Russafa Book Weekend 2014 #RBW

RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14, un evento en torno al libro, tuvo lugar los días 17, 18 y 19 de octubre en Ruzafa Gallery (Pedro III el Grande, 11, Valencia), así como en ocho librerías del barrio. El objetivo de RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14 fue dar visibilidad a aquellas librerías, editoriales y publicaciones valencianas que apuestan por la singularidad y la calidad en todas sus facetas.

Y allí estuvo APIV con un stand donde sus socios pudimos poner a la venta nuestro material. Gracias a Francisco Salcedo, yo también pude estar "presente" en forma de zines, postales y chapas.

RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14, an event about books, took place on 17th, 18th and 19th of October at Ruzafa Gallery (Pedro III el Grande, Valencia, Spain) as well as at eight other local bookshoops. RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14's goal was to draw attention to those Valencian bookshops, publishers and publications which choose uniqueness and quality in every aspect.

And there it was APIV with a stall where their members could sell our artwork. Thanks to Francisco Salcedo, I could also be "present" in the form of zines, postcards and badges.

Desde noviembre he estado trabajando como voluntaria una vez por semana en el Shepreth Wildlife Park tratando con animalitos adorables y personas encantadoras. De unas semanas a esta parte, he cambiado de sección y ayudo en lo que puedo dentro del centro de educación. Estas dos últimas semanas se ha celebrado en Cambridge el Science Festival y, con este motivo, me pidieron que realizara unas ilustraciones para colorear en un taller de dibujo para niños basado en "Patrones y Estructuras" animales.

Ever since November, I've been volunteering at Shepreth Wildlife Park surrounded by lovely animals and charming people. I changed sections recently and now I help with anything I can at the education centre. The Cambridge Science Festival was celebrated over these last couple of weeks and for this reason I was asked to make some colouring illustrations for a children's drawing workshop around animal "Patterns and Structure".

En este número 2, la ciudad es nuestro telón de fondo para construir nuevas ilustraciones e historias que intenten haceros sentir esas sensaciones que sólo ese monstruo llamado “ciudad” puede conseguir”.

Given our first issue subject was "Origin", in order to evolve from that starting point we've had a look at our ecosystem, our worn out tyre fauna, our concrete flora. Este año la clase de cerámica está dando más frutos que el anterior y estoy bastante contenta con lo que está saliendo... de momento. Esto es un comedero para pájaros hecho con arcilla rakú, bañado en esmalte blanco con detalles pintados con óxido.

The pottery class is bearing more fruits this year and I'm quite happy with what I'm making... for now. This is a stoneware bird feeder made with raku clay, dipped in white glaze, with a couple of details painted with oxide.

Raquel es una chica muy bonica, madrileña de nacimiento, valenciana de corazón y, sobre todo, mamá desde hace dos añitos. De hecho, fue a raíz de tener a su BB que comenzó su blog CUANDO LOS SUEÑOS DESPIERTAN para hablar libremente de las cosas buenas y las no tan buenas de cuidar de su pequeñajillo, además de compartir recetas, viajes, experiencias, etc.

Hace unos pocos días, su blog estrenó diseño y, para celebrarlo, ha organizado un sorteo que tiene una pinta excelente y en el que tengo el honor de participar. ¡Animáos a participar, que es muy sencillo y los premios son una cucada!

Técnica decorativa para cerámica // Decorating pottery technique

El otro día también pude recoger de clase de cerámica un azulejo que hice simplemente para probar una técnica decorativa.

Ésta consiste en pintar completamente la pieza cuando todavía está húmeda con engobe de color y, tras esperar a que seque muy ligeramente, usar una gubia para crear el diseño como si estuviéramos preparando una plancha de linóleo para grabado. Supongo que podríamos decir que es una especie de técnica de esgrafiado. Después de la primera cocción, se baña en esmalte transparente, se vuelve a cocer et voilà! Yo creo que el resultado es bien majo, ¿no?

Ahora estoy preparando un plato grande que decorar de la misma manera. Espero tenerlo listo prontito.

Last week in pottery class, I finally finished a tile that I made just to test a decorating technique.

The thing is, you paint the piece completely with decorating pottery slip while it's still wet and, after waiting for it to dry just a bit, you take a gouge and create the design just as if you were preparing a linoleum sheet for engraving. I guess we could say it's a kind of scraffito technique. After the biscuit firing, you dip it in clear glaze, stoneware-fire it et voilà! I reckon the result is quite attractive, isn't it?

