Joel Edgerton Joins Depp In Black Mass

Big day on the Croisette for Joel Edgerton. The Australian actor just took the bows for the Cannes opening night film The Great Gatsby, and he just closed a deal to star alongside Johnny Depp in the Cross Creek crime thriller Black Mass, which Barry Levinson is directing. The picture is a co-production between Cross Creek and Nigel Sinclair and Guy East’s Exclusive Media, with the two entities co-financing and Universal Pictures releasing in the U.S. through Cross Creek’s distribution deal with the studio.

Whitey Bulger rose to the top of the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List when he disappeared for a decade before he could be put behind bars. Many felt he could never have gotten that far without the help of John Connolly, an FBI agent and childhood pal of Bulger and his brother. Connolly was tasked with bringing down the Italian mob, and he was aided by Bulger, who burnished his own position as Boston crime kingpin by getting rid of the competition for his Winter Hill gang. Edgerton will play Connolly, who was lauded for his work before things went south for him. He was eventually convicted of racketeering and obstruction of justice for aiding Bulger, who is currently in a Massachusetts state prison for second-degree murder. Edgerton gets a meaty role in a story about a law enforcement officer with conflicted loyalties.

The film’s title comes from the 2001 Dick Lehr/Gerald O’Neill New York Times bestseller Black Mass: The True Story Of An Unholy Alliance Between The FBI And The Irish Mob. The script was written by Mark Mallouk, and the long-gestating movie got the third act it needed when Bulger was captured in California in summer 2011, after he spent a decade on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted list.

Bulger was a notoriously ruthless Boston mob kingpin who was the basis for characters like the one that Jack Nicholson played in the Martin Scorsese-directed The Departed and Pete Postlethwaite played in the Ben Affleck-directed The Town (Affleck has his own Whitey Bulger project scripted by Boardwalk Empire creator Terrence Winter with Matt Damon expected to play the mobster, but he’ll next direct Dennis Lehane’s Live By Night so there’s no way that film will beat this one into production). Even as he was masterminding a violent gang–the federal case against him alleges 19 murders–Bulger was an FBI informant, a role he took on discreetly to take down a rival gang, but the tables were turned on him. After the Feds closed in on their targets, they double crossed Bulger and ultimately prosecuted him, along with his partner in crime and the original FBI agent working with him.

The film will be produced by Cross Creek’s Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson, John Lesher, and Christi Dembrowski, Depp’s partner in Infinitum Nihil. Exclusive Media’s Tobin Armbrust, President Worldwide Production and Acquisitions and Cross Creek Pictures Sr. VP of Production Adam Kassan, will oversee production. Alex Walton, Exclusive Media’s President of International Sales and Distribution, will introduce Black Mass to overseas buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin.

Samuel L. Jackson To Join Barely Lethal

After spending the last couple of years overseeing a handful of superheroes, Samuel L. Jackson should have no trouble handling a teenage assassin.

Samuel L. Jackson is in final negotiations to co-star with Hailee Steinfeld in the indie “Barely Lethal” that Brett Ratner is producing.

Kyle Newman is helming with John D’Arco penning the script. John Cheng will join Ratner as a producer through their Rat Entertainment banner along with Ted Hartley and Vanessa Coifman for RKO Pictures and Hopscotch Pictures’ Sukee Chew.

Story follows a 16-year-old international assassin yearning for a “normal” adolescence who fakes her own death and enrolls as a senior in a suburban high school. Jackson will play her mentor who trains her in the program.

The last time Jackson tangled with assassins was when he teamed with Geena Davis in the 1996 action pic “The Long Kiss Goodnight.”

Always one of the busiest actors in town, Jackson lends his voice later this summer to the DreamWorks Animation pic “Turbo” and can also be seen in MGM’s reboot of “Robocop.”

