Last April, rumours began to spread that 20th Century Fox had its eye on an ambitious new take on the Zorro legend, with post-apocalyptic version Zorro Reborn bubbling away in development. Now it’s closer to reality, with Gael Garcia Bernal anointed to take over the trademark sword-swishing duties.

Since it’s set in The World Of Tomorrow, it’ll be a change from the usual Californian / Mexican setting, though the ruined world concept does suggest a lot of desert will still be involved. Bernal’s Zorro will this time be a masked vigilante out for revenge.

Against who? That is still shrouded – or perhaps that should be cloaked, given the character – in mystery. What we do know is that Glenn Gers has taken a pass at the script originally written by Harker scribes Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy.

But though pre-vis specialist and spellcheck nemesis Rpin Suwannath was originally touted as the new film’s director, the chair is currently vacant.

Zorro has been a success for Sony in the past with 1998’s The Mask Of Zorro and to a lesser degree with 2005’s The Legend Of Zorro. And the studio isn’t giving up on the character either – it is still developing an origin story for the hero based on Isabel Allende’s 2005 book, simply titled Zorro.

Katie Cassidy Cast In CW's Green Arrow

Gossip Girl, Melrose Place and Supernatural alumna Katie Cassidy is back at the CW as the female lead in the network’s pilot Arrow. The Warner Bros TV-produced project, a modern retelling of the story of DC Comics character Green Arrow, stars Stephen Amell as the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City.

Cassidy will play Laurel, a young legal clinic attorney who shares a romantic past with Oliver. (In the comics, the character, Dinah “Laurel” Lance, has a superhero alter ego, Black Canary.) In Arrow, Cassidy joins Amell and Susanna Thompson, who was cast yesterday as Oliver’s mother, Moira Queen. David Nutter is directing the pilot, written/executive produced by Andrew Kreisberg, Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim.

I love this movie! Fantastical, flawless, fun family film, wow, that’s a lot of Fs, but seriously it’s great to have Studio Ghibli back with their latest adaptation, since I wasn’t completely taken by Ponyo.
I think the American voice cast were great, I’m curious to know what may or may not have gotten lost in the translation and the adaptation though, since I’ve never read the children book series that it’s based on. The animation is all that you’d expect from Ghibli, I appreciate how they stay true to their style, they don’t need to go 3D CG just to blow us away. Traditional animation with a compelling story and heartwarming themes, that’s what THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY promises and delivers..

Residing quietly beneath the floorboards are little people who live undetected in a secret world to be discovered, where
the smallest may stand tallest of all. From the legendary Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo) comes “The Secret
World of Arrietty,” an animated adventure based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.”

The story, in a nutshell, is about Arrietty (voice of Bridgit Mendler), who’s part of this whole kind, if you will, called Borrowers, they’re tiny people living under your house and their job is to borrow the things they need to survive. Arrietty is about 14 years old and she lives with her dad (voice of Will Arnett) and her mom (voice of Amy Poehler).

You’ll be amused by Arnett’s constant grunts and sighs, that’s practically all he does, a man of few words, he has seen it all, and he’s exhausted but he would go distance for his wife and daughter. Poehler’s voice as the mom offers some of the funniest scenes in the film because Poehler understands that exaggerations are common in Japanese animation, by that I mean, when a character panics, he or she truly panics, their eyes get big, their mouth turns ridiculously small or got even unbelievably bigger than their eyes, the hair would stand up, Poehler would quickly shout or yell whenever she senses threat. Moms in general worry a lot, we all know that but this is worry to the nth degree, and she just looks comical doing it, she’s funny but she doesn’t know she’s funny, that’s what’s enjoyable about the mom.

Arrietty is curious which also makes her daring but cautious, she doesn’t quickly put her trust in a 12 year old human named Shawn (voice of David Henrie) but she doesn’t quickly dismiss him either.
The story has an antagonist, otherwise it wouldn’t be exciting. Shawn sees the tiny people as friends, but the nanny who wants to prove their existence once and for all, see them as pests

The film is about the friendship of Arrietty with Shawn, the film sorta takes us back to such tales as Gulliver’s Travels or Honey I Shrunk The Kids, but THE SECRET LIFE OF ARRIETTY mostly focuses on building that trust between Arrietty and Shawn.

