since 1956.

The entire project could not have been done without the help of a fabulous team!

We would like to thank Adia Trischler: mum, model and a fantastic stylist who chose the perfect outfits for Carmen and Jeremy. With the help of gifted Make-Up Artist Steffi Lamm and the master of crazy hair-styles Patrick Glatthaar, our models were transformed into real SandPeople. Last but not least, the strenuous days in the desert, hardcore light situations and some difficult organisational problems could not have been tackled and successfully transformed into a positive outcome without the help of Merlin König and Thomas Rath.

The Photographer

Andreas Waldschuetz, born in Vienna 1976, experienced his first encounter with strong images during his chilldhood in the outskirts of the Austrian capital. The hood he grew up in was ruled by the street and there were many social issues he had to overcome when reaching out towards the city lights and the „inner circle“ of its creative scene. Though this was his goal – he was in his early twenties when he realised that he wanted to stretch beyond city and country boarders.

But, as there was no space for him in the rigid structures of university and schooling, and he did not fit in to the hierarchy system of a regular career, he set out to the world. After a two year stint in San Francisco, where he started his own film production company with a couple of friends, and slept on the office floor, he set out for Berlin and London, where he ended up meeting like-minded people that had a similar vision: to create strong images. And by striving to produce them, they didn’t want to limit themselves to just one medium, so film, photograpy, fashion, dance and words were given key roles in their overall oevre.

In 2006, Andreas returned to Vienna with the focus on conquering the world of images, backed-up by his home country. Through scoring national and international film and photo gigs, his defined goal is now to realise unusual concepts and produce strong and expressive imagery, sided by a professional team, a strong international network, and above all, determination.

is located in Vienna’s 15th district, not far from the well-known shopping street Mariahilferstrasse.