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Review

As a diehard Star Trek fan, I've seen Science Fiction evolve over the years, with the very good Star Trek: The Original Series leading the way in my early youth. To me, the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and Bones were the epitome of human drama in space, with The Enterprise hosting this trio of bold brave men exploring the universe. Their interactions and debates were as enjoyable as every Vulcan Nerve Pinch by Spock and high-flying drop kick that Kirk ever made. To Kirk, the Enterprise was a living thing, with as much emotion as its chief engineer Montgomery Scott. Spock and Bones were living representations of his morals and values, and their friendship bound the three together as this soap opera set amongst the backdrop of deep space paved the way for Star Wars, and later a successul string of Trek movies and television series. But, Trek was never so good after TOS, with the could-have-been (The Next Generation), the blah (Deep Space Nine and Voyager), and the disastrous (Enterprise). But as of late, there's been a glimmer of hope: 2009's Star Trek successfully rebooted the franchise into an alternate reality, even though its plot had holes as big as a temporal displacement. With the release this week of the nearly perfect Star Trek: Into Darkness, old fans like me can finally rejoice that the franchise is triumphantly back.

Set several months after their encounter with the futuristic Romulan Nero, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine, Rise of the Guardians) and crew attempt to save a pre-industrious civilization from the imminent destruction of a massive volcano. When his first officer Spock (Zachary Quinto, Heroes) is placed in mortal danger, Kirk ignores The Prime Directive to rescue his Vulcan friend, exposing their massive starship to an unsuspecting people who soon begin to worship it. Although he's saved the people of Nibiru, Kirk has angered Starfleet Command, including Admiral Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood, Young Justice), who is forced to demote Kirk. Meanwhile, a mysterious explosion destroys a London archival building, courtesy of the terrorist John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock). He's a former Starfleet officer whose incredible strength, intelligence, and dark intentions make him public enemy #1. After a second attack leaves most of Starfleet's commanders dead, Kirk is reinstated to hunt Harrison down, only to learn later that the terrorist's name is just a cover, and that he is instead a very popular character from the Star Trek universe. As news of 'Harrison's' capture reaches Starfleet, another starship arrives to attack the Enterprise, sending its crew on a high-speed chase back to Earth. With 'Harrison' promising to help, Kirk launches a last desperate mission to defeat the Starfleet traitors and Harrison, whatever the cost.

Based on the alternate timeline universe created by Director JJ Abrams (Mission Impossible III), Darkness is at once a rip-roaring action-packed adventure, but also excels as a smart and character-driven story about friendships, family, and the steps we're willing to take to protect them. In so many ways, we see those TOS friendships ignite once more, with spirited debates, wise-cracking jokes, and a genuine feeling of camaraderie that feels like an old shoe. Quinto, Urban, and Pine fit seamlessly together on screen, strenghtening these classic characters by turning the tables on our expectations and delivering a higher level of drama that hasn't been seen since Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. But, it's also the emergence of Cumberbatch who steals so many scenes, proving that he's ready for a big moment in the sun. His brilliance and darkness is encompassing, as he attempts to manipulate Kirk and crew before finally turning on them. Frnakly we haven't seen a bad guy of this sort in the franchise since Khan, and Cumberbatch fits nicely into that role. Credit this deep character development to Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Transformers series), who continue to hone their craft while complementing Abrams' incredible eye for sprawling and impactful space scenes. If Abrams can do this to Star Trek, what reimaginings will he bring to Star Wars?

Composer Michael Giacchino (Up) crafts a soundtrack filled both with fast-paced war pieces as well as tender ballads, especially near film's end. And yes, the familiar TOS theme by Alexander Courage comes out to play just enough to remind us veterans of the series' pedigree. Abrams is also a master at casting, and his additions of Carol Marcus (Alice Eve, The Raven) and former Enterprise baddie Peter Weller (Robocop) are perfectly suited. This all adds up to a film that feels remarkably quick (even though it's 130 minutes long), but only because it's so well made, locking us in from the start and refusing to let go until either 'Harrison' is finished with us or Kirk rules the day. I couldn't say that about 2009's Star Trek, but I can emphatically call this mission a total success.