Arrietty has been taught all her life that once you’re spotted by humans, you need to move on to other locations, Shawn is ill and he doesn’t know if he’d get better, feeling lonely and abandoned, he’s willing to open himself to any connection, anything that would take his mind away from his condition, he’s open to any potential new friend, be it human or tiny people.

I think families would love the fact that the film is irresistibly adorable, kids would giggle at the cat, they’d be amazed at the sight of something like ants or bugs being significantly and literally larger than themselves.
Both Arrietty and Shawn come to an acceptance, the movie doesn’t lead you to a life where they’d co-exist and live happily ever after, it’s more about life goes and that we are much stronger than we often give ourselves credit for.

Twisted Metal Film In The Works

Sony Pictures has made a preemptive 7-figure deal for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance co-director Brian Taylor to write and direct a live action adaptation of the iconic video game Twisted Metal. Ghost Rider’s Avi and Ari Arad are producing the adaptation of the game, which has been published in various configurations by Sony Computer and is one of the biggest selling video games. The newest version of the game was just released today for PlayStation 3. Avi Arad, of course, has been a producer of Sony’s Spider-Man films since the beginning, including the upcoming 3D The Amazing Spider-Man. All this action occurs as Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance opens this weekend, with Nicolas Cage reprising the title role and Idris Elba also starring.

Like the game, the film will revolve around an underground event that pits a number of combatants in a fight to the death. They are outfitted in armored weaponized cars that are pimped out with heavy weaponry that includes missiles and machine guns. Some drop mines or launch electrical charges. The proprietor of the race is Calypso, a string-puller dedicating to examining the human condition, such as what makes a peaceful man violent, what terrifies a violent man and who will make a Faustian bargain in which they risk their lives. The sole survivor will get any wish granted.

I’m told that the film will include such signature contestant characters as Sweet Tooth, a homicidal clown who drives an ice cream truck, and Doll Face, a young woman who is trapped behind a porcelain mask and who drives an 18-wheeler.

This is the first project that Taylor has done solo. He has always teamed with Mark Neveldine on such films as the Crank series. There have been two so far, and they are talking about making a third, in 3D, as well as a possible future Ghost Rider.

Gina Carano Is "In The Blood"

Gina Carano is continuing to roundhouse-kick her way into the movie business.

After making her breakthrough with the action vehicle Haywire, the MMA fighter-turned-actress is coming on board to star in In the Blood, an action thriller being directed by John Stockwell (Into the Blue, Blue Crush).

Movie Package Co.’s Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield (The Messenger) are producing the movie.

Described as being in the vein of Taken, Blood is set in motion when a husband disappears while vacationing in the Caribbean with his wife, to be played by Carano. The grieving wife passionately and recklessly pursues the men whom she believes kidnapped and killed him. Bennett Yellin and James Robert Johnston wrote the script.

“This role will showcase not only Gina’s fighting skills, but also her acting abilities as her character struggles to reign in her violent past,”

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late spring or early summer in Puerto Rico with production partners Pimienta Film Company (The Men Who Stare At Goats).

Carano rose to fame as an international star in the field of mixed martial arts, becoming the sport's female face. Steven Soderbergh was so impressed with her blend of looks and athletic prowess that he plucked her from the sport and built Haywire around her. She held her own with actors such as Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Michael Douglas in the film, which was released in January by Relativity, and an acting career was born.

Fast 6 To Drive Into Theaters In May 2013

Following the glorious tosh that was Fast 5 , talk was of the next two instalments shooting back-to-back. Sadly, Dwayne Johnson has just told MTV that he doesn't think that's still the plan. But it doesn't matter: Fast 6 will still go before the cameras in May.

"We were going to try shooting them together," confirms his Rockness. "It would make sense while we have the same crew and everybody in one place. But I think we're dealing with some weather issues, so from what I know we're going to shoot Fast 6 first, and then worry about Fast 7 a little later."

