While the definition of a sandbox is a square of wood set close to the ground that the kids can sit in, generally tables on legs that contain sand are considered as the same type of product. In both instances, whether it’s a box or a table, as long as it contains sand it’s a source of fun for kids.

Many of us choose the type of sandbox according to the space we have. A table that has a small footprint is ideal for a small space. It has the advantage of being easily moved if need be. Since a sand table is often divided into sections then 3 or 4 kids at a time can happily use it without squabbling over space. If you have a large backyard, then a traditional sandbox can be a permanent fixture in it. It’s ideal in particular for smaller children who are still at the falling over a lot stage! It’s also great for keeping several kids amused at once.

Another thing to consider before you buy sandboxes for kids is the suitability for certain types of play. A table, for instance, may be better if you want to incorporate water as you can fill one of the sections with water instead of sand. You can buy sand tables that are specifically designed to be used for sand and water play. It’s easier to dry out a sand table afterwards.

One thing I’d recommend whatever the type of sandbox is a lid. This helps to keep the sand clean, by keeping out rain, bugs or animals like cats. It needs to be a sturdy lid or you may find, as I did, that strong winds can blow it off and wreck it.

Another thing you might want to consider is getting a sandbox with sun protection. Many now come with umbrellas or canopies attached to provide shade, and in some instances UV protection within the shading, to keep kids safe from sun damage while they play.

There is a downside to sandboxes, and that’s the amount of sand that ends up in a kid’s hair and clothing! But given the fun and enjoyment a sandbox provides, it’s worth a little bit of extra cleaning up!
