The World Cup is almost here, and the official match ball has gone from being a simple piece of sporting equipment to something that feels like it belongs in a science fiction movie.

The 2026 World Cup ball is no longer just a ball. Hidden inside is a sensor that tracks movement hundreds of times per second, feeding data to AI systems that help officials make offside calls, detect deflections, and analyze game-changing moments with incredible precision.

One of the most fascinating twists is that these high-tech balls are primarily manufactured at the Forward Sports factory in Sialkot, Pakistan, a country that has never qualified for a FIFA World Cup. Somehow, the nation that makes the ball still hasn’t had the chance to kick one on soccer’s biggest stage.

The internet immediately found the funniest part of the story. The official match ball contains electronics, which means it has to be charged. Give it about 90 minutes plugged in and you’ll get roughly six hours of battery life. That simple fact has inspired an endless stream of memes imagining referees frantically searching for an outlet before kickoff or teams delaying a match because somebody forgot to charge the ball.

Then there’s the price tag. Depending on where you buy it, the ball sells for around $170 to $175, which led fans to joke that the most valuable player on the field might actually be the microchip inside. Others pointed out an even bigger problem: if a player launches one of these into the crowd, there is absolutely no chance that the ball is making its way back onto the pitch.

At nearly two hundred bucks a pop, that souvenir is going home with somebody.

Dunkin’ is going all-in on pink this summer, and honestly, it feels like a collaboration that was probably destined to happen. Teaming up with Barbie, the coffee chain is launching the new Barbie Pink Strawberry Cold Foam, a limited-time topper that adds a bright pink finish and sweet, creamy strawberry flavor to a variety of cold drinks.

The partnership goes beyond what is in your cup. Dunkin’ has also released a fun stop-motion video featuring Barbie “Brooklyn” Roberts and Barbie “Malibu” Roberts coming to Ken’s rescue after he gets a little too obsessed with the new pink creation during a Dunkin’ run.

The Barbie Pink Strawberry Cold Foam can be added to several of Dunkin’s colorful summer drinks, including the Ultimate Pink Daydream Refresher, Double Strawberry Daydream Refresher, Pink Mango Daydream Refresher, Pink Cherry Daydream Refresher, Strawberry Cloud Matcha, Strawberries & Creme Cloud Dunkalatte, and the Almond Strawberry Shortcake Iced Coffee. If there is one thing clear from this menu, it is that pink is not just a color this summer. It is practically a beverage category.

Dunkin’ is also introducing the new Pink Pineapple Refresher, a light pink drink featuring pineapple, raspberry, and hibiscus flavors. Like other Refreshers, customers can customize their drink with different bases, including green tea, black tea, lemonade, oatmilk, protein milk, or sparkling water. Whether you prefer something creamy, tart, bubbly, or sweet, there are plenty of options to experiment with.

The pink takeover will not stop at the menu. Starting June 10, Dunkin’ will transform a Manhattan location into a Barbie DreamHouse-inspired experience. The New York City store will become a pink-themed destination throughout June where visitors can snap photos and enjoy the limited-time drinks in a setting that looks like it was pulled straight from Barbie’s world.

“Pink has always been part of Dunkin’s DNA, and this summer we’re taking it further than ever,” said Jill Nelson, Chief Marketing Officer at Dunkin’. She described the campaign as bold, fun, and unmistakably Dunkin’.

Mattel’s Mahta Eghbali echoed the excitement, noting that Barbie continues to bring together nostalgia, creativity, and connection across generations. The collaboration aims to turn an everyday coffee run into a playful summer ritual shared among friends.

For collectors and Barbie fans, there is also a little something extra. Beginning June 12, participating Dunkin’ locations will offer the Barbie Pink Pineapple Cup featured in the campaign, while supplies last.

If you happen to spot someone walking around with a bright pink drink this summer, there is a pretty good chance that Dunkin’ and Barbie had something to do with it. Between the pink foam, pink refreshers, pink cups, and a pink DreamHouse takeover, this may be one of the pinkest fast-food promotions we have seen in years.