Weather issues? That would be the fault of our unpredictable European climate. "We're going to be in the UK and we're going to be in Germany," Dwayne believes, although he doesn't say if both those locations or part of 6, or whether it's one each for 6 and 7.

What this does make clear is that Johnson is in for the long haul as US marshal and the planet's best hunter Luke Hobbs: the dogged Javert on the trail of Vin Diesel's Jean Valjean. Or something. Rejoice!

Next Transformers Movie Coming In 2014

Does the world really need another Transformers film, looks like director Micheal Bay thinks so.

Given the performance of the franchise so far, it was inevitable that we were going to get more Transformers films. What was more up in the air was the possibility that Michael Bay would be the man to direct them. Well, now you need wonder no more (and start despairing if you hated the other movies): he’ll be back.

Chatting with MTV, loose-lipped producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura let slip word that Paramount has locked in Bay to direct at least one more film, which will arrive in the summer of 2014. We say loose-lipped, because he apparently wasn’t supposed to reveal the details just yet, with Paramount planning a press release for today or later in the week. But the feline has well and truly left the bag, so here we are.

And there are more intriguing details as to what we might expect from a new movie. “I think we really are going to do a reboot there,” Di Bonaventura says. “But what that’s going to be, we don’t even know yet… We’ve got to get a story first.”

Apparently the main cast aren’t signed yet (and Shia LaBeouf has indicated that he’s done with the franchise anyway). So we’ll likely see some familiar robo faces in a new plotline. “It’s a hybrid because there’s still continuity going on, and there will be a lot of new cast,” he said. “Whether there’s anybody from the first cast, we don’t even know yet. But it’s going to be a whole new story.” And as of right now, it will simply be one film to kick off a new run, not the back-to-back experience as hinted at by Hasbro months ago.

Bay will first get to make Pain And Gain (which has Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg attached) starting this April and then he’ll gear up another outing for Optimus and the rest.

Fuller’s Hannibal Get's A Full Plate

We were always bullish on this one. Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal project just got a direct-to-series order. NBC has picked up 13 episodes of the thriller TV series based on Thomas Harris’ classic cannibal serial killer.

Logline: “One-hour contemporary thriller series featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon – FBI agent Will Graham and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship.”

So that includes some new information. Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Heroes) is focusing on damaged FBI profiler Graham instead of Clarice Starling (popularized by Jodie Foster in Silence of the Lambs). Graham is the agent who captured Lecter when the psychiatrist was on his killing/eating spree.

The first question is who will play Lecter — a part that one could argue is either a dream role, or a thankless gig considering the inevitable comparisons to Anthony Hopkins’ Oscar-winning take on the character.

Another question: How much will NBC push the envelope with the original tale’s gory content?

Skipping the traditional pilot stage for a direct-to-series production can save money, especially if a show’s costs are being shared by a committed foreign distributor. But it’s also a risky move. The time-honored pilot testing process gives networks and producers a chance to heavily rework a show’s first episode (or dump the project all together) before it airs. NBC previously gave a direct-to-series order for The Firm, which flopped out of the gate on Thursday nights.

Fuller’s other buzzed-about NBC project, a modernized dramatic reboot of The Munsters, was recently pushed back.

What did RAMA think of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE Blu-Ray? Make sure to follow him on Facebook and Twitter.

The competition during Oscar season in 1999 was tough because Saving Private Ryan was excellent and so was The Thin Red Line, but SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE came out the winner, deservingly so. I think it’s because the film was not just about celebration of love, but it’s also celebration of literature, performance and theater and the genius behind some of the great plays in history, so timeless that those works remain a source of inspiration for many playwrights and filmmakers today. In a bonus segment of this blu-ray, you’d find one of the filmmakers said a statement that I fully agree with, that statement was.. if William Shakespeare were alive today, he’d have a five-picture deal with Warner Bros. and drive a Porsche. Hollywood rewards storytellers of such caliber, talents whose words could move you like no other.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is not just another period piece with lavish ancient costumes, what director John Madden and Oscar screenwriting team Marc Norman, Tom Stoppard accomplished was craft something that today’s generation hasn’t deem cool for quite sometime, seem cool and relevant again. I remember when this movie came out, some argued the necessity of its existence seeing that people already were required to read Shakespeare in school, why the bloody hell must you see encounter Shakespeare in theaters too?! But what they forgot was that theaters are exactly where Shakespeare’s works belong.

