If there were a perfect time to not eat vegetables, it would be now. Ju Duoqi would give you a compelling reason not to because she turns vegetables into art. Most of us play with our veggies on the plate. Ju goes beyond that and captures some of the world’s most famous paintings into works of art.

Everything has a spirit, each vegetable, each person, and each second, under careful observation, has extraordinary meaning. What makes me happy is that when I see Napoleon on his Potato, I can think back to when I fried him up and ate him at two in the morning in the summer of ’08. Through photographs, memory becomes sentiment. I never leave the house, and when I do I rarely travel more than 15 kilometers. In a studio, with a knife, a box of toothpicks and some vegetables, I can make small sculptures and slap together big scenes, using a woman’s most effortless and thrifty method of fantasizing about the larger world.-Ju Duoqi

As you prepare your daily ritual each day, the world spins with billions of other souls doing the same. Would it not be great to see what people on the other side of the globe are doing? Life in a Day is a cinematic experiment of human life in a day. People die each day and are born. Some laugh. Some cry. Kevin Macdonald and Ridley Scott are trying to capture the human experience in one movie where you are the star.

YouTube’s Life in a Day video gallery is now live at www.youtube.com/lifeinaday. The project is a historic global film experiment, directed by Kevin Macdonald and executive produced by Ridley Scott at Scott Free UK, that enlisted the world’s online community to capture a moment of their lives on Saturday, July 24. In total, more than 80,000 videos were submitted to the Life in a Day project, from 197 countries and in 45 languages, and users can now browse tens of thousands of these videos in the Life in a Day video gallery.

21st Century Enlightenment

Many of us are trying to fit in the fast growing society of plenty. Perhaps less is more in the 21st century. We should strip down our values and return back to the metaphoric garden a bit more often. It seems the journey might just be a bit too long for some. The RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) has broken down some ideas for the future for all of us to self examine our road to happiness in this swift changing world of technology. There is a place for everybody, you just have to find your purpose.

Matthew Taylor explores the meaning of 21st century enlightenment, how the idea might help us meet the challenges we face today, and the role that can be played by organizations such as the RSA.

The Flight of the Plastic Bag

Ever wonder where plastic bags fly to? No need to wonder. They are choking the Pacific Ocean with an artificial graveyard the size of Texas and growing each day.

This short film by American director Ramin Bahrani (Goodbye Solo) traces the epic, existential journey of a plastic bag (voiced by Werner Herzog) searching for its lost maker, the woman who took it home from the store and eventually discarded it. Along the way, it encounters strange creatures, experiences love in the sky, grieves the loss of its beloved maker, and tries to grasp its purpose in the world.
In the end, the wayward plastic bag wafts its way to the ocean, into the tides, and out into the Pacific Ocean trash vortex — a promised nirvana where it will settle among its own kind and gradually let the memories of its maker slip away.