I watched Five Easy Pieces when I was far too young to appreciate what I was seeing. Looking back, I have no idea why a movie like this would air right after a morning of Saturday cartoons. One minute you’re watching animated characters getting into harmless trouble, and the next you’re dropped into a film about dissatisfaction, identity, and people trying to outrun themselves.

Over the years, I’ve returned to Five Easy Pieces several times, and it has become one of those rare films that seems to mature alongside the viewer. Every time I watch it, I find something different. The meaning changes because life changes. Experiences accumulate, perspectives shift, and Bobby Dupea suddenly feels like a different person than he did during the last viewing.

I can’t help but compare Five Easy Pieces to The Graduate and Adam at 6 A.M. All three films are products of the New Hollywood era, and all three focus on men who seem trapped by expectations and uncertain about who they really are.

Released in 1970 and directed by Bob Rafelson, Five Easy Pieces became one of the defining films of the American New Wave. It also cemented Jack Nicholson as the antihero of a generation. Bobby Dupea isn’t particularly likable, but that’s exactly what makes him fascinating. He’s flawed, restless, selfish, and perpetually searching for something he can’t quite define.

What makes the film so important is how little it cares about conventional storytelling. Instead of driving relentlessly toward a destination, the movie focuses on behavior, conversations, awkward silences, and emotional undercurrents. It spends more time showing us who Bobby is than telling us where the story is going.

The film also explores class and identity in a way that still feels relevant today. Bobby is a gifted classical pianist who walks away from an upper-class upbringing and chooses life as a blue-collar oil worker. Yet no matter where he goes, he never feels comfortable. The movie understands that running away from your identity isn’t the same thing as changing it.

Then there’s the ending. Unlike traditional Hollywood films, Five Easy Pieces refuses to provide closure or easy answers. Its final moments remain haunting because they feel honest. Life doesn’t always wrap things up neatly, and neither does this movie.

Of course, the film’s most famous contribution to popular culture is the diner scene. Nicholson’s confrontation with the waitress over a simple food order has become legendary. On the surface, it’s funny, but underneath it’s about frustration, conformity, and the feeling of being trapped by arbitrary rules. Decades later, people still quote and reference it.

The performance also established a character type that would become common throughout the 1970s: the drifting, dissatisfied American male who keeps moving because staying put would force him to confront himself. Bobby’s tendency to leave before things get difficult became a blueprint for countless characters that followed.

When viewed alongside The Graduate (1967) and Adam at 6 A.M. (1970), the similarities become striking. Benjamin Braddock, Bobby Dupea, and Adam Gaines all come from educated or privileged backgrounds. They reject the futures that have been carefully laid out for them and search for meaning somewhere else.

Yet each discovers the same uncomfortable truth. Changing your surroundings doesn’t necessarily change what’s inside. Whether it’s an affair, an oil field, or a small-town logging community, the destination never fully cures the emptiness they carry with them.

That’s why these films continue to be impactful. They capture a generation’s uncertainty, but they also speak to something timeless. Most people, at one point or another, question the path they’re on and wonder whether fulfillment lies elsewhere.

At its core, Five Easy Pieces remains a film that rewards revisiting. Every viewing reveals something new. What seemed like rebellion in my younger years now feels more like sadness. What once felt cynical now feels surprisingly honest.

I own the bare-bones DVD version, and after revisiting the film, I think it’s finally worth upgrading. This Criterion edition looks like a worthwhile investment for anyone who appreciates one of the defining character studies of 1970s American cinema.

I pre-ordered Nancy For All Seasons months ago, and I have been looking forward to it ever since. The second volume in this outstanding series collecting Ernie Bushmiller‘s timeless and beloved Nancy is finally on the way. As Sluggo would say, who’s lit now?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Ernie Bushmiller is one of the most underrated cartoonists who ever lived. Nobody approached comics quite like he did. With the simplest of lines and the most straightforward setups, Bushmiller created a world that felt unique. He wasn’t trying to impress critics or reinvent literature. He just wanted to make people laugh, and he did it better than almost anyone.

What makes Bushmiller fascinating is that he often gets overlooked by mainstream critics and casual readers. Unlike contemporaries such as Charles Schulz with Peanuts or Walt Kelly with Pogo, Bushmiller had no interest in philosophy, political satire, or psychological depth. He famously said that Nancy had “no social message.” His goal was simple: deliver an immediate laugh.