Out of ideas and cash, a young Will Shakespeare (Fiennes), is in search of a muse to break his creative drought. After meeting the lovely Lady Viola (Paltrow), the two find themselves entangled in a secret romance that rejuvenates Will’s creativity. His pen flows like never before until he uncovers two unexpected truths about his new lover – she’s promised to marry someone else and she’s successfully impersonating a man to play the lead in Will’s latest play.

Joseph Fiennes took on the title role and he knocked it out of the park, fiery, fierce, passionate, so much so that when love was denied, his heart broke into a thousand pieces and his expression didn’t lie. Gwyneth Paltrow deserved her Oscar win, she practically played dual character, and never have I seen a woman so taken and so smitten by love, Paltrow represented the culmination, the collective gathering of all who believe in the possibility, the moment she was in that reality, everything else seemed to disappear.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE had an outstanding cast ensemble that includes Tom Wilkinson, Geoffrey Rush, Colin Firth, and Judi Dench, these are thesps that demand your respect. Ben Affleck probably the odd one of the bunch but even he pulled his weight.
There are many reasons to love this film, but my top reason would be that it goes to show that even the proud would find themselves in awe, at the feet of a masterpiece. Wilkinson’s character is a gangster but he was actually a closet theater freak, he couldn’t resist the first opportunity he’d get to be part of that world, Colin Firth played a stuck up spoiled rich aristocrat but he ended admitting to the play’s power over the woman he wished to marry, and the same case with Dench as Queen Elizabeth, wise and firm. You could act tough all you want but sooner or later you too would find yourself not able to escape a great work when you behold one.

SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is a romantic comedy, it’s very romantic and it’s very funny, the comedic timing of all its performers were spot on, the dialogue made sense, they’re powerful and lighthearted at the same time. The production design, the costume, and the makeup and the cinematography move together harmoniously, complimenting every other element, elevating the film and placing it on its worthy pedestal. Everything about it was grand and majestic.
The blu-ray comes with audio commentaries and a lengthy featurette that takes you back to behind-the-scenes and the award spectacle, if there’s one movie you need to watch at home this Valentine’s day, let it be SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE bl-ray, where art thou?!

Mere weeks after his long running NBC show CHUCK wrapped, the actor has nabbed a starring role in Fox's Let It Go.

The half-hour single camera comedy project, which hails from Sony Pictures TV, centers on a married couple: the husband (Levi), his best friend and her sister as they try to navigate, negotiate and sometimes manipulate society’s unspoken rules.

The script is being penned by DJ Nash, with Rescue Me's Peter Tolan and Michael Wimer serving as executive producers.

He joins stars including James Purefoy, Kevin Bacon and Becki Newton with projects in contention at Fox.

Emma Watson In Talks To Star In Beauty And The Beast

Warner Bros. has tapped "Bridget Jones's Diary" scribe Andrew Davies to write "Beauty and the Beast," a new take on the classic tale that Guillermo del Toro will not only produce, but also direct.

WB's "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson is in final negotiations to topline the period pic.

DiNovi Pictures' Denise Di Novi and Alison Greenspan will produce with del Toro, who will write a treatment that Davies will then work off of.

Del Toro, who's currently filming "Pacific Rim" for WB and Legendary Pictures, is credited as a co-writer on both of WB's upcoming "Hobbit" movies. He recently exec produced Universal's "Mama" and DreamWorks Animation's "Rise of the Guardians."

Having wrapped her long-running role as Hermione Granger in the "Harry Potter" pics, Watson will next reteam with "Deathly Hallows" director David Yates. She currently co-stars in "My Week With Marilyn" and will soon be seen in Summit's "The Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Davies, who wrote "Bridget Jones's Diary" and its 2004 sequel, most recently penned "The Three Musketeers" and "Brideshead Revisited."
