SD "Peony for your thoughts" fabric Panel - available as archival limited editions prints or fabric panels in single or any combination of I,II,III.

Peonies, with a history of some 4000 years, embody romance and prosperity and are regarded as an omen of good fortune and happiness. Symbolically they represent these and many other things including peace, health and abundance. They are also often used as a metaphor of feminine beauty.

Also as seen in the texture of my images, birds, just like flower symbols, have an intrinsic universal energy. Humans have looked at birds since times immemorial for the feeling of inspiration, freedom, and a longing for being united with a divine. The ability to fly and soar high up in the sky is closely associated with the ability to be near ‘heavens’, as well as the ability to serve as messengers.

In these series of images, with my renowned signature of layers and textures, I have also added a 'SD style Vintage treatment' , adding to the romance and intrigue of these ancient beauties.

This series of images are available separately or any combination of two and three, on archival rag paper{matt or pearl} as limited edition prints. {price varies depending on size, starting @ $50.00 ea} Also available as fabric panels (details below)

Grevillea and Bird - New SD Fabric Design

It is now 11 days into January 2012, and Summer has finally found us here in Brisbane. Hot, steamy days give us little other choice then to laze around in a comfy chair or hammock, or waterside and marvel at the amazing contrasts of what a difference a week can make to the seasons.

Has anyone else noticed the amazing sunsets of late? Skies so pretty with pinks and purples, and a welcome site for the eyes as our souls take a sigh that the hot day is on its way to sleep, even the birds and other creatures seems to appreciate it's splendour.

This is my first design for 2012 - Grevillea and Bird.

I can just see this in a gorgeous Organic Cotton Sateen - made skillfully into a "oh so hot hot hot hot" right now pencil skirt and little matching cropped jacket.

Let your imagination take over! Let you mind construct the possibilities as we watch the glow of our glorious summer sunsets and botanical wilderness.

Cloudland is embracing the great Sunday afternoon leisure activity "High Tea", and like her namesake, the newest additional function room is a picture of old-world charm with a distinctive modern edge.
Having a High Tea in the valley's very own urban oasis is a match made in party heaven, and to make it a little richer and more interactive, Cloudland have combined champange, delicate cakes, and, fabulous, edgy fashion to the menu!

Romantic By Nature - a Haute Couture Collection - Sandra Darling & Jennifer Gifford

Through a collaboration of artist and designer, Sandra Darling Visual Art Creations and Jennifer Gifford Designs combined their expertise to produce a one-of-a-kind collection that takes Sandra's images from wall to wear.

By exploring the fluidity of textile design, the pair showcased Sandra's fabric designs through the excitement and glamour of a Haute Couture Collection entitled "Romantic by Nature".

Sandra's work consists of images rich in layers and textures which are influenced by the geographical and social tapestry of the landscape. Reflective in nature, her work has a connection to memory and experience, whilst referencing the powerful forces of nature and the fragility of our environment and human existence.

Designer Jennifer, also a lover of feminine, romantic & stylish high fashion, joined forces with Sandra to bring you fashion with a new edge.

When collaborating on designs, Sandra & Jennifer let the individual art work through fabric design, speak to them to created new art through fashion.

This project would not have been possible if it were not for the support of others who are acknowledged in the film credits. We would like to take this opportunity to sincerely give many thanks to all those involved.

We spend all our life growing up trying to leave home and then spend the rest of our lives trying to get back to it.

Growing up on the coast of Queensland I had the best of both worlds. The coastline with beaches, oceans and islands and then the lush tropical sun kissed landscape of the North. It is the things your childhood dreams are made of.

A good part of my childhood was spent holidaying and travelling with my family up and down the coast of Queensland visiting family and forming an attachment to what made a house a home. I remember as much as I was excited with my adventures and in particular visiting other people’s homes and the wonderment of being in the old homes of my grandparents, aunts and uncles, that I was also so pleased to come home to that place of familiarity and comfort. Therefore, many of my vivid memories are in and around the home and places of ‘home’. Old Queenslanders with their distinct and unique tin and timber structures high on stilts designed for coolness (as well as to accommodate the rise and fall of localised flooding) is prevalent in my memory of connectedness to “home”, as to is my connection and memories of play be it in the backyard, or surrounding countryside and coastline.