Critics frequently dismissed Nancy as lowbrow, simplistic, or even dumb. Bushmiller didn’t care. He proudly described himself as a square and even called himself “the Lawrence Welk of cartoonists.” While the comic world embraced counterculture trends in the 1960s and 1970s, Bushmiller stayed firmly in his own lane. Nancy chased ice cream, Sluggo got into trouble, and the gags kept coming.

Yet that simplicity was exactly the point.

Nancy and Sluggo don’t have the emotional vulnerability of Charlie Brown or the social commentary of Pogo. Nancy is often sneaky, selfish, and motivated by whatever she wants at that particular moment. But that’s what makes the strip work. Bushmiller stripped cartooning down to its absolute essentials and built humor with the precision of an architect.

The funny thing is that while Bushmiller never achieved the cultural prestige of Schulz, he became something even more remarkable. He became a cartoonist’s cartoonist. Within the comics industry, he is practically worshipped. Artists study his timing, composition, staging, and economy of line. They know his work intimately, sometimes even more than they know the man himself.

And let’s not forget that Nancy is an American icon. She’s timeless. She’s practically a meme before memes existed. Andy Warhol painted her portrait. She appeared on a postage stamp. To this day, when you look up “comic strip” in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, the example shown is a Nancy strip by Bushmiller. As one cartoonist famously observed, “It’s easier to read a Nancy comic than it is to not read one.”

This new collection, Nancy For All Seasons, gathers more than 300 strips from 1951 and 1952. Alongside Bushmiller’s razor-sharp visual humor, readers get a fresh contemporary design that makes these classic comics feel as lively as ever.

Ultimately, Bushmiller traded temporary trendiness for something far more valuable: timelessness. His name may not carry the same household recognition as Charles Schulz, but his influence remains enormous. His architectural approach to humor continues to serve as a blueprint for cartoonists generations later.

That’s why I pre-ordered this book months ago. Bushmiller wasn’t chasing relevance. He was creating comics that would outlive the trends, and decades later, Nancy is still making people laugh.

I have been waiting for this.

The official trailer for season three of Silo is finally here, and I can honestly say this is my favorite television show right now. Very few series pull you into their world the way Silo does. Once you start watching, you’re completely immersed in its mysterious underground society. The episodes move at such a pace that binge-watching becomes almost unavoidable.

Season three continues the story of the 10,000 people living beneath the surface while also taking viewers back centuries earlier to reveal how this world came to exist in the first place.

In the present-day storyline, Juliette Nichols, played by Rebecca Ferguson, survives her forced cleaning but returns to the silo suffering from memory loss. As the community struggles to recover from rebellion, a new threat begins to emerge, raising the stakes even higher.

Meanwhile, the highly anticipated “Before Times” storyline follows journalist Helen Drew (Jessica Henwick) and Congressman Daniel Keene (Ashley Zukerman) as they uncover a conspiracy that sets off a chain of events with devastating consequences. For longtime fans of Hugh Howey’s bestselling novels, these flashbacks could finally provide some of the answers they’ve been waiting years to see.

The returning cast includes Common, Harriet Walter, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, Alexandria Riley, Shane McRae, Remmie Milner, Rick Gomez, Billy Postlethwaite, Clare Perkins, and Steve Zahn. New additions include Laura Innes, Jessica Brown Findlay, Morven Christie, Reed Birney, Matt Craven, and Colin Hanks in a recurring role.

The trailer looks incredible. The scale feels larger, the tension feels heavier, and the story appears to be moving toward the endgame. But while most fans are thrilled, one particular plot twist has sparked a heated debate.

Fans Are Divided Over Juliette’s Memory Loss

Do not kid yourself. Silo has one of the most dedicated fanbases on television. Many viewers have read Hugh Howey’s books multiple times, and they are quick to spot anything that differs from the source material.

The biggest talking point coming out of the trailer is Juliette’s apparent amnesia.

Fans are expressing concern that the storyline could become a frustrating distraction. Some viewers have labeled it a classic television trope and worry it could be used to artificially extend the narrative rather than move it forward.