I'm currently modelling a big plate which I'll decorate in the same way. I hope I have it finished soon.

Esta es una de las últimas piezas que he podido terminar en las clases de cerámica sin que el resultado sea demasiado avergonzante. No sé si la usaré para beber, de todas maneras.

This is one of the last pieces I could finish at the pottery class without the result being too embarrasing. I'm not sure if I'll use it for drinking, though.

Estoy planeando algo que, si los dioses me dan su beneplácito, empezará a ver la luz un poco antes de primavera. Los primeros en ver los cambios serán este blog y mi web. Poco a poco iré actualizando, pero por el momento, prefiero esperar y crear un poco de suspense, que nunca viene mal.

El invierno ya lleva por estas tierras unas cuantas semanas... al menos lo que mi organismo mediterráneo considera invierno, y con este tiempo no me apetece mucho más que hacerme una bola en el sofá, enfundarme en una mantita y coger un libro o ver una peli al calor calentito de la estufita. Ahora mismo estoy con "Choque de Reyes", de George R. R. Martin, y cada vez que alguien repite la sobada frase de "Se acerca el invierno", siento ganas de gritar: "¡Ya lo noto! ¡Cállate ya!"

I'm up to something which, if the gods consent, will start to see the light sometime before Spring. This blog and my website will be the first to see some changes. I'll keep you updated every so often, but I'd rather wait for now. A little suspense never killed anyone.

Winter already got here some weeks ago... at least what my Mediterranean organism considers Winter. And with this kind of weather, I just feel like curling up on the sofa all wrapped up in a blanket and read a book or watch a film with the heater on. Right now I'm reading "A Clash of Kings" by George R. R. Martin and every time somebody repeats the oh-so-kneaded "Winter is coming" thingy, I just want to yell: "I know! Just shut the f*** up already!".

Hace unos años no me hacía gracia la tradición de Halloween, a pesar de incluir disfraces de mis personajes preferidos, porque la consideraba una "americanada" (gracias, Moderna de Pueblo). Sin embargo, con el tiempo he ido aceptándola más, creo que principalmente porque los disfraces (y más si son de monstruos) me pierden - durante mi Erasmus en Southampton pude ser Alex DeLarge, de vuelta en Valencia me disfracé de "crisis", en Londres mi señor marido y yo nos vestimos de 3D... Además, tampoco es tan "americanada", puesto que tiene su origen aquí, en Reino Unido, donde llevo viviendo ya más de 2 años. Así que este año he sucumbido a los encantos de Halloween y he acabado haciendo una felicitación :)

Pasadlo muy bien esta noche si salís, no seáis muy gamberros,

pero ¡dad mucho miedo!

Some years ago I didn't quite like the Halloween tradition despite it featuring costumes of my favourite characters just because I thought it was "too American" (thanks, Moderna de Pueblo). However, as time went by I kind of accepted it more and more... I guess because I just love to dress up (even more so when there is horror involved) - during my Erasmus year in Southampton I could be Alex DeLarge, back in Valencia I dressed up as "crisis", Husband and I impersonated 3D in London... Moreover, it's not such an American thing after all since it really originated here in the UK, where I've been living for more than 2 years now. So, it was about time I succumbed to Halloween and made a greeting :)

Tras un verano sin parar quieta (visitas, barbacoas, viajes de Luna de Miel a Islandia...) ¡he vuelto! Y lo primero que quiero enseñar es uno de mis primeros resultados del curso de cerámica para adultos que llevo haciendo ya unos meses en Impington Village College.

Sinceramente, no me gusta cómo ha quedado el esmalte. De hecho, mi idea inicial era dejarlo mayormente blanco y después pintar sobre él pequeños detalles de color. Visto lo visto, creo que lo dejaré como está, no sea que lo termine de fastidiar.

En fin, así es la cerámica para principiantes: sorprendente y decepcionante a partes iguales.

After a non-stop summer - visits, BBQs, Honeymoons in Iceland... - I'm back! And the first thing I wanna show is one of the first results of the pottery course for adults I've been attending for some months now at Impington Village College.

To be honest, I don't like how the glaze turned out. In fact, my initial idea was to leave it mostly white and then add some small colour details with enamel paint or something similar. However, given what I've got, I guess I'll leave it as it is just in case I spoil it any further.

Anyway, this is the way pottery is for beginners: both surprising and disappointing in equal parts.

¡Ey! ¡Sigo viva! La razón de mi desaparición ha sido un encargo sobre el que publicaré alguna cosa pronto. Así que, para desquitarme de tanto ordenador, necesitaba una sesión de algo más manual, por lo que me he dedicado a aprender a hacer libretas para después ilustrar sus portadas con gouache. ¿Qué os parecen?