Star Trek: Into Darkness is one of the best Summer films of 2013, and could see a long run through the season. With its perfect casting, immersive story, and top-notch directing, audiences will be hard-pressed to make a case against seeing it. At last, we have the Trek we need and deserve. It's rated PG-13 and is playing in IMAX and 3D everywhere.

CULVER CITY, Calif., May 15, 2013 – Sony Pictures Entertainment has won the exclusive worldwide distribution rights to the eagerly anticipated Angry Birds animated film, making it one of the most high-profile deals of the year. The 3D film is being developed, produced, and financed by Rovio Entertainment and will be released worldwide by Sony Pictures on July 1, 2016. Several major studios pursued the global film rights in recent weeks, with Sony Pictures Entertainment emerging as the winner.

Michael Lynton, Chairman & CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Amy Pascal, Co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment jointly announced their partnership today. John Cohen and David Maisel – producer of Despicable Me and executive producer of Iron Man, respectively – are both on board for the new Angry Birds feature film. Cohen will serve as producer and Maisel is executive producer.

The World War Z game is available on iOS and select Android devices on May 30. World War Z, the film, revolves around ex-United Nations employee Gerry lane (Brad Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop a pandemic that is toppling armies and governments, and threatening to decimate humanity itself. The film hits theaters worldwide on June 21.

A Haunted House Blu-ray Review

The Wayans Brothers's A Haunted House Blu-ray release is one of the worst of the year, sporting a below-average video transfer, an average DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track, and a single supplement that shouldn't have been a candidate in the first place. But it's the completely unoriginal film that suffers here, reducing the experience to nothing more than mind-numbing fare and making this release a definite skip.

A parody of the found-footage horror films, A Haunted House is neither funny nor redeeming as even a rental. I won't belabor the point much longer, but disappointments from 2012 such as Battleship, Cloud Atlas, and John Carter look like amazing cinematic efforts as compared to A Haunted House. At least those films attempted to pair stories with good actors before being shunned by the general public. It's becoming a sad commentary to skip anything by the once great Wayans Brothers, as their kind of shtick would have seemed funny in 1990 when In Living Color premiered.

Your best bet is to stay far away from this poorly contrived and executed train wreck of a comedy - in fact, I will be burning my copy before the Internet ink is dried on this one. Thanks Wayans Brothers for seizing 86 minutes of my life that I won't get back.

Here's why Cheech & Chong were funny 30 years ago, but not today.

In every way possible, Cheech & Chong's Animated Movie feels more like a rehash of old shtick than a solidified comeback. In fact, that's all it really is, matched up with some simply-drawn cartoon characters who talk about getting stoned at a drive-in movie theater. That already dates the material to those of us who can remember when three channels ruled the airwaves. I've never heard of an act using their old recordings to freshen up their classic material, but we see it here, and it doesn't seem to work..

And while it looks pretty good - thanks to a clean 1080p MPEG/AVC transfer - and sounds ok courtesy of a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track, there's just nothing that's funny about it. Had we seen this 30 years ago, before Jay and Silent Bob owned that piece of stoner territory, we might have laughed a lot longer. The three audio commentaries will be insightful for longtime fans, but the new and curious would better off simply purchasing a couple of their albums and enjoying the ride. That is, if you cared at all about Cheech & Chong when they were actually good - otherwise, I would skip this release entirely.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Review

With the 12th entry in the always popular Star Trek franchise, J.J. Abrams delivers the continuation of his 2009 reboot of the original crew. All of the marque characters return from the previous film, with two notable additions: Dr. Carol Marcus, a familiar name to fans of the original films, played by Alice Eve, and the menacing villain, John Harrison, played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Also returning is the notorious lens flare from the first film. This stylized visual does add a unique look while in space, though I found it a little distracting watching the film in 3D. There is one scene in which Alice Eve is delivering a very emotional bit of dialog, but I felt her performance was overshadowed by the lens flare streaking across her face for most of it.