The common hope is simple: if Juliette truly has memory loss, fans want the story resolved quickly. Many are already saying they do not want to spend half a season watching her recover memories while the larger mysteries remain on hold.

Of course, not everyone believes the trailer is telling the whole story.

One of the most popular theories suggests Juliette may actually be pretending to have amnesia. Fans speculate it could be a strategic move designed to protect herself, safeguard critical information, or deceive enemies who may be watching her every move.

A Major Change From Hugh Howey’s Books

Readers of Shift, the second novel in Hugh Howey’s trilogy, immediately noticed that this storyline appears to be a significant departure from the books.

In the original story, Juliette is largely absent for a considerable portion of the narrative. Some readers believe the television adaptation needed a way to keep Rebecca Ferguson front and center, and the amnesia plot may have been created to give her a larger role during events that unfold elsewhere in the novels.

Others argue the twist actually fits within the established mythology. Memory manipulation has always been part of the broader Silo universe, with drugs and chemicals capable of altering or suppressing memories playing a role in the books. From that perspective, the change may not be as dramatic as it first appears.

The “Before Times” Storyline Has Fans Hyped

If there is one thing nearly everyone agrees on, it is excitement for the dual-timeline approach.

The introduction of Helen Drew and Daniel Keene has generated enormous buzz because viewers will finally get to witness the origins of the silo world. Rather than slowing the story down, many fans believe these flashbacks could accelerate the pacing by delivering long-awaited answers while expanding the mythology in meaningful ways.

There is also confidence in where the series is headed. With season four officially announced as the final chapter, fans know the writers are working toward a defined conclusion rather than endlessly stretching the mystery.

That has created a sense of optimism that season three will be the beginning of a high-stakes sprint toward the truth.

The trailer promises bigger revelations, larger conflicts, and some of the most important answers the series has ever delivered.

Now fans are left wondering whether Juliette’s memory loss is a clever piece of misdirection or the one gamble that could derail an otherwise outstanding adaptation.

I am genuinely shocked by the news that Marjane Satrapi, the acclaimed author of Persepolis, has died at the age of 56. Around the world, people are sharing heartfelt tributes and memories of an artist whose work changed the way many of us viewed both graphic novels and modern Iran. According to her family, she died of “sadness” a little more than a year after the death of her husband, Mattias Ripa. It is a heartbreaking detail that feels almost too poetic, especially for someone whose stories explored love, loss, resilience, and the weight of memory.

This is such sad news. My heart feels a little heavier today.

Satrapi will forever be best known for Persepolis, her groundbreaking graphic memoir originally published in French between 2000 and 2003. Through its striking black-and-white artwork and deeply personal storytelling, she chronicled her childhood in Tehran during the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq War, as well as her years of exile in Europe. The book did more than tell her story. It transformed the graphic novel into a respected literary form and gave readers around the world a human and relatable window into Iranian life.

With tensions in Iran continuing to dominate headlines, her work feels more relevant than ever. The world could use a little hope right now. Instead, we are saying goodbye to one of the voices that helped us understand one another.

Following the success of Persepolis, Satrapi expanded her creative reach into filmmaking. She directed Chicken with Plums in 2011, the dark comedy The Voices starring Ryan Reynolds in 2014, and Radioactive in 2019, a biographical drama about Marie Curie starring Rosamund Pike. She brought the same fearlessness and artistic vision to film that she brought to the page.

Politicians, artists, and human rights organizations are honoring her as a fearless advocate for democracy, freedom of expression, and women’s rights. She spent years speaking out against oppression while reminding the world that ordinary Iranians are far more complex and diverse than political headlines suggest. Her support for the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement inspired countless people around the globe.

One of her final major projects was Woman, Life, Freedom. This collaborative graphic anthology brought together more than 20 artists, activists, and academics to document the historic uprising that followed the death of Mahsa Amini. It was a powerful reminder that art can be both a witness and a weapon against injustice.

Marjane Satrapi’s enduring legacy is her remarkable ability to combine dark humour, raw vulnerability, and bold artistic simplicity to make complex geopolitical conflicts deeply human. She never stopped reminding us that behind every headline are real people, real families, and real stories.