Hey! I'm still alive! The reason for my disappearance has been a commission of which I'll post something pretty soon. So, in order to give my mind and eyes a rest after so much time working at the computer, I invested a day in learning how to bind little notebooks and then, of course, illustrated their covers using gouache. What do you think?

No sé a vosotros, pero a mí me encanta tener las especias en botecitos de cristal bonitos, todos iguales (llamadme pija). Sin embargo, no ha sido hasta que nos mudamos a Cambridge que he podido empezar mi "colección". Sé que hay muchos imprimibles gratis para etiquetarlos, pero quise hacer mis propias pegatinas y, ya que estaba, ¿por qué no iba a traducirlas y compartirlas con tod@s vosotr@s?

I don't know about you, but I personally love having all my spices in identical little cute glass jars (call me preppy). However, it wasn't until we moved to Cambridge that I have been able to start my "collection". I know there are plenty of free printable labels out there, but I wanted to make my own stickers and, while I was at it, why wouldn't I translate and share them with all of you?

El pasado 4 de enero vio la luz el primer número del nuevo fanzine Tiro en el festival de autoedición Tenderete, en Valencia. He tenido el placer de colaborar en este primer número junto con un montón de artistazos, así que, dejadme que os explique de qué va Tiro (según su blog):

¿Qué?: "TIRO" es, por intentar definir lo indefinible, un disparo visual, un golpe al cerebro que te agita y te inquieta. Un nuevo proyecto en el que un grupo de jóvenes creadores se reúnen para ofrecer al mundo nuevas y diferentes visiones del mundo que les rodea y del mundo que les gobierna en su interior.

¿Quién?: "TIRO" está compuesto por un grupo base de seis personas, a las que apoyan un nutrido grupo de artistas que han prestado de manera desinteresada su ayuda para poder sacar adelante este joven proyecto. Poco a poco iremos desvelando sus nombres, aunque sí que podemos adelantar que el autor de la portada es el gran Miguel Ángel Giner Bou, hacedor junto a Cristina Durán, de dos de los tebeos patrios más alabados de los últimos años: "Una Posibilidad Entre Mil" y "La Máquina de Efrén". Nunca podremos estar lo suficientemente agradecidos a Miguel Ángel por su ayuda y esperanza en nosotros para llevar a buen puerto un trabajo de este calibre.

¿Cómo?: ¿Que cómo es "TIRO"? Oh. Creo que tendrás que verlo por ti mismo. Eso sí, te adelanto que pocas veces habrás visto algo igual.

Last 4th of January, the new fanzine Tiro came to life during the self-publishing festival Tenderete, in Valencia. I had the pleasure of collaborating in the first issue together with a bunch of great artists, so let me tell you what Tiro is all about (according to their blog):

What?: "TIRO" is, in an attempt to describe the indescribable, a visual gunshot, a brain blow that shakes you. A new project where a bunch of young creators get together to showcase new and different points of view of their surroundings and individual inner worlds.

Who?: "TIRO" is made up of six base members supported by a nourished group of artists who have collaborated disinterestedly in order to bring this young project to light. We will gradually reveal their names, however, we can say that the responsible for the cover is the great Miguel Ángel Giner Bou, co-author together with Cristina Durán, of two of the most acclaimed Spanish comic books: "Una Posibilidad Entre Mil" and "La Máquina de Efrén". We couldn't be more grateful to Miguel Ángel for his help and trust in us to carry out such a big project.

How?: What does "TIRO" look like, you say? Oh. I think you'll have to see it for yourself. But one thing's for sure: You have never seen anything like it before.

Las ilustraciones de esta bolsa de tela también han sido impresas sobre papel de transfer, además de recortadas y planchadas a mano. Sí, tanto Zumba está haciendo estragos en mi cerebro.

The illustrations on this tote bag have also been printed on transfer paper, hand cut and hand ironed. Yes, so much Zumba is wreaking havoc in my brain.

Hacía días que tenía ganas de seguir planchando ilustraciones en bolsas de tela y los 0ºC de esta mañana de sábado me han gritado desde fuera que hoy era el día perfecto. Así que por fin he podido terminar la mochilita de tela que tenía pendiente.

It's been days since I felt like ironing more illustrations on fabric bags and this Saturday morning's 0ºC told me today was the perfect day to do so. So, I finally could finish the pending canvas string bag.