The film starts off with the crew of the Enterprise on a remote planet trying to save a thriving young species from extinction by stopping a massive volcano from erupting. When the crew returns home, they learn of an attack on a Federation facility in London. The terrorist behind the attack is John Harrison, one of the Federation’s best and brightest minds. After a second attack that leaves someone close to Kirk dead, he seeks to track down Harrison and bring him to justice.

Kirk tracks Harrison to the one place no one wants to go; Qo'noS, the Klingon home world. Fearing the start of an all out war between the Federation and the Klingon empire, Kirk and company must devise a plan to not provoke the natives but also capture or eliminate Harrison. Using a commandeered vessel from a group of smugglers, the crew of the Enterprise flies to the abandoned area where they believe Harrison to be. After being discovered by a Klingon patrol, a fantastic action sequence begins.

When the smoke clears, Kirk takes Harrison into custody and returns back to the Enterprise. It is then revealed that the Federation has ulterior motives for wanting Harrison dead.

Wonderful performances are turned in by the cast, but it is Cumberbatch's merciless demeanor and ruthless delivery that steals the show as Harrison. Writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof explore a new depth of emotion for Spock and Zachary Quinto plays it flawlessly.

With awesome visuals, superb action, and wonderful performances, Star Trek: Into Darkness is a great addition to an already remarkable franchise. Star Trek: Into Darkness will be released Friday May 17, 2013 in 3D and IMAX 3D.

The entire cast of the animated smash RIO returns in RIO 2, and they are joined by a new flock of top actors and musical talents. Rich with grandeur, character, color and music, RIO 2 finds Jewel (Anne Hathaway), Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) and their three kids leaving their domesticated life in that magical city for a journey to the Amazon. They encounter a menagerie of characters who are born to be wild, voiced by Oscar nominee Andy Garcia, Oscar/Emmy/Tony-winner Rita Moreno, Grammy winner Bruno Mars, and Tony winner Kristin Chenoweth.

New Divergent Image. Tris Don't Jump

Afraid of heights? Let’s just say you probably wouldn’t make it in Dauntless.

The highly anticipated adaptation of Veronica Roth’s best-selling Divergent is still filming in Chicago, but EW has gotten this exclusive first look of Tris (Shailene Woodley) out on a ledge and perched to jump as part of initiation into her faction. For those of who haven’t read the books, in the dystopian world of Divergent, all of society is divided into five factions: Abnegation (selfless); Erudite (intelligent); Candor (honest); Amity (peaceful) and Dauntless (brave). Our heroine, sixteen-year-old Tris Prior, has chosen the Dauntless faction which involves a lot of very scary initiation tests—like the time she stood still while knives were thrown at her head.

“In this photo she’s already jumped off the train and onto a seven story building as part of the initiation rite for the Dauntless,” explains director Neil Burger. “The next thing they have to do is jump from the building and down through a courtyard that has a deep, black hole. It’s terrifying.”

And filming this scene sounds almost as frightening. “We’d been nervously planning it because it is dangerous and there’s a lot of people on that roof,” says Burger, who used the former Spiegel building for this location. “We had to pull it off safely and also pull it off cinematically, so you have this knot in your stomach as you watch this young woman decide to do this crazy thing. We had great weather that day and I think this scene really is emblematic of the movie: It shows the energy and the rawness of the way we’re telling the story,” he says.

The cast of actors—which include Theo James, Miles Teller, Ben Lamb and Zoe Kravitz—all have to do all sorts of stomach-lurching things, such as jumping off of elevated trains and scaling great heights. Their director says they’re a group ready for any challenge, especially his leading lady. “Shailene says she’s not afraid of heights but that she’s afraid of falling,” says Burger, with a laugh. “This makes perfect sense to me. But she really did stand on that ledge—this is a real photo. She’s incredibly game and so adventurous,” he says. “In a way, she’s very Dauntless.”