She will be missed.

And perhaps the greatest tribute we can offer is to continue doing what she did so brilliantly: speaking out, telling stories, and refusing to be silenced.

I actually own the original The Making of Space: 1999 paperback that was published in 1976. It has been one of the few substantial books available about the classic science fiction series in North America. For years, Space: 1999 fans have had limited options when it comes to behind-the-scenes books, which is a real shame considering the show’s enduring popularity and influence on television science fiction.

Originally written by author, biographer, and journalist Tim Heald, the 1976 paperback offered readers a unique fly-on-the-wall look at the production of the series. At the time, Heald was granted unprecedented access to the cast and crew as the show entered production on its second season. His book gave fans a fascinating glimpse behind the curtain while the series was still fresh on television screens.

Now, nearly fifty years later, that original work has been transformed into something much bigger.

All Sections Alpha: The Making of Space: 1999 is a fully updated, revised, and expanded 50th Anniversary Edition. While Heald’s original book focused primarily on Year Two of the series, co-writer Fred McNamara has greatly expanded the scope of the project. Two of my favorite movie soundtracks come from Clint Eastwood films, and both were scored by the legendary Lalo Schifrin, the same musical genius who gave us the unforgettable Mission: Impossible Theme.

Schifrin first teamed up with Eastwood on Coogan’s Bluff, directed by Don Siegel. It was the beginning of a creative partnership that would later give us Dirty Harry, but this first collaboration is every bit as fascinating. The score blends Western flavors with late-1960s pop, rock, and blues influences, creating a sound that feels both modern and rooted in Eastwood’s cowboy persona. It’s one of those soundtracks that immediately transports you to a particular place and time.

One of the most entertaining pieces from the score is “Pigeon-Toed Orange Peel,” performed by the fictional band The Pigeon-Toed Orange Peels. The song was intentionally created as a spoof of the flower-power era. Schifrin composed the music while Wally Holmes wrote the lyrics, and together they crafted a playful parody of the psychedelic garage bands and underground hippie culture that seemed to be everywhere in the late 1960s. The result is incredibly catchy while being just silly enough to make you smile. It works perfectly in the film’s discotheque party scene and today feels like a wonderful time capsule from another era.

Of course, Schifrin’s collaboration with Eastwood would reach even greater heights with Dirty Harry. Widely considered one of his greatest achievements, the score is built around edgy urban jazz-funk rhythms, dark textures, and a sense of unease that never lets go. Critics such as Pauline Kael praised the music’s ability to drive the film forward and create relentless tension. Fans often point out that the score is so deeply woven into the movie’s DNA that it almost feels like another character on screen.

What makes the soundtrack so effective is its restraint. Rather than drowning the film in bombastic orchestral flourishes, Schifrin kept the arrangements intimate and confident, giving his musicians room to improvise and breathe. The result is a score that feels alive.

Dirty Harry is one of those albums I never get tired of revisiting. Schifrin created a gritty urban sound built around electric bass, fuzz guitars, jazz improvisation, and suspenseful rock grooves that perfectly capture Harry Callahan’s hard-edged, take-no-prisoners attitude.

Two tracks always stand out for me. The various versions of “Scorpio’s View” are wonderfully unsettling, while “The Strip Club” is so catchy that it almost steals the show. What makes that song especially interesting is that Schifrin didn’t write it as ordinary background music. He recorded a full vocal version specifically for the film. When Harry Callahan wanders through a seedy strip club searching for the Scorpio killer, the song plays as if it’s coming from the club itself. The soulful vocals, heavy blues groove, and smoky atmosphere make the scene feel authentic, like you’ve stepped into a real early-1970s nightclub. It’s sleazy, raw, and absolutely perfect for the setting.

What I love most about both soundtracks is that Schifrin was never afraid to experiment. When I was young, one of my favourite books was Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. I would spend hours getting lost in the stories and staring at the incredible illustrations by Steele Savage. Now and then, though, I would stumble across something even stranger on television: a little cartoon called Luno the White Stallion.