The ache for our place, our ‘home’, lives within all of us, irrespective of where that place may be. This series of images explore this, as well as reflection on the in-between transitions throughout our lives, journeys to new places and stages of our life where we reflect on our longing and memory of our home, the safe place where we can go, as we are, and not be questioned. Our place of peace and sanctuary.

In this exhibition I will not only be presenting my art by a 2D medium, but through a collaboration with a local fashion designer, Jennifer Gifford, we are taking images from “Wall to Wear”.

As part of this a selected group exhibition - I am currently exhibiting my Triptych series "My Sky is Torn" and a Diptych "Below/Above an Awakened Surface.

The inspiration for this series of works came from admiration of the vastness of the skies above, on a day when I recently visited the ocean. Full of ever-changing clouds formations and colours my imagination was ignited as the energy of nature ran through me. For many years throughout history, culture and art, the skies and their clouds have acted as a symbol of the ethereal heights of heaven and represented the quality of higher truth. Whatever you beliefs, one thing is for sure. Clouds are symbols of change. Clouds constantly come and go, and they tend to move fast. They also reflect, evoke and personify human emotion with their ever-changing moods, colour, form and movement. We all have memories of looking up to the skies with clouds and tapping into our subconscious, either imagining what shapes the clouds are forming, or being in awe of the powers and mystery of mother nature. From magnificent formations where you literally can hear a beautiful piece of classical music playing in your mind or experiencing goosebumps from the powerful forces of nature as storms brewed, formed, delivered and then cleared. Perhaps, like me you have spent many a hour pondering the meaning of life and solving the problems of your world whilst gazing to the heavens. The ever-changing skies a personified mirror reflecting human emotion and our ever-changing ephemeral being. It is therefore apt, that this subject matter was chosen to deliver my story for this series "My Sky is Torn". From a dark, 'noir' and dramatic place in the first image through to the colourful red and theatrical skies of image two, and then onto the blue skies with the clouds starting to part in image three, you are taken on a transitional journey of emotional turmoil and transformation, to one of change and eventually hope. The storm is moving away and there is hope and promise of a light filled future beyond the torn sky.

These images explore the idea of the awakening of an inner world deep below the surface, a stirring of the surface, self realisation and new beginnings.As it stands, nothing ever stays the same. Often we exist under the guise of darkness or a masked surface that keeps our true inner being hidden from view. These images evoke to an upward rise of this world where connotations of a rich and complex life has percolated beneath the surface and a hidden inner psyche has awakened.The ocean, with its ebb and flow of tide, the sky with its mysterious, evocative cloud formations, the blossoming wallpaper swirls of organic life form, the moth wakening from its nocturnal dark chrysalis to discover a new horizon, the etched brail like poetry left upon the icy surface – all revealing the hidden life that had laid under the foil of a hidden darkness.These symbolic vehicles all tell of the story of a journey and awakening of an inner ephemeral being that no longer has to loom beneath the surface.

I would like to share with you new art works from a series I have entitled "Whimsical Irony". They are part of an exhibition entitled "Size Matters" at the gallery space "The SWICH Contemporary Art Space" featuring small works from a selection of artists from Ipswich, Brisbane and Melbourne.

This series of work “Whimsical Irony” was developed around the notion that although whimsical and reflective in nature; the use of metaphors, such as the ones represented in these images, are often an ironic reflection of something of a rather more serious nature that has or is occurring in one’s life.

The intensity of emotion experienced from such experiences including loss, disagreement, loneliness and a sense of devastation is often combated, either at the time or sometime after, with a more philosophical and light hearted reflection on these experiences. Consequently these images explore aspects of human nature, reflection of experiences and an optimistic approach to these experiences.

Many of us have an inbuilt “where to from here approach” that form part of our survival from life’s experiences, the “what have we learnt from our experience” and the “what good has come from an otherwise no so good situation”. The gamut of human emotions is a complex and large subject matter, however in these images I touch on some of the more whimsical or poetic emotions such as fragility, melancholy and optimism.

The images are available as limited editions of 50.