The premise felt like pure childhood wish fulfillment. A small marble Pegasus sitting innocently in a boy’s bedroom could suddenly come to life. Not just any winged horse, either. Luno could talk. Imagine being a kid and secretly flying around the world on a magical horse while your parents had absolutely no idea where you were. It was the ultimate fantasy.

Created by Terrytoons in 1963, Luno the White Stallion had a surprisingly short run, yet it quietly helped lay the groundwork for many children’s adventure cartoons that followed.

The series followed a highly imaginative boy named Tim, who owned a white marble statue of a winged horse called Luno. Whenever Tim wanted an adventure, he would raise his hands and recite the magic words:

“Oh, winged horse of marble white, take me on a magic flight!”

Instantly, the toy transformed into a giant living Pegasus. Together, Tim and Luno would soar out the bedroom window and into fantastic adventures. They travelled across oceans, visited prehistoric worlds, explored legendary kingdoms, and crossed paths with characters such as Sinbad the Sailor, Captain Ahab, and King Rounder.

What makes Luno fascinating today is how ahead of its time it was.

Long before modern cartoons embraced magical companions, Luno introduced the idea of an ordinary child using a special object to summon a powerful friend and escape into incredible adventures. You can see echoes of that formula in everything from Masters of the Universe to The Fairly OddParents and countless anime series.

The show also arrived during a major turning point in animation history. Only six episodes were originally produced for theatrical release. The remaining eleven were shifted directly to television, where they appeared as backup segments on programs like The Astronut Show and Deputy Dawg. In many ways, Luno sits right on the dividing line between the golden age of theatrical cartoons and the rise of Saturday morning television.

So why does almost nobody remember it?

Part of the answer is Terrytoons itself. The studio had a reputation for keeping production costs low, and Luno often showed it. The animation was limited, the stories could be chaotic, and it simply could not compete visually with what Disney or Hanna-Barbera were producing at the time.

Then there is the simple fact that only seventeen episodes were ever made. That is not much material to build a lasting audience, especially in an era when successful cartoons relied heavily on reruns and syndication.

Fortunately, the internet has given Luno a second chance. Thanks to collectors and animation fans uploading episodes to YouTube, this forgotten flying horse is still finding new audiences more than sixty years later. Watching it today is like opening a time capsule from an era when children’s television was still figuring out what it wanted to be.

It throws you into a world of chain gangs, racism, violence, and hard-earned resilience, all held together by the power of music. Decades after its release, it remains a film that lingers in your mind long after the screen goes dark.

What makes its arrival even more remarkable is that Hollywood released another major folk music biopic that same year, Bound for Glory, based on the life of Woody Guthrie. Looking back, the two films feel like snapshots from a brief period when studios were willing to tell stories about working-class heroes, wandering musicians, and the struggles that shaped America’s musical identity. While neither became a box office sensation, both captured something authentic about the people who sang for those often left unheard.

Roger E. Mosley, known to many from Magnum, P.I., gives a commanding performance as Lead Belly. Under Parks’ direction, the film follows Ledbetter’s journey from prison inmate to musical icon. Guthrie also believed that simplicity was the highest form of artistry, once saying, “Any fool can make something complicated. Perhaps Guthrie’s greatest compliment was calling Lead Belly “the most important folk singer of the twentieth century.” Coming from one of America’s most influential songwriters, that praise speaks volumes. Ironically, both Leadbelly and Bound for Glory struggled financially despite earning critical respect. What remains are two remarkable films that celebrate artists who transformed hardship into art.

I had an absolute blast with season one of X-Men ’97, and after watching the new trailer for season two, I am fully locked in all over again. This thing looks completely insane in the best possible way. The time-travel chaos, the giant emotional stakes, the gorgeous animation, and all the deep-cut comic book references are exactly why this revival works so well. It feels like the creators understand the soul of the original 90s cartoon instead of trying to awkwardly bend it into another setup piece for the Marvel movie machine. They are embracing the weirdness, the melodrama, the soap opera energy, and the over-the-top comic book madness that made the animated series legendary in the first place.

The line everybody is already quoting is Apocalypse growling, “I must strike the X-Men at their most vulnerable… the 1990s!” and honestly, I burst out laughing the first time I heard it. It is so gloriously campy and self-aware while still sounding completely serious inside the world of the show. That balancing act is incredibly hard to pull off, but this series somehow nails it. The internet immediately turned it into a meme because it sounds exactly like something the original animated Apocalypse would say while standing in front of exploding lightning and giant floating pyramids.

Visually, the trailer looks stunning. I was thrilled to see bigger roles for Polaris, Psylocke, Archangel, and Exodus. Fans are already wondering whether Magik could end up becoming one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen after those shots of Colossus seemingly mourning her. If they go down that road, things could get very dark very fast.

One thing sparking debate online is Apocalypse’s voice. Some longtime fans noticed it sounds a little different compared to the original animated series. Personally, I do not think it is a huge deal, especially with all the timeline and multiverse weirdness already happening, but it has definitely become one of the big discussion topics among hardcore fans.

The biggest compliment I can give this trailer is that it feels unapologetically like X-Men. Big emotions. Big speeches. Ridiculous comic book concepts treated with absolute sincerity. Time travel. Apocalypse. Leather jackets. Tragic romance. Giant mutant drama. This is exactly the kind of glorious Saturday morning chaos I wanted from season two, and July 1 cannot get here fast enough.

There is something wonderfully ridiculous about seeing Weird Al Yankovic sitting at a keyboard made out of actual bananas. Honestly, it feels like the exact kind of chaotic energy the world needs right now. To launch his Bigger & Weirder Tour, Al dropped a social media video where he plugs a bunch of bananas into a tiny synthesizer kit and starts playing music directly off the fruit itself. Yes, real bananas. Every tap on the peel creates a note, turning produce into performance art. Then, because this is Weird Al and subtlety has never been the point, he completely obliterates the bananas at the end. The whole thing is gloriously stupid in the best possible way. I have to admit, the tune itself was pretty “a-peel-ing,” and the ending? Total smashing hit.

The internet immediately ran wild with it. Since his name is Al, people started joking that they want “less AI music and more Al music,” which honestly might be one of the funniest accidental marketing slogans of the year. Others called the clip the best kind of “AI-generated content,” even though the only intelligence involved was a man electronically assaulting fruit for comedy. What makes it even funnier is how bananas have spent almost a century becoming shorthand for total nonsense. Back in the 1920s, flappers were already using the term “banana oil” to mean pure nonsense. Old comic strips like Li’l Abner helped push that goofy association even further into pop culture. Eventually, bananas stopped being just fruit and became a symbol for silliness itself.

There are even darker slang roots tied to the word. In underworld slang during the 1930s, the word “bent” described somebody crooked or unstable. Since bananas are literally bent, the fruit started becoming slang for people acting crazy or out of control. Then the 1960s arrived and everything got even weirder. College campuses became obsessed with the urban legend that smoking dried banana peels could supposedly make you hallucinate. Science debunked it pretty quickly, but by then the damage was done. Bananas were permanently linked to weirdness, altered states, and counterculture nonsense.

And honestly, the word itself just sounds funny. “Banana” has this bouncy cartoon rhythm to it. You can practically hear a clown slipping on one just by saying it out loud. Old vaudeville routines, slapstick comedy, and cartoon gags turned banana peels into universal symbols of chaos. That is exactly why the fruit fits Weird Al so perfectly. He has built an entire career out of turning absurdity into art.

Which brings us to another legendary banana in pop culture history. When Andy Warhol designed the debut album cover for The Velvet Underground, he chose a banana because it was provocative, funny, strange, and impossible to ignore. The original album sleeve famously featured a peelable banana sticker with the instructions “Peel slowly and see.” Underneath was a flesh-colored fruit, turning the album cover itself into interactive Pop Art. Warhol understood that a banana could instantly communicate rebellion, absurdity, sexuality, and counterculture all at once. It was Pop Art reduced to one ridiculous yellow object.

So yes, the world really is bananas. And somehow, from Weird Al Yankovic smashing fruit synthesizers to Andy Warhol turning produce into avant-garde art, bananas have managed to become one of the strangest recurring symbols in pop culture history.

Grendizer is one of those rare anime properties that quietly changed the world without always getting the credit it deserved. Created by Go Nagai, the series completely reshaped the mecha genre and helped push Japanese animation into global pop culture long before anime became mainstream in North America. While Japan initially treated it as more of a continuation of the Mazinger universe, the rest of the world absolutely embraced it. In France and French Canada, where it was known as Goldorak, and in Italy as Goldrake, the series exploded into a full-blown cultural phenomenon. Kids were obsessed with it. The theme songs topped charts, comic adaptations flooded Europe, and for many viewers, this was their very first exposure to Japanese animation.

Now Titan Comics is bringing the French continuation to English readers with a four-part comic mini-series based on the original anime continuity. Written by acclaimed French comic creator Xavier Dorison and brought to life by artists Denis Bajram, Brice Cossu, Alexis Sentenac, and Yoann Guillo, the oversized first issue feels less like nostalgia bait and more like a true continuation of a legendary story. I read the book and honestly came away excited. It captures the spirit of the original while giving everything a modern cinematic edge that longtime fans are going to appreciate.

What always made Grendizer stand out for me was the tone. Compared to a lot of giant robot cartoons of the era, this series felt heavier and more emotional. Duke Fleed was not some invincible superhero with a grin plastered across his face every episode. He carried trauma, guilt, loneliness, and the burden of losing his home planet. The newer comic adaptations really lean into that vulnerability, and the high-quality illustrations give the entire story a gritty cinematic feel that works perfectly for the character. You can feel the scars of war all over the pages.

Grendizer became one of the core series featured in the Force Five syndicated anthology during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Seeing an Arabic-dubbed modern Grendizer series in 2026 honestly says everything about the franchise’s global reach.

The Sunday comics really took a beating in the 21st century, and honestly, I think a lot of people saw it coming long before newspapers wanted to admit it. Once the newspaper business started collapsing, the comics pages got squeezed to death. The giant colorful sections that once felt like an event every Sunday morning slowly became tiny, cramped boxes buried between ads, coupons, and store flyers. The pages got smaller, the panels got tighter, and a lot of the magic disappeared with it.

Meanwhile, the internet showed up and completely changed how people consume entertainment. Webcomics, Instagram artists, independent creators, and digital platforms became the new comics section almost overnight. The old print pages may be fading into history, but comics themselves are absolutely thriving. They just escaped the newspaper before the ship fully sank.

Patrick McDonnell said something back in 2003 that always stuck with me because it perfectly explains what was lost. We are talking billions over time. But here is the thing I admire most. He still won. He retained ownership, sold over 45 million books, became wealthy anyway, and kept the strip untouched. No watered-down spin-offs. No corporate dilution. No endless branding campaigns. Just the work itself preserved exactly how he intended it.

That is why both Schulz and Watterson remain legends to me. One embraced commercialization and built one of the biggest licensing empires in entertainment history. The other rejected it almost entirely to protect the purity of the art. Opposite philosophies, yet somehow both left behind timeless legacies.

To Trudeau, Snoopy represents the ultimate American dreamer, a character who constantly escapes ordinary life through imagination, fantasy, and pure determination. Even when his adventures crash back to reality, Snoopy never stops reinventing himself. That endless optimism and ability to transcend his surroundings is what Trudeau calls part of the character’s magic.

There is a creative thread that quietly connects Garry Trudeau and Charles Schulz, and it runs straight through the world of enduring comic-strip icons like Snoopy. In his reflections, Trudeau has often pointed out that his own slacker character, Zonker Harris, functions as a kind of Doonesbury-era equivalent to Snoopy. Both characters share that rare “forever young” quality; they do not age, they do not fully evolve into adulthood, and they exist slightly outside the pressure of the real world. My characters often declared who they thought they were, no matter how at variance it was with who they revealed themselves to be. The laughs lay in the contradictions.

Trudeau admits Snoopy had a direct influence on his own work in Doonesbury. He especially admired the way Snoopy would announce his alter egos with lines like “Here’s the world-famous…” before launching into another fantasy. Trudeau borrowed that same self-narration technique for his own characters, allowing them to declare who they believed themselves to be, while the humor often came from the reality of who they actually turned out to be.
